Decent food. Service is slow at cheeses. Takeout seems to get a priority over tables seated. But the fish wasn’t greasy tonight and the chips were good. I guess that’s the important part. Sticky tables really need a good stripping though. Cleanup tags ain’t cutting it. It’s built up.

A perfectly fine place to start got seafood adventures as tourist, and a regular stalwart for the locals. I went here to eat eight years ago when I first visited St John's, and eight years later this location hasn't changed much. The menu has been updated, but the decor, friendly service, and fresh fish and chips brought me back to that first visit years ago. It's worth a visit to taste the tradition.

For real Newfoundland Fish 'n Chips you have to visit Ches's on Freshwater Road. While Ches's now has multiple other locations (where the fish 'n chips can be just as good) nothing beats the character and charm of the original.

I had the seafood platter (shrimp scallops and fish) I was very disappointed and didn't like it and maybe the reason was because of high expectation from someone advertising them selves as "famous fish and chips". But before food let's talk about the restaurants there was 3 or 4 tables full of left overs that the server didn't clean them even when I left the restaurant they were still dirty tables I guess they once a night before they close

It was a 900 meter walk from where I was staying to Ches's...mostly up hill. The pre-meal exercise was needed though! It was recommended by a friend that I have the fries and dressing with gravy... I added some cod because, well, why not. The meal was great. Good value for money. The staff lovely. Highly recommended.

Ordered dinner for two. After waiting what seemed like a long time we got our poutine, onion rings, and stuffed cod. Poutine was good. Lots of gravy and real cheese curds. Stuffed cod was fine although it was sitting in a lot of liquid. As for the onion rings they had no flavour at all. We were waiting for the waitress to come back so we could let them know we weren't satisfied with the onion rings. We figured we'd get a new batch. Waitress never did come back despite passing our table at least five times. After we were done eating we waiting at least 10 mins to give them a chance in case they were just really busy. We were going to order dessert but since the waitress didn't come to us we didn't feel like going up to the cash and asking for dessert. In the end I went to cash and I finally got asked how the food was. The onion rings were taken off the bill after I was told they don't season the batter. Which would be fine if I could taste the onion. Probably won't be back.

Customer service was great. Had onion rings, two piece fish with the snarl Poutine on the side. Snarl was great as well as fries, rings and fish batter was very bland with next to no taste on the rings. Had to add copious amounts of seasoning salt. Servings are huge.

Here's the deal. Your not going to the ritz. But if you are looking for some really good fish & chips than you got to go to this place. You have to order it with dressing, gravy and vinegar. It is really to die for, they just don't make this kind of food back home. Not the healthiest choice, but what the heck when I'm on vacation I love to eat, and this place definitely makes the shortlist. Service has always been good, and the atmosphere is ok, like a traditional Newfoundland restaurant not fancy, but really good food.

They could have charged me more money by calling Skip the dishes support to contact me but they didn't and I got Tartar sauce.. Barf.. ???????? AND !!! My fried shrimp dinner that I ordered with a poutine.. They packed it all in one take out box.. so I got a fried shrimp poutine.. Double Barf ???????? Like seriously, Why would you pack crispy fried shrimp in with gravy and cheese curds????? It's too bad, I was really looking forward to fried shrimp !! Now I can't eat them.. what a waste of money.

Ches's is better than Poppies in London UK hands down. After having fish and chips here, be prepared that everywhere else is second best. The batter is light and the fish is the actual star here. You have a choice of sitting in the diner style area or the more formal dining area. There was this other table of guests that rudely stared - no surprise as they're not locals but from Northern Ontario but other than that service was great.

Pros: Servings are on the large side, hence fulfils the glutton inside me. The fries are the sweet potatoes that get blackened (caramelized black) when fried. Friendly staff, with quick service. The menu's variety is good for a fish and chips restaurant as they have tasty chicken varieties. Cons: the restaurant's decor is a little old. But my tastebuds don't care. I'm going back.

Ordered small FDG...it was a bowl of mush! Like leftover chips literally stirred together with dressing and gravy..there was do much gravy it was like FDG stew! Besides that we waited over half an hour and watched 2 other tables that came in after us get served. I had to flag down the watress and remind her we were there before these other tables. We are hard core ches's customers from freshwater Rd where it's always amazing! Will never go back tgeet again. I actually told the lady at the register about the FDG soup..she took it off our bill ..most of it was still in the bowl or plate...sorry guys a real bad experience...my husband's fish and chips was very greasy and didn't seam fresh...to us it seemed they forgot about us and just grabbed whatever ,...maybe left over food and threw it carelessly on the plates, wish I had to of taken a pic.????

I’ve been coming to this particular location for years, I drive past other locations because this one is normally the best but after today I will never give them another cent of my money. I got an order delivered a few nights ago, they messed it up no big deal, they offered a replacement meal at a different time, which i cashed in on today. That was messed up! So I call and am told I have to wait to be sent out my missing food, while my fries get cold cause there is other delivery’s, don’t matter that I already paid for the food they messed up. I even paid the delivery charge a 2nd time! Never again absolutely horrible customer service and common sense from this crew today

Some of the worst food i've had in a long while. I'd heard only great things about Ches's so i was expecting good fast food. But the fish and its batter was incredibly bland and dry (it actually scoured my toungue as i ate). Honestly it was almost like eating cardboard, or like when you accidently eat some paper towel or wax paper that your sandwhich is wrapped in - there was literally no flavour. And the fries were awful as well, absolutely bland and incredibly greasy. Though i have to admit, the service was nice and quick and they fried everything in front of me, so at least it was warm.

I'm from Nova Scotia and I've been to Newfoundland twice once to gander and once recently to St. John's. I always make sure to include the best fish and chips at an Unbeatable price. Make sure you get the gravy. Ganders location has daily specials where the one in St John's doesn't seem to. If you find yourself in gander on I believe a Monday you can get 2pc fish and chips for 9.98!

During my trip, my friends & my followers told me that I have to go to Che's to try its famous fish n chips and I must order the dressing. When I first heard it, I was like "What? How does salad dressing works well with fish n chips?". Apparently, when I asked the friendly server, she told me dressing is somewhat like a stuffing with herbs and grains of onions. She recommended me to order fish n chips with dress plus gravy. Although she told me everyone has a different way to eat the fish n chips but she recommends me to pour the dressing on the fries and then pour the gravy on top of it, it was definitely a great suggestion. The server was amazing, super friendly and helpful. I was hoping to try the cod tongues, a delicacy here in Newfoundland, however, it's not in season in winter so it wasn't available. I guess I will have to come another time. The batter of the fish is light but crispy, fish is fresh, when they don't specify the fish, it's mostly a cod fish. I ordered a bottle of Iceberg beer made by Quidi Vidi Brewery and it was LIT! So smooth and so good! I highly recommend you to try Ches's Fish and Chips.
