We purchased a clock right off the wall since we fell in love with it and the manager was amazing and let us take it home at a VERY reasonable price!! I've been to Pirate Chips a few times and overall the experience is usually pretty good! The food is the best part. I love how creative the menu is, especially with the desserts. The staff are usually quite outgoing and friendly although the last time we were there, our servers didn't really talk to us (besides the standard questions) and they didn't look very happy. Other than that, great restaurant, great location. One of the best places to eat in Nanaimo!

Very kitschy and fun place to bring the kiddos. The food is pretty good, with attractive daily specials. There is a small playhouse to entertain little ones. The decorations are great to look at and the servers are very attentive and engaging. Will come again!

What an awesome place! I had the Frybread Tacos with pulled pork and I'm pretty sure I had a near-spiritual experience. The deep-fried Nanaimo bar is a must! The staff are friendly, the decor is funky, and it's in an interesting area of town. 10/10!!

The menu is quite varied with a good selection of dishes for this establishment. They have some interesting choices, such as a peanut butter bacon burger, which I did not try, but will in the future. I felt it was a little cramped while seated inside, but not debilitating by any means. The place is clean and nothing seems to be falling apart. The overall atmosphere is very relaxed with plenty of pirate themed adornments. I'd recommend this place to almost anyone.

Fabulous experience. The service was loving and extremely friendly. The menu has great variety and accommodations for diners with limited diets and nutritional needs. The portion sizes make up for what can seem like slightly higher prices than one might expect. The gluten free batter was impressively good and the food was perfectly seasoned. Great music, decor, vinegar spray bottles, and hospitality from start to finish. We will 100% be back here next time we’re in town.

The fish here was very good. The Caesar salad was okay. Atmosphere was neat. Seems to be a decent value but there seems to be an emphasis on fried food. Fries were okay. Of note the vinegar comes from a spray bottle which is good for even distribution. Deep fried nanaimo bar for dessert was disappointing.

So I tried the peanut butter burger consisted of onion rings. Cheddar and mozzarella cheese bacon peanut butter lettuce pickles and tomato. Except I requested to have no tomato. Waiter was excellent. He recommended to put honey mustard on the bun. Honestly I tried it. It blew my fricking mind. Their milk shakes are to die for. I've had tons across Canada but this one is in my top 10. Service was fast thou is was slow at the hour we went. Fries are kinda gross tbh. But they have tonnnnssss of GREAT FOOD I also tried there deep fried mozzarella sticks and mac n cheese bites. Mouth Watertown gooey goodness. If you have HIGH peanut allergies not the place for you. But I highly recommend this place if your a tourist or simple looking to try something new. Batrooms are cleaner than I thought and so is the restaurant. Overall I'm happy to come back

Holy smokes! World-class service and beyond world-class food! The deep fried Nanaimo bar was out of this world! What a twist on a classic dessert that takes it to another level. And don't get me started on the fries! They're made using unique potatoes that are high fiber and low sugar, and wow! Best I've ever had. "If you don't want them, you can throw them into the garbage ". Mike the server said. Last week, my family came by Pirate Chips and orders some kinds of food. We were 7 people so the server - his name is Mike - suggested we should seat outside which there is one big table. That's ok, even I saw some empty tables inside. We were waiting for some minutes that is enough for me to take a nap. My wife seemed can't wait anymore because the outside cooled down, so she came inside to ask when the food is ready, and she continually waited. About next 15 minutes, my daughter came inside to ask my wife what happened. Subsequently, my wife asked the server to pack the food which finished, the others we would cancel. But he - Mike the server - said everything was almost done. Ok, and wait... Everyone outside started to run out of patience, and I woke up. I stepped inside to ask what was happening, and saw Mike brought out some bags. My wife asked him what did the bags contain. Answer to her question, Mike said: "Those are everything. If you don't want them, you can throw them into the garbage". His point was he saw my wife was unpleasant. Of course for the time we wait.!!! I suddenly asked him what did he say. He explained and apologized us. However, it was enough for us to said goodbye forever this restaurant. Nanaimo and Victoria are beautiful except one place or one guy.

We stopped in here for a quick bite and to try the deep fried Nanaimo bars. We were greeted warmly and able to get a table right away. Our server was friendly and the service was fast. The only thing we didn't love was we ordered the nachos and it was missing tomatoes (which was included in the ingredients list) and instead black olives and red onions were put on it which neither my partner or I like. It was still very tasty but we would have loved a heads up before the substitute was made. The Nanaimo bar dessert was amazing and totally worth the visit!!!! Thanks!

Don't usually leave reviews but this place was so disappointing given the good things I'd heard. Bland and flavourless, if these are the best chips in Nanaimo then god knows what everywhere else is serving. To top it off, we couldn't order one of the items we wanted as they didn't have the necessary ingredients in, and we were charged $55 for items totalling $40 (something which we didn't realise until after the fact). Would not recommend, must be better options around.

Amazing fish and chips... light, almost tempura batter. Really quite excellent! Fantastic friendly staff and management - they really made us feel welcome. Deep fried Nanaimo bars were good, but we were blown away by the "monkey brains ????." Who knew? Oh, they're avocado stuffed with shrimp and other goodies. Definitely a huge part of the local community and I can see why! We WILL be back.

Servers were friendly but, the food was terrible. EVERYTHING is deep fried and the prices are ridiculous. I paid 14 bucks for 3 chicken tenders with no side dish. The chilli fries were awful as well, the chilli was basically canned chilli all dry and crusty.

A lot of great ideas that sound really appetizing on paper for their menu however the execution is not really successful (things like buns on our burgers being cold and stale, batter on fish was mushy instead of crispy, bland fries). Service was good but the servers were yelling across the restaurant to each other about mopping the wet floor, which employee was late, etc so wasn't exactly a peaceful meal.

The Calamari is bar none the worst i've eaten in literally any restaurant anywhere, and to be fair i ordered it on two different occasions with the same disappointing results. I would liken it to eating cardboard, what baffles me is how a place that specializes in seafood can mess this up. Everything else on the menu is good but avoid the Calamari with extreme prejudice!

Every time we have to eat out, we choose Pirate chips. We've ordered differently every time and have never been disappointed. Our absolute favourites so far are the peanut butter bacon burger, the calamari, and of course the fish and chips. Don't even get me started on desserts!!!! The gluten free options are not only plentiful but also taste DELICIOUS. The service is top notch, fantastic waiters who are amazing with our young children. Very accommodating and understanding. The play area for kids inside is so great and the decor really adds to the experience.

Went in for the deep fried Nanaimo bar and was not disappointed. Came with plenty of whipped cream and ice cream. If you're sharing, get two because there is no way you'll want to settle with just one bite! Service was friendly with no complaints. If you like pirates, this place has it in spades. Can't wait to come back another day and give the fries a go. Recommended.

Halibut was a bit over priced, as well as dry. The milkshake was good ! Fries were a bit soggy. Overall the server was very cheerful and attentive, but it seemed like other customers were ordering their food and receiving it faster than us? Maybe just took a bit longer because it was halibut? Great ambience, great concept, great location, great expectations, but not so great a eating experience. My family and I visited here expecting heaven, but was not so tripped with food outcome. The sad thing is that a mention to the attendant brought on us some form of condemnation and anger. I am not sure if what we had was the standard menu, or if the chef on duty was the cause. I would not have a concern over the food taste, but I cannot forgive a rude attendant.

Really great fish and chips! The coleslaw was completely devoid of sauce which was disappointing. Our server was accommodating to our kid's weird requests and took good care of our needs. Nice patio for watching all the cars cruising around. Slight drawback is the adjacent bar has smokers coming out and smoking in the doorway which is basically on the patio. Still a good time.

So sad to hear this restaurant doesn’t find a need or a desire to follow public health orders to stop the spread of Covid 19 and claims that it’s discrimination. Even though the food is amazing and they are one of the few that offer gluten free dining I’ll probably never again support this restaurant and will be sad to see them go out of business. I live out of town and would order take out when I visit but because of their disregard I’ll no longer be giving my business to this restaurant take out or dine in.

Popped in by myself mid afternoon and had a fantastic meal. I don't recall what it was called on the menu, but I had a blue cheese and bacon burger. Was amazed when it came out to see a LARGE pile of crumbled danish blue slowly melting on top of the patty. Had to be a good 3 bucks or so just in cheese! The caesar salad was also great, topped with crumbled bacon and strips of fresh parm. After that and a pint of Blue Buck I was absolutely stuffed. Will be back for sure!

Fantastic pirate themed restaurant right near the Nanaimo harbour. The decorations are really cool and the atmosphere is fun. Small establishment and they still managed to put a childrens play area on one side. I guess a lot of young families go there. I had the Deep fried Nanaimo Bar, which was amazing. I highly recommend ordering it, but perhaps share it with one other person as it is a lot of calories.

Enhanced with its additional sidewalk cafe seating as well as we happened to come across this fine establishment on a Tuesday which currently offers a free, yes I said FREE kids menu on Tuesdays, which my son thoroughly enjoyed. If you're in the mood for some very tasty well-prepared food that does not necessarily fit into your diet plan then visit Pirate Chips you will not be disappointed. I highly recommend the peanut butter burger and the deep fried Nanaimo bar. Enjoy!

Easily accessible location on Front Street. Angela is a super friendly host, even met her young daughter Sailor. The pirate decorations inside and out are very colourful, reminded me of Disneyland. The pirate hanging from a rope inside is very realistic. Big bottle of tartar sauce is a real bonus, as I'm so used to shops cheaping out and giving only a few small packages of tartar sauce. Angela even suggested a way to save money; originally we were going to order 2 pcs of cod + extra pc for $5, but it turned out for 4 people it was a better deal to spend $1.45 more for AYCE. I guess Angela liked talking to my wife, as she even comped us a free dessert. I haaarrghtedly recommend Pirate Chips for a friendly and fun atmosphere.

He was funny and really made an extra effort to make it a fun and unique experience for the kids..lots of gluten free choices (the gluten free cod was out of this world!) I would say that everything here is pretty good. Nothing amazing but nothing disappointing. I'm sure there's a thing or two you would find to be more or less that but overall, it's how I'd describe it simply. Like their peanut butter bacon burger is decent! It's kind of a gimmicky burger and popular for that reason, but it's not bad by any means. Quite good. But it's served on a very basic bun and basic fries. Tater tots are a worthwhile upgrade if you're feeling it. But only if you're really feeling it. So, nothing really fancy here. It's like pub grub with a pirate's twist, if you will. Clever dishes with some unusual options among the expected ones. Refreshing enough atmosphere with nice big windows to enjoy the daylight from the edge of downtown, a little bit away from the commotion on the busier days.

Being our first time in Nanaimo we decided to try this restaurant after reading some of the reviews and well being totally fair our experience was a little under whelming. Though the service was very good my burger was grilled to the point where all i could taste was charred meat. The chilli cheese fries were ok but they needed more chilli and salt and alot less cumin. That was all i could taste so I tried to drown it out with ketchup but it didn't work. My wife told me that her chowder was delicious but the prawn salad was again a little underwhelming. Neither of us are food critics but we know what tastes good and unfortunately we wont be returning to Pirate Chips on future visits. We hope that your experience is better than ours.

Used to be my favourite fish place. Last couple times . . not so much. Way less fries, and even got one piece of fish so dry that I couldn't cut into it. They did replace it, but this would never have happened 2 years ago. The tuna salad is still very good as is the calamari most of the time. It's just the consistency of quality that is lacking

WOW to say I'm disappointed would be an understatement! $26 for double fish and chips - $21 for a single fish and chips. WAY OVER PRICED!!!!! Do not eat here!!! Way better fish and chips for 1/2 the price on the waterfront. Rude staff - when we went to seat our selves outside and server said you can NOT have that table it's is taken. Then waited and laughed and said just kidding. I Can't Stop Thinking About Tony

Are there two different restaurants in town?? That's the only explanation I can find for the rave reviews vs. my experiences at this place. I went once last year and was served the driest, most overcooked piece of cod, which also had something hard that I bit down on halfway through. The fries were bland and overcooked as well. This year I thought I'd give it one more try in case I'd just hit a bad night. I tried salmon this time - BIG mistake. It was as dry and overcooked as the last one, with an uninspired drizzle of what had to be (cheap) store-bought BBQ sauce on it. The fries were as bad as last time. The ketchup tasted like an off-brand so I ordered some gravy to try and make them edible - no luck, the gravy was thin and just as flavorless as everything else on the table. The sticky, unwashed table, mind you. I wouldn't mind so much except a) COVID is a thing, so aren't things supposed to be getting washed more regularly? and b) the building was empty when I entered, so even if you aren't actually doing extra cleaning, it should still have been a clean table. Fool me once, etc. I'm super disappointed that so many people are having great food and experiences at this place. But there's way too many other places in town where great fish and chips, friendly service, and cleanliness all exist in the same place, so I'll never know if third time would have been the charm for this one.

For years ive been told to eat here. Yes never again. Everything is over priced. The bathrooms are disgusting. The food is terrible. Floors are covered in greese and the service was poor. So many infractions. Wait just saw a cook eat fries while cooking. Maybe a good place if your drunk.

I just ordered take out from here for the first time tonight and I must say I wasn't impressed at all... Not only do they blatantly disregard the vaccination mandate for dine-in, the cod was mush (obviously frozen), the fries were OK, the coleslaw was barely dressed, and the gravy was just salty water... Was an amazing experience! The owner is hand on, incredibly friendly and this small business deserves a visit! The monkey brains were so tasty! The all you can eat fish and chips are a bonus. I had the great timing to visit Pirate Chips with a friend on all you can eat fish and chips Wednesday. Service was lovely and the initial portion was quite large. Three big pieces of fish on a bed of fries with tasty coleslaw. My friend had the regular two piece which was still plenty of food. The moment I was into the third piece the server was asking if I wanted more. The temptation was great but I was saving room for the deep fried Nanaimo bar. I'm glad I did but sorry I shared it. That was lunch, and I couldn't eat the rest of the day.

Underwhelming - small pieces of fish for the burger, a bunch of little bits and pieces of fries, table was sticky, server was not friendly, only one high chair for the whole restaurant, which was being used when we were there. I appreciated the kids playhouse, crayons and toys. But the place could use a good cleaning and friendlier staff.

Edit, Dec 2018: Had to downgrade this from five stars to three. Went there this evening as the power was out at our house. I understand they were busier than expected for a Thursday night, but the waitress didn't let us know the would be a long wait for food. The restaurant didn't look very busy when we came in. One of our party had to leave as soon as her food came. The real deal breaker, though, was that our food was terrible! The fries were DRY like a desert, sucked the moisture right out of your mouth. The gluten free batter on the fish had no flavour whatsoever, not even a little salt. It was like eating a mouthful of textured nothing. I was very disappointed after the wait! April 2018: Fun quirky atmosphere, plus deep fried everything! They also have gluten-free options for their fish & chips and calamari. Very good!

Update 2021: They're anti-maskers, anti-science. Hard pass. 2019 review: For takeout it was pretty solid. Cod and chips, I and oyster burger ordered. Everything was delicious, but the batter was on the oily and denser side. Fries were awesome. Went in at opening 11am and they didn't have the pirate chest? Appetizer platter with their top sellers. They didn't have the ingredients ready. Kind of ridiculous to not run your business with proper prep time so your able to serve the full menu at opening.

Walking downtown Nanaimo, happened upon this pirate themed gem. We had our 1st Poutine????????, and ???? wrapped scallops. The scallops were SO fresh and delicious ????. We came for the gluten free options. However the gluten free fish and chips were mediocre. The batter just didn't get crispy at all. But the sizes were gigantic and we were stuffed. The gluten free s'mores on the otherhand were divine. Also the hours on the website and the hours posted on their building were not the same. Website was correct they opened at 3.

I'm sorry to say Pirate Chips that our experience was not good. we called in an order for take out, 2 of your 1 PC halibut and chips. we were taking it home to the north end. When we got it home and opened it up the fries were not fully cooked therefore being soggy. And in my fries was a huge uncooked potatoe wedge. the fish batter was chewy not crispy. The coleslaw had very little if any dressing on it. For a cost of $47.00 ( I know halibut is more expensive) I would expect a better quality dinner. I want to support local but hard to do when only getting a mediocre meal.

Ordered a basic burger with sweet potato fries for take-out, and I cant really say I was too impressed. Pretty boring, my fries were soft and floppy, the dip was very tasteless and my tastebuds didn't jump for joy. The staff was very friendly and quick, however I just wasnt too impressed in food quality. I always give second chances, so my next trip will be a dine-in experience and I will update my review accordingly. :)

They advertise gluten free but be careful if you have celiac. The first time i ordered it was ok, i had the 2 piece cod and chips. The second time i ordered however, they gave me the complete wrong order. I ordered takeout and specified celiac and gluten free. When i was waiting for my order at the front i noticed the server pouring beers and having beer all over his hands as it dripped down the sides of the glass and left a beer trail through the restaurant. He then went to bag "my order" with beer covered hands. They then gave me the non gluten free fish and chips. Luckily i knew what the gluten free batter looked like or i would have eaten it and been very sick. My $30 order went in the trash. When i informed them of what happened there was no offer of refund or the meal i actually ordered.

Healthy options from a fish and chips restaurant seems like a tall order, but I was very surprised at the quality and great keto meal I got. The salad was a really great spring mix, the coleslaw on my lettuce wrap burger was made with Apple Cider Vinegar and the burger itself was soooo juicy. Surprisingly, I felt like this was the best meal we had on the island during our weekend trip. Obviously, others love this place as well, because it was hopping! Love that they don't ask for vaccine passports. Vaccinated or not, that is a terrible affront to civil liberties. Super friendly staff. Can't recommend highly enough.
