Here you will be able to see the information of people who have information of the services of Hook Line & Sinker Fishing Tackle - Home of The First Cast Fly Shop (Fish Shop) in Guelph (Canada).
To this day this firm has a score of 4.1 out of 5 and the rating is based on 127 reviews.
As you can see it has an average rating is really high, and it is based on a high number of feddbacks, so we may say that the evaluation is quite accurate. If people have bothered to evaluate when they are happy with the business, is that it works.
As you know, we don't usually bother to place feddbacks when these are positive and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or issue...
This Fish Shop is included in the category of Fishing store.
Very attentive staff. Almost a family atmosphere. So many of the patrons there were known by name by the staff. Huge selection but pricey AF.
Amazing fly shop. But then what would you expect of one nestled into a part of the country surrounded by some of the best rivers and streams in Southern Ontario? Not only a wide selection and supply of reels, rods, accessories, fly tying material you would expect, but the knowledge and customer service you want. You know you have come to the right spot when there is a fly tying seminar going on showing you how to tie a fly that the local trout have been known to devour. That is the definition of sharing and paying it forward! All that was missing was a big old friendly dog, and a wood stove!
I live in Barrie and The First Cast is the best location and well worth the drive to Guelph. Fly tying materials are outstanding.
I nipped by the shop today to look into getting a reel serviced. Ray was very personable and informative and explained the the ‘rub’ i was feeling in my reel was a natural part of the reel being broken in and that there was no need to service it. I don’t know where else you will find honesty like that! I took the money I would have spent on the reel cleaning and treated myself to a few lures since the shop boasts a nice selection high end lures not found anywhere else in the area. Ray seemed genuinely happy to chop it up about the local fisheries and quick to suggest spots in the area for various species. It’s a great little shop and I’ll be back as the open water season gets closer!
They did a great job of converting un-used fishing equipment into some needed cash for our family with their awesome Used But Not Abused gear swap on their site.
Ray is super knowledgeable and helpful! Every time we come in we always leave with fish tips and lots of laughs!
Called in to ask about bait, whoever answered the phone was exceptionally rude. Will never go back to this store.
The prices are higher than anywhere else. Also the staff is quite rude, making you feel dumb, even though I have come to notice that he is not as knowledgeable as he would have you believe.
I have been shopping with The First Cast for about a year now. I really appreciate that I am quickly recognized when I go into their showroom. I always get expert help and all my questions get answered. All the equipment and information I have received from this establishment has been above and beyond my expectations. I truly recommend their fly fishing workshops if you are looking to properly reduce the steepness of your fly fishing learning curve.
Ray was a huge help and very knowledgable. Big thanks for moving things around to accommodate us for our guide.. I love my new 4wt echo ! This guy will be able to answer all your questions . I will without a doubt be returning to the store to see ya next year!
Best fly shop around, great selection and pleasant helpful staff
Excellent knowledge. Really sets you up for success.
Best tackle shop in southern ontario, hands down. High quality gear, amazing advice.
Great service. Spent over an hour with David going through everything I would need to get started fly fishing. Not pushy just very helpful.
The only problem I have with the shop is that it's too close to my house (5 minute walk).. but seriously, I try very hard to deal with all the local guys and keep the small shop experience alive in the Guelph/Kitchener area, as for my tying supplies hard to find better stocked shelves.
Being a fly fisherman, i can only comment on the fly half of the store - well stocked with everything you need, and good quality.
Unreal service. Super friendly and knowledgeable. Always leave with a smile and in a better mood than when i went in. Great selection and stock.
Lots of fishing Toys for the fishing enthusiast tying supplies and seems like they know eachother as this was my first time in their guys gathering around the counter telling stories about the big ones that takes there hooks AKA usually I log lol
I asked the owner if he was experienced repairing Hardy reels and he ignored me and refused to sell me products. A very strange and awkward experience to say thr least.
Super friendly and helpful. Great helping out both me and my young son. Staff took time to teach him how to rig everything up and got him super excited to go out and catch some fish!
Nice store very good selection. Prices are high. Good place to go for a few items. Larger purchases are better at sail or bass pro.
I have never dealt with HLS up to 4 days ago. I ordered a replacement CNC spool for my vintage Cardinal C4, 6lb Gama line professionally spooled up and a spool spacer for my vintage Garcia Mitchell 300. This was done very efficiently on the phone and the parcel was recieved a day before it was promised. Exactly promised and exactly delivered. So much so I have already inquired on additional odd ball equipment requests to be sourced. Thank you for treating my business and requested that have exceeded my expectations. Very Refreshing...."I'll be back" Thank you
Fantastic service! I was really surprised at how quickly Ray was able to ship out a hard to find line kit to Calgary that I was scowering the net trying to find. Great price, great service wouldn't hesitate to order again!
Amazing selection but not pleased with the service on my first visit
Great customer service and great selection of fish supplies ????????????
Best store ever.
We had an exceptional experience here! You have to try the Fly Fishing lesson. They are so professional and made it so much fun!! Would highly recommend the store for any of your fishing needs.
Terrible service. Unorganized and unproffessional guide referrals.
Came here after wasting my time at CanadianTire and bass pro. Great prices, extremely knowledgeable staff and very friendly for beginners. Thanks for all your help!
Best flyfishing gear shop in South Western Ontario!
Bought some books and spinners and staff was friendly and well knowledgable
Ray is the best.
Ray is a great guy to deal with. Full of valuable information to.
My husband and I took a beginner fly fishing lesson with Doug through Ray's shop. It was a fantastic experience and the entire process from booking to day-of was seamless. Ray made sure all our questions were answered and the lesson included all the starter gear we needed to hit the river. Doug was really patient and knowledgeable throughout our lesson. We are very glad we took the lesson and will definitely be taking advantage of future fly fishing lessons to improve our skills.
Probably one of the best tackle shops I've been to. Wide variety of lures and soft plastics that frankly you cant find a lot of at any other store. Cant believe I never made it there sooner as it's a must to go to this place! I'll be back soon.
add +1 to phone number
Under circumstances shop owner is doing his best to protect customers from Covid I give him 100% on his efforts
Hi Ray. Just a short note to say thank you to yourself and Arron one of your guides. Both Don and myself had a wonderful day out. Arron really did get over his points clearly and efficiently.. it was so easy to comprehend. Thank you for everything.. your attitude towards the sport has been one of the main reasons i took it up. I'm a relative novice, however, you treat me like a pro. I look forward to seeing you again soon.. and hopefully Don gets out fishing when he gets back to Alberta... Have a great weekend.. and a great fathers day.
came in here as a first time fly tyer, asked what size bead goes with what size hook and he told me he did not know and that I should ask his customer/buddy in his store who didn't really care. The dry flies are not very good quality for the price. Would not recommend
friendly and knowledgeable staff
Excellent service and advice.
Lovely little shop! Owner helped me find exactly what I was looking for and got me in and out of the store in less than 5mins. Wish there wasn’t covid so I could have taken more time to look around but I can’t complain. Very clean, and even though it isn’t the cheapest, the gear looks to be very good quality!
Building a Fishing Rod is something I have always been interested in. Looking at websites did not give me confidence to try this on my own. This class allowed me to learn some of the fundamentals of rod building and gave me some ideas for rods I would like to build for myself. Our instructor Mike Rumig was able to work with us and show some of the basic techniques to rod building. Mike is a very knowledgeable instructor and has alot of patience to teach newcomers to the art of rod building. The hands on environment worked out really well for me as I was able to learn some of the techniques with my own hands. While we were building Mike was able to watch and teach us the correct techniques. Mike was always inspecting while we were building, giving us instruction along the way. Mike was concerned to make sure we were successful, we were able to build something that was going to look professional and perform once it would be put to the test. There is alot to know and learn here and this course certainly only scratches the surface but its enough to make you feel you can build rods that you will be proud to take out on your next fishing adventure. Taking this course ( with the support from Ray at HLS and Mike ) I know I will be able to continue and grow my skills making my fishing rods. Jamie
Great place to buy gear, friendly and very knowledgeable.
Great customer service, great selection, and not condescending to beginners at all. Made the process of exchanging a reel surprisingly pleasant and gave helpful suggestions and tips with genuine enthusiasm and thought. It’s obvious these guys have a passion for fishing and want to share it with others. If you’re thinking about checking the shop out I encourage you to do so.
Definitely worth the drive to Guelph! Great service. Friendly service Clean and well stocked!
Great service. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Very well organized. I visited during COVID-19, and they took every reasonable precaution to protect their customers and provide a safe shopping experience. I am relatively new to Guelph and needed a new fishing store - I definitely found it in Hook Line & Sinker.
Great service and very knowledgeable Ray at the Guelph store is super friendly and very knowledgeable and was of great assistance for choosing a new rod. I so much prefer buying from a local shop then from the big box stores.
Lots of fishing gear you cant find anywhere else.
This place is a fricken joke, horrible customer service skills!
Great selection and the owner was very very very knowledgeable and helpful. Hat tip for finding everything a couple foreigners needed and more!
Excellent store, staff knows lots and there is an immense selection of fly fishing and spin fishing gear. Definitely worth checking it out
Always a great place to visit for all fihing needs
The best store to ever exist
Not just a great shop but a great community, everytime I've visited HLS I've been met with professional advice and tips from Ray, and if he is unsure he will find out! For being a small shop the prices are reasonable and for the knowledge you recieve I rate it highly. I will always recommend Hook, Line & Sinker to friends, family and anyone needing assistance with starting their fishing addiction. Thank you Ray for everything you've done!
My first week living in Guelph I visited HLS and was hooked up big time by Ray with info on local fish species and spots. He’s always willing to help and treats my wife and I with nothing but respect when we show up.
Let's say if it's a good day for the owner it's a good day for the customer, however I went to the store on the owners bad day, I will never go to this store again!
My favourite local tackle store in town. Arguably the best tackle store in southern Ontario for all the surrounding Great Lakes and rivers. Ray is very knowledgeable and friendly. His service for the sport is top notch. Love visiting this store and I can spend a lot of time in here just talking about fishing. The products this store carries are unique and exclusive with reels that other retailers don’t have. Not to mention the best variety of Steelhead beads, hand tied Flies, tubes, jigs, hooks and list goes on. Highly recommended if you are new to fishing or a pro. Looking forward to dropping in very soon.
Very Friendly staff very big selection for everything from bass to muskie. Prices are a little expensive but they have a lot of things other stores don't.
Excellent service with very knowledgeable staff. We will definitely be back!
Whatever you need, you'll find it. They'll also give you excellent advise if you need it.
Hook Line & Sinker is such a great store. The fly tying materials inventory is second to none in the area. The shop also carries the full spectrum of fishing equipment and most importantly, the knowledge associated to the products.
I’ve been to many fishing shops and HLS is the best of them all. Not just the great deals and value, but the courtesy was top notch. Had a great experience, thank you. Will definitely tell my friends and I will return. :)
amazing store great service good prices nice and helpful staff came in to find out why my baitcaster kept backlashing learned why and also got my line re-spooled for only 7.00$ very quick and helpful service
Get place to get fishing tackle and other fishing gear! Plus they sell live night crawlers and leaches
I've been a regular customer of The First Cast fly fishing store for several years and my visits to the store have always been a pleasure. If you need anything that is not in stock then Ray is happy to order the item in for you, he goes out of his way to make visiting the store enjoyable, and his willingness to share his vast fishing knowledge helps you to make the correct choices easily.Definitely my favourite fishing store.
Talked to them on the phone, they told me they had a rod in stock that I wanted. Drove all the way there and they said it "just sold" which I'm sure was a lie ($1000 fly rod). Just wanted to get me in the shop to try and sell me something else. Will not go back. Response to Owner: Based on the other reviews on HL&S about your conduct, I should have expected such a childish response to my review. Couldn't have been bad service, I must be plotting to destroy your business with my one review. The rod was a Sage X 9' 9wt and this occurred last fall. I called, person said rod was in stock, I drove 1.5hrs to pick up rod, was told rod was just sold, person said I should buy a loomis nrx because sage x sucks anyway, I declined, person offered to order rod but would take 3-6 weeks due to backorder, I declined and left.
Needed boots and waders staff was careful to make sure that I had the rite setup at a reasonable cost .great Service ????????
Honestly the best place around for all your fishing needs. Ray is very helpful, especially if you’re looking to get fitted for some waders or boots. Definitely your go to shop no matter what type of fishing you’re into!
Refused to sell me anything when I questioned the price of hooks. Which were 5 dollars per 6 over priced. How dare I question the price of an item? I usually try to support local brick and mortar and understand that comes at a cost. But I don't need warrantee on hooks so kiss my business goodbye. Forever. Stopped in at another local store and they sold me the same hooks for 9.99 instead of 14.99.
Went into Hook Line & Sinker today as a person very new to fishing looking for some help with where to start. Staff were very friendly and helped me get a good set of starting tackle within my budget, and also gave me great advice on how/where to get started.
Love this store, owner is full of knowledge and always a pleasure to deal with. Highly recommend this store
Terrible customer service, I will never step foot in that place again,
Great store fantastic service & perfect attitude ... Thanks for the tips and advice yesterday when I bought the fly rod/reel package from you. Great store fantastic service & perfect attitude. Hope to come back soon. Regards. Al, Wasaga Beach
Ray was so helpful and made sure I was ordering exactly what I wanted. Ray is the man! I will calling him more often. Its such a relief having someone who cares and takes the time to make sure you get what you need. Thanks Ray for all your hard work and tight lines!!!!!
Went for fly fishing lessons, and had a great day. I really enjoyed the store/set up, and I also had a great day on the river. Ray set us up with a great instructor (Peter Charles), and I will definitely be returning to the store when I purchase my trout rod/reel set up.
Great selection of lures! Only tackle shop that I know of that carries Googan Baits. Regular stop when coming down to Guelph!
As a professional fishing guide for many years, I feel I have the knowledge and experience to know a great tackle shop when I see one. Hook, Line and Sinker is without a doubt one of the best around. Great selection, knowledgeable and friendly staff make each visit a great experience. Particularly, the fly shop department with unquestionably the best fly tying selection in all of Ontario.
Excellent shop. Great selection and always willing to spend time to answer questions and give advice. Great customer service.
One of the best fishing stores I've been to in Ontario. Unmatched selection of baits and pre tied flies and the owners great
I walked in the store not knowing very much except that I needed help. I was shown a couple different pairs of waders and boots of varying price and quality....each was explained on their merits and downsides. I felt no pressure and was guided through the process very professionally.......that was 25 years ago and although I have moved a couple times to different cities and have always traveled to see Ray for his knowledge guidance and friendship. Great gear great prices and support with Rays endless knowledge on the sport.
Great shop! Great selection and super helpful staff!
My friend is getting into fishing and wanted to go to a fishing store but did not want go travel outside of Guelph. We wanted to support the local Guelph store until we met the owner. He first only wanted to sell us some no name rod and reel he has had since 2014. We tried to negotiate another set up but he wouldn't have it. We wanted to research the brand so once he heard that he stormed off and started using the fishing line machine which made so much noise you couldn't hear yourself talk. I also asked him for a certain type of tackle and he told me to basically find it myself and I should open my horizon as there is other outdated tackle he had for sale. Oh, we also purchase a whole setup with a bag from Canadian Tire for the same price with well known name, quality brands. They get a 1 out of 5 only because of how they dealt with the Covid procedure on entering the store. A 2 customer limit was stated by the owner yet there were 3 of us in our party... the one star is generous.
This place advertises that they can fix rods. I walked in with my rod which needed repair and this guy didn't even wait for me to ask or look at the rod, he just said I cant fix that. So okay, I guess, I thought I'd grab a bit of tackle so I picked up a couple things walked up to the cash register and he says "read the sign, no use of debit under $10.00." If you want to be treated by a rude, ignorant store representative this is the place to go. His whole attitude was nasty. If you want to be treated like a valuable customer go to Natural Sports The Fishing Store on Victoria in Kitchener, if they can't help you they will at least treat you with respect. Definitely worth the drive.
Great store. Owner is very helpful
Pretty good selection of baits, but usually more expensive then other places. The owner is VERY rude and super odd. Will Not be back. Much rather travel to Natural Sports in Kitchener.
I recently took the Beginners Fly fishing Lesson with the First Cast and couldnt have asked for anything more. It was extremely comprehensive and the instructors explained everything clearly so it was not overwhelming. 6 hours of top class instruction for a great price and with 1 instructor to 2 students you get all the help you need. They even supply any gear or all gear if you need it. I would highly recommend this class to anyone interested in fly fishing.
Called to check for the reel. Guy tries to explain if I saw "sold sign" on website. Better response would have been to tell me...sorry we are sold out rather than telling me where to look in website.
He has a nice selection and he's a very nice guy. He's got every thing I need its a great store
Great place; filled with things big box stores don't have. They had some lures on deeeeeeep discounts which got me to try some new lures I would otherwise have not because of the price! Thanks! I would reccomend being really open minded when you go to the store because the owners may come off as condescending/rude but I only see people having that problem if they front and don't know what they are talking about or don't have tough skin.
Just started fishing for steelhead this year. In other words I ask a lot of really dumb questions. The owner here is absolutely fantastic. Answered all questions, got me set up with everything I need for steelhead fishing. Would recommend people drop by, this guy is a true gem of Guelph.
As a first-time customer entering into this establishment, I was extremely disappointed (if only negative stars could have been implemented ....). The website clearly states that "Whether you are a first time builder or have built too many rods to count, please do not hesitate to let us know how we can help" - this could not have been farther from its supposed intent. Having recently been introduced to the rod-building industry, I have minimal knowledge in the realm of such an intricate business. The form of belittlement was clearly evident, having been met with every question by a snarky, know-it-all remark, making known the obvious 20-plus years of experience the gentleman who we were speaking with had. We traveled over an hour from the city of Toronto to Guelph with the sole intent of visiting this institute, and were severely disappointed by the lack of consideration or regard the gentleman had. I left this store feeling unwelcome and with a sour taste in my mouth, and would NOT recommend this store to anyone (unless of course you are able to communicate with at least 30 or more years of rod-building experience). As a business owner myself, I ensure that my customers are treated with respect, and feel welcome, regardless of experience-level, question, or concern. This was the complete opposite of that.
Over priced as compared to Kingsway and any other store in the area. Huge mark ups and every where else you go you won't have to deal with a guy who tells you how you should be fishing. Not very easy going and I care not for rude people in general but unless you're willing to spend big bucks, the best are Kingsway (Guelph), Kitchener (Rainbow sports) and Woodstock ( angling) stores . Way better selections, and like I said, better prices.
Very informative, answered my questions, I couldn't expect more, I will be visiting again.
Worst customer service ever. These guys just wanna make sales but dont want to help you get what fits your needs best. Go to Natural Sports in Kitchener....they'll take care of you. For the record...I had to rate 1 star. If I could...I'd rate 0 stars
Overpriced in everything, I paid more than 230 CD for things cost 89 online. Also gave me a receipt with no details on it just depicting the total amount paid!!! The store is closing most of the time so you even can’t get a chance to go back to claim a receipt!!!
They know there stuff but the prices are significantly higher then other stores in the region. Not to mention the few times that I have been there the Owner in particular can be very arrogant. The sense of entitlement needs to be worked on here. Humble yourself and you will retain more customers from all budgets not just the upper middle class and the rich. Thanks,
Worth the drive to Guelph! Since spending time in your store over the past year has helped me have an better understanding on fishing tactics and technique, using different lures & artificial baits. Really enjoyed attending your Seminars relating to all aspects Fly fishing, etc. Upon completing the Introductory Fly fishing lesson, feel confident to practice on my own. Very informative Instructors. The friendly environment and interaction with other anglers, added to the learning experience. Overall, Hook Line & Sinker, The First Cast, a great place to visit and Shop! Now I'm equipped with additional arsenal........, to improve my chances of catching more fish. David B
To start off I am a long time customer and until today have had no problems but today started off with way too much sanitizer including spaying the front of my pants. Then came the plastic gloves. I politely questioned the process and that set Ray off . He told me if I didn't like the process there's the door. After taking my new gloves off and giving them back to Ray I left. There was no reason for him to be so rude from just a question. If your not ready to open yet don't, your just driving business away with a bad attitude. After many years going to this store, I won't be back! Hey ray it's now August and I just read your reply to post. A apology for spraying my Jean's with sanitizer would have gone a long way with my attitude.i guess you found that unnecessary. Also I was in your store last year and purchased a walleye rod and reel same process for covid that's ok it's your store went through it again this time .to say I had an attitude when I entered your store is a lie. Two customers clapping I'm I was in the store too I'll call you on that one also 211customers in one day that's 26 an hour for 8 hour day must have been your best day in years or is that a coincidence . Like I said a apology for spraying my Jean's would have gone a long way
DO NOT BE BULLIED BY THIS OWNER! Update: the owner is now claiming the giftcard was used already. I have video recording of him verifying the $100.00 on the card when he swiped it after I came in to try very respectfully figure out my situation. The owner said "I would have helped you if you didnt go on Google with this" also saying I could use the $100.00 in his store if the persons name I gave him when I bought the card says its "ok". He threatened to call the cops to have me removed within 5 minutes of me calmly standing at his desk asking for help his reasoning was "you called the better business bureau". Again I have this all recorded in its entirety, it is all accurate. Store footage will show nothing but me calmly talking to the owner. If the card was cashed it was not due to me gifting it to anyone. Completely scammed! Consumer beware! -YELLED AT AND BELITTLED BY THE OWNER- (worth the read) I Purchased a $100.00 gift card from this store a while back for my then boyfriend (now ex boyfriend). We broke up before I intended on giving the gift card away as a gift. The gift card is and always has been in my possesion. I called the store and spoke to the owner in hopes of getting my money back. The owner was immediately annoyed with my inquiry. He explained that, "the ONLY person who can use the gift card or cash it in is the person who owns the gift card". Confused I asked if that was me. The owner replied in a belittling voice, "no...who did you buy the gift card for!? Then who's do you think it is!? It's his not yours! FAIR is FAIR!" The owner grew more and more frustrated as I tried to explain my situation. He began yelling over me saying things such as: "I'll tell you what, how about I call up your ex and if he says I can release the money to you, I will!" "How about you come in WITH your ex and he can release the money for you!" "It's not my problem you broke up and didn't give it to him, you bought it for him so it's his!" I expressed how unfair this was to me, the paying customer. I expressed how belittling the owner was being toward me. I explained he had no reason to yell, be rude, or be angry with me. The owner replied, "you just don't get it! THIS IS MY STORE IM THE OWNER ITS MY POLICY AND I DON'T CARE! This conversation is going nowhere!" The owner then hung the phone up on me. I called back desperately trying to explain how unethical his reasoning was, while maintaining my composure throughout our conversation. How could a store owner possibly call up my ex and ask permission to release my money to me? Why is my ex entitled to my money when it was never given to him and he knew nothing of its existence? What if this was a horrendous break up and it is not safe to contact my ex? Despite my concern to his reasoning, the owner laughed at me saying, "I'll make sure to ask him how the break up was when he comes in and spends your money!" Completely blindsided I expressed my embarrassment for him as an owner. I explained how unprofessional he was being to which he replied, "ya how about I hang up on you again!" The owner hung up on me. I called back he picked up and hung up right away. I have never in my life experienced such abuse of power and poor costumer service. Not only can I NOT get my money back, I can NOT make any in-store purchases with the gift card I bought and have. I am left feeling bullied and belittled by the owner of this company, with no solution to my situation. RESPONSE TO THE OWNER: I expect you to twist the situation to lesson your embarrassment at your complete harshness towards a costumer. To correct a few things: -I didn't not call the policy "stupid", I apologized for my confusion to the policy as it seems "silly" given my exact situation. After all every situation is unique in its own way. -Please do not pigeon hole me in having animosity toward my ex boyfriend I have not given you any indication to make such bold assumptions. - You did not 'hope I was calmer the second phone call" because I was never irate. My composure remained the same.
I dunno how to put this but the person working there made me felt really uncomfortable. Eye's on customers at all time and right when you walk in he ask what are you looking for. Made me felt really uncomfortable. Everything is over priced. I don't think I will be returning to this store.
Have purchased several rod / reel setups and various tackle over the years from HLS - always a fantastic experience in store. I am an amateur angler at best and staff goes out of their way to make you feel welcome and answer questions. Recommendations for tackle setups are offered and explained thoroughly. It was fantastic to get a lesson on weedless rigging and they took the time to make sure we got it right. Will be back and will continue to recommend others to visit HLS!
Was greeted in the store by the owner ray in a slightly hostile manner as I was confused about there sale section on their website I simply asked if they had any fly rods for sale because I was unsure of what was available, the owner seemed offended by this ? After apologizing to the owner multiple times he let it go but still felt very awkward. Another employee helped fit us in waders provided us excellent service stated he understood the confusion as other people have had the same issue. Now after dropping 700 + I look at my receipt to find that none of our product is listed on the receipt I tried to return some fluro as it cost me 40 dollars for 2 spools of 50yrd fluro I normally pay 12.99 cad each for not a big deal but they declined returning the line and offered store credit we had just purchased the line minutes prior. I couldn't help but feel they were up selling . Not an overall great first experience but nonetheless it is a nice small fishing store with good product they fit my girlfriend into waders and she is happy with them so I am grateful for that at least.
Would have at least forgive them for not accepting purchases under 10 with a credit card.... Until you realize the prices are exceptionally high for outdated tackle. Also, the staff or manager is rude if you're not a regular customer. The positive reviews here are fabricated. Their business name speaks for itself - you get tricked into buying anything from this shop. You'd find better selection, prices, and someone more respectful at Sail or Natural Sports. Update: your comments speaks for itself. All you do is belittle customers with your smug attitude. There are people who look for advice, but all you do is take and not give, because you know nothing about the industry and products you are selling. Keep "learning" from your customers.
Would prefer to give zero stars
Arron provided us an incredible day of learning and fun. He was very knowledgeable, and the cadence of the day was pretty much perfect. We enjoyed spending some time casting in the park, and the rest of the day on the river was continually informative, fun, and hands-on. Highly recommended!
Hook Line & Sinker/The First cast carries the best selection of fly fishing and tying items anywhere in Ontario. They offer great and friendly customer service, and will quickly bring in any item that is not in stock at the store. I would happily continue shopping here versus other stores.
Great service, I will DEFINITELY return!!
Great tackle shop. Carries all the best brands, more top quality tackle and gear here than anywhere else in Ontario. A must visit.
They have an excellent selection of fly tying materials.I have not done enough business yet to support a full 5 star rating though.
Ray has a great personality and is always willing to take his time when you have a question or a request.
Sorry Ray but you never fixed it and I don't want to go back again to get my gear fixed for $$$ to much rather go to kings way!!/or Get bent both take time to treat you right and not lead you to out of date stuff there trying to sell not going back again Ray sorry! But not really.
EXCELLENT SELECTION, service, and friendly staff. GREAT place with just about everything you will need. Cannot ask for better help, always FAST with answering questions and VERY thorough with the response. Saw them assist many others as well, SAME support for everyone.
Superb customer service - I ordered a pair of custom waders through Hook, Line, and Sinker and they were attentive and provided me updates at each step. I made a conscious decision not to order my waders through a large retailer and to support a local business. Fantastic decision as their service was A+.
A buddy and me took a shot at this place the other day, driving 45 min to go to the shop without any prior knowledge. I am fairly new to fly fishing and the level of direction I received was spectacular! Very helpful and apparent that he took interest in teaching to the "new guys". I will definitely be returning whenever passing through the area! Highly recommend!
Horrible service, guy was on the phone the whole time. Would have been in and out in 30 seconds but the guy was too busy talking on the phone that I had to wait 20 minutes for him to check me out. Then when he finally did he rushed me out of the store as if I was inconveniencing him. He had three guys standing around in the store as well and they weren’t customers. Friends I guess? One of the guys was rude to my wife. Just an awful experience. Not only will I not go back I’m going to go out of my way to get other people not to go.
I had bought a rod and reel combo a few weeks ago. the process was easy and fast and the staff was knowledgeable and nice. very satisfied overall and would absolutely recommend to anyone who asked.
Best fishing shop in guelph. Owner is amazing, knows tons about fishing. Even carp..lol. Need a rod? They have it or can order it in. Walls and walls of lures and fishing accessories. Just go. You wont be disappointed.
Hi Ray, The pkge arrived today. Thanks for your thoughtful gift and kind words. I sure like your personal touch as i really feel like you appreciate my business. Too bad we are not closer but this is working. Looking forward to interacting with you to improve my fishing and tying skills.
Worth the Drive to Guelph Great Customer Service Fantastic selection of Gear,Rods,Lures, etc My personal experience, first time I ever walked into this very fine establishment I felt welcomed
Great selection and very service oriented store. Many great events to help learn more about the sport.
I searched for a certain product everywhere and could not find it. I took one trip to Hook Line & Sinker and was able to order the product on the spot, get more information on the product and it arrived 4 days later, ready to be picked up. Kind, helpful, knowledgable and extremely fast service!
A great fishing shop. They have everything you could imagine. Knowlegadable staff too
This is by far the best fishing store out there! As a little kid my grandfather took me fly fishing ever weekend. With a dream of catching the amazing sought after resident brown trout or steelhead we worked very hard but were never successful. I took a break from fishing during university but recently started up again this past summer. I originally went to Ray’s store just to buy a couple leaders, however, I ended up staying and chatting about the art of how to catch a resident brown trout on the fly (turns out I was doing it all wrong). Ray made my passion for fishing resurface and I began visiting him once, twice, even three times a week to buy the appropriate gear and ask a plethora of questions. Ray has always taken the time to give me honest and real answers to my questions and has never forced a sale on me. With the help of Ray and his store I have now caught over 10 resident brown trout just this past summer and my first steelhead this past weekend. I can honestly say I could not have done it without the help from Ray. If you want a store with endless gear, that will answer all your questions and help improve you as a fisherman, this is the store for you!
This is the second beginner fly fishing course I have taken, the first 10+ years ago through a different store in the area. With Aaron the instructor I found this course much more informative. It is one thing to learn basic casting but just as important is to learn how to read the river to get an understanding of were the fish may be, how to check what the fish could be feeding on and river etiquette. I feel a lot more competent this time that I could get out on the water on my own. Aaron was more than helpful in discussing various pros and cons of what is needed to start fly fishing without breaking the bank. Ray was very helpful in the store concerning what he would recommend and helping with any purchases. The follow up “E” mail concerning your strong and weak points and hints to improve was a nice touch. I highly recommend First Cast, if you decide to take up fly fishing you just may start a long beneficial relationship with the staff at First Cast. Though I may be one and a half hours away, if I continue fly fishing this will be my “go to store”. Thanks Aaron and Ray.
Ray was great in his choices of fly making materials, and my husband left a very happy fly maker. (Thank you, from his wife for making this Covid shutdown a little better), highly recommend going there, I'm sure we will be back
I love the service that we get here. It's out of the way (we live in Burlington, ON) but it's worth the drive in. If you are looking for knowledgeable, caring support, while working within your budget to get you set up, visit HLS/FCFS. I can promise you, you will not be disappointed.
Don't like this store at all. I was asking for fly reel repairing. I left my reel in this store. Then tomorrow they told me they could not fix my reel and charged me 15$ the reason was the guy took time to look at it. I was so mad about this because I tried to repair my reel at home. I just open it and put it back no more than 1 minute !!!!! they charged me 15$$$$$ I am not saying their time is not valuable but because I spend 15$ for nothing happened on my reel. bad reputation for this store. I will never go to this store again!!
Received a fishing rod for my birthday. Didn't even get to use it before the handle on the reel came off and fell into the water. Took it in to see if they could replace the handle. They were able to fix it for a low price and very quickly! Was very pleased with the service and staff!
Ray was fantastic to deal with! He did not try and up sell any products. I told him I was looking for a rod and reel for my 6 year old and he gave me a great and affordable option for a combo kit that my son would grow into. Even during COVID and only being able to do curb side pickup, Ray is extremely enthusiastic about his job. This is my second time buying from Ray, and from here on out I will not go else where for any of my fishing needs. Thank you Ray, I look forward to walking into your store after this lockdown.
Good services..knowable staff.lots to choose from
Great store. Lots of hard to find tackle and great customer service.
This is an incredible store. Great selection on speciality gear and also basic gear for pretty much all target species. I have bought 2 nice pins and some things from the used but not abused section lately...I drive in from Toronto and am always greeted by staff with open arms, and a handshake. Do not listen to the negative reviews as I assume they are all written from the same guy. Ray can't wait to come back, lol next time you need to give me a new swipe card as mines getting old! Top notch store service and knowledgeable staff
Took a centre pin reel in for new brgs and experienced some issues with the reel. Called Ray from the river about the problem, he says bring it back and he fixed it with top notch service. Allways more than happy to help anytime I'm visiting the store.
Very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly
They have everything you need for fishing and the owner is very helpful!
