We booked a fish hut for a Sunday in February.
This place apparently had good reviews in the past. It must have gone downhill.
When we paid, we didn't get a receipt. There was no agreement or waiver or anything, we were just given a bucket of minnows and put on a ATV thing to go out on the ice.
As we were being driven to the huts, we were pulled over by a Conservation Officer. He said he could have fined us for not wearing helmets. We weren't given helmets by the owner, and he never said anything about it when we got in the vehicle. He waived the $125pp fine which is good.
The fish hut was in poor condition. there was a propane heater on a bench, but no real ventilation in the hut save the door, which we kept open to avoid CO poisoning. The driver turned it on and left, and never told us how to work it in case it shut off, sputtered, or whatever.
The fishing itself was fine. I caught an old lure, and we released some minnows, so I guess we fished in reverse! We weren't expecting to catch anything, because we're beginners. People near us caught lots and lots using the minnows as bait.
When it was time to go back, the driver pulled up with an enclosed trailer that looked like a fish hut on 2 wheels. I assume this was to get around requiring helmets. Ironically, this felt like a much less safe ride, given that the wagon-hut was also not very well made.
Once we got back to our resort (we stayed at the Briars, which I totally recommend), we saw that they offered their own ice fishing excursions. Ha. Well, we'll know better for next time.
