We have all the reviews of people who are buying the services of The Fryin' Guys (Fish Shop) near to the area of Niagara-on-the-Lake (Canada).
To this day this firm has a rating of 4.2 stars out of 5 and that score was based on 127 reviews.
You must have seen that the average of ratings that it reaches is very good, and it's founded on a very large number of opinions, so we can be pretty sure that the evaluation is very reliable. If there are many people who bothered to evaluate when they've done well, it works.
As you know, we do not usually bother to give scores when these are good and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or incidence...
This Fish Shop is classified in the category of Fish & chips restaurant.
The proportions are great and the fries are also pretty tasty but the fish is extremely greasy and needs work, the meat isn't bad quality but in its current state it is very hard to recommend
Delicious and good size portion . Love the coleslaw.
Fryin GUys is a small nice little place to sit and eat dinner. These are really good people and they serve up so very good fish. Go give them a try. Enjoy.
Halibut fish tasted like chicken and it was extremely dry and very small portions for the price you pay.
Service
Obviously under new owners! The two gals who owned it originally knew how to keep customers coming back. I used to get the 2 pc halibut dinner when they owned it and the halibut portions were huge. Enough to satisfy 2 people. Not any more! They take 1 halibut fillet and cut it in half to call it 2 pieces. Whole dinner was greasy and overcooked. I'm afraid they've lost my business!!!
Dinner
I don't care for fish but I will eat the fish and chips here. Light batter crispy and the chips are to die for. Not greasy. I highly recommend this place. The owner and staff are great. Always going that extra mile.
I've moved to the area and have been looking for "the perfect fish and chips". Well I was not disappointed when I went here. I love the new paper wrap and will be coming back for more in the near future.
First time ordering a 1 piece Halibut and Chips. Omg...so disappointed! The Halibut piece was small compared to other competitors in the area. Lyle meat, thin and mostly batter. Over kill on the price...when I ordered I thought for $16.95 w/ tax this fish better be meaty and a good portion. It was not. They also charge for extra tarter sauce, ketchup and mayo. Not impressive whatsoever...will never return!
I ordered for Good Friday today, spent almost $80 and was very let down by the quality of food I received. I've ordered here for the last 14 years and it's been about 2 years since my last order, so I thought it would be a nice treat. I wish I never did. The amount of grease that was pooling in the box was unacceptable and gross. The fish should have been laid out to allow the grease to subside before placing it into the box. The fries looked burnt and almost like the grease in the fryer hadn't been changed in awhile, my kids even refused it eat them. The portion for fries didn't equate to a 6 PC family meal either. I used to work there when I was 14 and I can certainly say that it is nothing like how it used to be. Sadly, I will not be a returning customer anymore.
Ordered a 2 pieces of fish a poutine and a fry. the fries were all burnt and tasted bitter. Called to let them know and they told me it was because of the "type of fry". I had to throw them out. Not recommended and I won't be ordering again.
Hands down the best place for fish and chips in the Niagara region. Always perfectly battered regardless of which kind of fish you get. Absolutely perfect with malt vinegar and tartar sauce. Highly recommended!
Being English, the fish and chips are just as I expected. Will be going there again!
My parents have enjoyed this spot for many years. Great fish and great fries! Malt vinegar?! Of course! Seven days without fish makes one weak
2 orders of deep fried pickles and way to much batter to point I can’t eat them
Great classic fish and chips!!!! Just can't afford to buy it once a week. Definitely worth the $$$
Have been going here for years. Today was the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Batter was awful fries were so hard I couldn't stick my fork in them. Called to tell them that and basically got told sorry tough luck. Won't be going there any text soon. Should have got pizza
Everything was great about this place. Fish was fantastic. Fries were great and the gravy was delicious. I know it's just powdered stuff but I think they must enhance it somehow. I'm sure all the locals know about this restaurant but if you are new in town or staying at a hotel, go get dinner here. You won't be disappointed.
Had the best and authentic fish n chips after a long time. Hats off to the chef. Mouth watering taste and love the way they even kept the packaging so original as well. Highly recommend
Amazing food. Friendliest service ever. Highly recommend this place!! Ask for the crab dumplings. :D
Super reasonably priced, I got the Haddock, and the fish was mind blowingly good, and the fries are like the fries you'd get in Britain. 10/10!
Great, classic fish and chip shop. I only discovered this one recently but I wish I had found it a lot sooner! The prices are great, food is excellent and the atmosphere of the place is just cool. This restaurant is over 70 years old and just has that classic character. Try it, you won't be disappointed.
Was the 1st fish place my parents introduced me to. Here we are 40+ years later, still loving every delicious bite! And the prices are very comparable to the portion size! TEN THUMBS UP!
the reviews here must be mostly fake accounts made by the owner... I went here based on the reviews and was VERY disappointed, fish was soggy and gross. fries were dark brown and cold inside. usually google reviews helps me find good food, today it did the opposite. never going here again
We were eating dinner here this evening and as usual we were very satisfied with the food and the service. (We don't go out a lot but when we do we enjoy it here) The owner took time to have conversations with us which I found very intriguing. She is very smart. Listening to her you can tell she has a big heart. Great food, great people. We look forward to going back again soon ☺ UPDATE: Decided to go to Fryin' Guys today as we haven't been in awhile. There are new owners but they are very friendly. They get your name and treat you like family. The food is just as good as ever. If you haven't been here, give it a try. May turn out to be your new favourite place ????❤????❤????
I ordered halibut and fries. Halibut's position was good for the price, except it was terribly greasy. Fries were not done enough. The server at the widow needed to check the attitude. He was pretty rude to the older man that clearly had a disability in front of me. When I mentioned his customer service, he told me to mind my business. I'm happy I ordered my food beforehand.
The Good: Fryin Guys has a quaint 1950's "mom and pop shop" atmosphere. The young guy behind the counter was really polite and welcoming. There are tables inside so you can sit and eat. The cook, JP, went out of his way to come out and introduce himself which was pretty awesome. The prices are reasonable (especially considering the price of fish right now) and the menu is fully disclosed online. The service was fast but its not "fast food". The Bad: The fries were a little over cooked but the fish made up for it. We could definitely have survived more tartar sauce. No healthy options available (no salads/ veggies) but not unusual for a fish and chips place. They do have mushy peas and coleslaw however. The Awesome: The best fish and chips I've had in a very long time. Perfect crust on the fish, gorgeous golden brown colour, quaint take ut container. What more could you ask for. The fish is nice and tender without being chewy, and has a slight vinegary aroma that will remind you of authentic Irish cooking. There are 3 types of fish on the menu, pollock, haddock and halibut. I chose pollock (the cheapest option) and it was AMAZING! The Verdict: Great fish and chips place at a wonderful price.
Ordered 2-2pc halibut and chips with gravy. The fish is good but portion size is so small. The fish is half of what it should be. Also the gravy was cold...like right out of the fridge cold!! Very disappointed!!
Visiting The Niagara Region and a local put us on to this join. The Fish & Chips is off the rails good. Fresh cut fries and fresh made fish. They do other delicious authentic English food items; meat pies and mushy peas. It’s been here for 70yrs and is a iconic staple in The Niagara Region....Oh ya don’t forget the to try there crab dumplings. Down right tasty as heck. 6 Out 5 ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ????
Just spent 28$ on the smallest pieces of fish ever. Hello I ordered the halibut not the gold fish. New owners should be ashamed of ruining such a good place. Thanks for nothing fryin guys. Or should we call you Ruining guys!! Hang your head low.
The food is outstanding iam new to st catherine just got to love there fish
Fish and fries (chips) were hot and crisp. We ate in at the restaurant. Coleslaw was good though too finely grated for my taste. We had options of both white and malt vinegar. Good butter tarts too. The employee (owner?) was friendly and helpful. We're recommending to friends.
This place used to be great. Change in ownership has changed the quality and treatment of the customers/ old regulars. We don't eat here anymore. The food is really bad especially compared to previous years. I have seen the new owners yell at customers and drive business away.
Halibut here is the best in town. Unless you catch yourself a Pickerel you aren’t going to top what they’re serving.
Meal type
I eat fish and chips all summer long and i always wondered about this place and well it wad a fail. Greasey mess no crisp on anything. Actual fish wasnt bad but the batter and fries were poor.
I painted the sign on this place in 2004. The fish and chips were great! I revisited yesterday and there was a 14 year old kid taking my order. Another teenager in the back solitude. Waited for 20 minutes. No one spoke to me and when I got it home the newspaper was dropping in oil. Gross. Whoever is running this place better get wise . It was disgusting! Inedible!
It's very good fish i highly reccomend this place over other ones, very friendly staff.
Fish and fries were very good
I love the fish but the frys are cooked to long almost burnt or the oil is done
Best Fish & Chips in Town, a must try indeed ????
Always fast, fresh, and delicious. Best fish and chips in the City.
Quick and prompt service with a generous portion size and fair prices. Would 100% recommend and will return. Some of the best fish and chips I've had in a while. Popcorn shrimp are also very good!
Awesome food ..... awesome service ..... even helped me out when I didn't actually have a phone call them with! Definitely recommended!
Ate here for the first time just the other day. My wife and I typically get Lakeport Fish & Chips but a friend recommended we try Fryin' Guys and I'm definitely glad we did. Had a 2-piece with fries and really enjoyed it. The portions of fish are generous and they don't overload you with fries which is nice. The batter on their fish is delicious and crispy, and the fries are done to perfection. It's a little more expensive than Lakeport but worth it in my opinion. The meal was delicious! I'll definitely be back. Highly recommend!
Great little place. Fish is excellent. A little on the pricey side but that's fish for you. Great selection and good value.
So far the best fish 'n chips we've eaten in the Niagara area. Will definitely return for more.
I don't care for fish but I will eat the fish and chips here. Light batter crispy and the chips are to die for. Not greasy. I highly recommend this place. The owner and staff are great. Always going that extra mile.
Smallest portion size of haddock I’ve ever seen with an insane amount of mediocre fries. The fish was pretty good tho, that’s the only reason it gets two stars
The absolute best place for fish and chips in all of Ontario, if not North America. Only place that I've found that is even close is Rula Bula, in Phoenix, AZ...
The place is small and quiet. The price is very reasonable. I like their fish and chips so much, I shared a 2nd order with my wife.
One girl doing everything, taking orders, cooking, wrapping, checkout. I guess it's no wonder that the fish was rubbery, the onion rings were chewey and the fries were greasy. I hadn't been here in years. It used to be the best fish & chips around. I was looking forward to this order. I was really disappointed. I gather it's under new management. They should have kept the old guys around for a spell to teach them how to cook. I guess it's decided now. DJ's is the best around, no contest. FGs just took last place on my list of fish & chip places. I won't be back, ever.
I went there sun Oct 11th and ordered 2pc haddock and fries and a large gravy and it came to JUST under $20!!! The pieces of fish were the size of the palm of my hand. Half the size they used to be. The fish was greasy and tasteless. The store smelled so bad I almost left when I walked in. Overpriced and crummy looking place that used to be THE place to go...... not anymore and never again
Excellent food and friendly service. The halibut and chips were so so good and portions generous. I highly recommend this place and will be making it my go to fish shop.
Service
Ordered $115 of halibut and chips for take out. The fish was pretty good with a nice golden-brown batter but the fries were just horrible. Each and every fry was overcooked, dry and dark brown in colour. I will never return to this restaurant again and I suggest anyone who enjoys having fries with their fried fish to look elsewhere.
Ordered for take-out and the staff was great! The food was good, and the tartar sauce was AMAZING, though the fish tasted as though the oil needed to be changed.
I was very disappointed. When I was a kid, many many years ago my parents would treat us to fish and chips every now and then from here. Today, the quality doesn't compare to that time. Very greasy fish and fries. Cheap potatoes for fresh cut fries. Won't go back
Always a great experience here! Fish is delicious and the chips are just beautiful. Friendly staff and the owner is a great guy. You can tell they have passion. Always supporting local keep up the great work guys!
Grabbed fish n chips for good friday ???? ???? it was ???????? good. The chips ???? were very good ????????. All in all it was a perfect good friday dinner ????????
I have never eaten here, but I just want to say my dogs and I really appreciate the bowl of water you leave out for the dogs. It's such a pain to juggle 2 dogs and carrying water on hot summer days. So thank you for giving that to them so they can get a drink half way through out walk.
Had fish and chips here with my girlfriend this past weekend. The fish was very good although the price was very high for the amount of food you get and the staff weren’t very friendly as well. Also on a no tartar sauce for the fish and no ketchup for the fries as well. We will not be coming back. People never respond to my review too they don’t care.
Best fish and chips I've ever had. They have a secret recipe for their batter that goes back for decades, if not centuries. The employees are very friendly, and it's always a pleasure to eat there. Most people just order their meal and pick it up to-go. I get the fried haddock, which I think tastes great, but they also offer pollock and halibut, as well as crab dumplings (very good), and shrimp. I know someone who is originally from England, and when she's in town, she insists on going here, because she says it's the only place on this side of the pond where she can get fish and chips like back home.
I ordered the poutine and my friend got the fish; we both recieved food poisoning instead.
What a delightful meal. Batter was light and crispy, fish was flaky and tender. I'm not a big fan of fries, but they were good. I will return and definitely recommend!!
A little expensive but some of the best fish and chips in town with great customer service and we ate outside at the picnic tables. Beautiful day and awesome lunch.
Great service, and even better fish and chips. So happy I live close enough to make the trip more often.
Best fish and chips ever!
Really awful stuff.....It use to be great here years ago when it had different owners.....Never seen so much grease and batter and so little dried up fish friends are black from dirty oil and soggy.....dont waste money literally go anywhere else. lakeport is better for half the price and if that tells you anything.......its dont eat here. I always give restaurants benefit of doubt by visiting twice and all i did was waste my money twice.
The food was amazing .my wife and i thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The fresh cut fries were awesome. The fish was cooked perfect. The batter was delicious and not greasy.we would for sure recomend this place to our friends. We will go back for sure.

If you’re in St Catharines and love fish and chips, this will be your fave f&c joint. They have, and will probably always use newspaper to wrap your boxed fish and chips and it’s pretty much nostalgic. Even pre and (God willing, soon to be) post pandemic, most people just do a grab and go for this since there are like 3 tables in the joint with two seaters but you can’t go wrong. It makes me want to order some now. Fish and chips are literally the best here.
Service was good, fries were good, but both my girlfriend and I got food poisoning from the fish. The batter was raw on the inside and we ate it against our best judgement because we were hungry. Both of us had to miss work today making it a very expensive dinner.
Its the bomb diggity. Great food excellent service.
I have been a long time customer... quality is dropping. The fish tasted over cooked. The fried pickels were totally uneatable. Heating up President choice Noname at home would have tasted better.... sorry ????
Always the best! Friendliest Staff and most delicious food. It's the only place I will get my fish and chips!!
Delicious fish and chips. These are not overly greasy as some reviews may state. Crispy tasty fish and fabulous crisp chips. The staff are super friendly. I love this place, my favourite fish and chip spot in St.Catharines. So many good options other than fish.
Ok, it's been a few years (10?) since we have been here, but fish dinner to go, still wrapped in newspaper. Dinner was piping hot when I got home. And as tasty as I had remembered! I remember way back 55 years ago, fish n chips from Frying Guys was a real treat then, just as it was today! I'll definitely be returning! But it won't be another 10 years!
The best Fish n' Chips place I've been to in a while. The staff were super friendly, and it felt really homey :) Thanks guys!
Ordered family fish meal, fish looked like plastic and the whole carton was damp from grease. Tasted like chewy chicken. More of the meal was taking off all the batter, because there was no fish. Worst thing I’ve ever had. Called the place they didn’t really care. Probably won’t go back. Want expensive fish go somewhere else
My Dad lives in NOTL and has been disappointed with his usual F&C joint of late, so we checked out Fryin' Guys. We got halibut and chips (and chicken fingers for our kids), and everything was perfect. They were very apologetic that we had to wait a bit (it was a very busy Friday, and the wait wasn't even that long), and carefully asked us before offering our kids lollipops while we waited. The paper even kept things hot for our 15 minute drive. Will definitely be going back.
What is this guys? Ordered the two halibut and these portion sizes for the price are a complete and utter joke. I really wish I saw the review with the pics prior to ordering from here for my first time; never again. Insulting to be honest when you compare to other fish and chip places. In addition, the halibut was really chewy which means overcooked, a double whammy. Popcorn shrimp tasted previously frozen too.
Amazing halibut!! They also have tons of other seafood options! The staff that work here make you feel welcome as soon as you walk through the door!
amazing customer service. The owner and staff are incredibly welcoming. best fish in town! - Mitch
Cute little place to have amazing fish first time going with my mom and daughter
Take out
This place used to be great. Change in ownership has changed the quality and treatment of the customers/ old regulars. We don't eat here anymore. The food is really bad especially compared to previous years. I have seen the new owners yell at customers and drive business away.
The fish was terrible. I usually order Halibut and they didn't have any so I had to get the Haddock and it was the worst fish I have ever had. I don't normally order from this establishment but my other place closed on Monday. I wouldn't go back to this place again.
Good fish and chips, not like the old days though! Super expensive. Staff are friendly and service is good.
We ordered for a family of 7 and we got more batter than fish. Im sorry but ill not recommend fish from here.
First time there won’t go back, fish was greasy and way too much batter, and sorry I don’t want the grey underbelly on my white fish. Fries were weird tasting.
order from here and come in to pick up. nice place and nice guy at counter but fish was very not good cooked.... fries are hard and brown they look old. and it was expensive I buy for my family it cost me almost 50$ for 3 people eating
Being new to town, I did a Facebook poll asking community peeps for fish and chips recommendations in my area. Many recommended The Frying Guys. Good call! Cameron was friendly and professional and obviously takes pride in the products, as well he should! I had the halibut and really enjoyed my meal! One of the few places that offers house-made tartar sauce! Everything was delicious and Cameron was a pleasure to deal with. Highly recommend!
The only fish and chips place that my family and I eat at. The haddock is awesome! The staff is always really friendly too. Would definitely recommend!
Grabbed fish n chips for good friday ???? ???? it was ???????? good. The chips ???? were very good ????????. All in all it was a perfect good friday dinner ????????
SMALL PORTION!! Kinda disappointed.. had the 3 piece halibut a couple weeks ago and the portions were great everything was fine.. today we got 3 tiny pieces of halibut that look like they were cut in half to stretch out their supply or something. Common.. when you're paying 45 dollars for 3 pieces of fish they shouldn't be so damn small..
Yummy fish & chips. Coffee is great tasting as well . Just a small fish & chip place . $9.99 for one serving fish and chips. This place has been in service since 1949 .Homey , comfortable place.. friendly atmosphere.
My dad sent my spouse and I and our first time experience was amazing! The owner is a real nice guy, service was amazing, food cooked perfectly. Definitely our favorite spot to eat when we come into town. Highly recommend
Small place but great quality. If you like deep fried fish this is the best place I've ever been to. I'm from out west in Saskatoon and I know the good places for fish and chips but the Fryin Guys are like nothing I've ever had before. The price is worth it. My favourite place to go for deep fried halibut. I know you guys read these things and I'm telling you this place would put all the fish and chip restaurants in Saskatoon to shame. Small places always put their customer first and deliver quality food.
Straight up honest to goodness fish and chips. Tasty and large portions and reasonable prices. I'll be back.
I was beyond impressed with their professional attitude towards me and their business. Honoured a past promise to correct an issue with an order. NOT my experience in the past with others since the Covid delivery protocol happened with the closures. Can’t say the same for Pizza Hut…but Frying Guys is a stand up crew, with a great attitude to the customer and AMAZING SEAFOOD. I will never buy fish and chips anywhere else; ever. THANK YOU FRYING GUYS STAFF.
So greasy it gave me a stomach ache, just dripping... the box was drenched and leaked out of the bag onto my car seat and now there's a grease stain. Fish n chips is supposed to be crispy, not a soggy bland mess. Gross. Zero stars.
First and last time going here....we ordered 8 piece haddock only to get home and find out it was 6 of the smallest pieces of fish I have ever gotten from a restaurant...we called and got reimbursed so that was good...but I want full size fish when I pay that kind of money....sorry but we wont be back...
They make THE BEST F&C AROUND.. Tables w/umbrellas outside.. People are Very Pleasant.!! Helpful, they tell you the difference in types of Fish, etc. Good Atmosphere .. Plus, for those who read the Coffee News, LOL, they have it..!!
We usually have no issues with this place, the food has always been great. But tonight we ordered and the fish was soggy, the fries and gravy were cold and the tartar sauce was very thick and only tasted like miracle whip. Very disappointed.
Light crispy batter, attentive staff, great fish and chips all round.
We've lived in St Catharines for a year now. We live close and these guys offer a good no nonsense fish and chips. I don't think it's the cheapest you'll find but we're definitely always happy. Takeout is fast, ready within 40 mins even on holidays. Staff is friendly. There's some complaints in the reviews about about stuff being undercooked, etc. I have never experienced this. Only good things. Just a good local takeout spot. Enjoy.
They suggest I could “stay” safe with the Haddock or I could go over the top with Halibut!!!! I chose the Halibut and was SO NOT disappointed. It was awesome and I would definitely go back.
Ordered a three piece meal. Talk about skimping on the portions. My girlfriend joked around and put two small pieces of fish together and said they made one whole piece. It was very embarrassing for me. The portions were small and my girlfriend made fun of this, which is another way of her saying CHEAP!
What a wonderful old school fish and chips spot. This is for serious lovers only, wonderfully cooked and deep deep fried chips made with love. Best spot in town, wish we lived closer and it would be the best in Toronto too. Friendly service and spectacular food.
Great little place. The fish and mushy peas were spot on. The chips were adequate, I'm not sure why but chips on this side of the pond are just never quite right. Helpful staff and good prices. Recommended.
Take out
The food is great--not too greasy and large pieces of fish. Add to that that the staff are super friendly and you'll see why this quickly became my go-to spot for fish & chips in the neighbourhood!
Best fish and chips... Period. I lived in the UK for years and this is better than anything I found in London.. Brilliant guys, keep up the good work
Wow! Great first experience...will definitely be coming back again. Really enjoyed the halibut, it was cooked perfectly. Not too much batter, it was crispy, and the fish inside flaked nicely and was not greasy. The oil was obviously the right temperature. The fries were soggy, but that could be because I got take out and they don't always travel well. I am not a big fry (chips) fan anyways, so I wouldn't hold that against them. The scallops and shrimp were cooked well, and my only complaint was that I wanted more. The tartar sauce and coleslaw were fresh and tasty. Overall, it was a bit on the pricey side in absolute terms, but I'm willing to spend the money for quality, and the quality was there, so I will say it was good value for money, especially since it's next to impossible to find good fish 'n' chips these days. The only reason I gave 4 stars right now and not 5 was because this was my first visit. I will be back, and if I find them to be consistent in quality of execution, I will bump up my score to give credit where it's due. Please keep up the great work! NOTE: Cash or debit only, they don't accept credit cards!
I had the lunch special haddock and chips, it was the perfect amount of food filled me up, the price was awesome the fish was cooked perfect and the fries were awesome! Will definitely be back soon!
Great batter on the fish, and fried perfectly. Great fries as well.
Great little place. The fish and mushy peas were spot on. The chips were adequate, I'm not sure why but chips on this side of the pond are just never quite right. Helpful staff and good prices. Recommended.
This used to be our go-to place for fish and chips but there's been a really noticeable drop in the quality of the food! We thought the first time it was a fluke (no pun intended). But the next time it was just as bad. We won't be coming back.
Great local fish and chip shop. Love the chips and batter reminds me of what you get in England.
Being English, the fish and chips are just as I expected. Will be going there again!
So disappointed...very very greasy. Had to blot with paper towels...many! Oil was maybe not hot enough. Usually really good.
Excellent fish and chips, almost as good as British ones. Since moving to Canada the hunt for good fish and chips has been on. Here the fish is well cooked and a good size. I eould prefer they provide skinless chips (fries) but these are excellent tasting as well.
Great food, lots of menu choices. Best fish & chips I've had in a long time. The only con I could say would be the baskets they serve your food in if you dine-in are difficult to eat from. Other than that the food is top notch.
Our family's favourite place to grab fish and chips! Generous portions, great battered fish and decently priced. We're happy to support this local establishment.
The BEST Fish and Chips in St Catharines!!! The staff is one of a kind , which make it an all around amazing experience ! Great food . Great service .
The food was amazing .my wife and i thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The fresh cut fries were awesome. The fish was cooked perfect. The batter was delicious and not greasy.we would for sure recomend this place to our friends. We will go back for sure.
Very generous guys ...order on time .
This place is great. The staff(cashier) was very friendly and knowledgeable. The fish was incredible. Wish they have bigger area for tables tho. Will definitely go back there.
