To this day this business gets a score of 4 stars out of 5 and this score was based on 127 reviews.
As you can see it has an average rating is very positive, and it is based on a very high number of feddbacks, so we can say that the score is quite reliable. If many people have bothered to value when they are happy, it works.
As you know, we don't usually bother to place evaluations when these are positive and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or issue...
This Fish Shop is included in the category of Fish & chips restaurant.
The Fish
Friendly staff, Large fries feeds 5 people! Fish was good. ????
Real friendly place, the owner is really nice and the fish and chips are very good. Go for the halibut.
Service: Great Atmosphere: friendly and welcoming Food: bang on delicious Cost: a bit pricey Overall: a nice experience Both fish and chips were delightful. The fresh cut fries were hot and crispy, exactly how fries should be. The fish (cod), hot and juicy had a very thin and crispy batter, really nice. I have had fish and chips in other places in Victoria and so far this is the best! Fish and chips bang on, only gripe is that it was a bit pricey.
Had their fish for the first time in a while, was completely disappointed, batter was old and flat, oil was smoking i am sure. Fries seemed like the just served the blanched batch. I did ask for well done fries but no such luck. Not going to be a repeat customer.
I’ve eaten here once but it was really good, and the staff were great with my husbands shellfish allergy.
It was quiet with new owners but everything was fresh and on point. Oil was fresh when fried
Haven't been since the change in ownership. Was greatly disappointed.
Worst place to go with your kids.... the owner is RACIST,doesn't like kids or black peoples i guess... sorry for her... she is a B**** .... won't recommend this place to anyone... burnside fish and ships are best...
The fish was very good one of the best I've had.
Always delicious!!!!
Delicious and fresh tasting. Wonderful friendly service.
It's not the same restaurant as it was back in the olden days but still OK. Square halibut but tasted good and not overly battered or greasy.
Great classic fish and chips restaurant
Nice sized halibut portions just larger than a deck of cards, solid. Pleasant service.
Lunch
In business for 90 years. Stopped by to get fries only but boy were they good, can't wait to try the fish. Really cool looking retro deep fryers.
Ordered 9 Halibut and Chips for my daughter's birthday last Saturday. This was the first time we had visited since the original owners sold the business. I'm so happy to say that the fish was beyond excellent! So crispy and wonderful. We all enjoyed our meal tremendously and are so happy to live so close to such a delicious Fish and Chips joint!
I'm picky when it comes to fish and chips, but both are great here. For me, it's the best in town.
Have been going her for over sixty years quality and service have always been great. Fish @ Chips are same today as years past
I visited Haultain Fish & Chips in September of 2015. I have to say that the food was absolutely the best that I have eaten in years! the fish was so moist, tender, and seasoned perfectly. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The only sad thing is that I am from Edmonton and I can't enjoy those wonderful fish and chips daily!! I will definitely stop in for more fish and chips on my next visit to Victoria!! This establishment definitely rates a 10 in my books!!! Cheers.
Best fish and chip s in Victoria. Service great and friendly.
For over 50 years this has been a #1 fish and chip shop. However, with the new owners I discovered recently the batter to fish ratio is excessive. No lemon as I requested, no coleslaw which was once included. I'm afraid I'm looking elsewhere from now on.
I've had Fish and Chips all over the world.. This place is the best ever.. ????
very fresh food. thanks
Great food!
Dec 2018. Not at all like Mary's thin batter. Typical too thick. No Brenda. After all the years, no. Nothing at all of Mary's restaurant. As said will not go again.
Best fish and chips in Victoria. Eat in or take out. Quick, friendly service and food that can't be beat. Convenient parking on the street in front. Closed Sundays and Mondays. Can be quite busy at times, but worth the wait!
My friend got hurt on her bike outside and the staff were super kind. Really lovely people!
Fish is kinda heavy but they give a good amount of fries!
Good food
Really good fish n chips!!
It was ok fish was soggy
Excellent fish and chips, best I've had in Canada since emmigrating here from the UK.
Amazing fosh and chips... never hasfailed over the years !!!
Was good.. something was off about the oil used to cook the food. It was good but would try another place next time.
Best tarter sauce I've ever had
Great service, meal served was real hot
The fish is excellent here if a little pricy. I don’t care for the softer diner style fries. We were told that a large fries would serve 3, but I’d say it’s enough for 4-5 people unless you really have a big appetite for fries.
Good Fish...portion could be bigger though.
Best halibut and chips anywhere!
Tiny, hole in the wall type place... Favourite with the locals....Great fish & chips...
Best F & Cs in Victoria
Had the Halibut on the first time we visited. Was good, but not what we're used to, since we've never had any other English style halibut to compare. On the second visit the following Tuesday we had the cod. Since most English style fish and chips are cod, we were served the best fish and chips we've ever had. The staff are especially friendly and are the perfect compliment to the "fish and chip diner" experience.
It's a famous place for fish and chips.
Good food, just prefer a thick crunchy batter on my fish.
Great fish and chips! Service was fast.
Enjoyed it
Returned for the first time in years. Same tasty food, and very friendly owners.
Our fish and chips tonight were amazing. The halibut was moist and the batter was perfect. Great job Tina and Mary!
Haven't been here for several years. I was a little surprised to see it was under new management...that being said...the place was spotlessly clean..better than before...great friendly service! Excellent food! Still busy..we were there at around 2 on a Tuesday..and still quite busy. Very good sign.
i was lucky to show up on a night when a family was sharing a special occasion; very welcoming and nostalgic to me. i came to the conclusion that every night is most likely to be memorable and perhaps a special occasion!
Food was sooo good!!! and service was fast, food was hot. Best place for fish and chips ever
Two piece cod was good but pieces were small... still enjoyed it... fries were good. Try them.
Website says "dining in" well after a half hour drive we find out "take out only" upon arrival.....no way to run a business......will never return!
Food, service and price all rate a 10.
Good traditional chips. Fish is delicious, but found the batter a bit heavy. Good slaw and tangy tartar sauce.
After reading good reviews about this place I finally decided to give it a try. Not very good, batter was doughy and fries were soggy. Extremely over priced. 2 cod and 1 order chips $27. Not worth it fish were small pieces for the price. Never will I go back there.
Always amazing here!
A Classic No More. We've eaten here for several decades. Sadly Mary sold the place. Now just another mediocre chippy. Oil is too hot so fish batter is too dark outside, not done all the way through. Chips were half OK & half not. The NOT ones were floppy and limp indicating not fresh from the frier.
Very disappointed . I ordered the cod my partner ordered halibut, both fish were soft and soggy, the chips were soft. I could get better food from frozen at my grocery store. I couldn't eat it ...it went into the compost. I will not go back.
Great fish and chips!
Great fish Tip order the small fries it a lot even for two people
Loved the halibut.
Quality fish & chips. Not greasy or overly salty. Located off of Cook St. The kind lady who took the my order came out to my car with my order.
The nicest piece of fish and the best batter I've ebner had in an order of fish and chips.
Awesome great food
Meal type
i enjoyed it at this place. they were really nice !
Little hole in the wall, with amazing food!
Great local little fish n chip shop. Exactly what you would expect. Good food, good prices, and clean atmosphere.
We read all of reviews and wanted to go here until read review from person who wear bathing suit to a restaurant. It very unsanitary, and noone wants to look at person who don't know how to be appropriate and is not properly clothes when eating our food. I guess a sign telling people to wear clothes would help, seems rather obvious but some people need help with the obvious. We do not even see this is Bulgaria and we have nude beaches. So here in Canada, we would expect not to be staring at someone's uncovered wedgie, bumpy skin and plumber crack..no word for how food was as we no longer had any feeling to eat.
Batter was tough, fries undercooked, tartar sauce tasted packaged, though it is possible they REALLY matched a store style recipe. However the staff were super nice and efficient. Also the halibut inside the batter was very good. So: staff yes, Fish yes, batter no, fries no, sauce no.... 2 star. I always hear good things though. Maybe this was a one off.
Staff were seemed put out that I wanted to dine in and charge a premium to do so. The food was ok but severely over priced. There are far better fish and chip places that are cheaper or on par with better food and larger serving amounts. If my meal was under 10 dollars I would be more positive but to pay over 15 dollars for one piece of fish and fries (coleslaw was extra) for what you received seems a little much. PS the tartar sauce was poor as well.
Really good halibut and chips!
Fast, excellent food, friendly people!
Fish was good but weren't the greatest fries and should be a bit more fries offered.
Great food good service
I would say the best fish and chips in town. It's pretty consistent. Prices are pretty high now but quality is really good. It's very popular so waits can be on the long side. Eat in or take out.
Looked like frozen fish. Why is it so hard to do good chips.
I had 2 oysters and 2 prawns and the batter was very thick and hard to chew. The oil tasted very old and needed to be changed. But the prawns and oysters (inside the batter) were pretty good. The take out service was fast and friendly.
Pricey but very good.
Ok food, but overpriced, halibut was dry.
I enjoyed the service and the food. It is a very nice, quaint, little establishment. Majority of customers dining appeared to be above the age of 55, however, this restaurant would appeal to anyone of any age. The atmosphere is very comfortable. I wore a bathing suit and received surprisingly few strange looks from the other patrons and the staff treated me as though I was fully clothed.
Best fish and chips in town!
Aged decor but friendly small town service
Always ordered takeout but best fish and chips I've had.
Sadly I no longer live down the street. Deep fried perogies are the best!
Wonderful little fish and chips place. Excellent food and service. We discovered this sweet place 'off the beaten path' and will be back as we enjoyed it immensely!
We just purchased the halibut and the fries! The quality was really bad! I wish I could give them no star! And people in the kitchen didn’t have a mask on! Soooo wrong during COVID!
Great fish and chip served in a very generous portion! Will definitely be going back again.
Just what a fish and chip shop should be.
Great fish
Nice little shop, fair prices, great fish!
Classic Victoria fish and chips
Had take out from here. Worst fish and chips I have ever had in my life.
Good fish and chips. Nice service. Cafeteria ambience.
First time here and new to the area. Owners were friendly and the halibut and chips was good!
Went on a quiet afternoon, had this tiny place to ourselves. Clam strips were average because bought frozen, not made in the premises. But halibut and chips were from scratch and very good and the service was quietly efficient
Such a sweet couple and the best fish and chips I've had in a very long time
I was told to go here. Friendly staff. Comfortable environment! PS. INCREDIBLE FISH!!!
Just a very, very solid place for some fish and chips. Can't go wrong ????
Hidden gem
Best fries I've had easily Awesome fish
Always Great! This is my fish and chips place. Food has stayed the same with new ownership.
It was a'ight (lol)
The coleslaw was gross and the tartar sauce was inedible. The fish was edible but nothing to rave about. I am not planning to return but when I do it will be to give them advice on the recipere they are using. Also found the service was kinda snarky and not very happy to serve us. The other server they had couldn't even speak English.
Unfriendly service, fries were soft and not at all crunchy
The food is adequate but ever since the previous owner left, things have changed and not necessarily for the better. For instance, the price has gone up and the portion of the food has dwindled. Gone are the days where you could order a 2 piece halibut meal, with fries and coleslaw for under $20!
The fish pieces were small and not tasty and the chips appeared to be microwaved from frozen and tasteless. Never again.
Very disappointing. New owners ? Take out food obviously reheated. Huge serving of chips but dry and not hot. Fish nicely cooked but batter cold and soft. Did not appear freshly cooked.
Super expensive for what you get. Staff are nice and it's very clean
This place is awesome. The bests places in Victoria to go for fish and chips.very popular with the locals so it’s busy.
The cod was not very good and the tartar sauce was plain. Not my favorite place won't be going back
QUICK and Amazing.
Honestly...not good. Tried the oyster burger and ordered a small fries (which definitely serves 2-3 people, heads up). The oysters were huge, but a bit rubbery, and the batter was bland, doughy-soft, and excessive. There was nothing other than oysters and a teaspoon of tartar between the buns. I didn't expect the crispiest fries considering I had a 5 minute drive until I could eat my lunch, but the fries were blanched then barely fried. They also had no salt. Coleslaw and tartar were hugely expensive so I didn't bother adding them. Ate about half, and the rest went in the bin. I see it's under new ownership so I'll wait a while before trying again, hopefully they make a few recipe changes to bring it closer to it was before.
Tasty & super clean
Horrible experience. When i used to go here it was owned by a dutch woman who was a truely wonderful chef. Now it is under new asian management. Our waitress had trouble understanding what we were asking for and messed up our order. When we got our fish and chips only some people got a lemon on their plate which was wried because it should be served with all the fish. I would have asked for a couple more lemons but our waitress never came back once the food was served. The food itself was poor. The chips were a very pale white and soft..... chips should be golden brown and crispy.... the best way to describe it is the chips looked sick. The cod batter was chewy and gummy, I dont even know how that is possible but it was so gummy it fell off the fish in large chunks so i just didn't eat it cause it was so gross. Seriously dissapointing and overpriced. Food and service sucked.
Service
Food was ok...hot crispy fish and decent fries but nothing amazing. For one smallish piece of deep-fried halibut, a single serving of fries, and a cup of brewed coffee it was $18.75 plus tip put it over $20. If you take out it would have been about $14. For $20, I can have an excellent meal elsewhere. No one else finds this over-priced? Having said that, the staff were friendly and prompt, although I would have appreciated being told that the prices for take-out and sitting-in were very different. Still, every booth was full. Very puzzled about this one...I guess I am missing the cachet.
The halibut was so fresh. Great value.
Good food
just got better fast Service fries and lots of fish
A victoria staple. Always so good to my kids and I.
Best fish and chips in Victoria
Great Fish And Chips. Plus onion Rings Ill be back There
Classic neighborhood hole-in-the-wall; everything one might expect of a little FnC diner. Interior decor was pleasingly shabby, complementing the faded signage outside and awkward location. Excellent fish, light crispy batter, tender fish, great chips, fast, affordable, with a collection of memorable staff. And they serve on newspaper. Grampa approved.
Fair place to eat sea food
Proper fish and chips!
Great stuff.. Great food.. Come as you are
Amazing fish and chips, must visit when in Victoria, BC
The food is awesome best fish
love the halibut!
Very expensive and the fish was over cooked.
very fresh food. thanks
Liked the lady (owner?) at the counter, salt of the earth type. The fish was good and fries good, just a little to costly for me to go to often.
Liked the lady (owner?) at the counter, salt of the earth type. The fish was good and fries good, just a little to costly for me to go to often.
Nice people, great french fries!
Superb fish and chips. The best in Victoria.
Best fish chip ever. Great customer services + fast food. If you are a tourist, this will be your best one as it is quiet and not crowded. 여기 강력 추천합니다!
Perfectly cooked a bit bland. No tarter sauce or lemon. May have been our fault as we asked for no ketchup or vinegar.
Always great fish and chips! Consistant and good!
Not great. Fish batter was not at all flaky. Chips underdone. (Barely browned) Kinda pricey. Wouldn’t return. Tartar sauce was mostly mayonnaise. And fish and chips weren’t hot. Just barely warm.
Best fish and chips ever. I was looking around the restaurant, and it very clean, which made me feel good. I'll be back soon.
Take out
It was fresh and fast and they was super nice and services is fast too
I'm afraid the customer whom left the review below ⬇️ just put a stop to me ever becoming a customer. There is a reason most establishments have a "no shirt-no shoes- no service" policy and that reason is proper sanitation.
Beautiful size halibut and very nice service.
Well....2 PC halibut and chips, with home made tartar was $34, fish was square cut and thin,?? Quite greasy. Chips and tartar were good. Has this place sold with new owners???
Best Fish and Chips Ever!! Such wonderful & friendly staff!
Delicious, fresh and filling. Definitely eat in!
Fantastic food great service .. Well worth the wait
Bare bones, really good halibut, and large local following. They treat you like one of the family.
The owners are the staff and wow do they really put their heart and heads into giving you a true English fish and chips experience, just as good as back in London when I used to visit in my childhood. I thought the prices maybe a little high until I tasted the food, worth every penny!
Haultain was recommended to us last week Went there on Nov 4 around 5:30. Really! $37.00 for 3 pcs fish, 2 chips and 1 iced tea. Fish ptns were small, and batter was over cooked. I felt really cheated. The chips are good, better than the over rated Red Fish Blue Fish. Its hard to find good chips in Victoria, seems culinary schools don't teach how to peel a spud. Good hunting...
A bit expensive but what isnt these days especially for quality. Super friendly staff. Would definitely go here again. Large fries is enormous :)
Good food. New owner but food is just as good as before.
Fish n chips fine but the milk shakes are Devine. My daughter's fav. I swear.
A friend and I went for dinner tonight, we live in the area so this is the neighborhood restaurant which we sometimes visit. There are new owners so we thought we would give them a chance. We both had the one piece halibut and fries with coleslaw. There are also tartar sauce which tasted like it was mixed with mayo, I guess they thought it would go further but it tasted like plain mayo. The fries are nothing special, which was disappointing. The fish was dry and tasteless. The coleslaw was plain like it was under seasoned. So in all I think next time we crave fish and chips we will have to go elsewhere.
Flaccid fries, good cod tasteless batter, good service overpriced, friendly
Quick service and great fish and chips! The fry portion size is insane. Highly recommend calling in orders so you're not stuck waiting in line. I wouldn't recommend ant other items on their menu but thr fish and chips are all you need!
Great place. Consistent. Good prices.
Best fish and chips in Victoria
Fries were soggy, cod fish reminded me of Captain highliners and about the same size. Tartar tasted like mayonnaise. Will not be eating here again.
Great, fresh and crispy fish and chips! When I saw how much care was put into wrapping them up I knew I would not be disappointed. Chip portions are generous
Slow service
Was very good fish. But the fries tasted reheated. Went hard very quickly. Have to say also, miss the other owners who would throw in free pieces of fish to regular customers.
Great service. Yummy food. Good portions
It was not as good as thr summer. Tasted like the cooking oil needs to be changed.
Nice fish chips are large
Their website said they were open so I drive across town only to find they are closed! Frustrating!!
The fish is cooked to the right crisp. The fries are big and tasty.
Halibut and chips were quite good. Cod though was not to the same level. Hard to swallow the price though. Almost $100.00 for fish and chips for 4 people.
Fries were undercooked way too expensive for the products offered. The quality was not there
Their batter is fantastic, very good fish.
First-rate fish and chips.
Great no frills fish and chips
Hi. Owners, please heed this review. Im from scotland. The product was great. Prices were terrible. Far too much. It breaks my heart honestly.
Always great fish and chips, best in Victoria
The food was very good. Halibut and chips. Haven't been here since the Mary sold the restaurant. Must say that the new owner has maintained the old standards. Recommended.
This place is a complete rip off. I ordered over the phone and I thought I had ordered a two piece cod, fish and chips meal for about $18.00. When I picked up my order I found out that price was only for the fish, and the chips were an additional $6.00. $24 .00 plus change for two pieces of cod and a bunch of soggy fries wrapped up in newspaper. No salt, no vinegar, no tartar sauce and no coleslaw. The food was adequate but not worthy of the price nor the trouble of ordering and picking up. There are plenty of better fish and chip joints in Victoria. Be warned! Avoid this rip off restaurant.
Always friendly people., Consistently good food.
Best place in town for fish&chips
My childhood fish and chip joint and i still love to pick it up once a month for my kiddlets
I should have ordered the individual chips for 2 if us. Food was tasty and reasonably priced.
Not the same as it was!
Chips are delicious!! Unfortunately have been caught out a couple of times now with inconsistent hours - I think they must close early when they're quiet
Loved the halibut
Nothing compares
Fast, friendly and TASTY.
Great family run fish and chip shop. High quality fish with a light tasty batter. Friendly service, favourite in Victoria!
Mm mm fish
Over priced, rubbery batter, underdone fries....nothing about the fish n chips was positive. Day old Red Fish Blue Fish tacos were WAY better.
Been a favorite since I was a kid.
I did not like the fish. My halibut was mushy and the fries did not taste right.
This long time Fernwood staple continues to serve some of the best fish and chips in the city ????. Well worth stopping by.
1st time I have gone to haultain fish and chips since it had been sold and run by the new owners. Unfortunately it's not as good as it used to be. The batter is not as light and fluffy, the fish itself is not as good either. But I can say that they do still make good fries and generous portions. They keep their fryers clean, and the fries don't have a fishy taste. I do think that their coleslaw is better than it used to be, but the homemade tarter sauce is not. The new owners are friendly and they now take orders for pick-up. If I remember correctly, the last owners did not do that. But I think it was just cuz they were soooo busy, that it was 1st come 1st serve. All in all, they are doing better than I thought they would, cuz there are alot of places out there that just don't know how to cook fish & chips these days!
So good and th owners were so nice! Love it!
We went here when I was a kid. Just came back, it's just as good as I remember! The fish was amazing!
Sounds like management is now writing its own reviews ?? yes Mary had to move on , just like everybody else will .. not the best anymore However . there is a well kept secret and is a all you can eat fish & chip and a restaurant Wednesday for ($ 23.00) ..
Good amount of fish and chips for the price! Delicious!
Its ok..... fish was ok but chips could have been cooked abit longer.. staff was very friendly
As a Londoner, and huge Fish & Chip fan - this place is FANTASTIC!!! Does my homeland national dish proud! The service is great, the food is amazing - and the prices are brilliant! - I recommend this place over any in Victoria!
Always a pleasure. The food and sevice is great.
Always delicious
STILL DOESNT OFFER DINE-IN.
Fast and delicious
Service and price was great. Food was fantastic!
New owners suck
QUICK and Amazing.
