This Fish Shop corresponds to the category of Japanese restaurant.
Good, quick Japanese food. Good prices and always fresh. Worth the visit!
I never been here before but I ordered a sushi tray delivered to me today. It was great that I was able to build my own tray and only pick what I want. The waiting time was reasonable and food were packed nicely. Sushi are good, a bit too much vinegar in the rice I think. I would come to the store one day for groceries.
Your one stop shop for all things sushi, sushi rolls and sushi groceries. Ramen, rice, karage, they got it all!
Excellent staff, great food, and a fine selection of Japanese groceries. They even have ginger ice cream.
Locally owned and family run store. Good selection of authentic Japanese grocery products.
I think they have changed owners again. Sushi was flames. Can’t wait to try their hot dishes.
Very bad service. Arrogant and rude employees. Never come back.
Very limited grocery items with a decent freezer section that included nato. Staff were incredibly wonderful. Ready made food (tako) was very good.
Great value for money. Sakura is very informal; you order at the counter, pay in advance, and then they start preparing your food in an open kitchen. When it's ready, someone will bring it to your table. I eat here often.
My friends and I love to watch cooking shows. We decided to try and make sushi rolls ourselves. We stopped in at Sakura Sushi Bar and were given great tips as first timers.
Great place to pick up excellent and fresh sushi takeout and a few other simple dishes. Also a great place to pick up Japanese cooking ingredients if you prefer to DIY.
Very tasty sushi. My favorite is the tempura yam, which had 6 pieces instead of the usual 5. A cute little Japanase grocery and sushi place. Staff are pleasant to talk to and are very nice..
Super friendly folks work here. Amazing sushi and gyoza. I'll be trying their other dishes soon .
A local jem in downtown Victoria
Good quality, traditional vibe and good price! I go there every day for lunch:) and the staff are always friendly. Thank you Sakura
Great selection and polite staff.
Very nice staff and atmospher. Great Udon / prices
Very fresh, tasty, authentic Japanese food and friendly staff:)
Excellent little lunch place for good sushi.
Quality products and fair pricing.
They close too early
(Translated) Delicious clerk atmosphere is the best! (Original) 美味しく店員の雰囲気が最高です!
Bad dried up sushi. Nothing authentic about this hole.
Great place to have lunch. Feels like a nice kombini with fresh hot food. It's like Genki restaurant by the Nikkei center in Burnaby. Feels like home.
Friendly staff, soft rice, funny signs, great sushi and other takeout items. Definitely exceeds all of my expectations, every time.
Have had food poisoning from this location as other people I work with have had related issues.
Quality, authentic Japanese sushi in addition to some creative rolls. Used to regularly stopped by here when I worked around the corner and always enjoyed the food... but I just can't get past the prices. Alot of their rolls and nigiri prices are often higher than the high-quality sit down restaurants like Nubo or Sen. I fail to understand why I have to pay such a premium for sushi that is sitting in a cold case. If their prices were more in line with Fujiya I'd be there every day.
This is one of the best sushi places in town. Their sushi never disappoints me!! I haven't anything other then sushi from their menu but I'm a regular here for their sushi because it's so amazing!
Friendly and helpful staff!
Awesome staff, amazing food
Awesome place for delicious Japanese food.
lovely sushi. I highly recommend it ????
Great little place that offers fresh made sushi, rice bowls and bento boxes. I've had their ramen, it was flavourful with excellent noodles. Their new new curry bowl items are really tasty and generously portioned. The Karaage Don is also an excellent lunch option. They're definitely under new management - lots of new faces and a much improved customer service experience. They also have a new expanded menu with more variations of each type of dish. Sakura has solidified it's place in my lunchtime rounds.
Authentic Japanese cuisine. Good selection with specials available. Not just delicious sushi but hot dishes offered too.
Very good place to have sushi. Service is very attentive and they are happy to accommodate your wishes. It's a simple place but very clean and the quality of sushi and complexity are rather high. Prices are moderate. The place contains the restaurant and a small store.
I like Japanese curry and this place has the cubes to prepare your own. Decent selection on frozen fish, condiments and rice. They had premade maki roll on offer with other simple side dishes available. Iots of Japanese confectionery if you are looki g for your sugar fix.
Lots of imported Japanese food in freezers and on shelves. My favorite is the spicy tuna roll because they make it with lettuce instead of cucumber or avocado. There hot food was not very good tho..
I eat here at least once a week. Delicious selection to-go and made in house options. The staff and very kind, and there's always a Studio Ghibli movie playing!
Very fresh and tasty. Good prices too. ????????????
Food was pretty mediocre and pricey. My daughter is a pretty big sushi fan and she didn't even eat half of hers. Not somewhere I'd go back to.
Eaten here for a looong time. Lovely, polite staff. Yummo food! Sushi is fresh and tasty.
Best Katsudon in Victoria! Also stocks small pieces of Japanese grocery, which are helpful if you're into that!
How cheap do you gotta be to put lettuce in the rolls!?! And the rice was dried out and hard. Would rather have gas station sushi.
Great selection of sushi and drinks would recommend
Friendly, tasty and compatible with my many food sensitivities
Good source for Japanese groceries as well as a quick bite.
Great for a quick bite or a party platter to go.
Tasty deli-style Japanese store/restaurant.
Friendly staff! Sushi is delicious!
I had lunch at Sakura today and it was outstanding we started with Tempura Shrimp it was incredible a great start we had half a dozen different Sushis all delicious, pork dumplings and fried chicken was amazing. Chef Morgan and staff do a great job we were very happy with our experience at Sakura.
Big fan of curry here. Good sushi too. A bit pricy but worth it.
Made a special order of temari sushi for a holiday party. The tray was gorgeous, fresh and they even gave me 5 extra pieces for free. Highly recommended.
Excellent selection of Japanese groceries - ramen, soba, konbu, sushi nor and rice, inari pouches, natto, fish, and more - and sushi - brown and white rice rolls, tempura, onigiri, nigiri, edamame, and more, with several vegan/vegetarian safe options, mostly in brown rice.
Great sushi! Awesome staff and cool atmosphere.
Sort of authentic but also expensive Japanese food. They also have some Japanese groceries which is convenient in downtown. Most of the times the stuffs are friendly and helpful, however my boyfriend who is caucasian had a bad experience where he was ignored for 15 mins and had to go to the kitchen couter to order (the restaurant was empty and the sign said customers will be helped at the tables). He was trying to get several Onigiris while they were making some so he pointed at the Onigiris as his order. After a long time he was served salmon rolls and he said the rolls are not what he wanted but the stuffs said he was wrong and laughed at him. I feel that this is quite unacceptable as a customer experience. It seems that the place isn't too friendly to people who aren't very familiar with the culture.
Fresh sushi daily and very friendly staff! The deals are great as well.
We went out of our way to stop by on our trip back to Vic and were HUGELY disappointed on every level with the new owners, or whatever is going on there - yuck! My former Japanese student brought me here back in 2014. When we arrived we brushed by a ' guy' yelling on the phone and smoking outside the door almost blocking us from getting in. Upon waiting for our food to be prepared, we realized that THIS gentlemen was the sushi chef!! :( .... all of us were jaw dropped... (he looks like a drugged out Seth Rogan). We stayed open minded about a caucasian sushi chef but in the end, big fail. So he messed up and put eggs on our sushi, crammed everything into one and there some some weird ketchup sauce (we asked not have the roe). they also forgot our butter tarts we paid for when buying sushi, they looked cute as they were selling them by the counter. When we went back the lady said she didn't forget them and we were mistaken, she looked around the desk then walked to the back for 10 mins while we stood there confused thinking she was getting more, but just ignored us. The older lady behind the counter we thought would help but seemed extremely cold as well and didn't look at us. VERY DIFFERENT than the old sakura. The 'greasy white sushi guy" said no one told him about NO eggs, and that if I didn't like the sushi I didn't need to eat it. We just shrugged our shoulders and left, what else could we do it felt like we were being bullied by all 3 of them. A customer who was inside when this happen came out after in the parking lot and said she only goes there to get miso soup to make at home, the new owners aren't very nice at all and the food has gone down hill. Place is gross and not what is used to be, saddened by that for the community.
Good place to get a quick lunch or snack, good prices for the take out sushi. Wish the grocery selection was a bit bigger.
I come here often for take-out sushi and they usually have that unique grocery item I need for my Japanese recipe. I like the friendly service, convenient location and calm atmosphere here. I hope they grow to hold more grocery and household items.
Beautiful make traditional Japanese sushi
The beef Udon is amazing. I've been living a block away from this place and my only wish was to have tried it sooner .
Staff is always super friendly when entering. And always ready to server :) great team you have.
Incredibly friendly.
Good mix of quick to pick up food with Japanese food goods.
Great food!
Great place to pick up essentials for Japanese cuisine.
Food was delicious, fish was very fresh, staff was welcoming and fast!!
Fantastic sushi, cozy place, and the little goods for sale on the back are great!
The hidden gem.
Picked up pre-made sushi from their cooler back in the summer. The rice was mushy and absolutely vile tasting. It was surprising to me because this was my 5th time back eating the same product. I took two bites, something was definitely off and I decided to mention it to the lady at the till. I asked if she could have their cooks make a fresh one instead. I also mentioned that they should check if their cooler was cold enough. She went to the back to speak with the owner of the restaurant. The owner was so loud complaining about how there's no way he would refund me money. I could hear him while sitting just a few meters away. I didn't expect money back but I also didn't expect rotten food. The owner needs to accept criticism and not make a scene in front of his customers. Other people were commenting on his attitude and the food as well. I feel bad for the rest of the staff who has to deal with that unprofessional owner. Edit: I looked at the VIHA website and they had past violations for improper cooling. I guess that explains it.
You have a lot of choices for sushi in Victoria. Don't choose this one. Sushi rice was overcooked and gelatinous. One of my rolls was even a bit slimy, with strings of goo connecting the roll to the plate when I picked it up. Toro sashimi was served almost warm and the texture was off, making it seem like it was poor quality or poorly prepared.
Always good and the ladies are always friendly
Excellent food. The to go options are just perfect. Super tasty.
Had a selection of take out items that are prepared, always so good. And the folks there are very friendly.
Great curry, fried chicken, and gyoza!
Great place. You can get authentic ingredients if you like to make Japanese dishes at home, and the service counter has good food too!
I didnt argue with anyone. I replied to the owner who wasn't wearing a mask who asked me to wear a mask. . Hypocritically. As I walked out immediately after being told I would be refused service. We luckily as humans have rights and the human rights commissioner would disagree with your no mask no service rule. It's simply considered discrimination. I'd strongly advise there be some research into humans rights be for you follow the leader with being rude and kicking people out especially people who are exempt to the Mandate.
Great food grrat prices
I think that the owner is cool, logical, smart, and I appreciate their sense of humour. All of the staff here have been people who I could see myself being friends with. I have liked every one of them so far.
Cute little shop with delicious bento or the occasional hot meal if your there at the right time. Simple and clean decor; but the variety of Japanese groceries is truly a treat and one of my favorite shops in the city.
Great sushi, simple, incredibly tasty, pretty inexpensive, lightning fast service, Ghibli on the TV... I have a new favourite lunch spot. I might go to Sen Zushi for a full meal on a night out but Sakura is the only other place for sushi in town that I care about.
Dinner and grocery store in one! The food is nicely plated. The negi chicken I tried was perfectly fried. There were too much sauce, which made the food a tad salty.
asked if their food came from sustainable source, said they didn't know where it came from and would phone me back, still waiting. please let them know- sustainability, customer service, and honesty are good policies for any successful business.
Its ok but not impressed. I keep trying and it keeps falling short. Chewy seaweed. $15 but mostly rice. To answer the question of the owner below, I have had an assortment of your sushi rolls both from the case and ordered fresh, over the last couple months.
Delicious sushi rolls
Fair prices, they have ready made sushi in the fridge if you're in a rush as well as table service, they also have a great little Japanese grocery section!
New owners I think? Sushi was flames. Can’t wait to try their hot plates.
Over price !! I just saw the comment from owner. I know this is not Japan. Why is he so rude ?? I also noticed that when he got negative reviews he was so aggressive and harsh to customer who posted . He could have said Thank you first . Not good customer service skills .
I ordered a Fried chicken curry rice, it was different to the curry taste that I used eat, but it was delicious. They cooked it after I placed my order. The chicken was juice and rice quality very good, only the curry taste was not my favourite, but I think some people may love this style of curry, it's little sour and spicy, you should not mind to try it if you like Japanese curry, may be you will love it as well.
Perfect grab and go sushi. The spicy tuna rolls are delicious!
Got a couple of their pre-made rolls and rice balls. I think the rice was overcooked (too soft) and the price was not comparable to Fujiya. Groceries and hot food might be okay here, but for quick sushi downtown I would recommend getting take-out from a restaurant instead.
A great little family run business with very friendly service whether you are grabbing food on the run, dining in, or restocking grocery staples for home.
This place has very rude ownership who are extremely unaccommodating to their guests. Will never be going back here.
Always fresh! Always super friendly! They offer a brown rice option. Their brown rice veggie roll is my favorite. Their curries are also lovely!
The groceries were the best part and they're sadly limited
Super friendly staff, Great selection for Japanese cooking condiments. It is so convenient to have the market and specialized Japanese grocery store in core downtown Victoria. They got covered all the Japanese cooking staples and more. Their weekly rotation Onigiri specials are always fun too!
their sushi is really good
(Translated) The onigiri indicated Mentaiko flavor but it was Salmon inside, and rice itself was not for Onigiri (it was sour rice for sushi) Also the seaweed did n’t wrap around and rice ball broke in half… Would not recommend for Onigiri, although they have other locations just for that ???? It's not mentaiko, it can be split in half, and vinegared rice ... If you are a Japanese restaurant, please serve solid Japanese food! (Original) The onigiri indicated Mentaiko flavor but it was Salmon inside, and rice itself was not for Onigiri (it was sour rice for sushi) Also the seaweed didn’t wrap around and rice ball broke in half… Would not recommend for Onigiri, although they have other locations just for that ???? 明太子じゃないし、半分に割れるし酢飯、、、 日本料理店ならしっかりした和食を出してくれよ!
Good sauce, however rice was mushy and too sticky. Prices were also quite high for the quality of sushi. $8.5 for a spicy salmon roll.
Interesting location and decor... But the best sushi in town
Support Local Business Tour We bought some sushi take out and they were all tasty! we will visit again on our next Victoria trip Keep up the good work!
I've been going here for many years and love the fact that they are still trying to serve customers during the pandemic. Cudos to staff today who shut down an non mask wearing individual who tried to bully them. totally had their customers safety in mind. My kind of place.
Awesome taste but put too too much msg
Seemed inhospitable
