For all its charm unfortunately the wild hit and miss nature of my experience here lands it back at 3 stars. Sometimes it's pretty good, other times it's so bad it's hard to describe. I've had takeout so greasy it was basically inedible, my batter was so oily it was sliding on the plate like a skating rink. How do you let that happen? That's not right at all! The batter should be crisp and fine and compliment the fish, not drown it in grease and batter. Ugh But again, sometimes it tastes perfectly fine and it isn't dripped through the bag in my carry-out. I feel like I need to go by here more than a few times I year so I understand the pattern, maybe a bad chef or bad shift, I have no idea.

If you've got a hankerin' for fish 'n' chips, there is nothing better than Shady Rest. I spent many years growing up in England and not since then have I had anything remotely close to the classic news paper wrapped Fish and Chips from those days. Shady Rest takes me back there every time. Try the fish burger for something different!

I am tempted to deduct a star for location or the lack of accepting credit cards, but I can't: the food and service is too good. The people there are incredibly friendly and the food is spectacular. Probably some of the best Fish and Chips in town and easily the best when it comes to Fish and Chips specialty locations. The other menu items are alright but I recommend the Halibut.

I guess this place must have changed hands so I thought I would give it a try. As a food professional I've prepared more servings of fish and chips over the years than I care to remember. An honest opinion ,,, I would never have served anyone an order of fish and chips similar to what was served to me at Shady Rest. Disgustingly greasy, almost inedible and I was really surprised at the very small portions of fish covered with batter that was served. Sorry but I won't go back there and unfortunately I've heard similar comments.

Shady Rest is a piece of Kelowna history, steeped in tradition and an excellent place to get a quick bite to eat. They make it fresh, and pack it in newsprint, and it is consistently good. Bike parking rating: 2.5 out of 5 There are several places to lock up your bike, but none are great. It's either the outdoor seating or the gas meter. The place is small enough that you could safely lock your bike to itself, and just keep an eye on it.

This is probably the best fish and chips I've had and by far the best thing I have eaten while here in Kelowna the last several days. The portions were generous (pictured here is a 3 piece cod with chips + 2 prawns) and the price was more than reasonable ($23!!!) since the meal was split between two people. The tartar sauce was also really good! I love that the meal came wrapped in newspaper and the lady taking our order was energetic and friendly. This place seems to have been around for a while and it's not hard to see why. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area.

First time visiting. We ordered two 2-piece cod and fries (take-out due to COVID-19), but there were no bike racks on site, and in the bag there was no ketchup for the fries, no salt or pepper, no vinegar, no cutlery, no napkins, and tartar sauce enough for one of us. Very disappointing!

We used to love their fish and chips. But it's pricey for the portion size (especially if you take out) and recently, we find their french fries are almost un-eatable! Mostly black yucky spots on them. You're eating 3 small pieces of fish and at least you want to be able to eat the fries without picking at them so you can get full.

We heard a lot of hype about this place and wanted to try it out. We picked up halibut and chips with shrimp. The shrimp was the best part, everything was way too battered though and super greasy. I ended up being really sick afterwards I think due to the amount of grease. Quick turn around time for our order though! Prices are good too.

This place is under new management. Fish and chips are not the same as before. Fish is greasy and tastes bland. Tastes and looks like they changed the receipe. Batter is completely different, barely holds the fish together. Very dissapointed. I've been going there since a kid. New management has messed up the taste. I won't be going there again.

Everytime I get food from here, I wonder why I do not eat here more often. The food is always made fresh and served hot. There is a good portion of food. I had two pieces of cod and chips and my girlfriend got the cod burger. We both enjoyed the meal.

Before heading back to Calgary, I looked up Fish and Chips - there was a great comment - "Best Chips I have had in a long time", so that is where I am going. When I got there, it was a British Fish and Chip Shop - Bonus. Coming from the UK, it is hard to get really good Fish and Chips. So I ordered the Haddock Combo - 3 pieces of fish , 3 prawns and chips - then they said it will take 20 mins - what ? I asked do you have Chip Shop Curry ? No - Do you have Mushy Peas ? No. Only Tartare Sauce. Anyway, I got my package and left to eat on the road. After opening, I can see why it tooks 20 mins - dark, thick batter and really greasy - it was disgusting. I was not wasting it, but the only way I could eat it was take off all the batter. Chips were ok, but nothing to do a review on. Tartare was disgusting as well. It was expensive as well. So, this should have a been called a Canadian Chain Fish and Chip Shop as there was nothing British about it. At least they have the right name - Shady. It definitely was a Shady Fish and Chip Shop. As they say in the UK - "Proper Shady Mate" Purchase at your own peril.

We walked in and the staff was less than friendly. The fish was over battered, really over cooked on the outside, under cooked inside and the fish was very skinny. This place was really good at one point years ago but not worth the stop anymore. Lord chumley's or the table are much better options.

Been going there for many many years and it was always the best! Was there tonight after about 8 month and found quite a change. Same owners but it appears the people on didn't really care. Tried to make conversation with the girl and she just ignored my comments. Found the portions are substantially smaller, fries were overdone and had to inspect each fry for black spots. The halibut piece was very small and too hard. Next time I want fish and chips will probably go to C-Lovers or Lord Chumleys. Great staff and food is great.

I wish I could add one more ⭐️ to Shady Rest but I just couldn't. For one, my 2-piece Cod were thickly battered. They were well fried though and they definitely tasted awesome in my tongue. A bit too greasy in my opinion but they were still acceptable. Now the chips (aka fries) is something I want to object. I think the fries was not as crispy as I expected it to be. I felt like perhaps it had been precooked before the order was place; or maybe it was just the way they cook the fries like that. "Mediocre" would be the right word to describe the fries. Fries aside, the overall experience was exceptional nevertheless. I loved the classic, ancient atmosphere of the restaurant—fits well their name "shady" haha. The price was barely justified in my opinion: $14.35 + tip for 2-piece Cod + Chips (tax included). I also kinda wished the portion was slightly bigger for the price. TL;DR I think Shady Rest is worth the dine! And yes, the exterior does look quite shady in a lot of ways (no pun intended) ????

I love this place, but today it gets 1 star because I was rudely turned away by an employee 40 minutes before closing. They refused to take my order and explained with attitude that they were "too busy." Very disappointed as it was a specially requested dinner for my grandmother. :(

Very good tasty prawns fish is delicious. The batter is so good. Very small if you want a quick bite or take out. Go try it. Went back this week August Still delicious. My husband in is fussy and he loves it. My sister came from Scotland last summer and loved it. So anyone who says a bad review doesn't deserve to be there. So don't waste their time serving them. So delicious. Add a bit more chips to an order is all I say.

Also the best coleslaw ever came from a chicken place back home that closed nearly 20 years ago, i have searched and searched for a comparable taste but never got close.. until today and its every bit as good as my old chicken place.. kudos all around. I'm not much of one to write reviews. But this had to be said. We spent $32 on 3 pieces of over cooked batter and under cooked fries. Tartar sauce which is typically amazing at these small family run restaurants, but the tartar sauce here was definitely just mayo and relish. The absolute worst fish and chips we've ever had. Well batter and chips. Cuz we only had a sliver of fish amongst the batter.

Went here for dinner while travelling for work. The fish was light and flakey, battered well and not too greasy. Chips were nice and crisp and went with the Malt Vinegar very well. Very impressed with this little spot. Best fish and chips I've had in many years.

Had the cod because they had no halibut. Was the worst fish and chips I have ever eaten. It was all batter and overcooked garbage, and pretty skimpy on the fries. You would think potatoes cost more than the fish at how little there was packed in a greasy newspaper. Had to wait almost 45 minutes. The building is a disgrace and very unclean premises. Dont waste your time!!!!

Shady Rest has been in Kelowna now for over 70 years. I had grown up here and driven past it all my life, only today eating there for the first time. The building is old, shabby, and ugly inside and out. I find it charming, and how it looks is unimportant. What is important is the fish, the batter has the best flavor of any fish and chips I've ever tasted. It's light, crispy, and delicious. The fish is quite nice as well and the chips are good quality, and fried fresh and hot. The prices are very reasonable as well.

I've heard a lot of good reviews about this place so we decided to give it a try, and it was a huge disappointment. VERY small portions of greasy, thick caked fish and greasy fries. I couldn't finish it. It also looked very dark so I wonder if the grease was just old. Either way, we won't be buying there anymore.

Fantastic! The new owners have brought this place back to life! Lived here 19 years and last time I biked over to Shady Rest it was same nice shady nook by a stream but now even warmer service, very fast and so perfectly prepared! My husband thought I brought halibut when it was still the usual cod:) I LOVE how they still super wrap each meal in newspaper; old style and friendly packaging, easy on the environment:) I placed the meals in my insulated bag and biked home hoping the temp would stay consistent and just cant say enough how much we enjoyed our meals this time! Thank-you Shady Rest for making our favorite comfort dish fabulous again!!!

Drove from West Kelowna and managed to get there for take out 10mins before closing to have them close the door and tell me they were closed. I was calling for a half hour to place a takeout order and no answer. When I showed up not a customer in sight. Horrible service! Seems strange to turn away business these days.
