We were recommended this place by someone who used to go years ago and were warmly greeted by the employee when we arrived right at the opening time. We ordered the two piece halibut and chips and it was and was promptly fried and neatly wrapped. The employee was very friendly and asked if we needed any utensils, condiments, and if we wanted to split the portion into two dishes. The food itself was good, although the halibut could be a bit more moist. Would like to try the pickerel if we ever return. The customer service alone is enough reason to come back!

Fish and chips can really be hit and miss. We've had our share of cutting into battered fish and encountering tunnels, too much batter or too much batter deep fried at the wrong temperature so it's quite greasy with very little fish inside. Well, they get it right here. The haddock was lightly bartered, served with good fries and a creamy cole slaw. The condiments included tarter sauce, ketchup, vinegar and a malt vinegar. We'll be back. They also serve beer from Smithaven and Publican house.

Food was amazing. The waitress Karen was rude and rushed us. (We were the only ones there on Sunday for lunch. There was 8 plus 2 kids.). She tried to take my plate before I had even finished eating. When we told her how many there was of us she rolled her eyes and seemed annoyed she had to move tables to accommodate us. There was literally one other customer in the entire restaurant there was no need to rush us. We won't be back.

I am incredibly disappointed in not only the food, but the customer service here. We ordered family meals as an early celebration of my birthday, and found hair baked into the batter of the fish. When we called, they basically said prove it, and we had to bring it back in to the restaurant. An employee, Male, was incredibly rude, stated this never happens, and then proceeded to hand us 4 pieces of fish, and tell us to carry on. I am not a complainer at all, and I generally have no issues with food I order, but tonight was a disappointment all around.

This company has no idea how to treat customers. An employee was very rude and disrespectful towards myself and my bf. We were very poorly treated over the phone, twice. Called the owner to try and rectify the issue and no steps were taken. I get that they are busy but between bad service and a late delivery it's unacceptable. I waited an hour for my food was cold when it got to me finally. Not impressed and surely will not be going back. I recommend never eating here.

Just ordered tonight for the first time ever. When I was a teen living in PTBO my mom would pick up Fish from here once a year, which was pretty special. I had the regular fish and chips with a side of coleslaw and lots of malt vinegar. For the price? I cannot complain. Fish was hot. Crisp. Not greasy. Chips are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Guy behind the counter was pleasant and a woman who I assume may have been the owner was super nice. Everyone was wearing masks and quick. Highly recommend. They are an institution. Best deal it town!

First impression, this place is quite brilliant. The dinning area is nice and neat, service is fantastic and the complimentary bread once you seat down is just a brilliant gesture. Young guys in there working looked like they were having a great time. Little hole in the wall type of fish spot but the food was great. Got 2pc halibut and chips to go, got home and unwrapped the paper. It was fantastic. Don't be discouraged by the appearance of the place the food was awesome. Large portions. Best fish and chips. Anywhere. It broke my heart when they remodeled a few years ago- this place was unique decorated. So it's a bit more up to date and the fish is still perfect. Not every town has a local institution like this. We have to enjoy them before they're all Tim Hortons.

While the food is good, I'm sure, as it always has been ... there's a few BIG problems: First and foremost ... the cleanliness of the dining room, or lack thereof, gives me great pause as to what the cleanliness of the kitchen would be. I did note staff batter dipping fish with bare hands. Should gloves be in use? I took a few photos in the dining room ... judge for yourself. I visited the place several times 40 years ago as a child, and I don't know that the place has been cleaned much since, tbh. It certainly has been redecorated at all. Today was Good Friday. Yes, a VERY busy day for restaurants, and particularly so for Purvey's for a few reasons including fish being a traditional meal for the day. However, with 20 Skip The Dishes/Uber/Door Dash drivers lined up out one door, and about 60 customers lined up inside, out the door and down the street ... things quickly got out of control. While they continued to take MORE orders they had lost all control of the orders/customers they already had. Deliver drivers who had waited 30 - 60+ minutes were just walking out ... orders were being put up/called for drivers who had already left. One Skip The Dishes customer drove down LOOKING FOR her delivery driver, and God love her she said to the driver you leave and go back to work and I'll stay here and wait in line for my "delivery" order. Well before it reached this point the restaurant should have called a pause on all new orders.

Jeff Purvey's hasn't changed in the fifty years I've been going there. The menu still has all my favourites. All the rest is pretty much the same. Maybe a fresh coat of paint as needed. I'm glad as owners have changed, they saw no need to "improve" anything.

I'm not usually a huge fan of battered fish but this is great. The fish is crispy but not hard and not greasy. The fresh cut fries and coleslaw are also very good. Great place.

When I first walked in it was a great atmosphere. A little dated but comfy nonetheless. Our server came over, handed us menus and then went away. When she came back to take our order, I had asked (jokingly) if the clam strips came with bellies. She looked at me like I just told her off. Although it was busy, I expect a little manners and maybe some appreciation for the business we were giving them. She did not return to check it all of our food was OK or to refill our drinks. Horrible service. Not a smile on her mug. Having said that, the fish was excellent as well as the fries. I will not be going back.
