Probably the most "Asian" of supermarkets. Brings me memories of markets in Malaysia or Thailand. Strong smell, a bit untidy and unclean-but one can say its a part of the charm or token of authenticity. Cheap produce. Difficult to tell what items on shelves are sometimes, but able to get some items that are otherwise difficult to find, such as sweet potato instant noodles. I don't eat the barbeque but it does smell really good, and there are counters with fresh fish. Has the best rice ball desserts (mochi?) that I've tried in the refrigerated section.

Excellent grocery in Downtown Kitchener, wide range of asian vegetables, fruits, and groceries. The cleanliness is pretty good, but the staff should sweep the floors in the produce section as there are leaves everywhere. Warning: There is a strong smell of fish as soon as you walk through the main entrance of the store, its really strong. They have a takeout section for purchasing cooked meats. The meat section of the store is very organized. Overall, I recommend New City Supermarket to anyone has never been in a Chinese grocery store before

Used to love coming here, but I've started feeling like I'm not wanted in the store. The lady that rings in my products ALWAYS throws them, bruising my fruit and trie's to rip me off by ringing the produce in for more than advertised. Just downright rude, and I'm certain it's because I'm white, she'll be laughing and joking with the people ahead of me, but when it comes to my turn, she's rude, unfriendly and won't even look in my direction. Being rude to me I can look past, but throwing the products and slamming them on the counter I cannot let go, am I not a paYong customer? I used to shop here often, but now I go to B & T because I'm treated like a person.

Decent meat and protein options in fresh and frozen as well as some of the herb and veg/fruit selection. Store is relatively clean. Some complain of the fish smell bit they do have a lot of fresh and frozen fish so that is to be expected.

Normally come here to buy all my produce, never have any problems. Except for the other day, bought a little cheesecake from their dairy aisle, brought it home and it was coated in thick green mold. Low and behold the expiration date was April of this year! That is so unacceptable! I know I may be at partial fault for not checking the date on the back but if you are a grocer that is going to sell dairy items you should be checking the best before dates before selling it. I am so disgusted, and for $11.99 I am even more upset because for that kind of price things shouldn’t be expired! I would bring it back but left the store without a receipt. Will never buy from their dairy aisle again and just a word of warning to anyone to be sure to check the dates on this item in particular.

Right in the heart of downtown, but still has a lot of parking at the back (getting there is a bit confusing and the entrance/exit can only fit one car, but still a lot of space to park your car). They had really cheap drumsticks and for a small store there was a lot of stuff in there. Not everything was cheap of course, but definitely worth your time to at least have a look around

One of the few places in KW area to get authentic Asian food (imported). This place is not the cleanest and typically smells like fish due to the butcher section that has meat displayed openly. The setup is actually better than places in Asia but considering this is Canada, I would hope so :) They have a fresh produce section but make sure you know what you're looking for as it's not typically labelled well. If you want a clean Asian store go to T&T but sometimes some items can only be found here.

For South East Asian groceries this is the only fix you'll get. Forget B&T down the road, they're a joke. T&T in Waterloo is mostly catering to Chinese. While it may not be the cleanest, it definitely is welcomed. Prices are low and quality is medium.

I'm new to the K-W area, and was concerned I wouldn't be able to find a store like the one I was used to, but one visit convinced me I had nothing to worry about. This is a large, well stocked, traditional Chinese grocery store. It has everything I was looking for, and more. The store is clean, and the staff are helpful. Don't have much option but to shop here for Chinese grocery. They do have a good selection of vegetables that are common in chinese dish but other places do not sell. The smell of fresh fish, meats, etc is also not the friendliest welcoming element here even though fresh food is a good thing. Their prices are also competitive. Great store! The fish and meat counter can’t be beat for freshness. It is a Chinese grocery store, so you will see and smell certain things that you won’t see at Zehrs. Unlike some other people on here, I see this as a plus. For example, when you buy a fish, they gut it and remove the scales right in front of you. It’s not pre-packaged in foam. Live fish are literally swimming in tanks underneath the counter. Away from the maritimes, it’s as fresh as you can get. Because of this it smells different, yes. Also, not all of the staff speak English (again, for me, that’s also part of the fun). But it has the freshest and cheapest food of all grocery stores in the area, and lots of different and new ingredients to choose from. I love shopping here!

To whom it may concern. I would like to post this message for people who go to the New City Supermarket located at this location. Be aware of your grocery bill before you leave because it happen to me three times already! First time, I bought a bag of chicken bone, the owner charge me almost $15 and I came back to complain and the owner thought it was chicken wings. Second time, I did not bought the green onion, but he charge me 1 bunch of green onions on my bill. Third time. he charge me the beef flank for $34, instead of $24 which the tag was stick to the bag. I gag every time I walked in this store because of the rancid smell, but used to shop there if I was in the neighbourhood for the cheaper vegetables and a few treats from my days of living in Asia that I got nostalgic for. The fact that I could never get any help in English looking for items I overlooked. But on Friday this past week, I bought a soy dessert product that I did not realize was extremely out of date, more than 2 weeks, (never occured to me to check that because there is always lots of traffic in this store), and remember now the cashier glancing in that direction of the sell-by date when ringing the item through. Conveniently I was never given a receipt but did not think anything of it til I got home and found the soy product was so far past inedible it was not even funny. Naturally I could not prove when I bought it plus it is miles from my home. I will NEVER shop there again.

Being the closest Asian market to us, it's not bad. It gets the job done. Limited varieties and it's always hit or miss, depending on what you go in there for. Today they had no jalapenos. The old ladies seem to constantly be pissed for one reason or another. The guys are usually much better and more friendly. Their vegetable selections were nice and fresh for the most part. Same goes for the limited herb selection. I was very happy to find that they sold their sweet basil and another longer herb together. Both of these are great to garnish pho. All in all, you'll get at least half of what you go in there for. And there's a good chance that you'll find suitable substitutes for most of the other half.

Unfortunately this place is pretty much the only choice in KW. The smell is quite bad when you walk in and the public health inspection report confirms that this place isn't really clean. Search for this store on the Region of Waterloo 'checkit' for details. Whenever we end up doing something in the Toronto area there's always a stop at the nearest T&T for the stuff you can't really get at Sobey's/Real Canadian/Fresh Co.

For a long time there was no other choice for finding Asian foods in the Kitchener/Waterloo region and this was the sole reason I shopped there. They stocked a lot of the foods I was familiar with from Asian grocery stores in Toronto. The prices were good and the produce selection was varied, but it's very dirty and the staff are extremely unfriendly. They are racist against caucasians, blacks, brown people and most asians. Had a weird experience where a customer had dropped a jar onto the floor and the produce guy was freaking out. I agreed it was going to be hard to clean up and he proceeded to scream at me for no reason and I still don't know what he was on about. I tried to buy produce that ended up mispriced and was shouted at again, and then told I had to pay a two dollar surchage on orders under $8. I know they only charge it for orders under $5, I've been there enough times. I wouldn't touch any of the meats with a ten foot pole, you can smell the bleach on the chicken. Really awful dump of a place, can't wait for T&T to open up!

I was looking for a few very specific ingredients and could only find one of the four -- pretty disappointing considering the size of the store. The cleanliness seems to have improved over how it was years ago but the store still stinks like old meat and fish. Shelves are greasy and sticky. I prefer the Waterloo Central Supermarket up by the University of Waterloo. It's much cleaner and doesn't smell at all. Although the produce selection is far less.

I've been shopping here for 4 years. But after what happened today, I won't go back anymore. I bought two canned quail eggs this morning, the price showed 2 for $5 but when we checked out, the system showed one was $2.99. I told the owner (she was cashier today) she told us I must have picked the wrong item (there is only one brand canned quail eggs there). She refused to give me a refund and also didn't want to check the price. The more ridiculous thing was she told told me that a machine won't lie but people would! I've had price mistakes twice here already, and this time they called me a lair. I rather go farther to B&T or T&T instead. They even aren't worth one star.

We bought “fresh” fish from here. When we got home, a couple of them smelled rotten and looked smashed. Not only could this make someone really SICK, it was disgusting. I called to explain and instead of handling the situation with common courtesy, he laughed and hung up the phone. I tried calling back and there was no answer. Maybe the health department should be aware if they’re selling fish that has gone bad. I’m just glad I noticed, otherwise we could have ended up in the hospital from consuming it. Never shopping here again.

Something smells fishy, but it might just be the huge selection of fish. There is nothing fishy about the great selection of specialty goods for sale at this location. The basil seed and white gourd beverage was certainly something to write home about, and the aloe was exceptionally ripe; perfect for hair hydration. All in all definitely worth the visit, as long as you can handle the smell of the sea.

Very good selection of Asian groceries, including vegetables, fruits and other items you will not find in traditional supermarkets. The produce section is quite good and pricedy fairly. There is also a small area that offers Ready-to-Eat meals. The fish and meats section seemed very fresh as well, although the aroma does permeate the rest of the store quite strongly. Don't expect a lot of customer service. Payment is by cash and debit card only.

I have been going there for a few years now and the last visit was the 1st time that I was treated in a friendly manner. Very poor customer skills. It is very difficult to get help for English-speaking people. It is almost like they do not want you to come in their store unless you speak their language. Not a very hygienic place. I usually only buy prepackaged things from there. A lot of cross contamination going on so you have to be very careful to protect yourself.

I had an extremely bad experience today (Sat , Sept 8th 2018). I went to buy fish , ordered it and asked to have it cleaned and cut. The guy at the counter did it but while packing he dropped the clean pieces on the floor. The floor where was standing was filled with water and it had dirt , meat , fish waste etc. He picked the pieces from the floor , quickly washed it under the tap and gave it to me. I politely refused to take it and said it was unhygienic. He threw the packet into the garbage and continued with next customer. I told him that I came to buy fish and he said "you didn't take it. You can go". He said I can speak with the manager at cash counter. I went and spoke with lady at the counter and she didn't help. The fish was worth $9.86. The guy himself knew that it was unhygenic and that's why he threw it away. And he refused to pack fresh one for me. I have been shopping there since 2013. Not anymore. Not going to that place ever again.

Great place to shop for asian foods. They have a ton of variety for fish and meats. They even have a cooked meat station where they sell cooked pork and duck. I went to buy ingredients for hot pot and they had everything I needed. Great selection of green vegitables and the staff were polite. If you plan on using debit, it has to be more then $10. The store isn't as crowded as most asian markets in the area so there's room to walk and everything is laid out nicely. Will definitely go back again. They also sell asian cooking utensils if you want a more traditional approach to eating or cooking your food.

I don't hate New City Supermarket, It is actually an interesting store to walk around. But I give it 1 star because when I was here a few years ago, they had an open bucket of RAW CHICKEN for customers to take. Customers were sicking their bare hands into the bucket of raw chicken as if it was fruit and then putting it in plastic bags and continuing their shopping. Needless to say many of them handled other products in the store, or money to pay the cashier (money which would then be given as change to other customers). So the trail of salmonella is inevitable. I would never buy anything from here because I do not want salmonella, but walking around the store if fun, especially if you're interested in East Asian culture. I'm happy this supermarket exists in Kitchener, I just wish it took health and cleanliness more seriously.

I love how cheap a lot of Korean products are. Waterloo Central Supermarket is very pricy on the other hand. It does smell bad but I can deal with it to save quite a lot of money! Also, just be careful to check the expiration date of products here since some products has passed its expiration date by a couple of months.

Topical local Asian supermarket, it used to be one of only asian market around the area til T&T comes in. It doesn't have a lot of things anymore compare to before, smells like fish and meat. Things are expensive unless on certain sale so know your prices! It should probably be noted that they actually won't sell you meat if you don't buy a lot (me being alone) even though the price is per lb. Buying vegetables depends on your luck, sometimes it's nice quality and sometimes it's stale. Only thing I like about this place is they have really delicious crispy skin BBQ pork usually on Friday and weekends (come early, around noon or bit after!)
