REVIEWS OF Barb's Fish & Chips IN Esquimalt

Spencer Burford

Very good fish & chips at Fishmans Warf!

Graham Weatherby

The whole location is totally transformed in the last few years since we have been here last. Lots of tables to sit at. There is another seafood place that has great oysters the best we have ever had.

William K. Jennings

Best fish and chips we have had in the Island. The location is great, fun to watch the fish in the water or walk around while enjoying the meal. The fish is not dry, the batter is just right and the portions are pretty good. Great stop if you want to take a stroll around the area or head to the parks on the beach to the south.

Mathius Permana

Fantastic service and even better food, would recommend to anyone looking for a great fish and chips place!

Michael Carpenter

Barb's Fish & Chips in Victoria is never a disappointment. I am not a huge fan of fish, however here at Barb's it is always amazing and never does it have that "fishy" taste! I had the 2 piece halibut dinner and really could have got away with a one piece order instead. It was a huge meal, however none went to waste. The prices are very competitive, I think for 2 huge pieces of halibut and chips was $25. Don't miss this gem of a spot!

Greg W.

The food is great and the people are friendly. The chowder tasted great with the shrimp and the fish and chips didn't have a over oily taste to it.

Lori Bishop

I waited years for this...I'm never disappointed! Best fish & chips and you can't beat the location lol!

R Felipe

Probably one of the best fish and chips I've had in Canada. The location is beautiful and stunning and the food was hot and fresh. Portions are good for the price, the cod we ordered was in big chunky pieces with tons of meat. Fries were spot on and there is seating all around. Would definitely recommend and repeat.

Geo Vslrs

Christina W is fantastic. Enthusiastic and professional. Star employee! Should get a raise for sure. We love Barbs fish and chips the Fisherman’s wharf in Vic. Always fast and fresh. Mmm mmm. Tasty. Ps perfect order for 23 people. Still a family favourite. Annual tradition. Highly recommend. Pro tip The chowder is noteworthy Try a grilled oyster.

Gweneth

One of the best fish & chips I've ever had! Nice people and great place too!

Mike Clark

Was recommended to Barb's by a good friend who knows their fish and chips ... and it was every bit as tasty as advertised! My wife and I, with a little help from our lab (Boomer), shared a 2 piece halibut meal - lots of very tasty eats to go around! Along with the food, the experience of Fisherman's Wharf is a BIG bonus - sit water's edge, view of the city, live music playing ... you MUST visit!!

Nancy Clemens

Some of the best fish and chips I have had. Tartar sauce was great. Halibut was large and crispy.

Tegan J

Definitely worth it. The fish and chips were fresh and tasty. The staff were very friendly and very helpful. This place gets busy so be prepared to wait a bit for you food. The online ordering was closed when we attempted to order.

Jeremy Regehr

Excellent battered fish, and yummy fries. A family favorite when visiting Victoria.

Jep Cohen

Fish and chips were excellent, lots of seating available. Can be very busy so go off peak hours

Khadijah Ali

Great location to enjoy the float homes and bustle of the Victoria harbour. Enjoy fresh fish and chips on the pier. The food is quite good, very busy though. While not the best fish and chips place in Victoria, the location and ambiance just adds to the charm eating here, whether being a Victoria native or a tourist.

Chris F

A hot spot in Victoria. The fish n chips here are delicious! Light and crispy batter so it's not too heavy on the stomach. Definitely will come back here.

Aanchal Vombatkere

We ordered the seafood chowder as a quick snack. It was delicious! Came with some garlic bread too- we devoured it so fast we forgot to take a picture.

France Rocheleau

Delicious, fresh and great portion sizes - I thought I was ordering side dishes and they all turned out as meals! The muscles were the best I have ever had; tasty and very well cooked. The queue can get a little long, but you know that you are getting quality when you finally eat. The company clearly care about the food, but also their impact on the location because they have a couple of staff members walking around tidying up the local dock-side and handing out menus to people queuing so that the order process is quicker. A great place to eat!

Cédric Havermans

Amazing fish n chips! Super light, delicious and crispy battered fish. By far the best I’ve tried in Victoria so far! Cant wait to go back! Thanks Barbs for the yummy food and very friendly staff!

Brent Vermette

I shared the fish and chips with the fisherman’s sampler. The clams and mussels were cooked nicely but the shrimp skewer was dry. The chowder was great and had lots of stuff in it.

David Shih

Hungry for Fish & Chips? Come to Barb’s for the fisherman’s wharf in Victoria. Chowder is very filling and I think first time I would rather go with a cup. Breaded shrimps and calamari are awesome (make sure these are warm ????). We chose to walk from Victoria downtown here and back. Having lunch in between was amazing. Enjoy ????

Matt Lang

Wow, the flavour and crispiness of the halibut and chips was fantastic. Definitely some of the best fish and chips I've ever had. And the coleslaw was excellent, too. It's not cheap, but if you want good fish and chips I'd recommend coming here.

Jina o

Too greasy, chips need to be thicker coleslaw, with order, lemon wedges ,tarter sauce, little less batter will make it more crisper

Angel Armamento

One of my favorite places in Island located in Victoria's beautiful Fisherman's Wharf. Fish and chips is crispy and tasteful, people are nice and price is reasonable. The only thing I had here which I don't like is their onion rings but everything else is great

Justin Wiltshire

Food was nice and hot, fish was crispy & meaty, but batter could have had more seasoning.

Ec chow

Great experience in the summer. Lots to look at along the wharf next to Barb's and it is walking distance from downtown.

I love Barb’s! My fav for fish & chips in Victoria! Location is super amazing! Their salmon fish&chip never disapoints!

Bennett Holgate

HUGE pieces of fish, very good value and still good quality fish. We were expecting the typical touristy place kind of quality but were pleasantly surprised. FYI batter is dairy-free for those with allergies. All utensils and containers are compostable here. Once you are done, walk down the little pier and peer down the power posts to see schools of fish just feeding off of the algae.

The fish was good the batter was good, the battered fish I had today was just not quite cooked long enough as the batter dough was not cooked in a portion. I would eat here again I would just request the cod cooked slightly longer.

Jason V.

Great fish (heavenly halibut) not too heavy on the batter. Had mine without the chips. Check the prices. Halibut pricey but worth every penny.

Sarah Kamalzadeh

Great clam chowder soup, fish was really good too although there was too much batter on the fish. great overall!

Stefan Walter

Very good for a fish and ship and the price seems right. It is really greasy tho

a w s w c z

Very average the fish was greasy and it was just not that good if you want a good meal just take the boat taxi to red fish blue fish

Nic Cheng

Ordered 1 piece halibut dinner and it came small and round. I removed the batter and have the smallest piece of halibut. Also waited for my food when five people that ordered behind me got there food first. This place was a complete waste of my time and my money.

Edgar

We came to Barb’s Fish & Chips late last summer during our visit to Victoria and we really liked it. Their fried seafood was very tasty, fresh and light. We tried the Fish & Chips (Cod and Halibut), Breaded Shrimps and Clam Strips. The portions were reasonable and satisfying. They did not sell alcohol but, we could easily grab beers from another vendor around and enjoy our dinner on the wharf.

Sean Daniel

Crunch chips and fresh fishes. I should've ordered 2 fishes with chips. 1 fish with chips has too many potato chips. The salad was really good tho.

Yup Poong

Enjoyed the freshly done up fish and chips. Good location on the waterfront, especially during the summer months.

Chris Mazurkiewicz

Probably the best fish n chips in BC. Always insanely busy with a line to the cash AND a wait after that. Their halibut is great - not too oily with a thin layer of batter. Oyster burger was not bad - my first time so I wasn't sure what to expect.

Henry Beaty

One of the best fish and chips we had. Seasoning and cook on the cod was spot on, and the batter was fluffy. A bowl size of chowder is good for two people if it's a side dish. Covered picnic seating available with 4 tables. Ordering ahead through their website is also available to skip the lines. Our wait time was 20 min during dinner time.

Was served undercooked halibut, which I returned. New fish was cooked up for me and was even more raw, complete sashimi in the center. Make sure yours is fully-cooked if you eat here!

LaVaniel

They only could improve by their fries. They are a frozen product and for the price they are charged + more importantly the high quality of their seafood, a store bought frozen French fry is unbecoming. Had other fish in Victoria and enjoyed that little bit more because of the house made fries. Last night we ate there a second time during our short visit but had calamari and clam strips fried (for the 2nd time). Without the fries it made the food far more superb. Finally, the service both times was friendly and accommodating.

Jennifer Kennedy

A trip to Victoria will never be complete without eating here. Excellent fish and chips. Highly recommended!

Carlee Finucan

1pc vic & chips: It was fresh flakey and yes very delicious (albeit slightly greasy tbh) fish pieces, nice not greasy hand cut fries, great fresh cole slaw and house tartar sauce. Would go again. Had all the usual condiments....Just missing mushy peas. Wish they had a shrimp dinner or calamari dinner, instead just offered them as pricey sides. Oh... and FYI the kids $10 1pc cod & chips wasnt much different from the adult portion. Beautiful location alone worth the trip. Super friendly and helpful staff. We arrived at 1130 and missed the huge lunch line ups! Washrooms communal to whole wharf set up and only 3 and a bit of a walk from the eating areas, just so you are prepared for that. Overall a decent lunch out in a fun touristy setting. Outdoor public picnic tables for general seating. Wish I had taken pics of the food.

Benjamin Tay

We are traveling from Nova Scotia and have lots of good fish & chips at home, Stop by Barb's in Victoria and we was very surprised at how wonderful they make there Fish & Chips on the west coast!

Jay Chen

Top 3 best fish and chips places in town!

Devin Andres

I was so disappointed this afternoon, my calamari and onion rings were dry chewy and tasteless. The batter on the onion rings were so dry and crunchy that they could cut the inside of your mouth. The calamari was also tasteless but were like chewing on rubber bands. Not how I remember Barb's .

David-Joyce Baxter

One of the best fish and chips I've eaten. Batter is light but still crunchy and doesn't taste oily. The tartar sauce compliments the fish very well.

T W

Great Fish & Chips ! Coleslaw and Tartar sauce were good too. Just remember to pay for parking in the Fisherman's Wharf, Robbins Parking operated lot. I got a ticket in 5 minutes for not doing so. Having said that, I'll pay for parking to eat there again !

Glenn Wilson

Reasonable fish and chips. Very light, airy batter. I'd avoid the cod, which wasn't flaky and didn't stick to its batter, and go for the halibut; worth the price. Great coleslaw.

Shirin Hakim

Omg!! Service was excellent. Food was divine. Fish n chips of course + seafood chowder = don't want to stop eating. Wow! So good. We are on the little patio and got to see some of the seals come up from the water. Highly recommended. Warning: portions are huge. Don't leave Victoria without trying this place.

Tom Lawrence

Great fish and chips although way too many French fries. The order of oyster burger again very satisfactory. Would recommend Barbs

Strat Mc

Quite possibly the finest fish and chips we’ve ever eaten, when in Victoria Barbs is a must!

Vanessa Liew

Incredible!!! amazing service and best fish and chips I have ever had! I was rushing to catch my ferry home after a visit but just HAD to try and get some of these fish and chips to try before I left the island and man it was so worth it they rushed my food out so I could take it to go and the staff was so friendly! I’ll be back!! Highly recommend!!!

Farrel Vriens

Good food, basic flavors at an above average price. Awesome location!

Cory Benzo

We came here for lunch. Lovely wharf and best fish and chips we've ever had. Would recommend!

Mac Empress

Great food. Even fried not soaked in grease and uncooked like every other place. Plus you ask for extras, you actually get and delevery blows me away. Kudos

Frank R

The fish and chips were absolutely divine. One of the best fish and chips I have ever had. Definitely lives up to the hype. Be sure to go here if you’re looking for some delicious fish and chips while also enjoying the view of the pier.

Meaghan Holahan

One can't get a better location than this. Food is delish and the view of the float homes peaks your curiosity to explore. You may even have a visit from a Seal or 2...

Seph Dmn

Top drawer. Absolutely the best fish and chips I've eaten anywhere. Fresh, crispy and most flavourful

Vigan Aliu

One of the best fish and chips I ever had. I recommend this place. Prices are fair. Staff are friendly.

Sean Watt

Barbs has the best burgers and also good fish and chips. The lines can be a bit long, but it's worth a wait. Be warned the parking situation isn't great. You either pay for Robbins parking or try to find some free street parking ~500 meters away.

Jesse Rudge

Best fish and chips i have ever had! Very fast service despite the huge line up, Knowledgeable staff and very friendly, plenty of space around the doc to accommodate as many people as possible and very clean. Both salmon and Cod were great, not greasy with the right amount of fries! Definitely recommend it as one of the best places to eat fish and chips in Victoria!

Eli Bau

Longest I've ever waited for fish and chips. After 50 minutes I was Hangry. Food was cooked well but all needed seasoning. Chips were skinny skin-on fries. It was okay.

Anita Barany

It’s been a few years since I’ve been here. I remember it being way better. The chowder was fantastic (which is the only reason I scored so high). I also got the halibut, which is the most expensive fish, and it was overcooked and rubbery. The batter was good, but overall I was very disappointed with the fish.

TEMPEST

Ths fish and chips were incredible, the fish was literal perfection, the fries were good. The seafood chowder tasted awesome, but there was barely any actual seafood in the bowl sized portion but I will try it again and hope for more next time.

Jeffrey

My favourite fish & chips spot in town. Love their chowder.

Allison

Well I had the two piece halibut and I cannot complain one little but. A bit expensive, but large quantities that are fresh and very tasty. Sadly .. no Beer!!!! What gives? Fish and chips without beer is unheard of . Oh well... I will return here every time I am in the area.

The Staff and Management at Barb's Fish and Chips sure are not to Friendly. I will say that half of the staff are somewhat friendly. But if you want your Fish cooked the same way you go to a restaurant each time. Than Barb's Fish and Chips is not the place to go. Sometimes the batter on the fish is very soggy. And other times the batter is rock hard. The Management, should teach the staff to cook the fish the same way all the time. And they should cook their chips more. So they are not so soggy either. Never been to a Fish and Chip place before, with such a vary in how they cook their food each time. If you even look at the photos, of the food. They never look the same at all. Some are darkly cooked. And some are lightly cooked. It is just so hard to believe what a difference there has been from 2015 to 2016 with the friendlies of the staff, and management. At Barb's Fish and Chips. I use to like to go down there all the time. But I will never go back there again. I don't understand at all why they have changed so much, in the past year. Last year I enjoyed the staff, and they seemed to get along with me just fine. But it is a totally different story this year, unfortunately, but I don't know why. And because of that I will never go back there again. It is more to do with the staff. Then their food itself, that will keep me away. But there are many other Fish and Chip places to go to that are even friendlier and taste better. Than Barb's Fish and Chip's. The photos of the food should explain it all. Some fish is darkly cooked and some is lightly cooked. Just look at more than 3 photos of their fish, and see if they are cooked the same. One last thing to check out is this. The newer and/or most recent the reviews since June 1/16. The less there is written as a review. They only show the star rating. With nothing at all to say. How could you ever trust those ratings. Would/could you believe, those ratings are from people who really ate at Barb's Fish and Chips. Or is it just the management trying to play games, now? Just like "Dear John", How many people do you know called Dear John? With no written reviews? But the food must be good enough for the seals, as one person says.

Nathan Hale

Disappointing. Half hour wait for the clam chowder, coleslaw was sparse on dressing, fried clams were over breaded and didn’t taste fresh. Service was very good though.

Jessica Dickson

We had an overall pleasant experience, but it wasn't all good. We had to wait over half an hour for our fish, but it was good when we got it. It was priced in line with other fish restaurants in the area, and it was quite fresh! The batter was also quite light, while the cod was nicely seasoned, and the fries were nicely crisped. The food was great, price was ok, but the speed left something to be desired. I would recommend this place if you have some time, but if you're looking for speedy service, consider going elsewhere.

Chris Dykman

Great place for fish and chips. Halibut is amazing. Pro-tip is to do your order online before you get there.

Debdeb Deb Mc

The food was so delicious. Cool location on the Fisherman's Wharf. Would recommend if you are looking for some good fish and chips.

J M

5/5 experience from the fish to the fries to the seafood chowder and the garlic bread. I think i need to visit again on my next trip!

Amin Sameni

Amazinggggggg fish and chips. Super fresh. The wait time could be more than 30 mins but Im telling you it worth the wait. I dont like sea food but I like a good fish and chips and trust me when I say they have it. Love the coleslaw and their fresh crispy fires.

Zachary Duvall

Mediocre at best.....no Halibut, frozen chips, batter was soggy. Very disappointing after reading all the hype.

Addison Dale

Good food. A bit of wait but not bad

Kara Buttree

The BEST SEAFOOD on the Canadian West Coast hands-down ???? The Salmon fish & chips is a Must!

Adam Searles

Very good fish and chips! If you don’t want to wait 40 minutes at Red Fish Blue Fish but still have great food then this place is it!!! Also, their tartar sauce is super good!

Jason Hill

Barb’s fish and chips are really great! Their cod is fantastic. There is something about their cod, taste amazing. One thing about this place is fast, clean and most customers compared to other fish and chips stall.

I’m from Nova Scotia where I had the best fish and chips in Canada. I have never found a place that could compare besides this place! Always happy with service and the amazing taste of home! Highly recommended. Ps the like 3 negative reviews are from stupid people who hate their life so they beat down anything they can!

Ana Moaz

Food was good but this review is mainly towards the white skinny girl who worked on July 25th evening. Her attitude towards us was very rude and told us to hurry up and leave when we were not done eating. The guy who took the order was polite and apologized. Just remember Customers are very important during these challenging pandemic times!!!

Marc Jones

Best onion rings and coleslaw. The cod fish is SOO good but a bit greasy for me. Then the Halibut is a bit dry, but my wife loves it. Either way great place????

Nikki H

My husband and I decided to visit Victoria for the first time ever and only had 1 day to do so. We decided to grab a bite at Barb's Fish & Chips since the location was nice and their food seemed very fast and easy to prepare (we were on a schedule). Ordered 2 hamburgers and they gave us a gadget and asked us to go sit down and told us that when our food was ready the gadget would flash and vibrate. They also said it wouldn't be long! After 30 minutes we started getting impatient because like I said: we were on a schedule and had a ferry to catch at a specific time. We noticed that another couple came around 40 minutes after us and they got their order first. That's when my husband got really upset and went back to ask about our order. One of them said: "Yes, I think your gadget doesn't work" We asked for our money back obviously and we did NOT get an apology but they DID MAKE SURE to charge us the soft drinks!! I'm no Business Administration expert but if I had a business I wouldn't be giving out broken gadgets to alert my customers and just HOPE IT WORKS!! DO NOT GO HERE unless you want to experience the worst service in Victoria!!

Joseph Willson

Definitely would recommend this place . Seafood chowder sold out Halibut fish and chips were delicious

Paula J

Decent fast food fish and chips. Server was very friendly but Coleslaw was pretty bland.

Corinne Lessard

Super yummy! The secret must be in their incredible breading. The pieces of fish are big and the fries are perfect.

Ryan Brinton

My boyfriend had the famous fish and chips, while I tried the sockeye salmon. Both were great, and didn't weigh us down. The coleslaw was full of flavour and they gave us plenty of tartar sauce. Despite being quite busy, service was quick and well organized. The wharf is beautiful, but packed during peak season, so if crowds make you nervous or uncomfortable, consider that before going down. Overall, very impressed with the food!!

Cathy Dreier

Used to be that charming little fish and chips shack. Now their success has led to an almost "franchised" level of commercialization. Good for them for their success but after increasing their prices to match their "must eat here" status and quality of the food being merely ok, the value isn't there anymore for me.

GWoo

$16 for two piece cod and $25 for two piece halibut. The two portions were very small compared to every other fish restaurant I’ve been to. They said the fish was fresh HOWEVER the batter and the fish were mushy just like frozen fish. I would not go back with so many other options in the area. I gave two stars because the service was good

Trevor DeMaere

One of best fish and chips around. Decent prices. Nice place to sit with the view of fishermans wharf. Can be very busy and limited parking unless you want to pay Robbins parking prices. A must stop. Also can take harbour ferry.

Lyndall McCormack

The fish and chips are really very good, as is the seafood chowder but if you haven’t had one yet, you owe it to yourself to have the Barbs World Famous Burger! Wow!!! Can’t wait to get back and get one!

J Hawk

I really enjoyed their basic fish and chips bowl. The fries and fish were both tasty, and they had some good tartar sauce. My colleague got some oysters, but actually didn't enjoy them as much. My other colleague loved the clam chowder. The atmosphere is also very enjoyable.

Luis Leyton

They forgot to put napkins in the bag....and the fries need to be cooked longer...they were mushy, for homemade fries. Maybe leave them overnight in water in the walk in...and dry them when you take them out.

Van Leeuwen Tony

The batter was crispy not greasy and the fries were hot. The best fish and chips since I was in Scotland 2 years ago

K Forin

Best fish and chips hands down. Been there two time’s in the last few weeks. Simply amazing and the detail for the take out is the best I have ever seen. Won’t be disappointed. I got the onion rings last time with the meal and they were also so yummy????

V L

I was told by friend back home in Toronto that when in Victoria BC, Barbs Fish&Chips was not to be missed. They were right. The picture doesn't do it justice. Dont deprive your taste buds!!

November December

Amazing fish!!! So juice and the size is huge!!! The soup is also delicious! but the salad is really bad.....the veg is really hard to chew and taste bad....

Jeff Bigford

Bestest chowder! Really good fish n' chips w/ good portion size. Every time I come to Victoria, Barb's is always a must-do! Anytime someone says they are heading to Victoria, I highly recommend they do a lunch stop here

Drots Tun

Came here for the first time tonight with my wife as it was a Friday dinner hour it was quite busy we waited about 15 minutes to place our order. The food was pretty good the fish and chips were good the fish was cooked properly and not greasy the portion size was great. However they really need to do some serious revisions on their seafood chowder. The seafood chowder contained no seafood I’m pretty sure it was just a clam broth to give it to seafood flavour all it basically was was a starchy potato carrot creation for $8.50? RedFish BkueFish has way better chowder with chunks of white meat shrimp and better overall flavour. Stick with the fish and chips you’ll be OK but I would avoid the chowder. After speaking to manager they fixed it which was awesome customer service I thank you for that !

Jennifer Pepler

Best oyster burger in town...

Andy McIlrath

Had the BBQ Cheeseburger and Helibut dinner. They were both very nice! Would be 5 stars if the prices were reasonable.

Adam

It was okay, seafood soup tasted a bit old, staff are bored cause it is not prime season currently and they are not busy…over all it was fine, it's just not "worlds famous"…

Natasha Lippert

Very good fish and chips. The spicy salmon burger wasn't really spicy but still tasted pretty good. Eating on the dock is a bit of fun as well.

Soozay V

The perfect place to enjoy fish and chips right on fisherman’s warf.

Reg Lewis

So many fries/chips! We ordered the two-piece cod and two-piece salmon, both of which were delicious. Orders were completed rather quickly, even though it was at a prime eating time. Great view while eating and there were two people performing great song covers on the dock. I'll definitely recommend to friends.

Faye D

My boyfriend wanted to visit Victoria over the weekend and it was my first time too! We wandered to the wharf hungry as heck so we dropped by to pick up some fish and chips and chicken strips. Buuuut we were even given HALF of our order and sadly we only realised when we were a bit too far and we were so tired with all the walking and travelling to go back. It was pretty lacklustre. I ordered the chicken strips and fish and chips meals. But they forgot my side of fries and coleslaw. The strips were OK but the fish and chips were not worth the money at all. Chips were definitely frozen fries and the fish was far from fresh. $30 dollars for a bad laxative, is what that was. Beware if you have a sensitive tummy or IBS.

Nancy Au

Great spot for fish and chips. There are other items in the menu. But the fish and chips are what made them famous. Haven't had a bad batch there yet. Durring the summer can be quite busy. Watch out for the gulls who will dive bomb your tray to knock the chips away and scarf them down. Please don't feed the gulls.

Justin W

We tried fish and chips and onion rings. Delicious food with salad. ????????????

Spring Ross

I feel as though that they should be better prepared for the dinner rush. They were out of coleslaw, chowder, oysters, and mussels. Shrimp was a 40 minute wait so anything other than fish and chips was pretty much out of stock or a really long wait because they said fish and chips is all we can make right now. They did give drinks in lieu of the coleslaw but I feel they really missed the mark on the whole restaurant experience from someone visiting from out of town. The fish and chips itself were decent but the wait was much longer than the 15-20 minutes they quoted. It was around 40 minutes. Update: Instead of the owner taking ownership of some of the miscues and taking a responsible approach to an explanation, I received a condescending response and being called an entitled customer. While I can appreciate supply shortages due to unforeseen circumstances (something that was not explained to the customers) and staff shortages, a brief explanation would go much farther from a customer service standpoint (maybe even a review retraction) than a snarky response. Constructive criticism is not well recieved and from my standpoint I feel as though my business was not appreciated. So with that being said, instead of giving them another chance due maybe it being an "off" day we will not return because of the attitude shown by the owner. I've also downgraded my rating to a 1 because the quality of food can not make up for the attitude of the owner!

Maldelic Drakivaz

Halibut was great, though the chips were soggy and the coffee cold. Wasn't impressed with server who doled out the condiments and plastic cutlery as if they were coming off his pay check! No napkins were offered or given.

Isabella Hernandez

This place came highly recommended, although I was disappointed. I found the fish and chips to be very greasy, I’ve definitely had better at other restaurants in Victoria.

Antek Pienkos

Had a bad experience at Barbs fish and chips that I want to review/share, and if it invokes a rude response from the management/owner then they just look worse. Firstly, check your food before trekking a few blocks back to your car. If I checked I wouldn't have had to trek back, an exhausting walk. I had to tell them they messed up my order, I got less than what I paid for. By then the food was cold and I just wanted my money back, no replacements would suffice as I was already so exhausted and rightfully so by this time. The staff admitted to messing up the order, but were extremely sketchy, and wouldn't refund it at first or all. I finally did get a full refund but waiting for him to figure it out. I was shocked why not give it all back if they messed up, and made a customer argue for all their money back. A customer has the right to get all money paid if any sale is done wrongly, and if it is untouched. As I stood waiting as they flipped over receipts not one person that was standing there said sorry for the trouble, not one apologetic response given. More just a menacing glare at me, an exhausted looking person wanting a refund, no care from them at all. I wish I seen the awful replies they give customers in reviews before I went, as if I did read them, I would of avoided going in the first place.

takdeer dhaliwal

SSSSsuper salty soup? (Terrible Sticky soup)????. Not taste deep fried fish ????. The garlic bread is like a paper ????, I think it’s doesn’t need skill to make it but it’s very dry n taste wire. We were waiting almost 10mins there, I m expecting its fast food but it took long for us to wait. I am sure not going back again. U know I am very hungry but still doesn’t taste good, u can tell how bad????.

Barbara Bernard

Pretty modern with an app to order online and everything. Also the food was super good. Huge portions but not on the cheapest side of things. But at least you wont be hungry after wards. Clean, organized and tasty. Take a water taxi after and just enjoy the sights.

Michael Iannantuoni

Food is always excellent. It is harder to find a table to eat because of the covid 19 situation but they have picnic tables in the park next to the Fisherman's wharf so it is not a problem.

food was quick and hot! portions were nice - the pieces of fish were HUGE, and it was nice that you could order a salad instead of chips for free. they have takeout boxes if you ask. would definitely come again.

Cheri Pappas

The line up moves quickly, the service is awesome, the portions are big and worth the price. Everything was fresh and light, not too greasy. I had the halibut burger..,yum!! I added a bit more tartar sauce to add some flavour. My friend had the two piece cod fish and chips and loved it. We loved sitting on the dock surrounded by boats. We even saw a cute seal swimming around the wharf. Highly recommend this place for lunch!

best fish and chip i have ever tried. Not kidding. thick fish almost like double the thickness of regular fish, and the oyster side is an instant kill. highly recommend this restaurant. it makes my day

Nice place to sit down and enjoy the wharf. Food is great, we had the 2 piece meal. Fish was fresh, batter was light and crispy. The automatic queue system is good idea too, you don’t have to wait in line for your turn.

Classic fish and chips. Really satisfying experience if you come to visit the town. Colorful houses and positive energy is all around the environment, and you can just sit there and watch the water taxi to ship out slowly from the port. What harms anyway to slow your life down a bit and chill with sea wind? As for the flavor, careful kitchen staffs put it aside for a little bit to make sure the surface of fish won’t be burning hot to be hold, but still the inner texture remains tender, juicy, slim and a little bit HOT. Sauce could be better but there are salt and catchup too as spares. The amount is huge, normal Asians especially girls may not able to finish everything including chips if you order 2 pieces, but fish worth it.

Best fish 'n' chips I've ever had! Got the cod...it was just as good as I remembered it from 15 years ago!

Tony Yang

Chips, chowder and bread were good, the fish was mostly batter when we tucked in on all three pieces. Wait was 25 minutes after paying suggesting that the the cooking and preparation side struggles to cope with demand. I've eaten a lot of f&c over the years and I'm struggling to think of any delay of that magnitude and I grew up on an English council estate that fed the masses. Best experience in Victoria so far has been Red Fish Blue Fish at inner harbour. A long queue to pay, food ready in 5 minutes though, great portion sizes and fish/batter ratio was spot on. Summary: it's all ok at Barb's, not quite to the hype that I was given though.

VIRG DISIPIO

Barb's is know for the great fish and chips but try the burger. Delicious! I still crave that burger two years after our visit.

I mostly came for the clam chowder, but didn't get to try it. They were out, but there was no sign saying that, so I didn't find out prior to placing the rest of my family's order. Still, Also went ahead rather than cancelling and walking away. For the rest of the order, we were underwhelmed, but mostly due to personal preference. The portion of meat you get with an order compared to the chips is much smaller than we are used to. Nevertheless, when your most popular menu item is out, and you know many customers come to the restaurant just for that, you should tell customers up front or hang a sign when it runs out.

Came here with decent expectations. I ordered first and received my order significant later than my compatriots. The fries were bland, the shrimp was soso and the coleslaw was plain. While my colleagues felt it was alright I don't think it lives up to the hype. Felt like an overpriced joint that survives solely off its location

Jake Charles

So disappointed. The clam strips were way over cooked! The delivery was ridiculous. My husband had to chase the driver down. We'll go to a restaurant next time where we can get the mistakes fixed!

Adrian Sin

Fish & Chips was great. Fresh and crispy. Love the flavour and the view.

Gavin Doyle

This place has such an amazing fish and chips. Literally, I think this is the best fish and chips in this city. I’m so addicted to their foods!

tina spadafora

ordered pickup on doordash! i forgot to take a picture because we were so excited to eat!! i had the salmon, and the bf got halibut. everything was cooked to perfection, absolutely no complaints!! the lady who helped us was also very nice. barbs is in such a nice environment as well, right on the dock in fishermans wharf. absolutely stunning, 10/10 from us.

Mark Siwek

Fish was good, but too much breading for my taste. However, I really enjoyed the lightly breaded and fried shrimp basket. Fries were perfect. Great service and the setting is so nice.

robin moss

We had the halibut fish and chips. We ordered the 2 pieces to split between us as it was less expensive than ordering 2 X 1 pcs and they were so sweet to decide the food for us. That was very appreciated.

Dan Klein

Ordered fish and chips and the counter and cooks were sooo nice during the night shift. Coming from surly Vancouver, these guys were sunshine and I liked it a lot. The order was cooked quickly, portions were big, and fries perfect. Best customer service and tasty fish and chips. Would go again, and in fact I did the next day. Not the same staff haha but the halibut burger was mint.

Melissa Velasquez

They didn’t have any oysters but then again none of the businesses on the wharf had them at the time. Overall the fish was buttery and tasty, the fries were good and the service was quick. Only thing is that the coleslaw could have used a bit more seasoning.

Kenneth Mcgechen

Very good food. Average price. The chowder is very good.

Irene

a great place for fish and chips down on Fisherman's Wharf. Covered patio seating, fast service, very popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

Tahni Fortin

Love the halibut fish here, and their homemade coleslaw & tarter sauce is excellent. The fries never taste like fish! Yay! (I hate it when that happens) Sometimes the wait can be a bit long, but what do u expect when ppl know it's good, they are going to come! Lol And u just can't beat the scenery down there @ Fisherman's Wharf! :)

byron morrison

It's good but I like my batter a little less thick. Lots of options on the menu though. Decent service. Value was a little light - saving for 2 piece halibut was pretty small. I'll probably try something else next time.

Sharlene W

Great plate of fish & chips the way it should be, it's so tough finding an authentic plate like this and by the Sea side tops it off. Just a bit pricey...

michael banks

Our favorite place for fish and chips in Victoria. Always get the halibut with a side of oysters. Old style fries are also excellent. It was easy, during the week, to get a table for al fresco lunch. If you bring folding chairs, you could eat in the small park above the boardwalk. We go at least twice a year.

Jesse Koteles

As far as I am concerned the big two Fish & chips shops on Victoria and Red Fish Blue Fish and Barb's, and I couldn't have a trip to Victoria without either. Barbs has a great location right on the waterfront in a fun little shopping district on the water. There is often live music and always great views. The fish itself is, for lack of a better word, buttery. Always fresh and made to order it comes out hot, even if that means you might have to wait a bit on a busy day. I highly recommend this place to anyone on the hunt for great fish and chips in victoria. Barb's is the complete package.

Minh C

Great fish and chips!!!! My family loved the experience.

Katy W

The fish was excellent, but the fries were not from freshly cut potatoes, they came from a factory

Jean-Yves Forcier

Barb's is an iconic Victoria Fish & Chips restaurant. We had both cod and halibut meals, and both were great! Fish was a little greasy, but, hey!, it's fish & chips! Also, it was takeout, so that's likely also a factor. Chips were excellent, and the coleslaw is one of the best I've had locally. Beautiful location on Fisherman's Wharf, downtown Victoria. Recommended.

cole campbell

Best fresh fish ever tasted, batter puffed and crisp yet inside was so tender. Seafood chowder was divine. Excellent prices for good size portion of food. Two piece fish combo came with fries and coleslaw. Chowder in a huge cup with toast, fed 2 people.

Tom Hay

good! its too big and fresh and nice service!!!
