Now the firm gets a rating of 4.2 out of 5 and this score is based on 127 reviews.
As you can see it reaches an opinions average is good, and it's based on a very large number of feddbacks, so we can be quite sure that the valuation is quite faithful. If there are many people who bothered to evaluate when they've done well, it works.
You know that we don't usually bother to give feddbacks when these are good and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or issue...
This Fish Shop belongs to the category of Fast food restaurant.
Great food, greater service, and unbelievably cheap prices.
Good food if you just want fish and chips. Very good service.
I liked the deep fried clams and fries.
Unpretentious quaint and very decent prices. Very good fish and chips Hits the spot nicely. Stay away from all the bars downtown. Gives one a reason to explore the Hydrostone neighborhood.
This place has been a neighborhood fixture since forever. It's only gotten better since Lucien took over about a decade ago. The food is simple and good. The service is great. Just get yourself a two piece and you'll be happy.
Excellent fish and chips! Service was very friendly and welcoming.
Would love to review the food, but I wasn’t even given a chance to order. You can’t select toppings for your baked potato on skipthedishes, so I called hoping to ask how to add sour cream and a bit of cheese (for an additional fee of course) only to be told they won’t add extras and there was no manager to request if this was possible even. You can get sour cream with the mozzarella sticks, so I’m not sure why you can’t order some on the side if you’re willing to pay. Anyways, was told they wouldn’t take my order, so first time trying to order but won’t bother to try again. Pity.
Nice atmosphere, great food and friendly staff!
Best fish and chips in metro
Best fish and chips in HRM.
Good service , good fish. Fries are okay.
My god their poutine! The cheese curds actually squeak on your teeth like the traditional Quebecois curds! Their fish and chips batter is great, not too overbearing either. They look small, so I ordered two and had to take the other piece home because I was full. More for later! The cook came out to serve us and did it in a really fun way too. Smiles all around!
We were looking for a good fish and chip shop in Halifax. Friends recommended a few places to us and those places were disappointing (frozen fish, bland batter etc). Willman’s (which we found through some googling) was anything but disappointing. In fact, this place was amazing. We are pretty picky with our fish and chips, and the cod tongue and sea food platter exceeded all expectations. The fish was fresh and delicious. The batter was well seasoned and there was just the right amount of it (we got lightly battered fish). Would absolutely return here. This place saved our quest for a perfect local chippie.
Yummy fish and chips - one of the favourites we've found.
Light batter. Haddock cooked perfectly
Food was great. Very fresh. Only observation is that we ordered ahead via phone to avoid waiting in line. Waited the suggested 20 min but when I arrived the food prep hadn't started yet. So it was nice and hot. Under old rules wasn't a big deal but wanted to reduce contact and time in restaurant.
Great first time there but it will not be my last
Ordered fired seafood combo for 2 and coleslaw. My favorite is fried clams, never had it before and it was impressive fresh and yummy. Coleslaw is soooooooo good too.
Amazing fish and chips. Highly recommended
The best clams
Extremelt overpriced. Tiny portions. Service was good.
I am perfectly full and content. Best meal I've had in a long time! I ordered the mussels and zucchini fries and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg for great quality Nova scotian seafood. Also it came pretty fast to my table on a Saturday!
Everyone says they have the best fish and chips in town. Everyone is right!! Affordable, delicious, great service, huge servings, and made to order but super fast.
I love their lightly breaded fish.
Consistently good seafood, reasonable prces
Awesome fish and chips!!
I had haddock tips and fries and they were fantastic. I will go again.
Dine in
Got takeout. Batter on the fish and scallops was soft, scallops felt soggy (not to mention a ‘large’ is like 6 scallops). No tartar sauce or ketchup included. Takeout boxes were falling apart. Do not waste your money here.
Very tasty! Only thing is not really a good place to go if you have allergys.
Really tasty food and even during a supper rush on a Saturday, the food came super fast and the staff was amazing! Definitely worth the wait!
It wasn't as good as I remember but it's not bad.
The light battered fish and chips is my favorite in Halifax.
Calamari and the clams were tough and rubbery. Not pleasant. No water offered; had to be purchased. For 3 people 80.00 for inedible meal.
Best fish and chips in Halifax
Best fish & chops in the city hands down.
Delicious fish and chips. Mussels were amazing as well.
We got the 3 piece fish and chips with cole slaw and mussels. Everything was tastey and the portions were generous. Willman's is a good place to eat when you're on a budget. I'd definitely return!
Awesome food, service and staff!
Very pricey and the batter hasn't got A lot of fish in it. The taste is good the chips are good.
Lucien Nehme is the worst restaurant owner is Halifax. This guys staff turnover should tell you enough. I've heard him yelling at his staff like a 5 year old on a tiny rush and the fish is not fresh at all, he just tells you it is. I know multiple staff now that he has hired and neglected to pay which has resulted in labour board judgements against him. Soggy fries, crap service and just the fact that he lies about his food being fresh should keep many people away from this poor establishment!
My favourite fish and chips place in HRM.
Food & service great. Sadly, the portions are about half of what they used to be and there are more slivers of potatoes than actual chips.Prices in restaurant are higher than on their website. Have been going there for 60 years... What happened??
Read reviews and agree with most that food and service was excellant. 3 of us enjoyed the seafood chowder, fish and chips and scallops and chips. What was impressive was being asked if we wanted light or regular batter on the fish choices. We also enjoyed 2 glasses of wine.
Went and got two piece fish and chips yesterday. Two of the smallest pieces of fish I've ever seen. Asked for it well done was barely cooked. Will not be returning. Used to be great. Gone way down hill.
Great pizza and fish and chip
Willman's is the Best in fish in town with very generous portions. A must visit!
Amazing! Friendly! Old school!
The food here is always top notch, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
Excellent fish and chips. However, service could be improved. Very friendly staff but need to be a bit more attentive, especially when it's not too busy. But overall good experience.
Excellent clams and scallops, the fish with the light batter is fantastic. Great service and Propeller beer on tap. Highly recommended!
Came highly recommended. Meh.
So good.. hot fresh and lovely staff, nice work
Excellent seafood!! We're from Ontario and we come here every time we visit my in-laws and the food is amazing! We've been coming here for the last five years and Lucien never disappoints. The light batter, fish and clams are lovely, and the scallops are awesome - the best I can remember having in a restaurant. Keep up the good work Lucien, we'll be back!
Best fish & chips hands down in Halifax! I have been searching for good fish & chips for 4 months. Everywhere I have been, has been to gumy. To much breading! All you could taste was the batter & grease!
The food was great and the service was quick
Excellent service and the fish came in huge portions.
This chowder wasn't too bad. However, the fries with the scallops and fish were very greasy, and the server got the order wrong. I won't be back.
Got the jumbo platter, very overpriced for what we got. 15$ more expensive than Pleasant st Diner and not as much food.
best fish, chips and onion rings in the HRM
Poor service. Had to wait for the cashier and owner to finish arguing with a customer to be able to order. I left.
Awesome staff and best fish and chips (lightly battered) in Nova Scotia!
Extremely disappointing - more grease than food, scallops were rubber, haddock was undercooked. Top it off - the counter staff were rushed and not nice. Fed most of it to the seagulls - hope they enjoyed it!
Great food and service!
Delicious food as always!
Deffnately best fish and chips in HRM.
Great food (fish/chips and seafood platter). Even better service
My husband had the fish and chips and enjoyed it but I was very disappointed with lobster roll. The bun was tough and the lobster was very oily and it was like it was soaking in some type of liquid
Don't even get one star use to be great no no more .wow i had to give it one or to put this up that's not even right.
Great prices, food is good. Always very fast and staff is friendly!
Good place to eat
Food was fantastic and service was fabulous. Friendly and very quick. Worth the trip
Great fish and chips!
Fish arrived soggy. At first I thought there was no chips in the box, so my son gave me half of his. Then when I went to eat my fish, realized the chips were underneath the fish. A single layer of chips. There was so few, that's why I thought the chips had been left out. Won't be buying fish & chips there again. ????????????
Very good good and reasonably priced we were visiting from Ontario and stopped in. I would recommend it.
Very good fish and chips. Friendly service.
Love the creamy chowder ????
Great food but the prices went up..starting to get a little costly
Outstanding fish and chips. Gluten-free available
Lunch
Always a favorite! The clams & chips are to die for, EVERY TIME. Big menu... Wrap around patio for nice days. And the service is top notch!
Excellent little seafood place in a quiet part of town just outside of the Halifax harbor. The seafood chowder is great and comes with a massive dinner roll. The cup is more than enough because your entree portions are huge. I had the 2pc fish (traditional batter) and chips, but upgraded my chips to poutine. Excellent. The rest of the table had fried clams and scallops and every really seemed to enjoy their food. The fries are hand cut, everything is fresh, and just great! 5/5 would definitely eat here again!
Bright dining room with lots of windows for people watching. Staff was friendly and attentive. Food arrived quickly- my pan fried haddock was cooked well, and she had a generous serving of fresh clams.
Fun delicious and local owner.
Food was great....cheers
I was looking forward to eating here, but I was so disappointed. The chowder had a skim on top of it. It didn't seem fresh, it seemed like it was reheated in the microwave, the fish was really greasy, and tasted like the oil used to deep fry it was past it's prime and needed to be changed. There are so many places to get fish and chips in Halifax, I wouldn't make the mistake of returning here.
Great service, delicious food. Would specifically recommend the Lucien's traditional batter fish and chips. First went here 5 years ago, and don't make it there often, but it is quality every time!
Meal type
We were here yesterday with a big group. Service was amazing. Fish was incredibly fresh. Light batter option was appreciated. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Way smaller than the photos shown on google. As other reviews mentioned, plates are very small. I ordered the big boy platter and got less than a handful of fries. For paying 40 dollars on a plate, I got less than a handful of seafood. There was a clear change of ownership here, I wouldent come here if I were you.
Solid fish and chips from an awesome chef/server. Would recommend the lightly battered fish!
Best fish and chips in the city
I recently got fish and chips here. It is NOT fresh at all. Very mushy, greasy, and definitely seemed previously frozen. I'm from a fishing community with lots of fresh fish, and I could instantly tell this was not that! The owner should be ashamed for claiming it's fresh. Look at the comment from a previous employee! The owner apparently does whatever he can to save money, not a good business model!! If you want FRESH fish, go to Phil's seafood on Quinpool, ALWAYS fresh!
Great neighborhood restaurant, well worth a try
Fast service, great food. This resturant has been around for years and is a real hidden treasure that you must visit.
The gluten free menu provided interesting choices I might try in the future. I had a good meal with what the fish I had.
Great seafood chowder and the best fish & chips in Halifax!
Best fries in the HRM, staff are very friendly.
The Food was great but the tables and floors where dirty, I have been going to Willmans for year and this is the fisrt time that I have seen the Restaurant dirty.
It was our first time ordered in from them. We got Big Bouy Platter and beet salad. The Big Bouy Platter was good, just felt like the portion of shrimp and scallops were small, we only got 3 shrimp and 2 scallops in total. The fish was very …
Very good fish and chips.
The best fish and chips in Halifax. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great prices and portions!
Great fish and chips in this long established restaurant. Highly recommended.
Fish and chips were really good, especially with the lite batter. A bit pricey though
Our fish was bland and the batter didn't cover it so the oil got in and ruined the fish. It was good Friday so they were slammed, so I will try again on a slower day
Eat here all the time. This place is a true diamond in the rough. I'm a fish and chip/seafood lover. Been to all the renowned fish and chips joints around HRM, and no where's can touch Willmans. Always good, always consistent.
Good fish dinner and a great price.
Fantastic place to eat. Fish and chips are very well done, excellent staff and clean environment. Gluten free menu was great for my colleague and tasted great too. Very highly recommended.
Excellent food but my wait for a pre ordered pick up was extremely long. Only one person working doing the cooking and waiting on tables. Not fair to him or the people having long waits.
Best seafood platter in Halifax. Owner is very obliging and service is great
Love the light batter.
The food was horrible, the service was bad. Zero stars. We were looking for a quiet meal away from the busy downtown. We both had fish and chips that were ready almost immediately and tasted like frozen, heat lamp food - greasy, bland, mushy. Mine had way more fries which looked like the bottom of the barrel because it was all small bits. The owners loud family sat next to us on the patio - the kids ran and stomped around us while the woman yelled at them. All-into -all, horrible experience - NOT fresh food. Expensive. The price would not have been an issue had the food been fresh/better. We can make better from boxed, frozen grocery store fish. Will never go back.
Ordered two two-piece fish n chips... Best I've had in years
Great neighbourhood fish n' chips place! The fish is fresh and you can order the light batter which helps reduce the bad fats, slightly. Also, order the homemade tartar sauce. It's great with the fish. And the coleslaw is good, too! I'd like to add that I've recently been ordering their tasty seafood chowder which comes with a nice homemade white roll. The menu says "seafood chowder" but it leans more towards "fish chowder" with a few random pieces of seafood, and for the the price of 13.99, that is a bit too pricey. I make a seafood chowder at home with all the seafood and lots of it! For those not into fish n' chips or other deep-fried foods, and want a healthier meal, I highly recommend their very delicious falafel!! Overall, all the other items on the menu are quite tasty.. Another big plus is that the owner is very friendly & kind.
A little pricey but good.
Great fries
Really good coleslaw - not bland and big crunchy pieces of cabbage. The fish and chips is a hit-or-miss. When the owner is the one preparing the fryer, it is good; otherwise, it can be soggy or undercooked. The ketchup on the tables needs to be changed (not just refilled) - the labels are see-through from being handled by customers . . . kind of off-putting.
We went there three times in three days. We tried fish and chips and seafood platters, both were good. They also serve cod tongue, which is unique and tasty. Overall, good food and service, will definitely come back next time we are in Halifax.
I was completely disappointed with the order... i ordered 3 piece fish n chips, the batter was soggy and fish was undercooked! I also ordered the seafood platter was about $ 25.00 and it was the most pathetic excuse for a platter i have ever been served! I no tarter sauce or coleslaw alled and they advised that was a normal order... he said six small clams...they were minatureand three scollops! One small piece of fish and more fries then the actual seafood! I also ordered the beet salad with goat cheese for $15.00 and was the smallest wilted salad i seen i couldnt bring myself to eat it without the dressing they were supposed to send. i could go on and on for my there friends but we decided we just will never ever eat here again! Not sure how your business survives by serving this! Disappointed at myself to order here when there are many options in Halifax... order and eat at your own risk...
Decent mussels albeit the melted butter I asked for with it didn't come until I reminded them and was halfway done.
The best fish and chips in HRM and arguably Nova Scotia. Nice clean Restaurant , Friendly servers and having the owner come out and ask if everything was OK after he cooked your meal? Unheard of !!! We'll be back again !!!!
Delisious! Nice service.
Best falafel we've had in a while! We loved the clam strips. Food was fresh and the service is super friendly.
Friendly staff, great prices and excellent food.
Always good food here. North end classic.
Excellent in my opinion
Many restaurants have mussels and are good but not great...The mussels were flavourful AND memorable. Delicious ..I will be back
Yummy fish and chips!
Scallops and chips were great! Decent beer selections.
Consistently great Fish and Chips. Currently operating as takeout only restaurant due to Covid restrictions.
Excellent atmosphere, great service. Food was good but nothing special.
Found the quality of the Fish and Chips to be very disappointing. Used to be my "go to" place for Fish and Chips locally for years. Was very disappointed. Fish was wet and batter very soggy (eat in). Fries were the best part of the meal Then had confusion at cash during paying for meal...took part of my meal payment and put it in the tip bowl..???? Do not expect I will be returning anytime soon. Sad to see this decline ????
Great service and awesome fish
Fantastic fish and chips! My partner and I stopped by here for lunch on a whim, and I'm glad we did. I ordered a two-piece fish and chips; the portions were quite generous (I should only have ordered one piece, but I ate both!) and the batter was thick and crispy, the fish was excellent, and the chips were perfect! My partner ordered a platter with light batter fish and some little breaded crab sort of things--I tried one of those, too, and it was also excellent. If you have a craving for fish and chips, this place is excellent.
The calamari were okay. Would be good if they were crispy. Fish and chips were fine. Note they have no salt on them at all. So one who prefers a it of salt and spice might not find it that appetizing.
Cod tone was good! So was calamari and fish and chips. So much better than Toronto!
I love their fish and they seem to have really nice staff
Nice clean historical location. Great fish and chips. Fresh fish. Highly recommend the signature light batter. It is a bit pricey for what you get. Portions are decent sized. 2 orders of fish and chips and 1 pop $35 before tip. Charge extra for a small amount of coleslaw that is normally included at other places. Still worth it!
3 years strong. We love this place......... I made this post 2 years ago when Lucian was a visible participant in the restaurant... I haven't seen him around in a long time, I see new faces so I assume either there's new staff or the whole thing has been sold... I've tried both the light batter and regular batter fish and chips on two different occasions recently and was pretty disappointed in the quality of both...it feels to me like either the fryer temp is too low and the end product soaks up an extreme amount of the oil or they don't let the product drain either in the fry basket or on a rack after they come out of the fryer oil, my guess is the former. Either way the signature item seems to have taken a extreme nosedive in quality since the review I made 2 years ago. I don't think I will be trying this place anymore which is a shame because I really enjoyed the place before.
Food is constantly good and very friendly service . Best Haddock in my opinion!
Enjoyed the battered fish, crisp and hot. Love these mom and pop places. The money's not going out to pay franchise fees.
Decided to give this place a visit while walking around the area; it was a great, cozy place to stop in after being battered by the chilly wind. Lots of windows make for a bright space with decor that is clean but not overwhelming. The cook (and owner perhaps?) made it a great and personal experience, and thankfully recommended I go with a medium instead of large newphie poutine! Food is good and affordable, and the cheese curds actually squeak. An absolutely lovely lunch spot.
Service
The 2 times I was there during the evening, the fish was burnt. I gave it a fair shot, will not be back.
Love it! Great location. Great food. Have only gone for take out but the manager is lovely and helpful.
I wouldn't return, food is just average. Service was horrible.
A good as you can get for fish and chips.
Excellent chowder
Awesome food, place and ppl. ????
Seafood Chowder was watery and certainly not creamy or thick at all. And it should be called for what it is: fish chowder. Other than a quarter inch piece of shrimp there was no other seafood other than fish. The warm bun was great...about a week ago. It was totally stale and obviously just thrown in the microwave for a few seconds. Fish was greasy and the chips were limp. The gravy was bland and had a layer of oil on top. We should have believed the bad reviews over all the good ones.
Good food, large helpings, friendly staff
Always good food. And great staff
Great food, great prices , quiet location
Good fish and chips
Good fish and chips.
Food was great and prices weren't bad.. ????
Best Clams and fries I may have ever had!
Enjoyed great service and classic fish and chips.
Tasty fish and chips and good service.
Lake better is excellent
Good service and fish was decent.
Looking fwd to trying it again.
Excellent. Best chips in town. Fish was perfect. Staff were friendly, focused and efficient.
I got the calamari and onion rings. The calamari was cooked perfectly and seasoned really well. The Onion rings were great as well. The sauce for the calamari was amazing.
Im glad I went around the area and just found out about this restaurant recently. I end up really liking their coated cod's tongue and I was reluctant to try it at first. I like their fish n chips and slaw is very creamy which I really like. I was lucky to be able to try a sample of their chowder and the taste reminded me of childhood! This place is very clean considering the guy was alone when I had lunch. The customer service is very friendly. The neighbourhood is real nice and quiet and their customers are pleasant too! I would give more than 5 stars.
Absolutely AWESOME! The scallops were perfectly prepared and the chips were some of the best, cooked to a perfect tenderness but not too hard. This was our first meal in Halifx and it was outstanding! From GA, NC, and GA.
I should've believed the negative ratings and go elsewhere. I went for the fish and chips. The fish was greasy and the fries were limp.
Really tasty fish & chips with couteous service
The food is great and the service friendly. Great price for what you get. Will definitely go here again.
Good food but pricey
The very Best of the best in Halifax for clams and chips.
Great fish & chips and a nice relaxed atmosphere.
The restaurant is very nice, with clean and tidy sitting arrangement. The staff that served me was very polite and friendly. The Fish and Chips that were served was very crispy and fresh and I would also say it was one of the best meals I had in Nova Scotia. Other than this they also had lot of other varieties of food like Pizza, Pasta, Noodles etc.
Willman's was always the place to go for great fish and chips. So when my parents came to town looking for sea food the first place I thought of was Willman's. The service was great but the sea food was terrible and expensive. What happened to the great food you used to serve. I not sure what you are thinking as we live on the water and Halifax and Dartmouth have some of the best sea food on the coast. Too many other option so I will not be back.
Another spot to fish and chips were caught in in they treat me so well I only ask for one piece of fish to end up giving me to what a place definitely recommend this place
I'm from the South Shore and whenever im in Halifax and im in the mood for fish this is the place never disappointed
We Had two seafood platters 20 minutes ago, everything was hot and fresh, real clams! Would highly recommend! Friendly staff as well!
Fast service, good food, good prices, nice atmosphere
Very friendly staff. The food was fantastic and they accomodated my celiac by changing the oil and making me special gluten free fish and chips. I will be returning soon to try the gluten free calamari
Really good food
Great place, i find the fellow behind the counter very nice. Cant beat the fish and chips!
Great food and service.
IT AIN'T YOUR GRAND PARENTS WILLMAN'S. WHY? IT'S BETTER. MUCH BETTER. I KNOW. I ATE THERE IN THE 1970s.
Clean and quick service. Fish pieces were very small and thin.
Staff here was friendly and the fish was great. I was a little surprised by the price with coleslaw and gravy added but the food was good.
It was delicious, drove in from Elmsdale just for your fish and chips.
Hell ya. And the service is FANTASTIC
One of the best fish and chips places in HRM. My go to is the one piece with a Newfie poutine! Definitely worth getting!
Don’t ever go here!! Minus 10 on the stars. Went there for the first time on Feb 22/20. Our one piece fish was all of 2 oz, our sweet potatoe fries were sparse and we never ever received the coleslaw, fish chowder, or drinks that we ordered. We asked for them four times while we were there. The waiter said “Service above everything” when we pointed out our dilemma. I asked for 50% off and they charged us $20.00. Please don’t ever go there!!
Great local spot for fresh fish and chips, clams, mussels and more. A must try!
Awesome! Best fish and chips in Halifax!
Dine in
Amazing fish and chips. Been around since the 50's and for good reason!
Great food and very friendly. Great deal for the amount you get.
Unfriendly owners and sub par food
Good price for single fish and chips.
Good food, great service
Most places include slaw with fish and chips. This place didn't. For the amount I paid for and received, felt a bit nickel and dimed.
Our meal was excellent, the service was wonderful and it was a great overall experience.
We had the fish and chips. The fish sizes were small and the whole meal was greasy.
I was disappointed with the quality of their fish and chips. Living in a city like Halifax, where there are so many choices for fish and chips, they reached the bottom of my list.
Fantastic fish and chips
Large portion sizes, prompt service and fresh seafood.
The food is awesome! The owner is the most friendly person you will ever meet. You feel so very welcome the second you open the door.
Had better it might have been because they were so busy .. dont think I will go back
WORST WORST WORST fish and chips I've ever had -- dark brown "traditional" batter with grease dripping from every bite! Then they cleared the table when I wasn't finished my drink yet. They said they thought I left -- without paying? without my coat? Made no apology or offer to make right. Their Shoo Dog is very good, however.
Not bad but....pricey!!
Best fish and chips in Halifax. Very friendly staff. Had a two piece light batter, yummy.
Bad service and the food not that good
Probably the best fried clams/scallops/fish/chips i've had in Canada! I was blown away. Really tasty food. The seafood platter was amazing although it's definitely not a healthy choice but worth every fat+calorie! Tip: If you're there, make sure you ask for Lucien's home made tarter sauce.
Fries were a little under cooked.
Probably the best fish I've ever had, and consistently so. My entire family of five loves this place so much we drove two hours to bring my visiting mother here. No other words for the fish and chips other than *Amazing*. Only thing that makes it better is the great prices!
Great fish and chips. Run by a super friendly staff.
Awesome spot. Friendly fast service, great food. Cole slaw is fresh, crispy and delicious.
Great fish and chips. First timer.
Food was bad, just standard deep fried food, service was nice tho.
Coming from Ontario, we were looking for some local fish and chips restaurants. Willman’s is the right place to go. Great service and food. The light batter fish and chips was excellent. Lucien has a great sense of humour and was very attentive. Definitely will be making this a regular stop on our trips to Halifax.
Wow awful. Bad food. Terrible service. Ridiculous prices. Bought out years ago. Who eats here? Not long for this world.
Fish and chips, and onion rings were quite good.
The owner was amazing and the food was great and he was all by myself.
As someone who went to Willman’s for many years growing up, and just recently moved back home, I was ecstatic to learn they now offer gluten free fish and chips as I am now Celiac. I called after work to place my order and was asked if I wanted gluten sensitive or Celiac fish and chips. I asked what the difference was and was told a separate fryer is used for Celiac. I said I was celiac. I ordered a 3 piece gluten free fish and chips with large coleslaw. I was so excited to finally have fish and chips! When I arrived, the man rang in my order...$26! Included in that was a $4 charge for the use of the separate fryer which I was not made aware of in advance. I gulped at the price but figured it must really be worth it. It definitely was not. The fish was not battered - it was lightly coated in a corn flour crust and really didn’t taste very good. The fries, as cheap as they are to make were few and far between. If I had 20 fries in the whole order I would have been lucky. I had to coat the fish in tartar sauce to give it any taste and ended up throwing one of the pieces away. My daughter who loves fish spit it out. I do not like to leave negative reviews, especially for a local business but I was so incredibly disappointed in what I received and to have to pay $26 for what I got was really unbelievable. I will not be back.
Use to love this place when I was a kid, it has changed a lot. But it is still a great place to eat!
Fish was ok but very greasy. Portions are small for the price. Got a 3 piece fish and chips for the family to share. They included a 4th piece of fish but there were hardly any fries. No tartar or coleslaw included in price. Overall a dissapointing purchase. Will not be returning.
I paid $37.00 plus tax for a "gigantic" seafood platter with a medium gravy for take out, I only got 3 scallops, 3 shrimp, a small quantity of small clams, and thin haddock. I had to remind the guys at the counter to give me my gravy as they were sending me on my way without it. This place is floating on its reputation from the old owners from decades ago. What a rip-off.
Great fish
The fish & chip were delicious! The onion ring were delicious. I loved the food presentation served on white plates with white & black printed paper very pretty. We were served timely by a sweet happy smiling young lady. We live 100 miles away but already planning for lunch @ Willman's on our next visit to Halifax.
Stopped here for a bite to eat and was very pleased with everything. Place was clean, service was great and food was fantastic. Highly recommend
The fish was delicious. Certainly held its own against other top contenders in town. The light batter was crisp, light and dry. The fish was tasty and well cooked. The fries were home-cut and fresh. Everything came out piping hot and fresh. Service was okay. Some of the staff were friendly and helpful, others were polite but curt.
Price - $$ Fish was fresh, fries were homemade and crispy. In the Seafood Platter the clams were a good portion, not as overwhelming as some places which was nice but only 3 scallops which disappointing. Glad I added a second piece of fish. Coleslaw is housemade and fresh but gravy, while tasty, was lukewarm. If you are looking for fluffy batter, which I don't enjoy, then look elsewhere. Over all a good experience but just shy of great. Keep improving Willman's.
Fish was fresh 3 years ago now lou dont care no more and kids working there dont know fresh from rotten
Delicious food, prepared quickly!
Some of the best clams I've ever had
Best fish and chips in Halifax. Scallops always excellent too! Turnover of staff in a small operation probably due to school and college students having to move. Lucien has always been a great host.
I'm from Scotland. This was about as close to "authentic" fish and chips as I've found in Canada. Great, local, beers on tap, and a nice location. Recommended.
Great food great service.. try the salad its friggin wicked
Great service by the owner himself. Very clean restaurant with well kept washroom. Located in the Hydrostone area of North End Halifax
We went here for lunch with our 11 month old. Glad they had a high chair. We ordered seafood chowder, seafood sub and fish and chips. All tasted really good and fresh. Their tartar sauce was the highlight of our lunch. It was brilliant. Service was quite slow as there was only one main server.
We got the gigantic seafood platter thinking me and the bf could share. There were 3 shrimp and scallops , a handful of clams and calamari rings, and two little pieces of fish with way too many fries. Although it was good, ,it wasnt 35$ plus tax good
Never got to experience it. Yelp says that they’re open, drove all the way here, closed at 7:00! Who is closed at 7:00 on Friday night?! I don’t even start thinking about dinner until 7:30. SMH.
Great food, quick service and lots of selection. Great place to have a nice meal.
Great service, great food ????
Best kept secret in Halifax.
In my opinion, the best fish and chips in Halifax.
Amazing food!!!! Service was warm and friendly! Affordable and many options to chose from on the menu. Highly recommend :-)
Fantastic sea food, great service.
Meal type
The website hours and Google hours are not the same as their opening hours, extremely unprofessional service. Will think twice before ordering from here again
Great food and service
Had fish and chips. The fish portion size was small. Fish seemed fresh and well cooked, but the batter was kind of bland. Fries were plentiful and pretty good. Cole slaw, was excellent, but the portion size was small for the price. Excellent service.
Happened upon this place by chance and wasn't expecting much. Got some of the best fish, clams and chips I've ever had. Amazing food, excellent service and super quick to get our meal. Highly recommended!
Service
Awesome Seafood!” My wife and I visited Willman's for the first time, December 2011. We received a very warm welcome from the owner Lucien. He took the time to talk with us and he was quite pleasant. It was a very warm atmosphere; his establishment and the washroom were extremely clean. Initially, I asked how he would compare his food to John's Lunch in Dartmouth. He replied; "we get our seafood from the same supplier, I cook mine in canola oil that is changed daily, John’s Lunch cooks in lard." I was impressed at how humble he was. We had the large and small seafood platters; they were exceptionally good, reasonably priced and cheaper than John's Lunch. It was a generous amount, the right temperature along with being fresh. The clams were lightly battered and extremely tender as was the calamari, scallops were sweet and melted in our mouths; my wife agreed. I highly recommend his “Lucien style” fish; it was a light, crispy coating. After our meal, I told Lucien there is a major difference between Willman’s and John's Lunch and John's Lunch simply does not compare with his. His response was “thank you, I am pleased that you are happy.” We returned again on December 28th and the food was consistent with our first visit. I own and operate a limousine service in Toronto, Ontario, I only point that out to say, I understand how important it is to always give great customer service, provide quality products to your clients and customers and maintaining that level of consistency. Willman’s exceeded our expectations and we will definitely visit again when we are back in Halifax. Mardy W. Dixon
Great fish and chips and amazing service!
Went for fish and chips and it was decent, had the regular batter and found the inside a bit mushy but the fish was cooked perfectly, nothing was seasoned though. I'm a huge tartar sauce lover and it was a home made version that I personally didnt enjoy. Over all the food was decent and priced accordingly.
Best Fish and Chips in Halifax since the 1940s. Don't miss a chance of tasting the "Best from the Ocean". The quality of food is the same since it opened. I've been going there since I was a teenager! Great friendly staff! Wonderful service! New building - lots of tables for sitting inside. Great painting of the original store on the corner. One of Halifax's treasures. In the north end - Hydrostone shopping area.
I don’t usually leave comment but this restaurant really changed my stereotype of fish&chips. Recommend.
Do not suggest if you are celiac. Menu was misleading, went there only to be informed salad and one fish menu option was available. Dedicated fryer yes and the fish itself was good but the coating wasn't. Found the batter on the fish dry and powedery, the fries that came with were hard and overdone and they didn't include any tartar sauce or ketchup. Staff was friendly.
Always great fish & chips! Excellent service as well. Totally one of the best local spots in Halifax!
Great fresh food - local atmosphere
Great fish and chips!
I asked Google for best fish n chips place, this is what came up. Not at all disappointed...the fish was perfect..
Willman's is my favourite place to go for fish n chips. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone nor go back again
Better than I remember when my family use to go years ago. Love that I got a choice of the batter for my fish. Could have had a few more clams and a couple of more scallops in the platter, but oh my, the flavors were AMAZING! Sorry there are no pictures, but it didn't last long enough once we got started!
Great food great service
Great food and service.
Clean, professional, courteous and excellent food. Our newest favourite spot for fish & chips.
Thanks for answering the phone. You can’t go to this place cause they can’t answer. Thanks
Excellent fish and chips. Always great service.
Excellent Fish & Chips. Only place we’ve found in Halifax that does GF with a separate fryer. Service is excellent!
Ordered a two piece fish and chip for my partner and I to share for take-out. My partner found a hair in the fries which we set aside and decided to continue as a fluke. We found another in the fries of the same color and size. Was not impressed at all. I decided to keep going with the fish but then we found another but this one was cooked into the batter of the fish. We couldn't keep going at this point and threw it out and ordered Katch. We will not be going back.
Fish and chips as advertised in an idyllic surrounding neighborhood.
This place is a hidden gem in the north end. Would have never known if it wasn't shown. It's a must if you are a fish and chips fan.
Best fish and chips on the city. Fresh fish and love the batter.
Food is amazing. Will not be disappointed
Went out for lunch with my wife. As we arrived we were met at door and welcomed by a young server who showed us where we could sit. Followed up very well and server was great. Food was good and server was very helpful.
Badly overcooked
This was the best experience throughout covid I've had. They are so safe, polite, genuinely interested in the community and have such a warm family feel. The food was so fresh and tasty. Wish we lived closer to visit more I would highly reccomend
Wonderful fish & chips. The fish is lightly battered, thoroughly cooked with fresh fish that is tasty and juicy. The fries are excellent with the skin still on them. That they won't give you a glass of water is odd, but you can buy a bottle of water, of course.
The service was terrible and I got food poisoning from the seafood chowder
Excellent food - even better service. Definitely a spot to check out in Halifax
Lunch
great food friendly service nice atmosphere
Did not care for attitude of person taking order! No seat, or seating to wait for order! Found batter to be soggy on top of fries! Sweet Potato fries not done! On hard side! First time visit, Won't be back!
This restaurant changed hands about 10 years ago and has lived up to its predecessor that was there for I believe 50 years. There is more than one type of fish batter to choose from and the fries are freshly cut and your order is up quicker than you would think. Friendly staff and a nice environment with pictures from Years Gone by. One of the best fish and chip places in Halifax and the clams are top-notch if not the best in Halifax Dartmouth area. One would not be disappointed with choosing such a lovely restaurant.
Support Local. Super friendly, nice restaurant and patio in a pretty area. The food is pretty tasty too. You have your choice of light or regular batter on you fish.
I eat here at least once a month. Great fish, very fresh, great batter and the service is always great. Highly recommend.
Some huge portions, good prices, quiet diner feel (but brighter) and great fish and chips! Totally recommend it.
This was the best fish and chips place in Halifax by far. I will be back there many times. From the lightly battered fish to the homemade onion rings Lucien the owner made from scratch for me, to the warm lemon cheesecake with a dab of ice cream on top, it was a dining experience not to be forgotten.
Great fish and chips and poutine too!
Way over priced compared to Mass Town Market - truly disappointed!
Yummy food and best customer service.
Fast service good food
Nice, but wouldn't come back. Mediocre fish and chips.
Good fish, good chips, pleasant staff. Was a bit slow, however.
Willman's Fish & Chips - definitely one of the best spots for your classic fish and chip craving! I always pair my F&C with their tartar sauce and coleslaw - a combination worth of 5-star review. What makes it even better is their prices, you're sure to get your money's worth ????
Very friendly service from the moment you enter, tasty fish and chips and the coleslaw, yum! Good price! Located in a quite area and there is a plenty of space to sit.
Excellent food and service. Nice spot to eat and experience a full plate of tremendously prepared fresh fish and scallops and clams. The even have gluten free batter. Yum yum
Great food and very friendly
