I know good fish and chips and these were beyond good by a long way..
Owners are super friendly and welcoming. Fish is solid. Chips are bang on. Now I'm super curious how delicious their Chinese food is. Two full halibuts means it needs a bit more tartar sauce. ????
Food was good fish was well cooked their spring rolls were awsome
We had the 'combo for two' here a few nights ago and it was delicious. Very friendly staff, great location and reasonably priced. Will come back if we are ever in Victoria again.
What a surprise. Excellent Fish and chips
It was amazing service the maitre d was totally amazing the food was to die for we had the hot pot oh my God it was amazing I would definitely recommended and go back again and take my girlfriend 10 out of 10
All I can say is... WOW!! My girlfriend and I visited while on holiday in Victoria. Based on the LOOK of the food in other review photos, I knew this place would be the real deal. After walking by the restaurant by accident, we marched in. Immediately, we were greeted by the very friendly lady of the house who let us sit wherever we liked. An enthusiastic "YES!" was the response when I asked if they carried Mushy Peas to go with our Fish N' Chips. That was a great sign right there. A few minutes later, a lovely presentation of a meal was delivered to our table with a smile. The food was SUPER FRESH (we were informed that it was still Halibut Season) and the chips were dynamite!!! If you like fresh food, with an authentic British style, along with a wonderful dining experience... Then go here, now!! Super happy we did, and I'm sure you will as well ????
Cozy. Decor isn't great but that's what makes it cozy and comfortable. Food was decent. Service very friendly. No english menu, but made me like it more. Cant wait to come back again.
Menu says cod fish but it was substituted with dory fish. Tartar was not house made. Quite disappointing for a fish and chips shop.
Walked by this place for many years. Decided to pop in … a friend of ours let us know that they had recently updated the decor. Can’t say the degree of improvement, but it was well light and with booth style seating. Carpet was still dingy and a bit sketchy for a restaurant. We had the 2 person fish and chips combo. A piece of halibut and a piece of cod. Batter was a bit heavier than my preference but the fish was cooked perfectly. Nice. Also came with 4 prawns. All together, a good package deal. There are some Asian dishes on the menu. This reminded me of why we never ventured in … it was a strange place and menu.
We had the fish and chips + onion rings! Holy smokes, thats some serious bang for your buck!
The food is great and the prices are reasonable. Very nice staff.
I loved the fish and chips and the service was great! Will definitely be back again, so happy and full leaving here.
Amazingly great fish and chips! The service is amazing as well. The fries are like no other. You think "the fries? They're just fries". I thought the same thing till I had them. This is by far the best fish and chips in Victoria.
Having enjoyed the fish and chips on many other visits, this time I branched out and had Stir Fried Green Veg + Mushrooms dish. It was soooo good! Served piping hot and had a garlic sauce, I will definitely order this again.
Service
Mine was great. My wife's wasn't cooked all the way through. The server was very friendly and attentive. We'll have to try again on another night to get a better opinion. Mine was very tasty.
Not a fancy restaurant, but clean and family friendly service in a heritage style building. The best fish and chips we've had in BC. Two generous portions of halibut with the perfect batter, in house tartar sauce, and fries for $19.99. More food than I could eat in one sitting, and better quality food for less dollars than Milestones hands down.
We ordered cod and onion rings plus a bowl of clam chowder. Fish is cooked, onion rings are crispy, didn't have to wait too long as some others have mentioned. The clam chowder though...when it first landed on our table, it looked like it was simply thickened by a lot of cornstarch. Then there's massive amount of shredded chicken, which got me quite confused. Gave it a try, had a spoonful of it. Wow, it was like pasty colored chicken water that's thickened with cornstarch. It was so disgusting we had to send it back right away. They would've been better off microwaving us a bowl of canned soup. Waitress took it away and apologized, which wasn't her fault at all. She then offered us a free drink. That's my experience here. Would I recommend anyone to come? Hell no! I am giving 2 stars only because the fried items were mediocre.
I’m sooooo disappointed! Look at the meat color.. why are they cooking such terrible food like this for customers. It’s such an awful experience
Fish and chips was okay. Seems like they are trying to do too much in one place. Is an asian restaurant that serves fish & chips.
Delicious food in the heart of downtown Victoria. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere & the service is very friendly.
You can stand in line outside with a bunch of tourists at the famous fish and chips place or you can go to the cheaper, local spot. The owner is super nice and excitedly told me that they had halibut back in stock so I got one piece plus fries for $14. It was super yummy and the fries were perfect. Highly recommended. They accept credit cards.
Terrible fish and chips. They are flavourless and have a eraser type consistency. The calamari was not bad though
Best fish in chips in the city - not even close. Sorry Red Fish, Dead Fish... Top three international - London proper included. Most underrated restaurant I've ever found - I can only guess that people are eating here and rating lie to keep the crowds away. Best in Vic. Second best in Canada. Third best in the world that I've found from pretty extensive sample size. I might eat too much fish and chips....
tasty fried fish!high quality halibut, highly recommend????
Sadly, one of the worst dining experiences we've had in Victoria. Service was poor, food was not great. Overall, pretty depressing to be honest.
Great fish and chips!!! They also have a Chinese menu which is amazing!! Under new management, check it out❤
I was just looking for fish and chips to take away but when I saw the dish I couldn't resist and ate it straight away. The waitress (owner?) was absolutely brilliant and so nice and I felt so welcomed and she didn't even mind it was close to closing time.
Nice, fresh and hot. Light batter and great tartar. Not the location you may think, but excellent more than four stars for sure.
Absolutely delicious, the best on the island.
This place is a hard NO. Fail, fail, fail. First, pretty much had to seat ourselves and get our own menu. Should have left right then. Then, we waited so long that we had to walk in and ask if there was table service or did we have to order what we wanted from the counter. Then, the server finally came, took our order (we ordered the dinner for two) and she asked if we wanted two orders. OMG. Then, while waiting for a LONG time, we noticed there were little flies drown in both white and apple cider vinegar dispensers on the table. Ugh. When we finally got our meals, we weren't provided any napkins or utensils. We thought they would return with them, but we eventually had to ask for them (we had already half eaten because it was getting frustrating). The meal was equally disappointing. Dry fish, soaking in oil and the yam fries (they were out of the Kennebec), were equally soaking and soggy from the oil. Too many fails to say this was a one-off, I'm afraid. I would give zero stars if that was an option...........
Best fish and chips. Good service too
Ordered the combo for two, lots of food, my girlfriend and I couldn’t finish it. The environment is nice, so does the staff. The food is ok.
Amazing little spot. Probably the best fish and chips I've ever had.
Good place for fish and chips, big pieces, good service…
Dine in
Craving some good halibut and chips. Nailed it. Flaky fish, light crisp batter, fresh tasting coleslaw not buried in dressing, and tasty tartar sauce. Service was warm and friendly.
honestly some of the better fish and chips I had while visiting BC recently. The staff is nice but the restaurant doubles as a hot pot place and can be busy and noisy. Personally lots of people and noise are not my thing.
Arrived at opening time but proprietor arrived ten minutes later. Good food but the dining area has a musty smell that could turn you off.
Service was good. Fish was crispy and flavourful but a little oily, the chips were delicious. My partner had an amazing tofu curry.
Whenever I crave fish and chips, Old Vic is my go to place.. Convenient location, fantastic and warm hearted local owners, great staff and also their fresh food is hard to beat! I have been in the restaurant before renos and what a great renovations they have done.. Keeping the old school feel with much cleaner and welcoming feel.. definitely be back! Great job guys!
The best fishnchips I have ever had! They have the authentic tartar sauce. Love it so much!!! And the service is awesome! The owner is very friendly.
Fish and chips were perfect and the coffee was amazing, was expecting restaurant coffee and pleasantly surprised by how smooth and fresh it was. Definitely will be returning.
Lunch
The spicy&beef noodle soups were amazing! Huge portions and lots of goodies in it. The restuarant is owned by nice Chinese couple who knows their food! The location is great to stop by when you were visiting downtown Victoria. Highly recommend!
Great new owners, continuing a well established tradition of quality dinning...must drop in and try their fish and chip!!!!
Fish was well battered and super hot when it got to the plate. Fries were nice and crunchy.
Surprisingly delicious. Chinese food AND fish n chips (halibut!). Both really good. Unpretentious. Friendly. Inexpensive. This is the place.
The take out fish and chips were some of the worst I've ever had. Not only was the food warm at best, but the chips were soggy and the fish was tasteless.
Can't say enough how wonderful the owners are. Of course good food is why you want to eat out but the service has to be equally as good. Here at Old Vic fish and chips the service is awesome. The owner is so wonderful she makes it feel like your visiting their home. Her husband has trained overseas and knows what fish and chips should taste like. We have tried both the fish and chips and the chinese food and are impressed with both. We love the warm welcome and will continue to support these wonderful owners who make eating out fun. I've been back several times just for a box of those delicious hand cut fries. Just don't tell my wife.
Best fish and chips I've had in a long time. Light crispy batter, perfectly cooked chips. Not greasy. Great service.
Had the fish and chips. Fish nicely seasoned and crunchy. Good service. Will return very good
Wasn’t sure by the looks of the place, but was happy we gave it a try. Staff was really friendly, place was clean, and the fish and chips was amazing, fresh, cooked to order, and a perfectly crispy!! The halibut f&c was so good!!
Meal type
Hosts are awesome. You will receive a warm welcome and service like no other. The food is nice and everything in here is simple but good.
Some of the best fish n chips I've ever had!
Really wonderful place to visit for good fish & chips. Great , friendly service & a diner atmosphere. Will definitely return!
One of the best halibut fish & Chips I've had in Victoria, Joy's fish & chips along with her slaw are amazing as well as her service. We'll be back for sure. Thank you????
The waitress must have the best smile in Victoria! The F&C are good too
Fresh fish not frozen. Good food no complaints.
Wonderful experience beyond my expect Delicious fish & chips
The fish and chips are good. However, I won’t dine in the restaurant. It took us an hour to be served. The clam chowder is horrible
Beautiful old building that shows it's age in a nostalgic way. Cod and prawns were excellent, tasty and well cooked. Halibut was overcooked and dry. Chips were hot and fresh. Pleasant staff.
Great food, good service
Awesome range of Traditional Chinese food, from chilli bullfrogs to their dim sum. The Chilli Chicken was phenomenal!
3 ⭐ for nostalgia.. Raised in Victoria BC since 1972. Came here with my grandfather in the seventies. Brought my own daughter here before shopping. They need to stick with fish and chips. Run down.
perfect fish and chips. I ordered a combo for 2. It is more than enough for two people. it comes with tartar sauce and coleslaw. the staff is also really nice.
Nice, clean, heritage design and so friendly service, food well made, well cooked, menu includes some asian dishes beside the famous and authentic fish&chips
The best fish and chips in downtown
We fully enjoyed our fish and chips dinner at Old Vic. The new owner Cindy truly maintains the excellent quality that has been a tradition since 1932. The previous owner is a good friend of Cindy. We are delighted that Cindy is keeping up the original recipe.
The cod was a bit bland but the halibut was tasty. Not sure what folks were complaining about in the other reviews as service was good.
Interesting decor and big portions! Menu is slightly confusing as it serves both fish and chips and Chinese food. We ordered the combo for two with both fish, chips and prawns. Food is kinda bland, we had to add a lot of seasoning and the fish is kind of dry too. Not too impressed.
I'm not one to leave bad reviews, however this place was so terrible I'm leaving one. I should have known when the server came to my table talking on his phone whilst taking my order I should have left... We ordered the halibut and chips and cod and onion rings. We waiting 40mins for our food to arrive and it was wrong. The fish was not cooked. We were not checked on once. Had to get our own cutlery and condiments it was honestly just the worst experience I've had. SAVE your time and money and literally go anywhere else as there are so many fantastic restraunts in ictoria.
Fish and chips were acceptable. Clam chowder was runny and bland. We were seated for over 45 minutes before being served, while other patrons received their orders. The staff failed to communicate wait times and avoided costumers. Staff prioritized Skip the Dishes orders. Do not eat in the restaurant itself
Uncooked fish, cold fries, horrible service. We arrived 3 p.m. on a Monday. There was one group of 4 at a table inside. There were two cafe tables outside, one piled with dirty dishes. We decided to sit outside but we wanted to let them know we were there so we stood in the doorway...for about 10minutes without being greeted and finally walked to the back counter of the huge empty restaurant to ring a bell. Finally a server came and sat us outside. We ordered and waited...and waited...and waited. This is fish and chips and the restaurant is empty. After about 25 minutes the server comes out ( while on his phone) and chucks some take out boxes on our table (We asked for the 2 piece cod and 2 piece halibut one w fries and one w onion rings.) He then left. He didn't bring cutlery, napkins or condiments. The fries were cold...not even warm...and he forgot the onion ring sub. As we got into the fish which was mediocre we realized it was rather slimy inside like snots and chose to ask for the bill. After taking forever and screwing up our order, we were still charged for everything, including the onion ring sub. Seriously this place was absolutely gross and filthy and the service was brutal. Oh yah...when we left...that other table outside still had not been cleaned off.
Very good rice noodle place! There is a Chinese menu which includes many traditional dishes and rice noodles. I have to have the rice noodle everytime :) there's also a hidden menu for all you can eat hotpot :)
The fries are a huge disappointment. Even my kids wouldn't eat them. I feel like a fish and chips place should have good fries. Also, the service was terrible.
Best fish and chips in town. Lots of fish and batter is spot on.
Very good fish and chips. Great service.
I went for Dinner with a Friend this past Wednesday We both ordered Halibut and Chips. We received Cod and Chips. The server came by to check on us. I said something must have been mixed up, this is Cod not Halibut. I showed her the inside but she still insisted it was Cod which i hate. She said we caught fish yesterday. I have been eating Halibut and Chips in Victoria for over 50 years. They put coupon`s in the Money Saver and then don`t honor them the next day they come out. We both payed for our Halibut (Cod ) Dinners. I took a Doggy bag home with me to have 2 Friends check Halibut or Cod . Both said Cod !
I ordered the dinner for two. Fish, chips, onion rings, prawns and spring rolls. They all tasted the same! Big disappointment.
Unbelievable I placed an order for delivery for 2 pieces of fish and chips and they deliver me 2 pieces of fish with a Caesar salad. And still charged me for the fries. Can someone please explain how 2 pieces of fish is $18.00 . Has to be the worst customer service I've ever had. And then the manager wants to swear at me. Good luck on business there bud. Maybe you should go back to whatever country you came from cause it's very clear you don't belong here.
Great fish N chips, wonderful service. Generous fish portions
All you can eat hot pot is the best ????
Very average fish and chips, not bad, but not incredible.
Our family loved the great fish and chips meal. Hutton whiskey sign caught our eye. The Hutton family!we didn't take pictures inside. We were at butchart gardens and city hall.
Nice Fish&Chips located in the downtown area. I ordered Cod with fries, cod is crispy and soft inside. The fries portion is huge. We were serviced by a young gentleman, very friendly and welcoming. If you are looking for authentic British-style fish and chips. Check it out.
Don’t waste your money, go to a proper fish and chip place. Fish was really greasy and fries were hard as rocks (almost lost a filling). Some one mentioned it was cosy! More like run down and in need of some upgrades.
Amazing felt like they cooked just for me If u know what I mean
