Love their seafood! Not a big restaurant and they don’t take reservations. Services is ok, take your order bring your food give you the Bill because they are very busy. Just come for the seafood that’s fresh and well prepared.
Lovely seafood selection. Excellent service and food.
Excellent meal. Great service. Loved the generous Serving of coleslaw served on a cabbage leaf instead of those black cup things. We’ll see you soon.
Service
The calamari is fantastic, the best I've ever had. Prices are alright, ambiance could use work. Probably one of the better spots for seafood in town, especially on a modest budget. Recommended for those fishy cravings!

Really loved the crab cakes from the Merivale Fish Market restaurant! It eas flavorful, good texture and had a nice crunch. Also, really loved the fish and chips. It’s a classic but so delicious. It came with a pile of fries and coleslaw. The batter was light and crispy, and the fish was flaky and buttery. It was savoury and very tasty.
I had to order to accommodate some dietary restrictions. So, baked cod with rice and vegetables. The meal wasn't hot except for the awful coating on the fish. The rice was bland and the vegetables were stringy. I ate what I could of the fish but basically left the balance of the meal. No one came to ask if our meals were okay and when someone came to collect for the meal, I mentioned that the meal wasn't satisfactory. The person didn't respond. Not a good experience. Sincerely, Ruby
First time getting takeout from Merivale Fish Market/Seafood Grill (we had dined in a few times in the past, pre-pandemic). Cannot speak highly enough! Top notch quality, everything was super fresh and delicious. AND I learned that there is sushi on the weekends! We'll be doing a lot more of this now that we've been "wow'ed. Excellent!!!
The food was delicious. We all agreed that the catch of the day might have been the best fish and chips we ever had. My white wine was forgotten but other than that, service was good.
Covid compliant. Excellent service. Great food. I'll be eating there again ... Soon.
We ordered the crab cakes, paella, and fish and chips. The sea food is excellent and the wait staff is friendly, although very busy. My paella didn't have any chorizo in it but was rectified quickly by the staff as soon as i mentioned it. The food is good, I personally feel that I may not have made the best menu selection. Will return to try something new. My husband loved the fish and chips.
Came here as Narcity said their fish and chips is a must try in Ottawa. Like many, have had many fish and chips before. Had the cod catch of the day. The batter is very light, very different from others. Not flaky but falls right off on your fork yet crispy. Home made tar tar sauce and coleslaw, which was good, but just needs a touch more acidity to make you feel less bloated when done. Fries are average. Service is mediocre. Definitely not a restaurant quality service. Not rude, just not attentive. Come for the fish, not for big groups.
Great atmosphere, service exceptional and the food is delicious. The calamari and fish and chips has to be their classic. Calamari was nicely seasoned and crispy/chewy, ended up ordering a second plate of the appetizer before the main dish. I think this place will be my standard for fish and chips. I've had their seafood rice dish (paella), not too overwhelming in flavours, but rich and heavy on the assortment of seafood in it. The owner likes to walk around and chat and help serve the guests in this small establishment, it certainly puts a homey feel to it. The decor is nautically put together that included a beautiful mural of the Atlantic Canada, makes you feel like you're sitting on the shore.
I would have given a 5 star but I was extremely disappointed with the service. Three other tables came in about 15 minutes after us and they received their food first. I am giving a 4 star because the quality of the food is awesome!!! Extremely fresh and cooked to perfection. See you again soon and let's get you a 5 star next time.
This was our second time here and we shall be back again soon. The fish and chips were quite good. My wife had the chowder as well. They have their own draft in cans made in collaboration with Cameron's and it's excellent.
Always delicious food and amazing kind staff that make you feel at home! The classic fish n chips are the best I’be ever tasted but don’t forget to ask about the chefs daily specials.
Amazing fish and chips! I had the catch if the day...2 PC cod and chips with home made coleslaw. The batter is very light and crispy Best fish and chips in town! Great service too! Was very busy on Friday at noon and it looked like everyone was enjoying their meals. The fish tacos and calamari also looked great
Amazing menu cooked perfectly and well priced! Great service, atmosphere, and location. The market side also has a lot of options you can cook at home or have them cook!
A great restaurant! We go there anytime we want to have a super healthy food that feels like a home made dish! The wait staff are very friendly. but the service is not what they focus on. This takes a way the full restaurant experience. But again you are there for healthy food! Highly recommend it.
We go here because it's guaranteed to be satisfying. My wife and I have been here so many times, we've lost track. But, we always remember how satisfying the meal was.
Quality and quantity of food very good. Staff professional and courteous. I've eaten here before and surely will again.
Everything really good, from the atmosphere to the food.
Wow - delicious and fresh! Absolutely incredible, we tried out the Merivale Fish Market one weekend night after driving by several times and always seeing a line up. We weren't disappointed! The food is incredibly delicious, I had the seafood pasta which came with a variety of scallops, prawns and clams in an incredible sauce. We also had the crab cakes as an appy and the carrot cake for desert - both were stand outs. The place does get very busy, so service can be a bit patchy, but the food came very quickly. Highly recommend, we'll definitely be back.
I was craving an authentic fish soup and this Bouillabaisse exceeded my expectations. The rest of the orders were delicious as well and the service is really nice.
I love their food and they are friendly but they totally do not comprehend Gluten Intolerance. I have gotten sick every time I go. Super unfortunate since they do make lovely food. Cake cakes are amazing.
I ordered trout & the waitress said you could have it done anyway you liked so I chose blackened and when the bill came it said grouper and it was a $4 charge to have it blackened but she did not inform me of this when I ordered it. And the waitress also said that's what the bill will say but it is trout that I had which I found kind of odd. My glass of wine was $14 and I do find the portions are a lot smaller than they used to be.
Have always loved this place. The food is excellent and the service top notch. Their patio set up during the pandemic is awesome- felt safe and had a lovely time.
My girlfriend and I had a great experience last night. The atmosphere was relaxed, the service was good and the food was Mama Mia! The clam chowder was just as I'd hoped it would be, calamari was on point but my entreé was what put the Mia in Mama Mia! I had the Pescatore pasta which was so delicious that I didn't even freak out just now when my phone autocorrected Pescatore to Peachtree 4 times in a row! I tried the fish & chips my girlfriend ordered and that was also lovely. I plan on coming back before the new year with my parents.
Don't come here if you expect good service. Our waitress literally came to the table once for an order and once to bring our food. When asked for drinks or cheese for our pasta the waitress simply never came, however, she made 8 stops to a table beside us just to chat with regulars. When asked again for the drinks and cheese it still never came. This service was incredibly poor which is a shame because the food was excellent. I will not be going back.
had take out the other day. First time since the pandemic hit. Though we love to eat in. Was delicious as usual.
I had fish and chips. The haddock was Excellent but my fries were lukewarm. I thought the coleslaw and tarter sauce was pretty good. My first time there and I will go back but not anytime soon.
Great service and excellent d Food. Best fish and chips that I have ever had in 50 years.
This restaurant is a hidden gem! it really puts establishments such as red lobster to shame! they have weekly specials that are definitely a must. their chowder and crab cakes are a must! this place is definitely recommended to all. enjoy!!
Take out
It's a small little place with only a few tables, but the flavour of all the dishes is huge! Excellent fish and chips at a reasonable price ($15-16) for the portions you get. Everyone inside is friendly and the atmosphere is very comforting. Will be returning!
Went here for a second time with the boyfriend. Tried the crab cakes. Best I have ever had. Stuck to what will be my usual order of haddock and chips. Food was sizzling when served. Amazing taste. Great seafood. Hot and fresh. Delicious! If you want great seafood, here is the place to go. Staff are amazing and friendly. Also quick! Come here. You won't be disappointed!
Fantastic night out at The Seafood Grill! Tempura shrimp, calamari were both great. Paella was best I've had since a trip to Spain many years ago. Will absolutely be back to this great place!
How can you not love the food here? Flavorful and divine. The best calamari I've ever had. On busy nights, the wait staff may come to take your order more often than necessary but it's understandable when there's a line out the door. However, the friendly and laidback atmosphere more than makes up for it. The wine list is well balanced and pairs well with the menu items. The menu isn't huge but just big enough to satisfy most tastes without taking forever to look over and choose. Definitely a returning favorite.
I don't remember the last time I had calamari this tasty!! The daily special (grilled fish with shrimp, rice and apple slaw) was to die for!! Even their house lager (Cameron's brewery from Oakville) was a perfect complement. I will certainly be coming back again.
It was very good. The batter was light and crispy. Fish was fresh.
Lunch
Amazing local seafood restaurant. The clam chowder was creamy and had a generous amount of clams. The crab cakes were crispy from the outside and moist in the inside but slightly salty. The amazing sauce balanced out the saltiness of the crab cakes. We got fish and chip. Good servings of both fries and fried fish. The French fries were not very crunchy but nice and fluffy in the inside. The fried fish was very well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The catch of the day was red snapper which was less flaky than the haddock but more moist and flavorful than haddock. Like other reviewers said, the waiting staff don't regularly refill your water when your cup is empty, but we found they were readily available for us when we needed to ask for more water. There is a bit of a wait time for main courses so ordering appetizers helped with the wait.
A+++ service and food was delicious, reasonably priced as well. HIGHLY recommended!
Great place, my daughter went to high school with the owner's son. Kind of refreshing to eat at a non franchised restaurant. The "Linguine Pescatore" is my favorite, but it is a BIG meal. Also like the halibut fish and chips.
This review is only for the restaurant section, as we have not had the opportunity to shop in the market section yet. Be sure to get here early for the weekends, as they are usually very busy. They offer a good selection of drinks, and excellent and fresh seafood. For the quality you get and the service on hand, prices are also very reasonable. Only thing I wish they had was more parking space but that's really not on them. Overall, an excellent choice for seafood.
Unreal seafood restaurant!! I can’t resist the fish and chips! Very fresh and and very delicious! Service was great and on time! I will return many times!
Great creative twists on dishes. Much more than just your fish and chips offered here.
Cozy little place. Menu isn't massive but had I still had many good options. I had the haddock and chips. Best fried haddock I have had in Ottawa. Fish tasted fresh and not overly greasy. That's hard to get right. Price wasn't bad quality/quantity but, if they could shave off a dollar or so, I would consider this a fantastic bargain. Will definitely return.
Small place, fast service. Had halibut and chips - they were perfect. Slaw tasted a little old, but it is possible some like it that way. Crispy fish, golden chips, and the tartar sauce was very tasty as well. Yumm.
The food is tasty and reasonably priced. Service is cheerful and competent. The ambience is more roadhouse than fine dining, but this is a good place for a "too pooped to cook" meal.
Excellent food. Nice restaurant, friendly staff and owners. Definitely going back for the delicious food. Tony's bouillabaise is consistently wonderful. March 13, 2021 So glad to be able to dine in again and what a perfect start with the best meal I have probably had in the past year. We had excellent calamari, light and crispy and absolutely delicious. The portion sizes were very generous. We shared crab cakes with a mango sauce. The crab cakes were light and flaky and clearly made with excellent crab. They just melted in your mouth. We follow that with some excellent fish-and-chips. The fish was crispy on the outside and light and flaky on the inside. We opted for they half fries half salad option. The fries were perfectly cooked, crispy and golden brown. We opted for Caesar salad which was generously coated with dressing and included excellent croutons. The most perfect meal which we both enjoyed with some glasses of wine and beer. Everything was perfect and I can't wait to go back.
Fabulous food! I had the simple halibut and chips and it was awesome. I even started with the shrimp and crab spring roll and it was amazing! You've got to try this place! There are not many tables and they don't take reservations for fewer than six, so make sure you get there in lots of time. The staff are wonderful, too. Also, since they are part of the fish market next door, you just have to stop there for a purchase or two on your way out.
Food is amazing. The portion was generous and thick cut fries went really well with the catch of the day. Servers could pay a little more attention, but with a full house, we got decent service. Will be back
We ate bouillabaisse in Marseille and Saint Tropez. The one at Seafood Grill is one of the best we had, not to mention the very decent price! The paella we had in Spain, has nothing bad to say about the paella cooked at this family restaurant. Oh, I forgot the calamari! Excellent We are going back for sure and bring some good friends. The food there deserves to be shared with people you love.
Best seafood in town a must dine in.
The food is excellent. Fresh and well prepared. The atmosphere is casual and the owners obviously like what they do. We had a great time. Best Caesars anywhere and a great meal.
This cozy restaurant is amazing! Every Friday and Saturday night they offer sushi and it is super delicious and fresh. If you stop in you must try their spring roll - it's the biggest spring roll you have ever seen and super Delicious!!
Service was spotty. The fish and chips were good.
I enjoyed this restaurant until I became gluten intolerant. I find that they will adapt a dish to make it gluten free but you must insist that the server explain to the cooks that they avoid all flour, including dredging. I would really like it if they had a set of dishes that are noted as gluten-free and also some gluten free pasta as an alternative for people like me.
Service
Best fish and chips in ottawa. We order halibut ... nothing fresher
One of my to go places to eat. When I am in the mood for seafood their fish and chips fill the need to perfection. Their staff is always attentive and make the visit feel like a welcome home. Thank you for all your hard work.
We dropped in on a Tuesday for lunch and you walk through the market first, then into the restaurant. There was a strong fishy smell in the market, sure, it's a fish market, but fresh fish does not have an 'odor'. The food was good, we ordered two of the day's specials and an order of fish, with a salad instead of chips. Fish tacos were good, crusted snapper was yummy. On the downside, the place was not as clean as it could have been, and there was that smell.
Best seafood in town! Love the shrimp tacos and tony's soup
We had a lovely dinner here. The food is fresh and very tasty. The fish and chips seemed the most popular dish even though i had one of the specials, a blackened trout with veggies and roasted potatos. They only take reservations for groups of 6 or more. We went early and could sit down right away. Parking can be a little tight.
Wow! Been a while since we had a great seafood dinner. Highly recommend. The family loved the good. The wife had paella. The son had Pescadore (noodles and mussels). I had fish and chips. Paella had a great subtle spicy flavor. The Pescadore had a smooth tomato sauce. The fish and chips were light and heavenly. One thing is a definite must have...the appetizer calamari. Loved the breading and the flavor. Highly recommend. Unfortunately no reservations taken. So get there early.
Have been here again and again since we found this jewel of Ottawa's seafood restaurants. Beware they don't take reservations and evenings are packed. But lunch is quieter and the same team in the kitchen. Food is out ordinary and the daily specials are indeed special. Best.
Food is consistently great, visit after visit, year after year. The chowder is sublime, the fish and chips likely one of the best around, and the paella delicious. With the fish market right next door, you can't go wrong.
You can not get tastier Halibut then this with great service and reasonable prices
Best fish and chips in Ottawa! Wonderful staff, amazingly fresh food that tastes phenomenal!
Lunch
Beware: crazy long lines to get a table. The seafood in my pasta was super fresh and tasty! Huge portions. The fish and chips and catches of the day are amazing here - best in the city. I just found the atmosphere too loud and the tables were too close to each other. The waitress was beyond slow with water refills - we even had to remind her twice. The food was great, but the service and atmosphere could be improved.
This restaurant is almost an institution in this part of town. If you really like seafood that is fresh, no doubt this place is definitely it. A small serving of clam chowder is packed with ingredients that is just right. The calamari is delightfully tasty and not overly coated, the sauce that came with it makes it just right and the halibut.... yummy to the bite.
They have the best fish and chips in town, also the calamari is to die for. The food look and taste fresh, the tartar sauce and the coleslaw is ???????? surely, we will be back again!
Usually have a good experience here, but today was awful. My husband ordered a lobster at a very high price, it came out watery and barely warmed. He informed the server about it, but she was unapologetic and did not seem to care at all. I ordered Halibut and Chips, but received haddock instead. I informed the same server saying it was fine since I was charged for the haddock but thought she should know. She only shrugged and said "Well it's cheaper". Very disappointed today
Best fish and chips in Ottawa
Excellent food. Friendly staff.
Fresh fish and staff is friendly. The chef showed us how to properly cut salmon and tuna for sushi at home!
Good choice for fresh seafood. OK selection of craft beers. Always reliable quality.
Yummy sushi ???? yummy fish tacos ???? amazing clam chowder!!!! All great food, super clean and safe. Best fish market in Ottawa.
I have given them 4 Stars for a specific reason. I ordered haddock and chips as a take out. I waited a few extra minutes for it to be ready and I have no qualms about it just because the food was delicious however I did not get any cutlery, condiments or napkins. Hmmm... takeout food with the proper instruments to eat it. Try eating coleslaw with fingers sitting in a parking lot before making the trek back to Toronto. It wasn’t pleasant but my hunger pains trumped everything else and I sat there eating medieval style. ???? It was quite a sight. Once again, the food was delicious and I will certainly visit them again but this time it will be a sit in dinner. ????
Decent Seafood! Lobster Poutine was good.
On April 30 I ordered some fish from The Seafood Grill. It was amazingly good and delicious.Thanks. I recommend this place in Ottawa, Nepean.
Best halibut and chips ever!!! Haven’t tried any other fish because the halibut and chips is perfect every time. Had fish and chips at Whalesbone and these were absolutely just as good and much less expensive. That being said, whalesbone is a fancy dinner out. More of an event. But for great food quality for lunch or casual dinner, Merivale Grill is my choice.
Dine in
Ok but not a special or a wow. Food came out very quickly after ordering. The fish tasted fresh not old or fishy. Grilled fish was cooked well, coated with a mix of seasoning but nothing unique. Deep fried fish had a good batter, but not super crisp on the outside and melting on the inside. Frying oil was clean and didn't taste old, one of the key things about fried food. Service was slow at first. Took a while to receive menus. Received our food quickly after ordering but no cutlery, seasoning or napkins at the table. Presentation: not an eye catcher, the pictures explain it. Question is, would I go there again to try other items from the menu or would I spend my $20 across the street to try a different restaurant? Not sure.
Nice seafood restaurant. Great wall paintings. Food was delicious. The chowder is one of the best in the city. Wish one of the servers didn't spend his time talking to his friends at the next table. No issue with making small talk but we could have done without the swearing especially as we had our young kids with us. Slightly ruined the experience but the food and atmosphere is great.
