REVIEWS OF Troll's Restaurant IN West Vancouver

Pooya A

Right by the water in horseshoe bay. Lots of street parking in front and parking in back. Currently due to covid the back lot has been converted to patio seating. Fish tacos were great but I wouldn’t recommend the poutine. Great spot to grab food before or after taking the ferry.

Mnoho Spisy

Troll's Restaurant has been a mainstay in Horseshoe Bay for generations. The interior hasn't changed much but that adds to the charm. The prices are not unreasonable given the prime oceanview location beside the ferry terminal. I recommend the haddock and yam fries with a pint of Fat Tug. Make sure to sit out on the patio on a sunny day. But be careful, you might miss your ferry!

Dan Hejna

Destination fish & chips well worth the trip to Horseshoe Bay.

Kris Toijonen

Still the best fish pie and beef lasagna in town

Baz Cardinal

Fantastic view. Good food. Good service. Warm inside. You don't need anything more when it's minus 5 outside.

Sovanna Kim

Had the 2-piece Haddock Fish and Chips, which were, despite what the menus says, not that great. Service was fantastic; the wait staff are very friendly. Nice patio overlooking the Ferry Terminal and waterfront. I would come back here again, for sure.

Elizabeth Mwangi

Had breakfast before taking the ferry. The staff was very friendly and always asked if I needed anything else

Simon Kaulius

Fish and chips! It's what they do. It was excellent and we felt very safe with all of the physical distancing they put in place. We went as a family of 5 and had no wait at 11am on a Sunday.

A S

Convenient take out counter with pretty quick service. Portions are actually quite large, I ordered 2 pieces and one would have been enough for me! Fish is nicely battered and the chips are very good. Price is fairly reasonable. A smaller meal cost more in Steveston and Horseshoe Bay is prettier too!

Glenda Bacchus

One of my favorite place for breakfast when I go for a ride. Nice decent portion size. Coffee is refillable also. Good stop also if you are waiting for the ferry.

Deborah Ezzy

Over the decades, Trolls has become generic and simply adequate. The clam chowder used to be legendary, and now it tastes like acidic tomato soup with canned clams, thickened with corn starch. I wanted to go into the kitchen and show them how to make it. $22 for the large bowl. I'm finally done with this place.

Adam Powell

Fantastic burgers with crisp vegetables and flavourful fries. A view of the harbour and mountains beyond just adds to the already great atmosphere.

Hooman Shahrokhi

It was food but didn't taste like much. Not worth the money... Better spent next door at olive & anchor. We were Troll'd into thinking this was a restaurant. We literally got our meal, took a few gross bites, paid and then went next door for some food. Don't waste your time or money here.

Kevin Gartner

- 30 minutes waiting for a server to take our order. The manager claims that there was a miscommunication between the servers … sure can happen. - mistake in our order … ordered a haddock and got a halibut - told the server who placed the plate in front of us that we ordered a haddock and were told very rudely to speak to our server.

Noah O

Great service, attentive but totally overpriced for what we got!!! Service isn't everything!!! When we questioned why our food looked like it was just "slapped" together barely edible we were told that's just how it comes, the fries were the best part of the meal????. Quite sad considering Trolls reputation.

Kyle Friesen

My review is based on only one time in this place, clean, fresh, view and food are enjoyable, service was good, friendly. This place was always busy before Covid.

ewan quirk

Well, here is a lovely restaurant in a lovely location, a short walk from the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. The service is warm and friendly, the menu has a pretty good selection of eats, and the prices are not too crazy. Lots of tables and seats. Three of us went on a weeknight and were seated immediately, and the food came out after a short wait of 8-10 minutes. The 2-piece cod with chips is well portioned and the shrimp sandwich is good too. Parking is on the street. Overall, a very nice place to dine and take some time before you hop on the ferry.

I don't make reviews usually but this place impressed me. Their portions are HUGE, and food is delicious. I loved the yam fries.

This is of course the world famous trolls seafood resaraunt that you are asking about right. The prices are surprisingly fantastically affordible. And of course the food is great. Fairly busy as expected but really, with great food at a reasonable price you're bound to have a busy restaurant, It's just expected.

Travis Booth

Had some time to kill waiting for the ferry and found this place in the village. For a seafood restaurant they make a great lasagna. Quick service also had me back to the ferry on time.

Amanda Welti

Didn't get to the food unfortunately, they closed the takeout window cause of order overload but I hear its good

Anthony Fast

I've been here a couple times when I'm going the ferry. It's a hit or miss, with both food and service. I've gone and the food and service was really good and then another where the food was bland and the customer service just wasn't there.

Mallory Thomas

Great service, amazing location and super tasty. We have been very lucky to be served by Mr. Troll himself who is the 3rd generation owner operating this awesome restaurant. Eventhough it was 3:30 pm, the restaurant was busy which shows how much people love their food.

James Shaw

Great food and service with reasonable prices. However, there is a gap between the roof and the awning which can make outdoor seating a bit uncomfortable if it starts raining.

Soheil Sahraei

The food was good. They still don't allow dine in. Take out only but the patio was open for sitting with self serve.

Ryan McLeod

Late/Last ferry.. you've driven for hours to get to Horseshoe Bay... you'll eat what they give you! French Onion soup... about an inch crust of cheese.. too thick to cut or deal with.. it nearly filled the bowl. Some soup was under it! Fish & chips, so so.

Dev VanCity

Not a big fan of the service nor the food here. After ordering our appetizer, our server forgot about us for nearly 20 minutes. She checked up on and was conversing with nearby tables but either didn't notice we were long done our single order of fries, or just thought that was all we were getting. She even looked at us and walked by many times but left too quickly for us to say anything. After numerous attempts at getting her attention, she took our main orders. However, she left before my boyfriend was even finished his sentence while ordering as he was attempting to make a modification to his burger. When the food came, it had that distinct pre-frozen patty taste and was relatively flavourless. I understand a lot of restaurants use frozen food, but for some reason it was much more noticeable here. Though the hostess and our server were very nice, the service just seems to be a bit lacking. I wouldn't come again, even if the service was a bit more attentive, as the price doesn't seem to reflect the quality of the food. It seemed like a nice family-run restaurant but was unfortunately disappointing.

lance Preston

You would think a place with views and ambiance like this a ten dollar breakfast special would be decent. Wrong. McCain reheated hash browns. Store bought bread. Thin cheap bacon and low quality eggs . When I asked for a newspaper in this place that has over 50 tables the response was "oh it's being used.". Wow. BC what is happening to you.

EMMANUEL OSORIO

Classic B.C. family dining at its best! Friendly staff and good size portions for all appetites. Must go here anytime to visit Horseshoe Bay.

Elvis Do

I was having a terrible day when I entered trolls. I was hangry and overwhelmed from traveling and children. When I went to order my drink I had no idea it was the manager who was taking our order. She returned shortly after and told me she saw how hard of a time I was having and was going to buy it for me. Not often these days you see such a random act of kindness. It truly turned my day around. On top of that the food was amazing and the service was the most on point I've seen in years. I later told my mom and little did I know she has also been going there for 20 years. Thank you Kim you are amazing!

Mary Lou Sanders

Great food, generous portions and reasonable prices. The Halibut fish and chips were delicious! Nice casual and relaxed atmosphere. Loved it.

Joey Thiessen

The food is actually disgusting. For $40 + tip, I got 4 TINY chicken strips that were soggy and chewy and had no flavour whatsoever. Soggy fries and 1 piece of less than mediocre halibut. This food is worse than concession stand food and a little league baseball park and I’m not even exaggerating. Super disappointed and will not go back again. I’m shocked they’re still in business. Only good thing about the place is the location! If only they had good food!

Hendrik Nel

Family owned. ❤ The best halibut and chips I've had in Vancouver.

I first ate at Troll's as a young kid over 40 years ago & in all of the times that I have eaten there since then, I have never had a bad experience with the food or the service. Tonight I took my fiance, soon to be stepdaughter & her friend there & it was so good. My soon to be stepdaughter had the cod burger & said that it was one of the best burgers she had ever eaten.

Ilke vz Bakker

Food was awesome, allergens were clearly indicated by the server. On that note, great service. Server with the beard was top notch. Knew the menu very well. Unexpectedly great coffee.

Nikki LeSire

My takeout order was fine - proper New England Clam Chowder and haddock & chips. All first-rate.

jager German

I ate here shortly before the couple that owned it passed away a few days apart. They actually won the lotto but continued to live normal lives. Wonderful fish and chips and even vegan options. Friendly and helpful staff. Great view by the harbor seeing the ferries to Victoria.

Christian Kleeberg

Great food and service. Breakfast menu is the best in the village and it’s a great place to kick back while waiting for the ferry.

rustam ahmed

Just had lunch while waiting for ferry. We were advised about long waiting times when arrived. So we were prepared but when you wait for long time and then get disappointed ☹️ with food quality. It’s a total let down. Ordered a wrap, seafood “stew” and salad. Salad was warm and leaves soggy. The seafood stew was awful looking and had canned vegetables, just not what I expected and for $21 land other food looked thrown together. Server was great. Hopefully I’m not gonna be sick ????

Angela Lard

A classic eatery by any standard. Wide range of menu options and all at reasonable prices. Well known for fish and chips. I had the halibut which was great. Staff very responsive and helpful. If the bottled beer was a tad colder that would be awesome.

michael chen

as a person who doesn’t consume alcohol in any way, i was a little sad about not being able to try their fish and chips but salmon was great. the salad was good too but overall a little bland and very average. the servers were super nice tho. overall, go there if you consume alcohol

Great, beautiful restaurant with delicious food. We tried chowder, crabcakes, clubsandwich with shrimp, and sliders for kids - all was cooked perfectly. My personal favorite was crabcakes. Best crabcakes I have ever had. The kids were given crayons and sheets for coloring and stuff. Everyone had a great time! Thank you Troll's!

I went here while waiting to pickup a friend from the ferry. The food was over priced a single piece of fish with a small amount of fries was over $25 with a tip. The fish was fine but the fries were served cold. I got a half bit of tartar sauce and the waitress seem unimpressed when I asked for more. I would advise people looking for fish and chips to head over to c-lovers as they offer hot food and better service.

Alex Martinez

Great food and great service by manager Holly. She's the nicest person i have ever dealt with in a restaurant in my entire life. However, one of the employees was extremely rude. She gave us the worst attitude and showed no respect for our table nor the family that was beside us. Her actions lead the woman sitting next to us to take her family and leave the restaurant. Maybe she was having a bad day but she shouldn't have taken it out on customers. Other than that i really enjoyed the food there.

Lexy Wishlow

As usualTrolls was excellent in both service and quality of food. The restaurant is very particular about following Covid protocol with all staff wearing masks, providing dividers between seating areas, and ensuring that customers are seated the required social distancing apart in areas that do not have dividers. This has always been one of my favorite breakfast places and I was delighted to be able to enjoy the great service and food during such a challenging pandemic.

Bahram Akesteh

Fish and chips were excellent. Great service, love the back patio. Beer selection was good too!

Jay Z

Servers are very friendly & energetic. Reliable, ok food. Some nice seafood choices. Somewhat reasonably priced. Will return when waiting for a ferry again.

Ee Swee Ying

Disappointing: For a place that's rumored to have one of the better fish and chips on the west coast, this I stead proved to be utterly average. Chips were slightly dry, fish was overcooked, and the whole experience smelled and tasted of canola oil. Wait staff were polite and helpful.

Talal Hasan Khan

Fries are terrible. All the time every single time. Water is from the tap. No filtration. Food IMO is mediocre at best. Unfortunately it's one of the only restaurants in the area. Whoever gives good reviews about the food here is delusional.

Neil McMullin

Food was overall good but the service could've been better. Our server messed up on my order twice and provided mediocre service. Besides that their seafood chowder was very delicious along with their fish and chips.

Joshua King

Really good fish and chips. Fast service and great portions. Pricing is fair as well. There's lots of fish and chips shops here and this one is definitely the best

Tyler Nelson

Thought we'd finish off a nice family day out with some fish and chips, any parent will tell how hard eating out can be and what an even greater luxury during these covid times. We were shocked when our server approached us and told us to "find a quieter toy" for our 9 month old child who was happily amusing himself with a squeak toy. In 4 years of parenting I've never experienced anything like it and as we pulled the toy off our child I've never wished to see him scream the house down as I did today. The restaurant was half empty and almost every setting was another family. We will never be back and our experience will be shared with our friends, as every bad experience usually is.

Scott Halliday

My wife and I had some time to kill before our ferry ride to Nanaimo. So I decided to take her to Trolls. Saw it on Google map, look good, and I wasn't disappointed. Really great chowder, big portion sizes and the food came fast too. So if you are ever in horseshoe Bay I highly recommend it for great seafood

Mina A

Stopped to grab a bite since I was craving fish and chips from the long ferry wait. Thought the food was pretty average. The fish's batter was too thick and the fries were not fresh and hot (bit on the dry side). The crab cake was quite unique but I felt the coconut flakes overpowered The crab meat. On the positive side, the portions were pretty decent. There is patio seating in the back and the front.

Julian “Mighty Jules” Taylor

Worst chowder I’ve had in ages. Must have come out of a bag. Clearly not made in house. If it was I’d be even more embarrassed. The cream sauce was so far from cream I don’t know how to describe it. No discernible seafood in the dish but small bacon was visible. I also had the French onion, was cold and had more bread than onions. Cheese on top was melty but overall wouldn’t reorder. Staff was great and service was quick.

saeed soltani

Great service great food fish and chips and burgers are great !

Albert Luk

Came on a very busy Family day and the hostess couldn't keep up or keep organized. We were freezing at a table by the door but were desperate for a seat after a 30 min wait ( was told 15min) so we took it. Another 30 min for the food. Recommend going elsewhere. We wish we had

Mei Yew

I was craving a well battered fish and chips for lunch. We chose Troll's in Deep Cove. The service was great and the food really "hit the spot"!

Karl Geluk

Great and friendly service! The Oyster Burger is out if this world! And don't even get me started in the fish and chips! It's a bit far to go for lunch but if you're with friends and willing to make the drive it's WORTH IT!

ycar84

Food good service good too^^ people are so handsome and so beautiful. View is good

M. Tse

Very friendly staff but... Sand in the clam chowder and oysters. The replacement bowl was a bit better but still Sandy. The oysters were just filled with Sand alot of sand. Well I think that will be my last time going to Trolls. I used to love it.

Hasan Farahani

Our family has been going to troll's for years and their fish and chips never disappoints. There's lots of seating and even on busy days you can get a spot pretty quickly. Service is pretty quick and friendly

David Crymble

Good food. Good view. Hard to find parking if you come in the afternoon. Must come early or late late.

I've dined here dozens of times. Consistently decent food, and good service when it's not too busy. It gets too busy too often, so timing is everything when visiting Troll's!

William Denny

Wanted breakfast and they have 2 breakfast options that last all day. Service didnt go above and beyond but wasn't bad at all. Don't order the orange juice though, very watered down with ice in it. Bacon cooked perfect! Good diner overall.

Marco Yuen

Always stop in here when in Horseshoe Bay. Great, Safe, protocols in place. Food good , service friendly, however Worse Coffee, should have being forewarned when ' cud be' was ans to my question is it Fresh.

Red lights illuminating over tables, the whole Troll’s Restaurant was radiating a warm atmosphere. The receptionist at the entrance and the waitress serving us were truly courteous and friendly. I had Fish’n’Chip, the specialty of the house for 75 years, and a bowl of warm and tasty clam chowder. The inside of the restaurant was warm and cheerful, having a touch of antique; out the window was the beautiful waterfront views of Horseshoe Bay!

Kj Brey

Cmon lady!! that was definitely not halibut you originally tried to serve me. I know for a fact it was not. I love halibut and happily pay a premium when I do order it as a special treat when I eat out.Maybe sole, flounder or COD all of which I do not eat. Thank you for correcting my order the salmon craser salad was 100% p, erfect! No hard feelings still love ya!

Always secretly happy when we miss the ferry and get to pop by and eat. Beautiful views, friendly staff, delicious food, decent portions. What more could you want?

Vintiquity

Cool restaurant with an interesting theme. I personally found it to be a little pricey for fish and chips. It is a good location, close to the bay

Afif Mango

Been here a couple times. The first time I went they were busy so service wasn't to good I didn't think much , I know how a busy restaurant can get and didn't hold it against them, but just recently went back to horse bay for a business trip and decided to try them one again, boy was that a mistake. Didn't get served water at all Intel I asked for some 2nd our server ignored us basically the whole time, I had to go up to another server to place a order... the restaurant wasn't busy at all this time so no excuses. They most be racist or something because our server was normal to her other guests but overall terrible service all typical racist white peoples who hate anyone that comes in and isn't white. Will never step foot inside again.

Peter Jokan

By far one of the three best fish and chip restaurants I've ever been to. Your eyes can be bigger than your stomach though so I strongly urge moderation when you think about getting a second piece of fish. I also suggest sitting in to eat. Getting it from the window and trying to find a good place to sit down and eat it around Horseshoe Bay is near impossible. I tried to sit and eat at a nearby fountain and it was extremely uncomfortable.

Greg Goss

Got here with my friend. The food is pricy, staff is good and polite. I ordered salmon and chips, but fries are bad. Didn't try that kind of fries for a long time. Would not recommend. Unless you order something else.

B Lastname

Ordered a veggie burger. It was okay. There was no wow factor apart from the fact you get it for 14 bucks with a view. Overall good

Rachael Kramer

The chairs are comfortable. The food scrumptious, service is great. When you still have an hour before the ferry you can stay and read.

Wyanne W

Great restaurant!! I always order the cod fish and chips. It's enjoyable to watch the ferries arrive and depart from Horseshoe Bay.

Andrew Bouzane

Have been here many times over the years but most recently through this summer and just have to say, there are better places to order a meal in the area. They are very light on the portions and especially the proteins, not good value for the prices they are charging. Also no eats on their happy hour :(

Roy Snow

Miserable experience! we came an hour away and the site was saying close at seven. we arrived at 5:40 and they apologized the kitchen was closed. We just saw them serving tables. They are not interested in the hours of their operation. There they do what they want, indifferent to the suffering of the people!

Aliyah MacKenzie

A very old and cosy restaurant with a great view of ocean. The food is pretty good but “fish and chips” is the reason that you are here. There are only 2 breakfast options so it’s not the best place if you are looking for a wide variety of brunch options. Staff are either really friendly or not at all.

Ever since I first visited Vancouver. My friend told be about this place, but I could never find the time to go. Today I finally went. And I can say without a doubt that Trolls is the best place in Vancouver to get Fish&Chips

Samantha Wong

Great food sadly under staffed. Batters are nice and light for the fish and other seafood. Calamari is really good! Waitress was nice but again I think kitchen is under staffed.

Ryan Little

Great place. Food was delicious and exquisite. Staff were very nice and helpful. Overall, the restaurant had a great and fun vibe

Brian R

The food was good however the service was less than stellar. Hostess was rather rude after we entered via the rear door and complained we failed to report to her despite no signage. We were short one table setting, requested cutlery however none came leaving us to obtain it from an unoccupied table. No offer to refill water until after the meal was finished

Very good food; patient in the rush and concern of customers trying to make the ferry; fast and friendly and personable. Thank you.

Friendly enough service with food that’s not-quite pub-worthy. Bland and overpriced.

They have an awesome fish and chips, chowders are great and a very nice view of the bay. Staff are very nice and helpful. Give it a try if you are around!

Troll's is a family friendly restaurant that serves the nearby ferry traffic in Horseshoe Bay. The restaurant is easily walkable in 5-10 minutes from the waiting area for the ferry. The restaurant has a beautiful view of the bay and there is a patio outside for warmer days. My wife and I both had the fish and chips. The portion sizes are large and filling. Two piece meals are ideal if you're very hungry or planning on sharing a plate. The fish is served hot and crisp. The cod was tender and flakey. The fries were a bit soggy, but it could have been from the oil on the fish dripping on them. If you're looking for a spot to grab lunch while you wait for your ferry, you could check out Troll's, especially if you have a family and are looking for a diner like experience.

Luna Akeyna

I had the two piece halibut fish and chips. The food was amazing! The fish was so moist, you barely had to touch to to break a piece off. The service was fast and very friendly. You couldn't bear the views of the water and the ferries, the atmosphere inside too was amazing.

The MacGuffin

Fantastic family type diner with a warm inviting atmosphere. Coffee is always fresh and most importantly, bottomless. All day breakfast is tasty.

Stuart Rolland

Had the pleasure of dining at Trolls this evening while waiting on the ferry. Person at the door could have had more enthusiasm greeting and seating us, but it was near closing time, so understandably she could have been in anticipation to end her shift. We had excellent service by Cole who was very pleasant and very perceptive to our needs as our meal was time sensitive to the ferry schedule. Very tasty and well presented. Texan burger was delicious. Would recommend Trolls and revisit.

Melissa N

Expensive but good. Ordered from the takeout window which is a limited menu. 2 piece halibut and fries for $23. The pieces were not a bad size and the batter was good. Home made coleslaw and tartar sauce - yum! ???? Instagram handle: @trollsrestaurant

Michael White

We drove out to horseshoe bay for fish & chips yesterday and specifically to Troll’s. We hadn’t been to Troll’s for a number of years and last time we were there the fish and chips were great. What a disappointment! The batter coating on the fish was overly cooked on the outside but slippery and raw on the inside. The fish fell right out of the batter coating and was extremely moist. Neither the batter or the fish were seasoned and it was very bland. Overall the fish and chips were very greasy. I had the yam fries and they were quite good but the regular fries were barely warm. Neither of us finished our meal and for hours after we ate we had a odd metallic idolized flavour in our mouths. We will never be back. I wondered when I saw another fish and chip restaurant across the street from Troll’s how they could possibly compete... but now I understand. Next time we go to horseshoe bay for lunch we will try C Lovers fish & chips instead.

Good reasonable prices food. Service is usually good, but had one experience where I waited for 15 minutes before I could place my order. They always have to train their waitresses to be attentive to water and drinks as I had to keep asking for water.

Mike Winter

Had the crabcakes and the halibut and fries. Crabcakes are moist with a nice chilli sauce, fish and chips were very good too

Glen MacPherson

I've had more exciting burgers, but this is a good place to spend the wait between sailings!

Ben Sagle

A pretty big location right on the waterfront of Horseshoe Bay. It often features a lineup to get in but we managed to skip the line by requesting the patio on a day with only little sun. The menu is pretty standard. The cod was really good. Not to much batter and good tasting. The clam chowder was decent, in taste and portion but nothing super special.

Tomas Williams

A full restaurant and they tell people they are closed......I guess business must be great!

Dave Million

Beautiful location, great service. Kids menu was good. Fish and chips were a bit soggy. Burger was perfect.

Bull Dozer

Fish and chips was over cooked. We got our food and our waiters came after we ate our pod to as us now is it. When we aid that fries were over cooked she said why did I say anything. And they had 8 waiters taking with only 6 tables had people. Not good food anymore.

Josh Loewen

Best fish and chips in Vancouver. Even though the menu doesn't show it, they let you order one of each: cod, halibut, salmon. I prefer the halibut, but they're all good. Note a single piece is enough to fill you up.

Red Murphy

It gets very busy before the ferry takes it to Nanaimo. So obviously a very popular spot. I can see why though. Great fish and chips and fish tacos.

Charrise Millan

I was in on Saturday Aug 1st for lunch with my granddaughter. Yes it was busy. I had a BLT. On one half of my sandwich there was a half slice of a small tomato mostly green. The other half of my sandwich had 2 halves of a small tomato again mostly green. With beautiful fresh tomatoes available now surely the cook should be more attentive to what is put in the food. My granddaughter had the hot dog and fries. I did not notice this order also included a glass of milk and ice cream. Heard patrons at the next table mention it. Our server asked if we wanted something else to drink besides water but never mentioned a beverage was included. Also we were not offered the ice cream dessert. All in all was disappointing.

Mihailo Stanojevic

Paid for 2 pieces halibut and chips for take out: went to the ferry to eat it and found out there was only one piece inside. Double check your order before leaving. Probably because of summer student jobs, they don’t really care to get the order right despite asking for your name.

The fish and chips were great and plenty. I would recommend the place.

We live in the neighborhood and would go to Troll's to support local businesses and not for the food, unfortunately, it's not as good as it was years ago. On August 29th, I and my little boy were not allowed on the front patio because the manager didn't accept my face covering. Also, I was not given any scientific explanation of the difference between their cloth mask and wrapped around my face double-layered sweater. Is Troll's also going to discriminate against women who are wearing hijab? Are you going to ask them to remove it and put a mask on? Very disappointed you treat people that way, you are not only lost us as your customer you also lost as a customer everyone I know.

Rhonda Thomas

Cute Interior with a very homey feel and the best Burger I've had in a long time (see Texan Burger) will most definately be coming back to try more, I only wish I'd had room for desert!

Pegah Azadeh

We got an order to go of tacos and calamari, the tacos were good, the calamari was more an onion dish with sprinkled calamari and everything was super soggy

Alessandra Arnese

haven’t tried the food but as soon as i came in was racialized by some old hag in the front thanks for ruining my day, i didn’t do anything to deserve that, i was kind, you were aggressive and rude for no reason. i left right away sorry about the bad review but i’m in such a bad mood because of your hostess.

Fish was soggy crab artichoke dip taste like nothing but cream cheese. Kids chicken strips was one strip and 2 half nuggets, there is more chicken in 4 piece chicken nuggets from McDonald's.

Gurmit Mehat

Great staff. Rhys was my server and he was very insightful and new a lot of history about the bay. Best fish and chips in town!

Jerome Mpyisi

We had a great breakfast here. You get more than you need to get full, I feel like I never have to eat again :-) free coffee-refill is very nice too. Staff was very nice and attentive

olga chnara

It’s lovely little place a must visit for us every time we visit Vancouver. Their fish and chips is like no other. Last time I had the salmon and it was mind blowing.

Maxime Santerre

AMAZING! Very busy, but definitely worth it!

Dan Tleu

The location is nice to visit and enjoy some cozy food. I had cod fish and chips which was fairly greasy bit tasty. It even reheated the next day fairly well. A good selection of menu items means there's something for everyone.

Kris Duerksen

They have plastic dividers between booths and it is clear that cleaning them is not part of their routine. They were visibly dirty with food/finger smudges. Food and service were okay. Caesar salad tasted funky and we only saw our server once after ordering.

Sig Zulu

Classic restaurant in the heart of the Horseshoe Bay. I love the atmosphere and the service always friendly. If you like fresh sea food then this is your place to stop by. In the menu everybody can find the right food to all taste (try the French Onion Soup... it is fantastic!)

Kahori Matsuo

Epic food at a very reasonable prices Great service from as soon as you enter, with staff that are friendly and are passionate about the business and the experience it gives you. Amazing value you money with breathtaking views across the harbour and the mountains beyond.

Gladice Silvius

Maybe it's nostalgia, but I seem to remember Troll's being a nice place at one time. Nowadays, the menu options are limited, the food is poor in quality(uncooked french fries, fish battered with about an inch of surrounding breading). Our waitress last time we were there mentioned that they do offer a "light batter" option, though it's not on the menu. Unless you want to eat about a loaf of bread's worth of batter with a few pieces of fish or a couple oysters, I'd recommend that. Service always seems to get orders wrong or miss items, but that's likely because of how busy they are. Pretty sure Troll's is subsisting almost entirely on ferry traffic with few options and nostalgic customers who forget it's not good food anymore, until its too late.

William Graham

Terrible service and racist waitress. First time in 6 years to experience racism in Canada. The waitress told the manger that we said we don't like to be served by a women after we complained about her bad treatment and disgusting attitude. She said that because we are arabs. One star is more than what this place deserves.

John Tait

4 stars because the coffee was not good. But I loved my meal! Thank you

Joel Wirāmu Pauling

I have been going to Trolls since the early 1970s. My Grandfather, Joe Sardone, was good friends with Joe Troll (Sr.) Every Sunday we would drive down to Horseshoe Bay. My Grandfather would park his car at the gas station, throw them the keys and we'd walk across the street. He would give a $2 bill to each of us and we'd run off to Jay-Cee's to buy candy or a small toy. (once, when I was 12, a Farrah Fawcett poster) We'd then head over to Troll's to find my Grandfather and Joe Troll laughing over coffee. We would order our Fish n Chips and they were as fantastic then as they are now. I love the caricatures of loyal, long time customers and personalities from the local community. Troll's is a cozy restaurant with history and great food. It's what we all wish we could have in our own home town. Keep it up Trolls.

The food was very good but it took us an hour to get it! It was very busy and it seemed the staff were stretched very thin. We were seated with menus and no greeting or info from the server, and it took 15 mins for our waitress to ask for our order, and *we* had to ask about the specials. By the time our food came we had to scarf it or risk missing our ferry.

Lisa Stewart

Had a wonderful experience here from start to finish! A warm reception, a kind and friendly server and a delicious tasty meal! It felt quite festive inside with the warm glow of the red lights over the tables! Truth be told I have been …

wayde johnston

Great fish and chips! Hosts took a while to seat people even though there was open tables. It's very loud inside. I recommend sitting outside weather permitting.

RodrigoBastias - com

The cod fish and chips ain't too shabby, not to mention the troll burger (bacon cheese). Although there is always room for improvement when it comes to attentive service because I had to call the waitress for more water. Food is a tad bit pricy, but my cravings for fish and chips somewhat made it worth my while.

Their menus are filthy dirty. All they said to me they've had a busy summer. They're so busy they don't care if you come back or not so their waitresses are so rude. Kind of like please don't come back. How to Seafood Clubhouse I had no Seafood in it and she just slapped some fake crab on my table and snickered

Rude front of house staff, waited several minutes and had to Interject so they would take my takeout order. When I suggested I wait on the outside patio she made a face like I had just said I had killed a baby. Fish and Chip options limited, only battered not crumbed. Mediocre at best.

We are breakfast before ferry ride. It's cute, and food was good. Nice views from restaurant.

Masato K

It’s good place to have morning before taking a ferry. But we’re waiting some dishes for a long time.

Dune Boon

Best fish and chips I have had in a really long time. Had the halibut and it was melt in your mouth good. The tartar sauce was a little sweet for my taste, but other than that great food and friendly, speedy service.

Mariah

Love this restaurant. Great food, friendly atmosphere, nice experience!

Bradley Vinish

A great restaurant that I will definitely go revisit! If you have an hour to wait for your ferry at the terminal, I definitely suggest you go to Troll’s if you’re hungry. It’s only a 5-10 minute walk from the terminal and a great way to pass your time! Great atmosphere, friendly staff and good food with a decent price point! Overall, a really good experience that I would recommend to anyone!

Tom

Went for breakfast before catching our ferry and it was awful; several tables complained and left with their food to-go or without their food! Terrible service, average food (home made style, nothing fancy). Plenty of servers but bad service - information re food, general attention & attitude. The kitchen staff, who were visible from our table, were relaxed and nonchalant. Considering the influx of customers correlates with the ferry schedule some sense of urgency is required.

Gerry Bates

One of the best Fish & chips. So good.

Krazy Kanuck

Made the mistake of going for fish and chips while waiting for the ferry... #1 they screwed up the order and had to ask a server to track it for us. #2 no napkins included in our take out order. #3 the absolute worst fish and chips I have ever had .. the amount of oil included with the food would have been plenty enough to do a complete oil change in my car ... do yourself a favour and avoid this place like the plague ..

Kunal Gupta

We drove here specifically after a hike because of the gluten free options. I have celiac disease and had read reviews that it was ok, I’m not sure if they have changed their prep or policies but I was advised they would not guarantee anything on their menu would not be cross contaminated with gluten and did not seem knowledgeable about how things were prepared. Not an option if you’re celiac or have a gluten allergy.

Ali Meraji

The food was pretty good, but the service was bad. Our server Darryl walked past our drinks on the bar 3 times, and once 10 minutes passed of them sitting there, I finally went up and retrieved them myself!! It was a slow day, we were surrounded by empty tables, so it's not because they were crazy busy serving others ???? Dissapointed because I used to love this place, but if we come back it'll definitely just be for takeout.

Bobby Yip

Very well placed on the seafront with a good view of the Ferry traffic. Very well run, with all Covid regulations strictly adhered to. Food plentiful and tasty - good value.

Jordan Nicksy

Quintessential west coast spot for fish n chips. Super good food and friendly staff, accommodating and helpful. I would have given 5 stars but they were out of both red and cream clam chowder which we were looking forward to.

Borislav Grigorov

Great experience at Trolls! The food was delicious and the service staff were attentive and considerate with a full house tonight as a result of the ferry cancellations. Kudos to the whole team who were on their game!

Ivan I

I've been here twice so far and i have to say that breakfast was better then dinner. The breakfast was simple/good and the dinner was a little soggy, the fish/fries didn't have the crisp and was a little cold. Just didn't do it for me and the service during dinnertime vs morning was very different. Dinner was unusually long and there was a family that came in way after us and our food arrived after theirs did ( i was confused). Over 30-40mins.

高瑞思

I think the trick with Troll's is to get there REALLY early. It's a restaurant so the service will be restaurant-paced, not eat-and-run-to-the-ferry paced. I've never had troubles with the food. Get there early, and expect a B+ meal not an A+. It's not fine dining, it's a great place to kill time by the water.

Jean-Pierre Chevalier

I had there bacon and eggs simple but good. Nice coffee and the service was very nice and attentive.

muna A

Enjoyed a meal here while waiting for friends to catch a Ferry. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Had great social interaction. Food was very yummy. Had the halibut. So tasty!! Price was reasonable for portions and satisfying. Sat inside as patio was full. Spacious and clean. Would recommend to anyone looking for a bite. Or to take food onto Ferry.

Matthew Outerbridge

I have ordered take out from here a few times. The food is decent but a bit expensive for what it is. The service for take out is hit and miss as well. But it's convenient if you're waiting for the ferry and would rather avoid paying BC Ferry prices for a quick meal

Ameen Khaldoun

Great service, quality food! Go-to place before boarding ferry or waiting for a friend to arrive. Don't serve alcohol till 11am, the host me told me go down the block to this place, I go there only to find out I got trolled cause that place don't open till 11am; wife n I had a good laugh lol. I go back to trolls to have delicious breakfast and hot chocolate. Read about the history of the troll family.

Great location, street parking is available, and the staff is really nice. However, the food is overpriced. Our order came with a lot of toast, the sausage was not great, and the pancakes were ok. I guess you pay for the view.

Meaghan Walker-Williams

Service was good location great. Fish and chips were awesome but chowder was a bit bland. Overall not bad

Naser Nowaf

Best fish and chips i have ever had. Only slight issue was that they piled too much on a small plate so as soon as you start eating it makes a mess. But still delicious.

Cod fish tacos were tasty and the scrimp appy was also nicely cooked.

Anastasiia Viun

Miss the ferryor just in the area???. Hungry???. Halibut and chips where amazing, friendly prompt service accompanied with a beautiful view. Can't go wrong. Must try

Emma Walden

We had lunch here while waiting for the ferry. They were timely (we mentioned which ferry we were waiting for) and friendly. I had a Fabulous BLT-chicken Gluten-free wrap with guacamole - it was excellent. The price was just a touch high for a wrap, but reasonable due to the location (captive customers waiting for ferries can be charged more for walking-distance amenities). It was a sunny interior, but I didn't mind the sun in my eyes since I have been stuck in a vehicle for the last 3 days. Maybe a window shade would be good if I was in a different mood, though. All in all, I'd highly recommend this restaurant for those waiting for the ferry!

Florencia Moreira

Raw, runny batter was runny. Worst fish and chips I've ever had. When you pick up one end of a piece, the whole batter casing slides off. Terrible quality

Chris Hutchcroft

Visited while waiting for a ferry. Food came out in a timely manner, with a mix-up on an order but was fixed within 2 minutes. Only criticism is the burger bun was a bit dry. Everything else was delicious.

Gordon Dick

Definitely gives a roadtrip vibe. Always feels like you're out of town on vacation with the family. Friendly staff and good food. I would just say maybe improve your clam chowder a bit

Doug Black

Super weird policy, ordered a takeout at front with generous tip and saw the back patio afterwards, asked if we could sit there, even though that it was empty, they refused to do so! We even said we could order a beer if that’s the problem, still refused, very disappointing experience

Jessica Munday

Just the best fried oysters in West Van !!!. Service with a Smile and So Courteous !!! ????❄????❄????❄????❄????❄????❄????

karen brunskill

As good as usual, fish and chips are crispy, the chowder is not bad. Service is quick and prompt, the restaurant has good atmosphere and some history as well as free parking in property. Price is a bit higher than a regular fish and chips but overall good!

M Ping

This was the strangest lunch I have ever had. Staff was above average, friendly and helpful. The menu was strange and didn't make sense. No soft drinks listed, had to ask about pricing. Pricing for their signature Fish and Chips was weird between I and 2 pieces. $18 for 1 piece and $20 for 2 pieces and $9 for a 3rd piece. We split the 2 piece and saved significantly and they gave us separate bills for $10 each. So if you can do some fast figuring the lunch cost was reasonable but if you don't it can be very expensive. Trolls is known for their Fish and Chips but they have an extensive menu but do the math before ordering

Ronna Stefan

I came in here for a quick bite before the ferry and found that it was a cozy restaurant with lovely servers. I had the Cod Burger and would recommend it. I’d definitely have it again. I love that they offer local, craft beer as well. Great food and service, can’t go wrong!

We enjoyed Trolls. Simple little restaurant with a nice breakfast/fish and chips menu. Great views, patio and good service. It seems to be very popular with the local West Van / Horseshoe Bay crowd as it has been in business for 70 years.

Cory Couture

The place is cozy, warm and welcoming. The fish and chips is excellent, and I love my cream chowder! Food was served fast and the staff is very friendly and attentive. Highly recommended!

Jesse Wayne

Food tasted great. I usually have excellent Fish Pie, but tried the wrap today. Loaded with various kinds of fish, with tangy sauce. Salad was a bit limp, though. Attentive staff.

Absolutely the worst restaurant service I've ever had. We showed up at 6:00 pm, a table of 3, with a toddler. We were shown to our table, and our server, Jasper, took our drink and food order. Five minutes later, he told us the kitchen was really busy, and that there would be a 30 minute wait, which we said was fine. We did ask if it was possible for the toddler's chicken and fries to arrive earlier, as he was quite hungry, but Jasper said it wasn't. As time passed, we noticed a table that had arrived 5 minutes after us, had already received their meal, and we enquired as to why. We were told they had ordered food that was different from ours and some sections of the kitchen would naturally be faster. I looked, at their fish and chips didn't look any different than the fish and chips I had ordered, but said nothing as the toddler's mother again explained the toddler was hungry that's why we were inquiring. We sat an nursed our drinks as more time passed. By now, 50 minutes had passed, and a table of 5 that had arrived 30 minutes after us received their order (a variety of dishes). Again, we asked, and Jasper said, straight-faced, that he had cancelled our order for us. We thought he was joking. In fact, one of us said, "haha, very funny." Finally, at 60 minutes, and with no further information coming from Jasper, and with several tables now empty, I went to the serving station, told another server of our situation, cancelled our order, and asked for the bill for our drinks. As I was paying, Jasper finally came up to me and said, sarcastically, and with a smirk on his face, "I hope you have a WONDERFUL evening." I was flabbergasted, and called him a little prick (a momentary flash of anger I now regret), and we left. Afterwards, we called to speak to the manager, and she told us Jasper had relayed to her a story that was quite different from what actually happened. Will not be going back.

Melissa Brackx

The crab cakes are fantastic. The service was attentive and friendly. Have never been disappointed on coming here.

Was just in "trolls" sat there for over ten minutes at he table beside the POS system and every waitress ignored me or wouldn't look at me. I ride the ferry every weekend and will NEVER go back and will spread my story far. Never been treated like that before. SHAME ON YOU FOR USING THE TROLLS NAME. Walked down the street and had a table and beer within three min. Don't waste your time and walk a block further for real fish and chips and better beers.

Jennifer Helwing

Tempted to give it 4 stars, but that wouldn't be fair. Food, service and portion sizes were great. Price is a bit high, but suspect that is partly the location and partly the fish costs.

Ruben Perez

One of the waitresses here was amazing to our family (toddler and baby included) when we underestimated how much time we had before the ferry. She helped us pack everything up and rushed us out of there. I’m a big fan of this place because of her (I didn’t get her name but she had really cool short hair). The food was great too!

Aki Chacha

Love this place, the food is tasty. It is a family friendly place located in beautiful Horseshoe bay.

Katherine

Service was great! Really friendly server. However, the food was average at best. Some meals were better than others. The best out of our dinner for 9 people was the portobello mushroom burger and the seafood linguine (the tomato-y sauce was tasty but the seafood itself wasn't the freshest). The seafood chowder was very disappointing, too bland. My sister ordered salmon which was supposed to come with roast vegetables, they said they were all out so offered a salad instead. She asked for hot vegetables because she wanted a hot meal, not salad, and they charged for an extra side of veggies... Overall it was just a disappointing meal. Every dish could have been better. It's definitely overpriced for what you get.

Patrick Fillion

People nice. Food mehhhh. Area super cute. The quality of their food and recipes has not improved in 70 years. They are content with average. But view is nice.

Couldn't figure out why this place is called "Troll's." Obviously not because they troll for your fish meal. According to our server, all the fish is frozen. And also not because you are served by diminutive beings with pointy hats. Annnnnyway, this spot is more like a family restaurant that serves beer. Conveniently located next to the ferry, we tried out their fish and chips. The traditional cod & chips was just okay. Not flaky in the least, the cod seemed kind of mushy. I had the haddock which was much better. Sleeves of beer were $6.50, which seemed kind of high to me, considering the setting and all, but perhaps that is the price of beer in family restaurants? The place seems very popular with the locals and fairly busy for midweek. Lots of TVs abound showing both ice hockey and football. However, I didn't appreciate an interior view of the ladies restroom from my booth seat. Next time we take the ferry out, we'll try a different option!

Aleah Kane

Been going here with the family for years. love this place. Their fish and chips is top noch for sure. Cant go wrong. plus there is great views of beautiful horseshoe bay

Kaveh Hajighazi

The old woman hosting was extremely unfriendly, I asked her if she could grab my server so I could order for my friend and she rudely raised her voice saying my serving was waiting for said friend… which doesn’t make much sense. After food was delivered, our server didn’t check in or offer us anything, just came back and asked if we wanted a box (clearly wanting us to leave). Will not be back and the food wasn’t good. Our order came with “vegetables” I never would have served. All around terrible experience

Claire Cassidy

Halibut doesnt taste like halibut 3 of us had the same opinion either the fish was stale or overcooked or something was off

Vera Pilecki

The best fish and chips outside of the UK. The rest of their menu is great too!

Mike Dwyer

Disappointing food. Our server was great. Might be a good idea to clean the deep fryers more frequently as it just tasted like dirty oil. Batter on fish was way to thick and lacked any crunch. For the prices they charge, you can find much better. I doubt that id ever go back. Too bad too as years ago, the food was much better.

Jon Spade (JonSpade)

This place was hopping and we love a good fish and chip so we stopped in after looking at the menu. The service was attentive but the food was mediocre even for a diner... chips weren't fresh, the Trollslaw (clever name) was basic big-bucket coleslaw with sunflower seeds added to it, and the cod batter was thick and heavy. The fish tacos appy pushed this review from 2 stars to 3 as was a big portion and the sauces were full of flavor. The kids ice cream cone is also a double scoop of real ice cream, not soft serve, which I appreciate. We won't be going back as the price is to high for what you actually get.

Jim Wilson

We had the Cod and chips. AMAZING!!!!

Yulin Hsieh

Very good fish and chips for a good price. Time to sit specially during weekend and summer time is long. But time to table is always long no matter which season and day of the week you go there, which is inconvenient. Young staff some times careless! But good beer????

O'Neil

Troll's is decent, basic food served with a warm, homey semi-retro 70's-ish diner kind of vibe. Staff are friendly and unpretentious. The fish n chips my wife had the other day was sub-par tho, and were not crispy or even crunchy, but were a bit on the soggy side and not at all appetizing. Rustic cut fries w skin on were good though. I had the fish pie, which was good solid basic fuel, but was not all that tasty. It wasn't bad (if you like fish), just kind of blah and uninteresting. Service was a bit slow, but then again everyone is shorthanded these days, so no deduct for that. Views from the north windows are excellent, definitely (see attached pic). This was our 2nd trip to Troll's, I think I had a beef dip or a burger the other time and remember it being better. So go try them out, but skip the fish pie and fish n chips.

samuel mazzoli

After a fun visit to Whytecliff Park, we headed to nearby Horseshoe Bay to grab some lunch and wound up at Troll’s. It’s hard to miss this popular eatery as it’s located right on the corner of Bay Street and Royal Avenue. We were actually thinking of grabbing a light lunch so we ordered the Troll’s Chowder ($12 for the entrée size) and the Cod and Chips ($17 for 2 pieces + additional $6 for 2 pieces of fried oysters). Much to our surprise, when the food arrived at our table, we were taken aback by how large the soup and fish pieces were. The picture really doesn’t do it justice as it’s difficult to comprehend how huge the bowl of soup was. Not only was the bowl of chowder huge, it was chunky and chock full of things like baby clams and double-smoked bacon. You can get this as either white or red chowder and we picked Manhattan which turned out very creamy and not overly tomatoey. The batter on the cod and oysters was light and crisp which kept kept everything inside nice and juicy. They say that their fish and chips is “famous” and I won’t disagree with them. Underneath the generous portions of seafood, you’ve got a bed of addictive fries with a light crispness on the outside. Is this place a bit of a tourist trap? Yes – but there’s a reason why they’ve been so successful for so many years… the food is good and the portion sizes will keep your belly full.

Had lunch here while waiting for ferry. Ordered haddock and chips and chicken fingers. Chicken was dry and overcooked. Haddock tasted more like cod and was chewy. I've been to this restaurant 2 times in the past 4 years. The first time round, my experience was okay enough to make me want to dine here once more but not extraordinary to make me come here all the time. The second time however, we were completely disappointed. We ordered the calamari as the appetizer. It was DRY and with the slightest touch of the fork, it would fall apart! It didn't taste fresh at all. Then we had the oyster burger and the grilled salmon. Both dishes were okay but the yam (?) that came with the salmon were burnt on the outside. And don't get me started on the fries! They tasted like plastic!!! Absolutely disgusting. Our table didn't have any ketchup and from what I saw, the people on other tables were constantly getting up to swap their ketchup bottle with the next table hoping this time the bottle won't be empty. The outdoor sitting is extremely clustered with very little leg room and room to move. I will never be coming back here. The 2 stars is for the service we received and the main course.

Troll's has a great location in Horseshoe Bay. There is quite a bit of street parking and a parking lot is located on Bay St before you turn onto Nelson. I was given a table outside and the view of the park, ferries and the bay is beautiful. The fish and chips with a little malt vinegar tasted very good, no complaints on the food. But, I think the most credit at Troll's goes to their customer service and location. Definitely worth planning a meal time there if you are going on a ferry trip or driving to or from Squamish / Whistler.

Dominique Hall

I think the atmosphere in this restaurant. The views by the windows are excellent. It's also pretty cool that Bates Motel filmed scenes here. The burger was very delicious and juicy. The fish and chips in my opinion are on the salty side. The batter on the fish could do with a little less salt. Overall this is a great place bring friends visiting Vancouver or for a family dinner.

The place is nice. Has a great view of the mountains and the water.. the staff is good but they're not always paying attention to you. They definitely didn't understand the concept of "a good amount of salt" haha. Food was okay. Fries were great. Wifi veeeery slow. And it was pretty expensive.

Harvey Zhao

Service is excellent! The food is sometimes good sometimes bad. I'd recommend fish & chips and a avoid the calm chowder soup. Pricing is okay. They have a nice seating area with great view that overlooks the bc ferry dock.

Mortley Lee

Was there for breakfast before boarding the ferry...many selections on the menu..had the basic eggs and bacon and hashbrowns...not a fan of deep fried potato chunks...service was good...

Brittany Threadgill

We arrived just before closing, but were treated as wanted guests - the food was delicious and the service was great - will definitely go back. The BC ferries though are BAD and should be reorganized as part of the highway system a 3 he. 45 min. Wait is UNACCEPTABLE!

Great go-to place for beer battered fish and chips. Family run restaurant with an outdoor patio and takeout window. I had the cod sandwich which was delicious and extremely satisfying. Batter was crunchy while fish was fresh and moist. Pickles added a nice zest to the combo. Great mouth feel with a soft buttery bun. My companion tried their deep fried fish and house salad for the first time: He said it was the best fried fish he's ever had. We shared chips which were perfectly cooked - crunchy on the outside and slightly meaty on the inside. Servers were very attentive. They brought water right away which was great 'cause we were thirsty. I highly recommend Troll's.

Dwight D

The worst kind of tourist trap. Avoid this place its a cancer. First the food is overprices the tasteless over cooked batter gives way to under cooked cod. The staff is rude and incompetent. The only thing they have going for them is the location. What a waste of space. They have no business being in the restaurant business.

Jesen Lal

Food is just ok.. Fish is very greasy, fries under cooked.. Being a maritimer I had higher hopes. Service was good.

LovLam

Was good. Pretty busy place before my ferry ride.

Jen Innes

Got fish and chips here. 35 min wait, soggy fries, batter fall apart.....I thought this place is suppose to be "famous" for their fish and chips. The only saving grace is that the view is exceptional.

John K

The fish and chips were incredible, and the cheesecake was out of this world.

Robin Bath

I ordered a take out blue cheese burger. The burger was an over cooked frozen patty of poor quality. The fries had been reheated-half were fresh and half were recooked (much more well done). Overall very disappointing. I won’t order there again

Candy and Steven Metcalfe

First time in Horseshoe bay for me, I stopped by this place. The restaurant was crowded, but both my dishes arrived really fast and the staff girl to whom I asked a recommendation was very kind . Both the clam chowder and the grilled salmon were pretty simple but well cooked plates. The bill (pop included), was around 28$

Ion Teslaru

The servers were and always have been pretty darn good for the last 30 some years always smiling and prompt to a person needs. I always get the soup as it was a favorite for years, but this last time both kinds were corn starch laden do know they will get it right for next time there good at it

Steve McEneany

They always have good food when I’ve been there, family friendly and great to wait for the ferry at. We went there for a birthday party and they let us stay an hour later after they closed, they were all very cheerful and friendly and super helpful as we did. They are so sweet and really care about their customers! 10/10 ❤️

Trolls: THE BEST FISH AND CHIPS AND VINEGAR IN THE WORLD! Also, it was my first "job job" to work as a cashier and then hostess and waitress on the Saturday morning breakfast shift when I was 15 years old. Gary was a great boss. So was Jason. Jason introduced me to "Les Miserables" and always made sure that I had a safe ride home after work, when I was at closing, since I lived about 35 minutes away walking by WhyteCliff point. Over Christmas I took my family to eat at Trolls as a way of helping my children grow some respect for their ANGLO-SAXON ancestry. Nothing beats Trolls fish and chips... and the local beer they serve is also pretty fantastic. All in all -- the world is simply a better place in the world because of Trolls. Jason, Ab and Joey -- I was so sorry to hear about your parent's loss. I am truly sorry for what that must be like, to lose them both so quickly. I hope you are all doing well. God Bless your family and thank you for giving me my first job.

Beverley Derby

We headed there after a long day of kayaking and it was wonderful. There is number of sears in their patio and they all have shades. There was a bit of wait but its understandable given it was Sunday afternoon. We had two appetizer, cod taco and poutin and both were great specially the taco. I had the beef dip which was very good. The dip was nice and creamy which was nice. Seafood clubhouse was also great and good size. We also had the chicken sandwich which was pretty tasty. Overall the food was good and service was great too. Parking can be an issue as it is limited. Overall we had great experience and would go back.

Roger E

Great service, tasty breakfast!

Lorna Stevens

Food was terrible I ordered 2 pieces of fish and chips and got 1 piece of fish. Fish was too soggy for me. At least they sent some condiments to make it taste better. I will

Will Chen

Great service, friendly staff and amazing food. 5/5 would recommend.

Janet Robertson

Never disappoints. Benny Heaven..

Matthew Kroon

I would love to add a review-unfortunately you have to be open at the time you say you’re open so that people can come in and get breakfast. You say you are open at eight am and I was there till 8.10– decided to leave —-your loss my gain. How can you get a negative review when you are the only game in town. Definitely time for some competition.

Carole Carlton

This is a very busy diner in horseshoe Bay! Good service, good food. Great for families coming from the beach. Also a popular filming location so keep an eye out for familiar things from TV shows.

Jason Lee

Great lunch here. Fast service, excellent food.

alex goldkind

James D was our server today, and he was absolutely fantastic! Food was good, and service quick! Thank you James!

Hesam Navidi

The cod burger is excellent. The kids Mac and cheese is actually made with cheese and not the boxed stuff. The kids hotdogs are jumbo sized, much to my son's delight. The linguini is in more of a tomato sauce than what comes to mind when you see "cream sauce" and it totally over powers the delicate taste of the scallops. Over all a very nice family restaurant.

Barry Tranquada

Visited this location while waiting for the ferry. It is centrally located and not too far from the terminal so it is great choice for accessibility. The food however, was disappointing. I ordered the fish and chips and the deep fried prawns and both were not up to par. The fish was hard and tasteless and the prawns were soggy as though they were not cooked properly. It's disappointing because Trolls used to be known for its high quality items but this time around I was left feeling like I should have went somewhere else.

elysia robinson

I remember when Trolls was the toast of Horseshoe Bay. Now it's standards have dropped so low it's overshadowed by all the other eateries in the area. If you want fish n chips, go to C Lovers around the corner. If you want anything else, go to Olive and Anchor next door. I recently ate there and ordered the halibut and chips. The fish portion was tiny on a plateful of fries. For $21 the fish portion should be more than the maybe 3 oz portion I was served. When I pointed it out and asked for a different piece, they brought a second piece for me and then charged me for the 2 portion meal. My friends soup was also served cold. My beer at least was nice and cold, but for beer I would hit up the pub down the street. All in all I would say just eat elsewhere.

Beautiful sunny afternoon enjoying fish and chips with a local brew. Great atmosphere, view of the bay and staff were great????

Loved it! Will be back for sure, our server was very helpful allowing us to relocate to another patio table which free’d up right after we ordered. The blue cheese burger was the best I’ve had in years, and the cod and chips (wish I’d taken a photo) was well battered and perfectly crispy moist and tasty. Prices are very reasonable, great setting to spend a few hours on an afternoon. May do this more often throughout summer!

T V

I had the Portobello mushroom burger (doing the whole flexitarian eating thing) and it was very good. Extra napkins needed but good. Service was pleasant and attentive. Better than I expected for a touristy spot. Prices were also reasonable.

Paul Zdebiak

Had breakfast there with a small group. Service was friendly and food was good as expected and portions were also very good. Views were also nice as it's by the water. Great location for a walk after a meal.

jay yuen

Good fish and chips (what they are known for apparently) and the chicken wrap was delish! Decently priced, but the view on the patio makes it a great value. Friendly, welcoming staff. Probably best to go during the week as the ferry lets off very close by as you can see in the pictures. Also, happy hour....

Tori Lhug

The food was really good! Great portion size, hot, fresh etc. We ate out on the sunny back patio and the service was a touch slow, but probably because it's a new set up in the current situation.

toffy concepcion

Service was good. Food came quick. Place is pretty decent looking. The pieces of fish were big. Breading to me was too thick and pretty heavy. Cutting the pieces caused everything to completely seperate.

Mhmd Ghaith

The servings are large. The food is decent. We had a large family of noisy kids next to us, which took away some of our enjoyment. It seems to be a popular place - it was still full an hour before closing. Right on waterfront of Horseshoe Bay, so a nice view.

Sisca Gunawan

Horseshoe Bay is one of the towns that provides a ferry service. The Troll Restaurant sits right in front of it all! Lunch time was packed with people. With the fascinating history of how this restaurant came about, We had to wait 15 minutes for a table! Everyone wants to try their seafood chowder and fish and chips! The price is also high for the area. I find the fish too oily though. The decore of the restaurant is something to read about !

blaine walter

Another legend not in the making but success for many years. Enjoy the fish and chips their specialty. And beer his great with fish.

Moe Lal

Fish batter was undercooked, wait staff was rude, and not attentive. Noted several staff just standing around or on their phones while I waited for a refill on my coffee. The servers uniform and the bathroom were not clean. I've been many times in the past and this was not up to what I've previously experienced.

R Watson

Popped in for some take out before our ferry. Burgers are excellent and the spring salad was massive and tasty. Will return for sure!!

Afshin Asli

I work in the area, and eat in HS Bay frequently. My mom was good friends with Joe and Dorothy Troll, and I've been eating at Trolls since the 70's.. WITH THAT BEING SAID: Gary and Carol have no business being in the restaurant business. Trolls HS Bay, is consistently bad. under-cooked, frozen fish. Grouchy rude staff, over priced food. Thanks; But C-Lovers always get my business when I want good fish & chips. DO NOT EAT HERE.

Heather Alter-McGrath

My wife and I had a great afternoon at this Horseshoe Bay landmark. Good food. Very nice young woman who waited on us. I asked about the cedar canoe hanging from the ceiling but no one knew its origin. It was obviously carved by a native carver on the west coast. Anyway must visit if one goes to Horseshoe Bay.

RA H

Delicious, large portioned fish and chips. Great views of the harbour and surrounds. A proud family business. Very well established-- seems like it's been there forever. Hungry just thinking about it!

aya

Excellent food and friendly Waite staff. Fish and chips were very good

Brad Yates

Average at best, hashbrowns tasted like they where stored in a breakfast steamer, breakfast sausages where over spiced, plus no such thing as basted eggs here, sunny up, easy over or scrambled.

Michael Munro

Troll's used to be good, about 15 years ago. Now, the fish is overcooked, the chowder a bit bland, and the place is run by teenagers (although our server was nice). Go to C-Lovers for better fish and chips.

Vikki Rourke

Service & food are good. But staff are usually to busy talking to each other to check the restaurant for cleanliness. Always used/discarded napkins, scraps of food plus empty/full creamers on the floor and bench seating. A few of the staff (experienced & new) when leaning will still leave them (the above) without picking up.

Brings back memories dining in at Trolls on Sunday! Nothing has changed one bit. Food still taste great, huge portions and still the same atmosphere. Food: I ordered 1 cod with 2 oysters and salad. It was delicious! However, like anything deep fried, I suggest you eat it right away. Restaurant: The floor was a bit sticky and there were food bits on the ground, but it does goes hand in hand with a family friendly restaurant. This place is great for dine in, take out and "I'm starving and my ferry is about to board!".

Jeff P

Great food. Friendly service. Good people watching. Easy walk to ferry dock.

Kevin Head

Pretty good fish and chips. For the price you get a generous portion. It's like the white spot of seafood. I would give it a strong OK.

Spencer Van Raamsdonk

Great place to grab a bite to eat. Staff was super friendly and the food was delicious. We had the best Calamari we've ever had and the halibut was perfect!

Rolf Gobran

Good crab cake (14.5$) , and salad portion (10$) was really big. Friendly service, and beautiful view.

Kate O

Great place for food and relax. The best fish and chips in the area. Very busy place so you might want to get there sooner rather than later

Jeevan Jdali

The staff were friendly. Took about 5 minutes to get a waitress to come to the table. Seafood was warm and tasted good. Ordered a Pepsi and it tasted watered down, a bit like tap water, and really carbonated. Traded it for an iced tea instead and it was better (still had a slight tap water taste in it). I can see why the sodas are bottomless now. The fish and chips were crispy and the crab cakes were soft and tender (nicely plated and with real crab too!). The calamari was crispy and all of the plates were entirely filled with food. The restrooms are clean and have a nice look to them. Overall it was an okay experience.

Yuen Tso

Nice to go back as a customer, still great food and great service

Christine Graham

Greater at the door was very prejudice of us and was not nice at all. Did not wanna serve us. We ordered our food to go and when we got on the ferry their was large hair placed beside some short hairs seemed very deliberate. No evidence of course but all and all was a horrible experience. General manager witnessed and was made aware after words of the whole thing and did not seem bothered by the whole incident at all.

Frederic Dahm

Great location right by the water and with a nice window view can’t be wrong. Food is good but batter on fish was way to thick and super greasy. Prices are reasonable for what you get plus bottomless pop. Servers are okay, a few times we’ve been here they always get the order wrong or forget something...

Colin Robertson

Very fast service, lots of tables, and very well cooked and tasting food. Everyone loved the cod and halibut. Seafood linguini was also top notch. Friendly and polite staff.

K Q

This is a place you've got to go to just to admire the location and some of the sea side sights. As far as the food goes, I've been here a few times and in each instance, I wasn't impressed with the food quality. Most of the servers are young and lack the attentiveness required to keep the clients at ease with their food requests. If you're just wanting to have something on the run, there may be wait times depending on the time of the year, but the setting is somewhat beautiful! Overall, try it once at least...

Pretty good food and huge portions. Service was really good and the wait wasn’t too bad even with a big rush.

Caroline Everett

Was waiting in ferry, ordered a take out burger. Very busy restaurant, burger patty and fries was great, but the super dry burger bun destroyed the burger.

A H

The staff is very friendly but famous chips and fish have too much oil, the cocktails too less alcohol and chicken soup chicken only in traces... overall, the food and drinks could be much better!

Quick draw McGraw Aka Derek

Consistently good food and service. They will always do their best to get you to your ferry but don't ask for miracles

Charles Perillat

Great big diner in a very small town. Salmon and fries were delish. No complaints. Loved it

Neda Ghalili

Very good food while in Horseshoe Bay. Been here three times and have loved it each time. Only issue is that service can be delay because of how busy they are.

MT

Has good bathrooms, and there poutine is very hefty and good texture. There coffee is also super strong, only thing is the amount of seating they have, they just have to improve on that, that's it. 4 out of 5 stars, tell a friend

Dan Nan

The service was good, our server was very smiley and attentive, even though they were very busy, but the food was hit and miss. The first order of fries were under done but to be fair they replaced them super quick with a much improved version. I had two bits of fish, one was good but the other was over done. So it seems they have a quality control problem. The head chef needs to start sampling and testing what's going out there.

Gareth Evans

Quite good restaurant in Horseshoe Bay which mostly serves fish and chips. There are 4 different fish available: cod, salmon, haddock and halibut. This place also serves salads, soups, burgers. From the restaurant there is a nice view to the bay and the mountains.

Greta James

Love going to the Troll's, fish and chips is our 1st choice and theirs is just great, Horshoe bay makes you feel at ease, don't forget to take a drive to Whitecliff park ????????????

codie hirata

Friendly staff, good food, great view. Try fish & chips here!

Sally Felkai

Very tasty fish and chips worth the drive out from Burnaby to get it

David Peterson

Best place to go for a bite to eat if in Horseshoe Bay, especially if you miss a ferry! LOVE the fish and chips! Their burgers are pretty great too.

Chu Jones

The best fish n chips ever!

Ryan Mackereth

Get fish&chips. Brit style food. Crab cakes were cool in centre. Seafood over cooked. Lil' disappointed.

C- Dawg

food and service both great!

Duke D

Im working away from home, so ive been trying to find a spot that actually has fresh fish (to eat). This ended up being a wonderful find. My meal was amazing, and service great! I had fish and chips (Halibut option). It honestly was very very good. There was so much flavour i didnt even use my tartare sauce. The batter was very thin, so it was all fish, not 75% batter like many places. Great location too across from a marina. If im back out this way, ill absolutely be back.

Roxy

Take Out window review: Burned food that took awhile... barely any fish inside all that burned shell Missed my bus with a wailing hungry kid, was going to grab food asap and head out...for this burned batter stuff? Seriously? This is just awful looking. ???? How many times did you overcook it and has oil even been changed lately? Talk about unhealthy and waste of money. Didn't even get napkins.... which you need here if you want to pick it apart. McDonald's does a better job cooking food and it's cheaper. Can't go back and ask for anything else/fresh because I'll miss the next bus by giving up my spot in line. Nice. ????.

Ester Yang

Delicious food. Great place for a quick visit. Poor customer service after COVID-19. They charge money for masks and noone wear them inside.

bf di

I had breakfast here before heading out on the ferry. The waitress was very attentive, the food was tasty, and I left feeling full! It had a cozy vibe and they also had a $12 breakfast special. This was my first time dining here and I would certainly go back!

Ahevaz Dharamsi

Excellent meal, great service, good ambience.

Amanjit P

Had a great fish n chips lunch here. Great service.

Gordon Hollingsworth

Visited to have some of their famous fish and chips. Great place. Didn't have to wait long even though it was busy being Canada Day when we visited. I recommend Troll's for a quick bite to eat and a great dining experience.

Fila Kotekova

Best fish and chips everrr, the portions are huge, so make sure to order two pieces only if you're super hungry

Alena Hill

Stop by Horseshoe Bay for some grub. Wandered around & found this restaurant, great view to watch the ferry. Nice place, staff were friendly, we came early at 11am on a Friday morning. By noon, thenplace was packed. We had the 2 piece Haddock fish & chips... big pieces of fish, nicely done. My friend had the crab cakes. We also ordered the shrimp & bacon club sandwich with a salad. The sandwich was stack high, shrimp was fresh... no fishy smell to it. Nicely done again. All in all, a nice meal.

Bryan Caldwell

I usually come here for a meal if I had to wait in the ferry line-up. The place offers a change from the usual menu offered on the boats. Service is usually good here, and particularly so when i had breakfast.

KC Johnson

I'd give this restaurant a 4/5 if I wasn't treated like in prison by the short Caucasian waitress who was extremely rude and mean to us and tables next to ours. Because food was great and the manager was very nice and understanding when I mentioned to her how her employee treated us and other customers. I witnessed a woman with her little daughter leave the restaurant without eating because of the treatment they got by the mentioned waitress. Great restaurant was ruined by bad waitress and service.

Paul Fortin

The service was ok. But the food was terrible. We ordered calamari to start- $14 and we got only a small handful. The poutine had mayb 5 penny size pieces of cheese on it... and the gravey tasted like it was from a pouch. The fish part of the fish Tacos were good... but then they filled it up with unseasoned coleslaw, a whole bunch of salsa from a bottle and some sauce. At one point, our waitress was leaning over another table for a good 10 mins and had her bum in the in the air- in our face. So weird!! Definitely will NOT be coming back!

Ms. Nicole

I went there last February so first I ordered a hot water. The staff served it. She was very kind to us. When we received the menu. She recommended popular food. So we ordered fish and chips and hamburger. I forget the food but the taste was very good i think. The price was a little expensive I thought. But the location and service was very good so it's okay.

I really enjoyed this place. It is right cross the ocean beach. It has very warm environment and dishes are really delicious. Restaurant atmosphere is very cool and staff are friendly. If you are not seafood fan there’s plenty of other options to enjoy. Beef lasagna is very popular so they couldn’t offer to us and we missed to taste. ???????? They have very good fish and chips. I strongly recommend Salmon and chips over Cod and chips although the portion is a little smaller. ???????? Crispy chicken burger also very tasty and it is chilly ???????? and Texan burger also very good They only have Pepsi and do not offer Coke for me it was a downside Free 2h parking available cross the street. Overall food is decent. Batter of the Fish is on the oilier side and can feel a bit heavy but the fish itself tasted good. Not the best fish and chips I’ve had but is still a good spot to bring family and kids. (They have colouring pages for the little ones which is a nice addition.)

Me Bar

Excellent service, good food.

Love this Horseshoe Bay institution. Classic diner. I love to site in the booth and eat pancakes while waiting for the ferry. Friendly staff and decent prices for somewhere so close to Vancouver and with not much other options. Would recommend especially on rainy day.

Great halibut and chips! If you're on the west coast, you've got to eat halibut. Super view from patio onto the bay.

Good food and nice atmosphere

Fantastic location across from the marina, nice views out the windows. Large patio out back but no views from back there. Food was good, arrived hot to the table. Service was good and staff followed safety precautions. Tables were spaced for Covid 19 rules.

Rude Rude Rude Rude staff. We were 5 adults and starving. We did not have proper lunch and arrived around 4 pm on Monday Feb12. After giving our oder we wait 15 min more. I Politly asked a shorter waitress to know when our food would be ready? She replied “ another 15 min “ I returned to my table and 2 min later a tall blonde waitress came and told us that “ here is not Mac Donald and it would take 30 min to bring your food”. We alll So embarrassed and felt humiliated Left the restaurant The blond lady was victoriously reporting to the kitchen staff about her customer service skills and they were all happy that we were leaving We gone to next door restaurant We have never ever been treated in this manner before Rude Rude Rude Rude Rude Rude Rude

My family has come here for fish and chips for a long time and it's still among the best in the city. However for the first time I tried the fish tacos appetizer and not only was it big it was really tasty and I will definitely be getting it again.

Hamish (Ty) MacFayden

Troll’s has definitely gone downhill from what it used to be. We ate from the takeout window and they charged us for an extra order of chicken strips that we didn’t ask for and didn’t take and then didn’t refund us. The coleslaw that came with the fish and chips was literally 8 pieces of cabbage and the fish and fries tasted like the oil in the fryer desperately needed a change. We only ate here because Olive & Anchor was closed as the last experience we had at Trolls was not great either. Disappointing as I always used to look forward to fish and chips from Trolls.

Damian Kędzior

Fish and chips and clam chowder were on point. Friendly staff. Clean place.

Graeme

Food not that great suprisingly. We orderd from the take out window. Not sure what kind of fish and chips people eat when they say this is the best. It's so oily I didn't listen to some reviews, my fault. I couldnt eat it. The fries and fish is soaked in oil the fish dough is just not good the fries were crispy but without salt. Wondering how difficult is it to make good tasting fish and chips in so many years since the restaurant is opened for so long. I had also cod burger what tasted pretty good It had the same oily fish but it got lost between the bun and veggies. The bun was very good.

C Mueller

Great food, kids loved it and reasonably priced well maintained and friendly staff, great first experience

Shingo S. Ishida

Had lunch here for the very first time and it was very good. It was a light lunch so shared a fish plate with a Manhattan clam chowder which you don’t find very often. Fish was fresh and coated with just a light batter. Soup was very good as well. Highly recommend.

Eric Jeffs

The food is great and the portions are big. Quick and friendly service. Nice location. Get patio seating when the weather is nice in the spring and summer.

Susie N

Went to Trolls while waiting for ferry for a better breakfast and my buddy had the Fisherman's breakfast with 3 eggs, pan fried potatoes.bacon, sausages, and 4 pieces of French toast with coffee. I had the regular breakfast with 2 eggs, bacon, potatoes sourdough toast and coffee. Everything was great tasting and staff was very friendly and accommodating. Boarded our ferry to Sechelt and home again same day.

Tara Bolton

Overpriced and dirty. The food was great but the clenliness just killed it for us. For what they charge and the expectations of the area this was a disappointment.

Gre6 Rose

If I could give zero stars i would. They gave my girlfriend a burger that tasted and smelled like fish. Then we asked for a new one and were told kitchen is closing and weren't able to get the burger. Then they didn't even apologize or anything to make us feel like they were remorseful. Absolutely horrible staff and the way it was handled. They made us feel guilty about there cross contamination with the burger. If she had a fish allergy, she would've been severely ill or dead.
