Feb 28 2021 update
I've come back to Sustainable Marine a couple times for curb side pickup during COVID, and now a couple times after in store restrictions were lifted, so this is worth an update.
First, I finally have a blue/green chromis in my tank, from SM. It's healthy and has a good appetite, and swimming around the entire tank which was my reason for getting a (relatively) peaceful damsel in the first place.
I had also picked up a Hanna ALK tester, which was giving me highly inaccurate info (4.3 DKH, but 8.# on Red Sea and API) I assumed I had somehow fouled my reagent. Took the whole unit in, and Ian ran side by side tests, and got similar results to mine, and sent me off with a new kit. Got home, tested the water, and found it 2.1 lower than my other kits. Took it in, and after getting accurate results was walked through how they were obtained (no syringe tip, meniscus placement). I haven't tested my water yet, but after having my "gun shy" fears allayed I'm sure I can get it working.
* Original review
I've been in a couple times over the past few months, and every visit has been a disappointment.
When I was looking to build my first saltwater tank, I went in looking for lights. He tried to push the Fluval Flex, with one of the selling points being that when I was ready to upgrade or get out of the hobby, I would have no trouble selling it... So I bought a system off Kijiji, which also included a heater, plus skimmer, plus stand, for the same price as the Fluval Flex which didn't include any of that, and was double the size.
The only problem? I still needed lights, so I bought them off Amazon.
Went in looking for fish, and eventually noticed some had large, presumably infected gashes on their sides (picture). I asked if they were for sale, and he said they were. Came back the next day and a couple had already died.
Came in to ask to rent a spectrometer to test my new lights and see what the PAR levels were in my tank, was told to just watch a BRS youtube video instead.
Came in to buy copepods as they had previously said that they culture their own. Was told to buy them online elsewhere (So I did, Copepod.ca )
I wouldn't recommend you shop here, unless you just want to grab an item off the shelf, pay and go, but at that point why even go to a store?
The one time I had a good experience was when I spoke with (I believe his name was) Tim, not only did he find me some nice new additions to the tank (the gorgonian is doing beautifully, even with the new hermits using it as a jungle gym), he also gave me a great deal of info and related experience with different coral and fish that I wanted to get at some point.
I'd recommend Tim, just not Sustainable Marine, visits in general have been at best mediocre, if not entirely unpleasant.
