The fish was very good. The batter was thin but crispy and the meat was juicy and fishy too. The coleslaw salad dressing was delicious but the chips were fiasco. The potatoes used were of low quality without taste of potato and were fried too dry to attempt to make them crispy.

Simple menu done well, it's hard to find a decent fish and chips diner. Dirty Nellie's hit the spot for sure. Staff are professional, pleasant, and competent. One downside I found was there were a couple of tables that were in awkward areas by the counter. Seems a little hazardous if some day a glass slips off the high counter and strikes someone on the head. High stools are a more practical, safer option. Plus I don't want to be meandering around seated guests while I'm trying to pay. Will be returning. Check it out.

We ordered fish and chips from here for the first time and were overly impressed! Not only was the fish was cooked perfectly using a good amount of batter, but the chips, coleslaw, and tartar sauce were all delicious as well. We got take out for 4 people and the price was really reasonable. We especially like that the fish and chips come wrapped in paper for take out, so there's not much plastic or styrofoam waste!

Terrible service. Every time I go there, the place seems to be closed. This one time I finally manage to make it in there, I ask just for a portion of chips - and get told I have to make an order of fish with it (I know it's a fish and chip shop, however I should be able to buy any product being offered in store) it's all about the $$. The guy behind the counter looked at me when I asked for fries, and said "can't you read the sign?" Rude & unprofessional....Haultain Fish & Chips are amazing, and the service is fantastic!! As a Brit, I recommend them!

We moved to Cordova Bay in 2011 and discovered Naughty Nellie's Not Just Fish & Chips through Urban Spoon. We are SO glad we tried it. True to the review we read, it's a little kitsch inside, but the food is AMAZING. My husband is from England and takes his fish n' chips very seriously. He puts NNNJFC right up there with some of the best he's had back home. I hope they never sell the store, I would be devastated!!!!!!

My parents are humble folk who rarely eat out. When they do, they look for quality products and affordability. Naughty Nellie's fits the bill for them, and for me as well. I can't recall how many fun picnics we've had in the back yard over a serving of fresh fish and chips! Delicious and well-priced, we are fans for life. Our personal pick: 2-pieces of cod with hot fries, coleslaw and tartar sauce. It is enough to feed two people. Amazing!

the server is only nice to me when I am with my parents, the food was absolutely wonderful (best i've eaten in a very long time). However I have to wait for my parents who live in Alberta to come down before I can go back as the server was rude and unprofessional. She acted as though I was a teenager trying to scam her or something, and when I didn't tip her (she didn't deserve one), she was even more rude. Great food though, perhaps hire someone more professional and tolerant to serve food and I can spend more money here and give you a better rating.

And once I got the food home, I could not believe you don't get tarter sauce. You are telling me you have to ask for it. I just enjoyed the best fish and chips dinner I have ever had in my life, at Naughty Nellie's restaurant. I very rarely say this about anything, but the food was done flawlessly. The friendly host greeted my guest and I, then seated us as quickly as he could. It was my first time to Nellie's, so our wonderful server, explained items on the menu and checked with the kitchen, to make sure the salmon was caught wild. First we enjoyed some perfectly cooked prawns with zesty seafood sauce. Then, they served the incredibly tender halibut plate and the amazing sockeye salmon plate, with plenty of crispy delicious fries on the side. They also included a side of delicately shredded coleslaw and possibly the best tartar sauce on the planet. My guest and I exchanged one of our pieces of fish, to enjoy the halibut and salmon flavours together. There are also many other options on the menu, so I will be visiting often and they can probably satisfy everyone in your family. Thanks for the excellent experience guys.

This is the closest to British-style Fish & Chips I've had outside of Britain. Exceptional food and generous portions - especially the chips. This place has changed ownership several times in the past few years, but have retained their main cooks, so older reviews complaining about the service may no longer be relevant while older reviews praising the food will be. I've always found the service to be very friendly, however, and have never had a complaint. I agree they should probably ask if the customer wants ketchup or tartar sauce given that the Canadian version of the dish almost always includes it. The family packs do come with tartar sauce, just for the record. Have seen a couple of reviews showing photos of the ocean/harbour views... that is "Nautical Nellie's", which is a very good seafood joint in downtown Victoria, not "Naughty Nellie's", which is a chip shop in the suburbs. Understandable mistake. If you come here expecting ocean views, you'll be disappointed.

Best fish and chips we've had in a while. We had the 2 peice halibut with small fries (small fries were plenty enough for 2 people) fries/chips were cooked to perfection. The halibut was cooked to perfection and lightly battered. We order take out and are in the parking lots since we were on a work trip and had a small dog with us. The tarter sauce was blended perfectly with zesty lemon and dill. Coleslaw was fresh and and just the right amount of dressing. They also had an assortment of drinks so we got a can of coke to go with our lunch. Over all we highly recommend. Staff was super friendly and helpful prices were reasonable. Highly recommend the fish and chips at Nellies!

I've always had a good experience eating here in the past, but my gosh not tonight's food. I'm not sure if they have changed their chef recently but this was the worst fish and chips I've ever had. The chips (technically fries) were soggy and have no flavour (they look very bland compared to normal fries), and the fish, again was very soggy. Hopefully you sort it out soon.

Usually have a great experience here, however tonight was an disaster from start to finish , due to covid there is no dine in , so we specifically asked the guy on the phone for cutlery and paper plates as we were going to go for a picnic and needed such items to properly eat the dinner , when picking up our food , we asked if there was tarter sauce in the bag because who can eat fish with out tarter sauce?? We found out that they charge separately for the sauce which I personally have never heard of, that was a slight annoyance as we had to make a separate purchase just for what I believe should come with the purchased meal as a condiment. We then asked if everything else was in the bag, they said yes , we left! When we got to our destination we found out that not only did they forget the plates, but also napkins and knifes , so we were unable to even eat our meal! All of that is forgiveable, chalk up to a bad night , what is NOT forgivable is the response we received when we called to explain our experience with their establishment, the manager was rude , unapologetic, and only suggestion to us was it’s fine , never come back to their restaurant, which is not a problem as I will never return to a business that speaks so rudely and disrespectful to their customers.

Yes, its in a suburban strip mall, but don't turn up your nose until you've tried it! ... we've eaten a lot of fish and chips, and are pretty particular about traditional fish and chips. The batter:fish ratio has to be perfect, the batter not overdone and not doughy, with enough taste and substance on its own, without overpowering the fish! Spend the extra to get halibut when its in season! Naughty Nellie's has a few seats inside for dining-in, but also does a steady takeout business (your fish and chips portions come traditionally wrapped ... in unprinted newspaper).

Naughty Nellie's is our favorite fish and chip shop in the city. Food quality is excellent, portions generous and cost reasonable. They have a small indoor seating area, closed of course due to Covid, but they have always had excellent takeout service and so they adapted to Covid reality very well.

Amazing food this little hole in the wall has gone through an ownership change and now has amazing customer service. Before you had to tolerate terrible service but now the new owners provide the best of both worlds. A very popular Fish and Chip joint in Gordon Head. Pro-tip: call in your order for pick up if you are doing take out during the dinner rush instead of waiting in line to place an order. They give you tonnes of fries, a nice thick cut they make from fresh potatoes, though they are never all that crisp. The batter on the fish is light soft, not overcooked. They make their own coleslaw, which is also quite good. There isn't much seating capacity, so if you want a seat try to avoid the rush. If you see a big line at the door, don't let that intimidate you. Those people are mostly there for take out and the line moves fast.

Fish and Chip places in Victoria run the gauntlet of ick to yay! This is in the yay category. I have eaten here many times as it's my mother in laws favorite place. Fish is cooked perfectly and never too greasy. Fries are intentionally left unseasoned to let you determine the amount of salt you want to put on them. Works out in my family as I like a little salt, my husband not any, my kids a lot and my mother in law likes salt and vinegar.

Perfect comfort food. Learn how to reheat your fries properly the next day (on a baking sheet, 20 minutes at 400 -450 until the oil seeps back out and the fries get crispy again) because you'll almost always have leftovers. Main items fall into the "brown food" category, but delightfully so. A guilty pleasure that I can feel 12 hours later, the delicious oil still coming out of my pores.

I am writing to say , if you buy anything in styro foam from NN's ~ REMOVE it from the packaging immediately upon getting it home ~ The packaging leaches into your food after an hour or so, that's in the fridge . The foam material SWEATS purple water drops through the container ~ this happened on Friday June 5 2015, in a large coleslaw container 2 hours after buying it. :( I called NN's on June 7 2015, the owner did not take my comments seriously ~ I calmly suggested they tell their customers to remove goods from the styro once they get home, if food was not eaten immediately. The owner thought any sort of normal person would know NOT to keep anything in styro...meant to be eaten right away etc... Also owner said they purchase styro @ wholesalers like everyone else. Fair enough. I remember styro being more food safe than this, I suppose these are some of the ' problems ' with faulty and cheap manufacturing... While NN's might get 5 stars from many, it gets a BIG THUMBS DOWN for going with the byline that is this ~ WTH everyone else is buying into this packaging what's the big deal...Really ? I don't think so. NN's leaves a bad taste in this Mom's mouth.

Nice cod burgers, good crunch and moisture! Don't try the calamari though. It tastes distinctly like it's been in the freezer too long... the smell didn't work for me either. Will definitely go back, but not for that.

Loved this place, but tonight was so bad probably wont risk my courtesy second chance for long time .one of my usual orders increased by 10 dollars, dinner rolls "accidentally" forgot. And fish could only have been more limp if it was steamed , rather than fried . *note , to be fair I was given the option to waste 2 bucks of gas to come pick up my 30 cents worth of dinner rolls . Thanks

After going there for 15 years i`m fed up with the rude Owner and and his now Greasy Fish and Chips! His cooks are not allowed to talk so they don`t care to drain the fish after frying and the fries are not fresh, skin on hand cut, they taste processed. When the owner has to put up prices because fish has gone up instead of explaining in in a polite way he yells at regular customers and tells them to go some where else and yes i will now be going to Haltain Fish & Chips! PS. Those very old No Name Google Reviews down below don`t fool anyone they just make it look like you have a great rating at first glance and you probably had someone put them there for you.

Order takeout - it's much cheaper! For the price (of takeout), they give you a large piece of fish (the cod is about the size of a phone) and lots of fries, both cooked perfectly. They also give you plenty of tartar sauce!

My son and I went to NN's for lunch today. The Halibut and Chips we ordered were fantastic. We were pleasantly surprised when the plates arrived - the serving was generous and delicious. When I say generous and delicious I mean the ramkin was stacked with fresh and bright coleslaw, the chips were great - golden brown on the outside and fully cooked on the inside - fresh fried to perfection. The star of the plate was the professionally cooked halibut - just the right balance of fish and coating fried to that golden, crispy bite we all desire. The friendly, courteous service made the entire visit special. I will definitely return in the future. Thank you to the cook and staff at NN's for producing a superior product.

Fish and chips like they should BE!! I’ve been coming to this establishment for years! And so have the bulk of his customers. The weather changes but this place continues to turn out one of the most consistent product in the city! The new owners seamlessly took over from John and Stella, and the product is as good as it was, if not better. The new owners are hard workers and take great pride in continuity of quality and service. I sat down with the new owner and he filled me in on just a little of what goes on behind the scenes in order to bring quality to the public!! They still peel their own potatoes and make their own coleslaw!! One of my favorites is the Caesar salad!! Always crisp and fresh when served. Georgio the chief fryer has been here for at least 20 years, and I would say that he is one of the reasons NF&C does so well. I would say he has fried many filets of fish and could do it in his sleep. He also takes great pride in his work, and his product proves it. I highly recommend this charming and delicious fish and chip restaurant!! You won’t be sorry you came! Hey, they make great hamburgers too! ENJOY!!

Food was good (had cod fish & chips), but the service left a bit to be desired. We were told we weren't allowed to sit inside even though they never asked us if we wanted it to go. They wouldn't even give us ketchup or tartar sauce for our food after charging us a different price than what was listed on the menu. Would maybe return...but only if they were to give us a free bottle of tartar sauce.

Gone way down hill since it was sold. This WAS the best in town, now it's marginal at best! Portions are small, halibut isn't thick anymore, they are buying steaks with bones and cutting it off bone, cheaper thinner pieces. Their fries are half the size as they use to be and barely feed two for a family. They don't give tartar sauce anymore and the price has gone up slightly. Sad that happened by selling, but new owners don't get why this was such a great shop before.

Today is the second time I have been a patron to Naughty Nellies, and it's the second time I have been moderately disappointed. The first time I dined here, they made the order right away when i called and didn't ask when I wanted the food. It was soggy when I arrived. Today I called ten minutes beforehand as I assumed he wouldn't ask for my timing again. When my call was answered, I was greeted with a quick hello of which I responded to find that he was speaking with someone in the kitchen before tending to me shortly after. I ordered an 2 piece dinner combo upgraded to halibut with a large coleslaw instead of small, and a medium chips not small. I also ordered one order of scallops. I had to repeat myself 3 times for clarity on his part as it seemed he wasn't understanding what I was requesting. I then asked what drinks they had he and said " Ten minutes", no inquiry to how my arrival time, no regard for the question asked. I repeated it and he said ten minutes again and I just said ok, see you shortly. I arrive after 11 minutes, speak to him at the door and he brings the receipt to affirm the order, it was lacking the medium chips as I was expecting. I mentioned it to him, recited my order again and he went sheepish shortly after he realized how he messed up, called for more chips to be dropped and then brought it to me shortly after, all the things I ordered and a small fries on top. Me and my partner walk to a bench shortly down the path in the complex, and open the meal. The scallops and the halibut were pretty good! There was no napkins at all. There was no utensils for the coleslaw, nor was I asked if I would need any. The chips were oil saturated and undercooked. It seemed like they need to change the oil or ensure they use a different fryer for their chips. I'm not sure if they are blanching the potatoes in their recipe, but it seems like there is no hold to the shape of the fries. I was hoping that the last time was just them not serving me fresh food. There was no salt at all in both occasions, today and the first visit. The employee could benefit from some Customer Service drills to improve clarity and when / where to inquire about customer needs and desires. They might also benefit from ensuring they know how to properly cook their fries for whomever was running the kitchen at the time ( or the chef should really look into their fries are so subpar recipe wise) Two times at a business and similar problems happening is enough to make me never go again. It's a bit of a shame as the rest of the food is honestly pretty good, fries aside!

Ordered take out a few weeks ago. Was good and tasty. Went in again last night for same thing. Drove home to find no tartar sauce. Drive back to get it and not pleased it’s getting cold at this point. Guy says it’s extra. Seriously? The owner just grabs one and gives it to me, which was the saving grace. Why would you sell fish and chips and not tell the customers you charge extra? You make a change like that and just send them away to look in bag at their home? Will go elsewhere.
