Three Stars as ....some good, some not. The good....bakery has consistently friendly, helpful staff and their organic breads are particularly good. Other excellent staff who are always helpful and pleasant include cashiers: Presley, Ha, Cheyanne, Nadine and Brenda (with light blonde hair).All are super nice and real assets to the overall impression of the store. Ryan in the deli and other deli workers, also helpful and friendly. The negatives....some of the customer service staff and cashiers are real "OLD BAGS" ! Crabby, argumentative....giving anything but a good impression of the store overall. For example, today (October 11 around 2 pm) at the customer service desk a VERY rude woman (dark blonde hair, glasses, covered in arm tattoos, very thin and scrawny.....gave me a real " going over" as I made the " mistake" of choosing her to ask about some missing air miles . I was so shocked by her attitude that I told her to "stop snapping at me". Her workmate (heavy set with dark hair) then proceeded to have quite a chuckle about the whole confrontation. I was not impressed. I had heard from other people about some of the crabby, older women working there, usually with no name tags on, these two at the service desk today certainly fit that category! There is also a very rude guy in the fish department named Derrick. Again,I was told about him by another customer. He is a real jackass! Rude and crude. The other negative,... prices overall are too high, compared to other local grocery stores. But they do have better organic produce and bakery items, so that has kept us coming back for smaller shopping trips. But after today's fiasco at their service desk, we won't be back as often. A few " bad apples" really can spoil the overall impression of a store, faster than anything.????

Clean store, smaller but has most things. Not as cheap as other chains of grocery stores. Does give a 3 cents off for bringing your own bag. Decent bulk section. They were entirely out of garlic bread which is why only 4 stars.

I like the variety of products in the natural health section. The bakery is good. This grocery store can be a bit pricey. Good place for prepared single serve meals. Accepts Air Miles and has online ordering with grocery delivery service. Pharmacy is expansive and accepts most direct bill extended health insurance plans. Great organic foods section.

Everything sold here is of good quality and if you are not happy with a product, in my experience, they will refund or replace that item as long as you have your receipt. This is a modern store. Starbucks is inside and you can also buy store brand sandwiches, smoothies and sit and eat in the store.

While the name is deceptive as the prices are consistently higher than the same item (brand and size) at other stores like Country Grocer Thrifty doesn't skimp on quality. I know I'll get high quality items every time here. Pay more, yes. But some goods aren't worth paying less for lower quality in my opinion. The staff is awesome and customer service is fantastic.

Thrifty food has its ups and downs in prices and keeping up with the ever-growing giant that is Quality Foods and Country Grocers, but they do it well. Clean atmosphere, friendly staff, and fresh foods; I continue to shop there frequently for most things. And when meat is on sale...sometimes its REALLY on sale! Those are good days.

Thrifty's on Cliffe is my grocery store of choice, in spite of there being three other major grocers between us. Clean and bright with some of the very best customer service staff I have ever come across. Friendly and welcoming, the staff are always polite, helpful and understanding should you have a question or a problem. Great selection and fantastic staff are why I bypass the closer shops.

Avoid like the plague. Stopped in on my way to the ferry on Friday to get supplies in for the weekend as we weren't sure how far it might be to a supermarket from our next campsite. Friday was June 23rd. Went to cook the sausages this morning...use by date June 18th. Checked the turkey breasts I bought at the same time, same use by date. They had food on their shelves that could cause serious sickness if not properly handled that was five, yep FIVE days past it's use by date. If I knew how to get in contact with the appropriate authorities I'd do it straight away. AVOID.

I like that I can quickly stop in and grab groceries rarely a line up . If you shop the flyers prices are good, if not they can be a bit high but meat and produce are great quality. Island Farms is the best for dairy by far !

I love this store. Always friendly, especially the cashiers and seafood department. Best seafood department at any grocery store from here to Nanaimo, perhaps beyond. Only place to get many gourmet or specialty items. Amazing deli. I also love their fresh salad bar area where you can make your own gourmet to-go salad sold by weight—incredible selection including all the basics and bonus items like shrimp, arugula, feta, chickpeas, blue cheese, kalamata olives, nuts and seeds and lots of fruit. Would give this location a 5 but I do find its also the most expensive grocery store from here to Nanaimo too, so I shop here for some items and go to Superstore for the bulk of my shopping to save money.

Great Bakery: bought a custom order carrot cake for a 50th birthday and they even put a photo on the cream cheese icing for me, which I emailed in. Cake was delicious and was a hit at the party - my friends were impressed with how it looked and tasted. Staff were all very polite and helpful. It cost less than what I was verbally quoted even though I was prepared to pay that price as it was worth it. I highly recommend this service at Thrifty's!

I love the feel of the cliffe ave Thriftys. It is easy to find exactly what I need and the staff is quite friendly and personable. We recently switched all our prescriptions to the pharmacy, we love it there! They are more accessible and helpful than other pharmacies we have used. To top it off, their COVID policies help make it feel a lot safer there as well!

If you are looking for quality selection in a reasonable sized store this is the place to shop. They have very experienced staff members, and they show it by being kind and helpful. I prefer to shop here more than other local stores. Once you know the store layout you are in and out in a flash. That's how shopping should be.

This review is about the pizza, or so called pizza. One of the worse ever. Tried just a few bites and will be throwing the rest away from a "Half Of A Full" size. This is a surprise since the Port Moody Thrifty's pizza is good, a lot of customers order take out from that one, but this is not even close to the same recipe. As for the rest of the store, it gets a solid "A", so far.

By far one of my favorite major grocery stores to shop at on the island. Staff are friendly and super helpful. Also this location has a wide variety of ethnicity for different food or cooking options. Also in house Starbucks if you are craving a coffee. The sushi is pretty decent.

The staff and security guard are friendly and nice. They make a delicious chicken soup as well as stellar salsa. I like how they offer instead of just a whole chicken(which is also delicious) they have just a breast it makes a yummy lunch snack. I've always been a fan of Thrifty's and this location doesn't disappoint. Same friendly service, great selection of produce, flowers, meats, veg, and specialty products, but unfortunately a bit cramped in this location. Their home delivery is exceptional - deliveries are done by the same person all week who is polite, effective and very helpful. They even mark the frozen bags or meat so you know what to put away first.

Spread out in different parts of the store from produce, to organic! They have a bakery to a butcher, from seafood to kabobs! The only thing I didn't see was a sanitizer station! They even have a pharmacy in store! Plus you can bring your bottle recyclables in store! They carry ice to even something for the home gardener! Noticed the person who was picking up the buggies, sanitizing with the same cloth, that wouldn't help much! You're passing the germs from one cart to the next!

Called at 9am on tuesday morning to have flowers delivered that day. I was told they couldn't be delivered until the next day(Wednesday), even though the automated message says orders placed before 2pm are delivered same day. Ok, that's fine. Flowers didn't arrive until 5pm on Thursday. I worked in a flower shop for years, and that is totally unacceptable. If there was a delivery issue, they should have called to inform me they were not going to be able to fill the order when they said they would. They had my contact info. If I had known the flowers would arrive 2 days later than I wanted, I would have shopped somewhere else. In the past, I've always had great flowers and service from the floral department at Thriftys, but that is the last time I spend my money there.

Ordered Christmas flowers for a friend who had a really bad week. I understand it’s a busy time of year, I also understand needing to make some substitutions. But if you literally can’t fulfill any aspect of the order except a pine cone, you should call to ensure they still want to proceed, particularly when the value is now about 1/2 of what you paid. What I ordered vs. what I got.

Great variety, a bit of everything. You can find brands and items that are not common in other grocery stores. Deli and salad bar are great. Decent sushi-to-go as well. Huge vitamin and supplement selection and health food. Nice variety of natural beauty/bath and personal care products. My only gripe is the prices, Thriftys isn't thrifty. Most food items seem overpriced for what they are.

This location is huge. As they have taken over what once was Safeway, they have used the place effectively. Notably, a very large produce section, a bulk section with incredible options such as bulk olive oils, maple syrup, honey and grind your own peanut butter and a well-to-do meat and fish section. They also have a juice bar, a take-out food section and a Starbucks with a sit down area. Clean, bright and modern.

I was surprised to find poke in the seafood service counter at a very reasonable price. I would like the management to look into education/improvement for the following: 1. The poke was served into a container with gloved hands. This is very weird - this is raw seafood in sauce - why would you use hands to scoop it? (It's like using hands to scoop coleslaw?!?!). Please use a ladle or serving spoon. 2. The staff member also put on new gloves (great) to serve me but then proceeded to use their new gloved hands to open the glass door and then scoop the poke. EEEK! I didn't have the courage to stop them but I really should have. How often is the door handle sanitized? I would have not been bothered if they had used a spoon (see point 1). The store is clean and has a great selection of everything but please fix the above. Thank you!

Thrifty Foods Cliffe Ave Courtenay provided the flowers for our January wedding this year. They worked well from our sample idea pictures, and even worked nicely with pine cones we brought in from home. Their prices were on point, and the flowers were gorgeous. The boutonnieres and corsages had lovely magnets that worked perfectly, so no dresses or suits were harmed.

I rarely shop here as it is out of the way. It's very crowded and the cashiers do not know what customer service is. They do not honor prices they advertise. An item wanted to purchase scanned at full price and not the sale price as advertised on the shelf. Instead of calling a price checker to go look at the advertised price on the shelf, she merely looked in the flyer and told me it wasn't on sale.

I really liked Thrifty Foods when I first moved to Nanaimo from Vancouver in 1998. Overall, it was a great community grocery store. I feel that it's become rather elitist and somehow lacking in joy. Thriftys Flower's however has ALWAYS had awesome customer service and is definitely more welcoming.

They do have a little more vegan options. That's the only reason why I went in here. But the self serve cash out is a joke. Save yourself time and go to a clerk. The self serve takes longer. Once you put something in a bag it doesnt let you scan anything else unless the self serve lady lets you. She is on her own little computer next to all of them. If you just want to get out of there fast dont go through there.

**Edit** Since my last visit, my opinion of Thrifty's has diminished. I bought in on the knife promotion, saved all my stamps diligently and tried to redeem them only to find out they were out of knives and was then notified the knives may never come. Can I expect that this promotion will start up again in the future and more people will be disappointed to find out this is standard practice. The knives got my loyalty but its a fickle beast... First time in. As a new resident to the island, I was impressed with how clean and organized it is. Service with a smile, as well.

There will be a plastic bag ban in nanaimo starting jul 1st, 2021, I hate how thrifties gives out paper bags, they got no handles and they fall apart within seconds of being in the rain. I hope starting jul 1st, 2021 thrifties will stop using paper bags and use cloth bags only.

For a smaller store or packs in a lot of food to meet many different food type needs. The bakery goods like the cupcakes are unreal of you have a sweet tooth. The ginger cookies are my weakness and a perfect thing to bring to a party or a friend's. Friendly and helpful staff. I forgot my PIN once and was mortified but a woman staff member handled it so wonderfully so I keep going back. It's the staff that can make a place, even a grocery store.

I was in today at the floral shop, they were really rude. I was very taken back I did not expect to be talken to in that way. I was there to pick up ballons! My fellow manager at work told me to call and see if the balloons were ready last night and if not you can pick them up at 9am today! The girl last night said were closing and they are not done, we close in 5 mintues, I said ok ill be in at 9am. She said that is unrealistic that they would be ready by 9, I said that's fine ill come get them after 9am. She than phoned my worked at 9am, said your ballons are ready, I said Oh I didnt think they would be so I arranged a ride for 11am to grab them, she said you need to pick them up ASAP. I said ok!' When we got there, I said hi, no one said hi or looked in our direction. I explained to them sorry about the confusion, the girl last night said it was unrealistic about the ballons being ready at 9am. The one look girl with dark brown hair and black glasses went off at me, she said, thats not what I said, if i said the ballons would be done at 9am they will be done at 9am, I was in shock and didn't say a thing. My employee and I were really hurt by her reaction. As we grab the ballons and turned to walk away she continued to say things at us. Usually Thrifty members are pleasant but this was the worse customer service I have ever had, and I work in the industry. If my employee spoken to a guest this way, I would explain to them that is not how you talk to a guest. Customer service should be your number one priority, put your customer first. I get there is miscommunication between people but no customer should be treated in a hostile matter.

Thrifty's can be alittle expensive but they make up for it with service and quality. Their deli selection is great, the hot selections are quite good. The beef ribs are amazing!! So is the Prime Rib - perfectly seasoned!! Gravy and potatoes make it a real treat! And they have Organic Roast Chickens !! Salad bar is pretty good to.

I enjoy shopping at Thirfty's. Always a cashier available, no waiting. Shop for my meat here, only here. Produce is always wonderful. Always order bd cakes from bakery. Deli has wonderful options.

Can be a little expensive and not as many good deals as there used to be. I also tried their self checkout as the lines for reg. checkout were so long. Unfortunately the item i had didn't have a sticker on it to scan, so had to wait for the attendant to help me, I didn't see where I was to input the $2 discount sticker off. So I had to wait for the attendant again to go to a till to get my refund. What should have taken less than 5 minutes took more than 10 minutes. Wasn't impressed.

Best deli sandwiches also great price on fresh halibut of 18.10 per pound. A commercial fishing boat the Tantrum 1 was unwilling to price match. Charging locals 6.90 per pound more for frozen halibut. Good on Trifty Foods

We bought it on the 20th and this was for my family... side of food poisoning on Christmas day for everyone? We have been shopping Thriftys since they have been open. I find the staff are always friendly and helpful. We shopped for some seafood and had a nice young man serve us. He had only been working a few shifts. You could not tell. His name was Matthias. We will be back. Thanks Thriftys for keeping the shoppers and staff safe.

I live across the street from this store. I have had a few bad experiences at this store. One day I came home to realize I was missing a single item. I went back to the store and was treated poorly by the staff there. I was told they were going to review the camera to make sure I was telling the truth. This completely caught me off guard. I am a good customer. I probably shop there 5 days a week. I felt like I was being treated like a criminal. I spend thousands of dollars a year there. I then told them I wouldn't come back. Then one of their staff told me that they had my missing item. Today I went to the lotto counter. The lady there gave me aptitude because I had more than 5 items. I was probably over the limit by a couple of items. I didn't realize there was a limit at the till. I didn't feel very welcome at this store. There was no-one behind me in the line up. I work at Woodgrove. Walmart is right there. Thriftys is extremely expensive. They are probably the most expensive grocery store in the city. I am not given aptitude and Walmart is considerably cheaper. Most of the items are 25% to 50% cheaper than Thriftys. You often see things double the cost at Thriftys versus Walmart. I will eliminate most of my shopping there. I will only buy an odd item if it was missed in my grocery shop.

I normally really like this store however..... They have stopped controlling the number of people in the building and honestly it is worse that Costco - which does control its numbers. It is cheek by jowl in there on a busy Saturday. As much as I find Quality Foods does not have the same selection, it's safer these days.

Sunday July 5 , 1 person working front counter in deli, other was losing chicken . I had 3 people in front of me and 4 behind me, 2 walked away. My turn I wanted to order deli trays for july 10 she was very busy and asked me to call the phone line , after waiting 20 minutes I said ok. Today I called to order and was told delivery for deli trays is full. Not impressed. I have now ordered from quality foods , also delivering and the same price but very happy to have my business.

The management is utterly incompetent and very unprofessional. Their security detachment from Blackbird Security threatens their clients at the door, and demands medical information, which is illegal. I was just arrested there for doing nothing other than shopping for spices and produce. My crime? Not wearing a useless textile over my breathing holes, and refusing it due to medical exemption is legal and allowed. Having been a loyal customer for several years, spending untold thousands at their establishment, I have nothing but bad things to say about the facility and those that operate it. All friends, family, and associates will be getting this information and will be welcomed to shop elsewhere. You're incompetent team is shooting themselves in the foot, and we will take our business elsewhere. Sorry for your loss. Being that mandates are not law, expect a law suit in the coming days for violating my Human Rights. If you're reading this, don't shop at this establishment.

I don't understand their pricing...yet food quality is high. fresh food policy exist? Only very few discounts ... Like Save on foods ...almost none... So what do they do with products if not much people ? Chanterelles 16cad/lb while town is loaded with them in forests and they could get for 4-5cad/lb + clean/ packing cost.

Thrifty Foods Port Place Mall location is the very best smaller sized grocery store we've ever been in. It's very clean, extremely well stocked with an amazing variety of items. The deli/cheese counter has very good variety considering space availability. The fish/seafood counter is amazing, as is the bakery. The staff are plentiful, friendly and go out of their way to help at every opportunity. You should support this downtown star every chance you get!!

The most expensive store in the valley. Meat section is overpriced and quality of cuts isn’t that great. Butchers block or Guenter brothers hands down. Not sure how they can charge the price per lb they do on their meats it’s highway robbery. It all comes from the same few suppliers.. Anytime there is a “sale” it’s not a deal it other stores everyday price. I shop there on occasion only if I have to. Surprised to see how busy it is when you consistently get ripped off. I’ll give them they have some unique items but you’re paying well above premium for them.. Also what’s with the delivery truck that constantly blocks the road at the front of the store... you have a loading dock use it..

Thrifty foods is a good store, it has pretty much anything you need in fresh foods, canned goods, bakery items and all other food necessities. The average price may be more on some items, but overall Thrifties is competitive with larger chains.
