First things first, their waiter, Craig was really great! He really was great and made great suggestions and was really fun to have conversations with. He did not make it awkward, but made it fun and comfortable. I was there for my fiancé's birthday and the food is amazing. Except for the warm crab in a jar where the butter felt too much and we were just tasting the butter a little too much. We barely got the taste of the lemon. Other than that, my fiancé loved the oysters. Thank you Modern Ocean for making it a great night for my fiancé's birthday. The complementary dessert was on point and it just melted right on your mouth. The dish we had were great. Would definitely go there for seafood again, but hopefully I got for the Grand with the various seafood.

Went here for lunch with work, was overall quite good. The layout and decor was pleasant, while the staff was helpful and offered quick service. Had the sea bass which was definitely worth while. The potato skin starter was a miss, very expensive for only two potato skins that were very mediocre at best. The fifth star is lost due to a very expensive menu and some items being mediocre.

Calamari, octopus, scallops and sable fish were incredible. Fresh, perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. Our waiter, Ryan, was knowledgeable, professional and helpful. Others might want to be aware that the restaurant is NOT accessible for those with mobility concerns.

I have to say, what an incredible experience. Our server Nick was the best, incredibly helpful and friendly, the Crab in a Jar and Caviar were fantastic, and the main course with the Prawns, Filet Mignon, crab and giant sea Scallops were the star of the show. (I shared, don't worry!) Some people unfortunately don't understand that Scallops aren't "raw" when they are pink in the center. Proper sea Scallops should be rare in the middle and never cooked fully through, and I must say mine were perfect. Huge kudos to the chef, and thank you for the incredible meal and experience. I highly recommend giving this place a try if you want perfectly cooked Scallops and all around great service!

No. Not again. Charged for Lobster Fettuccine that I only had 2 bites of, and we explained why to the server before the bill arrived, didn’t notice the price until we got home and observed the bill closely. Lobster Fettuccine had minimal taste; required more acid, lobster tail was a measly quarter order, not a half tail as advertised, the entire dish was a lunch size for an abysmal price. The only acceptable items we ordered were the oysters, which one can’t really get wrong unless there are shells in the shucking, as well as the curry mussels, they got that right. This restaurant is fine, not memorable. The only memorable mention is the ridiculous price point for the mediocre plates that need much more refinement before they can qualify as fine dining.

Stick to steak! , civecha was Shrimp cocktail, not lime cured, aall tomato, jar of crab was half sized and all butter, char fish had a sliver of meat and a sliver of skin on Campbell's tomato soup, and who makes an Ol fashion with wild turkey?

What a fantastic Oyster Bar! Much needed restaurant for the South of Calgary. Top notch Service, Oysters were tasty, the Sea Beam Fish dish and Halibut were fab! Dessert - Mousse and Burlee, delicious! I hope Modern Ocean does not change. Keep up with the great food and Service.

Had a very pleasant visit to the newly opened Modern Ocean. Server was very friendly and attentive, multiple staff actually came by to check in on us. Good happy hour and daily specials. Love how they emphasize local seafood and appreciated the explanation of where they source their product. Our mains were great although I did expect more uni in the scallop risotto. Pricey but solid portions, similar to Modern Steak. Will be back to sample more items!

It was my birthday and we went for the Thursday special menu only to find out that they have the wrong menu on the website. The server was passive aggressive, he was not helpful, smelled of old cigarettes and alcohol... you know that sickly sweet alcoholic smell. It was surprising considering this is a classy place. We asked for a different server and Kate saved the experience. The kitchen worked with because some of the items on the old menu weren't available but in the end, we had a great meal and left happy.

Overall experience was disappointing. Managers were amazing, the hostess and our waitress were not. Our entrees were forgotten about (which I believe resulted in the raw scallops mentioned below) and our entire experience took about 2 hours. The crab in a jar was delicious. The salmon carpaccio was a little too fishy. The scallop risotto was very salty and under cooked (especially the raw scallops). The lobster fettuccine was good. The cheesecake was great too. The restaurant decor is beautiful and clean. Probably wouldn't come back, but we still love Modern Steak!

My wife and I went to Modern Ocean for our anniversary, and I'm a little saddened by the overall quality of the entrees. The location is at a premium spot, with a very upscale feeling dining area (and of course very clean; because it just opened up). The server seemed to be very upbeat and positive, but considering the few tables occupied in the dining room, we ran dry for 10 minutes before she came to address it. We opened with both the beef and tuna tartare; which was the saving grace of the meal, and started on a high, but our hopes depleted when our entrees arrived. My wife had the scallop risotto, one of the scallops had a very strong fishy taste and the risotto was very bland and watery. We recently had an exceptional lobster risotto in Halifax NS; and even though we are sympathetic to the land locked nature of Calgary, there is absolutely no way I'd be ok. paying 20% more for the one from Modern Ocean (again). I had the Ahi tuna. I will say that my family is spoiled with annual trips to that Pacific ocean, and I eat A LOT of Ahi. When fish is fresh and quality, you don't have to do much to it, but seasoning is important. None of these elements were present. There was a pool of cloudy semi-translucent liquid (which I initially thought was a sauce) soaking the fish (which was just slightly above room temp). This was not a sauce. I believe it was from thawing fish. It was garnished with some cold picked vegetables and a chimichurri. The chimicurri was way way over on the garlic, and that's all I could taste. The entire dish was very off-putting. I should have sent it back, but I didn't. My argument to all those who would advise 'let them fix' this is that; it shouldn't have to be 'fixed' - for a meal that cost 160 dollars. Our expectations were high (not sure why...perhaps the reviews, perhaps the association to Modern Steak), and even if I did my best to put my 'objective' hat on and judge the meal on it's own, it's still a 2 star experience. Perhaps most upsetting (back on the personal front) is that it was our Anniversary dinner. ***Edit*** I received a phone call the night after from the GM Nick who clearly cared about customer service and quality of the product they are representing. He was appologetic about the entire experience and offered a refund. This goes miles with us as customers and although it comes along with the territory (in food service); I feel like he went the extra mile. This was excellent followup by Nick.

The restaurant is located in downtown Calgary and has beautiful interior. The service was good, just it took longer time for the food to come out when it was not that busy with not many customers that day. For the food, I tried the YYC Food and drinks Exp lunch menu. The white seafood chowder taste ok, not my best experience with chowder. Rainbow trout main dish were delicious, the fish skin is nice and crispy. They're seasoning well, not too salty. It garnished with crispy couliflower and smoked potato salad and bacon. The warm brownies is awesome, perfect combination with vanilla ice cream.

Went to Modern Ocean Dec 1, 2021. Was told the date night special was not available on the modern ocean and only available for modern steak (even though the website promoted a date night deal for 2). We decided to stay, however it was undoubtedly dissapointing. It took over 30 minutes to finally get our orders. Another 30 minutes for our appetizers. Then a substantial hour wait for our entrees. Between this time, our waiter stopped by less than a handful of time. And at one point had came by to let us know our dish is coming "in a few seconds"... Those few seconds ended up being 15-20minutes. In case people believe the time is exaggerated. Our party arrived in full by 7:00pm, ordered by 7:30pm, and our entree did not arrive until 8:45-9pm. It took an astonishing 15 minutes after we were all done eating to be asked if we wanted dessert, at this time it was close to 9:45pm and we decided to call it a night and forgo the dessert option. The night was not busy at all. Our seating arrangement upstairs had 4 tables max (our table, 2 table of 3, and a table of 2). Not impressed, and I won't be coming back anytime soon.

Went here for a good sea food experience. We ordered about 170-180 dollars worth of food, mostly from the Appy section. We had the Wagyu dumplings, tuna tartare, grilled octopus, warm crab in a jar, chocolate cake, wine and a specials drink, and about 10-12 oysters on special. So overall, food came out quickly, drinks tasted great, and our server Fiona was great. The reason for 3 stars is that each dish wasnt the greatest but it wasn't the worst either. To explain, the warm crab in a jar was delicious however for me personally the flavour was masked by the immense amount of butter. The tuna tartare was lacking flavour as well, I would say the tuna tartare from the KEG would be a better option. The grilled octopus had a little too much oil in it for my liking, again masking the flavor. The chocolate cake felt like it was just reheated, and not baked fresh, and I could totally be wrong! But that's how it tasted. The oyesters were great however and they were on special as well. Each was very flavorful and tasted fresh! I wish I could give the place more than 3 stars but I have to give each of those stars to the servers, front desk staff, and our bartender who came and checked in on us nicely.

Took my wife and aunt (who share the same birthday) to celebrate their birthdays on Saturday night the 18th of January, 2020 for 5:00 PM. One of my best friends and his wife also joined us for a party of five. I chose Modern Ocean because my wife and aunt love seafood and I heard rave reviews about seafood freshness and I’d been to modern steak. If the quality was similar (from a sister restaurant), we were in for a treat. Gotta start with the positives: Customer service. From host/ess to server, to runners, to manager on duty, customer service was above and beyond. Greeted with a welcoming smile, coat check crew were great also. In fact, every interaction with an employee was top notch. When we did have issues (keep reading) everyone was quick to try and resolve issues and overall were very, very good. The complimentary popcorn was delicious. We definitely enjoyed this. Appies we started with were warm crab bowl, shrimp wontons, and ahi tuna tartare. Appies were a great start. All delicious. All exactly what we wanted to kick off our meal. Crab bowl was buttery deliciousness, crostini’s were perfectly toasted. Ahi tuna tartare was also delicious. Exactly how a tartare should be. Shrimp wontons were a bit salty (for some), but I personally really enjoyed them. Beverages were also very good. The men ordered a surf and turf - one NY strip loin with 3 jumbo prawns, and the other the ribeye with 3 scallops. The steaks - as expected - were both cooked to perfection. The jumbo prawns were juicy and tasty. The scallops (in the other dishes also) were cooked to perfection. Everyone who’d ordered scallops raved about it. My aunt ordered the 1lb of king crab. She was happy with what she got, but felt the meat had no real flavour. We realize the butter was a clarified butter and not garlic butter, but there was no oohs and ahhs with the crab. It was just ok. My wife ordered a half pound to go with her meal also and said the same. We’d made better and tastier crab at home. Here’s where things are not so great. My wife and my friends wife both ordered the scallops risotto. As mentioned before - the scallops were cooked to perfection. The risotto on the other hand was totally inedible. My wife hates to complain, and will even eat food she’s served and not say a word. But she couldn’t eat it. Risotto was mushy in parts and almost uncooked in others. They both also noticed that it tasters like someone poured vinegar in it. It just wasn’t good. They tried eating the scallops with it, which eased the acidity, but they felt like they were wasting the excellence of the scallops by mixing it with the risotto. We also realize that risotto is not an easy dish to make. But if you’re offering it, it should be good every time. We told the server this, and she took them back (and off the bill - thank you!) and the manager also came to apologize. Because the rest of us had food, the two ladies decided to order replacement meals that might be quicker to appear so the rest of us wouldn’t be stuck watching them eat (but what a view though ????). They settled on seared ahi tuna and a rice bowl also with ahi tuna. Both items came out very quickly and they split the meals and dug in. The seared ahi tuna was fantastic. Hell of a rebound from the risotto. Kudos to the chef on this. The rice “poke” bowl however wasn’t great. The tuna did not taste fresh and in fact was very fishy. My friend’s wife couldn’t eat it and my wife also couldn’t stomach it, and definitely couldn’t eat the leftovers the next day (my 12 year old son who is basically a garburator also couldn’t eat it). At this point in the dinner we didn’t want to complain some more and were just disappointed. It’s hard to say we won’t recommend Modern Ocean after this, but for what we ended up paying (a little over $300 which is honestly what I’d predicted we’d be spending) we expected to be blown away and to really enjoy celebrating the 2 birthdays that night - which we were unable to do because it was the birthday girls meals that were the ones that weren’t great.

Never again! First off, the new cocktails were horrible. I have ordered a Whiskey Sour and tasted nothing like one. Second off, it’s took them 50 minutes to bring our food. First time we politely asked if food is coming, looked like the waitress forgot about our order. Second time, she had to go to the kitchen again and check with them. Risotto tasted terrible. I felt like I’m eating a sour pudding. This restaurant doesn’t worth the money you spend there.

A night out without the lilman was truly amazing. We had never been to Modern Ocean before. But we kept hearing so many good things, we just had to take the opportunity to try it out. Fiona was an amazing server. She was knowledgeable and friendly. We basically just ordered her suggestions. They were SPECTACULAR! We started with the octopus appetizer. I had not tried this particular ocean roaming animal before. Wow! It was delicious. Then we dove right in to our entrees which included the scallop risotto and the swordfish. The beverages were top shelf all the way. The beer was local and the rum I chose was Flor de Cana 18 Centenario Gold. We couldn’t finish so we decided to take the rest home and enjoy Ocean for one more day. Truly the best, most fresh seafood we’ve ever had in Calgary. Everything was first class. If you like seafood, Go there! My one suggestion would be to try and source some local spirits: rum, gin, vodka in particular. There are so many awesome local distilleries!

This place deserves the 4 star rating for the incredible server that served us, the happy hour and the steak. We had added a lobster tail and king crab on the side and these were not great. I almost wish we didn't order these so that our night would remain untainted. The king crab was so dry that even dousing it in butter didn't help. The lobster tail was also extremely salty. To be fair, I know that Calgary is landlocked and most of our shellfish are frozen but still, we get seafood from the farmer's markets and they're much better. I'd expect the same quality from a restaurant that prides itself on having the best ingredients especially at their prices. Nevertheless, the oysters were great, the scallop risotto we got and the happy hour are both definitely worth it. The ribeye we got was also perfectly cooked and delicious.

OH MY GOD! I have been at several places in Calgary good reviewed places expensive places and THIS IS A MUST TRY place. Service is absolute perfect they come enough to your table to ask you about anything ohh I hate when they bug you before even the first bite. The food is incredibly good the sauce the fish the side dishes incredible the oysters are excellent the antré crab in the jar the little lemon and garlic taste made it aromatic the butter made it soft the octopus don’t give that much meat with the side it wasn’t well balanced the portion but the flavour was very tasty thick beautiful. Main course sword fish the fish the sauce and the mashed potato individual was like they are missing something but all together was incredible . The salmon I would serve it as a thicker stake because how it is now it’s a cooked fish cutlet, they have made a few mistakes like with the popcorn don’t serve it what is that ?? Try the Alaska dessert. Anyways A-MAZ-ING we will definitely come back thank you for this experience.

Modern Ocean / Modern Steak menus were overly complex. Food was fantastic, however the service. Our waiter seemed like he has never served before. Never checked on drinks, zero rapport or knowledge of the menu. When it was time for the bill he approached us with “you can stay, but I want to get home because of the snow storm.” Apparently we were an inconvenience with his commute back to Auburn Bay. We spent the entire meal wondering puzzled how this location missed the mark.

My friends and I celebrated a bday at Modern Ocean last night and we were extremely disappointed in the overall experience. Unequivocally, it was one of the worst dining services we have attended. It was 45 mins before we received our appetizers, over an hour and a 1/2 before we received our entrees as we were told it "would be a minute" unapologetically. Food was decent but not for the exorbitant prices we paid plus we were charged 20% gratuity for 6 people. This was mentioned by our waiter who said he would unprofessional if he didn't mention it though it is a requirement. The general consensus was everyone left with indignation and we would not be going to back to Modern anytime. EDIT: Modern Ocean reached out to me to rectify what transpired which is very congenial of them. They will focus on coaching their staff and hopefully there won't be any more odious experiences :)

Great overall. Highlight was the great, very laidback service from our server Craig! Good wine recommendations too. We enjoyed mostly everything, although we were underwhelmed by the swordfish, it was our first time trying it so we weren't sure what to expect, but it was quite dry.

Unfortunately for a seafood Resturaunt I must say it wasn’t very good. My seafood platter was awful, I literally watched the the two gentlemen prepping my platter and witnessed both of them smelling my lobster tails to see if they were good to eat. Upon receiving them I noticed they were dried right out and smelled awful, clearly the chef noticed the same by witnessing his smell test and why he ever thought it was a good idea to plate it and send it to me is bizarre. At a hefty price if $174 I would expect it to be fresh and top notch, the grab legs were over cooked and dried right out as well, the oysters were very good as were the prawns. We had the rib eye steak which wasn’t cooked to order but had very good flavour. Listen I’m not one to to complain or one to shy away from spending good money on fine dining but this was way over priced for the quality we received, don’t think I will be visiting this place again any time soon ????????‍♂️

I went here with my family for our 44th anniversary. The service here was very very disappointing. We had to wait 1 and 1/2 hours to get our food and only after we reached out to the waitress to inquire several times. The food was subpar and definitely not worth the price that we paid. They were supposed to give a small dessert for the anniversary but was so late (30min) that we left out of frustration. We have been to many nice restaurants in the last couple of months and this is by far a very bad experience. On top of that they served popcorn as a appetizer..????

Great food and even better service! CRAIG from Modern Ocean was so attentive and brought us everything we needed before we even thought we needed it. He really took extra care and was extra professional, a top server in Calgary. You can't easily teach how to read a table, and you might not even know he's there taking care of you (that's how good he is). Super welcoming ladies at the front. (would recommend a reservation as it gets bumpin' quick). I'll be back and hope to see Craig or any of his team again. What a cool vibe and great people who really care about delivering stellar service!

Came for dinner this evening and had an awesome experience! I started with the beef tartare, which was great, nice flavor. I then had the ahi tuna for my main, the flavors were incredible! The best I have ever had. The blend of flavour was exquisite. Finished with a rosette serbotto with a nice subtle taste, great way to finish off the experience. Definitely on my list of places to come again.

The Kensington location is legendary! recently my wife Lynn and Nancy enjoyed oysters at your restaurant and they loved every aspect of it from the food to the amazing staff, AJ in particular was a rock star! Will definitely be going back and recommending others to visit.

Went here for my birthday dinner + Shucktoberfest and was highly impressed with the food here. We had crab in a jar (a must have), oysters, and also split a large seafood platter among three people. Portions are great, I don't think I expected that much food but we all left full and happy. The platter came with king crab, lobster tail, prawns, oysters, and marinated octopus. All were delicious and fresh but those Raspberry Point oysters are to die for. I think I ate about 10 of them and I could still go for more. The setting was cozy and food was amazing. Definitely going to come back soon!

My wife and I were big fans of Catch and were sad to see it go. We ate at Modern Ocean for the first time recently and loved it. It was great to know that Modern Ocean fills the void left by Catch in a city with limited options for elevated seafood. I had the Turbot and my wife had the Trout, we started the meal with some oysters from PEI. At the end of the meal we both felt that Modern Ocean not only matched Catch but may have exceeded it.

So have to say went in expecting a lot.server was nice and well informed, place was empty at 7pm on thurs.i had ahi and omlette w green goddess. Was plated and tasted like better bar food not fine dining. Two at the table had the Sea Bass..nice piece of fish covered in panko ,crispy,cook was good,not seasoned at all ,either order, neither one got finished and with me at the table that doesnt happen.i am being generous at 3 stars,but this place needs some management and qc .wont be going back

Had a great experience here! Kadie our server was fantastic, always at the table to refill waters and bringing other beverages while melting on the patio, very friendly. 11/10 for service. Seafood was fresh, prepared very well and delicious. Natasha the manager stopped by towards the end of our meal to make sure everything went well, very friendly and upbeat. Planning to come back for the Sunday special next week! Saw them on the YYCNOW account and happy we did ????

Great food! Me and my fiancé came in for the oyster night and also had the crab in a can which was amazing. My only gripe with our experience was the service. Our server wasn’t very friendly and didn’t seem like he wanted to serve us. Don’t know if he was having a bad or something but he didn’t talk much, maybe it might have been our location in the restaurant but overhearing the servers complain behind the bar wasn’t very pleasant.

Went here to celebrate a birthday, I’ve been to Modern Steak multiple times but stopped going two years ago since the quality went down. I thought maybe Modern Ocean would be different, however, it was underwhelming. We ordered the grilled octopus and steak tartare to start. I was happy that they were able to accommodate us by offering Modern Steak’s tartare when I asked for it as it’s not on Modern Ocean’s menu. The appetizers were great, and the price decent. The entrees were disappointing though. I ordered the albacore tuna which was extremely dry, overcooked and bland. It came with some corn kernels which did not taste fresh at all. This meal was $31.50, definitely not worth it for what tasted like microwaved food. Another ordered the turbot, though flavourful the size was extremely small for an entree. This is similar to the scallop risotto. The base was delicious, but it only came with 3 scallops, which were medium sized. Two people ordered the ribeye, it was ok. But unfortunately, it came with a scoop of mashed potatoes and “seasonal vegetables” which was three pieces of half carrots. I don’t understand why they don’t offer the same full-sized sides as they do in Modern Steak. On to desserts, the warm chocolate cake was a little sad looking compared to other chocolate cakes offered in other restaurants. The baked Alaska was good, and the pecan was mediocre. Overall, 4 out of the 5 of us left still hungry or disappointed with the food. If you want seafood, you’re better off at Rodney’s which is half the price, better service and amazing food. We originally wanted to dine there, but it was a Sunday and they were closed. Definitely not coming back to Modern Ocean. The “Modern” restaurants quality has gone down for the past few years.

First time experience. Went here for my Birthday with 7 of my girls; prebooked reservation. The place is very beautiful. Staff are very friendly and made my night feel special. I do not remember our servers' name but her and a hostess were lovely. Food was delicious as I ordered king crab with sides and had the seafood platter for 2 to share for our table. Would love to come back with my boyfriend for a romantic evening and I would recommend others also!

Truly the BEST and FRESHEST seafood in the City! Professional service with a comfortable atmosphere, we finished off the seafood tower and still ordered seconds is the King Crab legs! (Wear loose clothing...)

We had a group dinner for work last Wednesday (Nov. 10th). Two of us arrived early to grab some drinks before everyone else got there. The drinks were terrible, they tasted like water. When the rest of the party arrived, we were seated but our server didn’t come to see us for at least 15 minutes. He was quite rude. We waited for our food for more than 30 minutes (they had a large function, so that’s understandable). Most of us had steaks (NY strip loin) and got VERY SICK from them the night after and the following day. Their starters were really good, and they accommodated our request to switch menus (we accidentally booked for modern ocean instead of modern steak). Overall though, it was not a good experience at all. Would not come back.

Came here for the first time this past weekend and my experience was great! Our server was very friendly and we never saw her without a smile. She had great suggestions for what the most popular items on the menu were and explained why. I had the seafood chowder which was great! And for my main I had the lobster fettuccine which was super filling and delicious! As someone who loves seafood I was very impressed. I would definitely come here again!

I wanted to take my wife somewhere special to celebrate our 9th anniversary and Modern Ocean did not disappoint! The food was exquisite, the prices were beyond reasonable, the staff was courteous and friendly. We went on a Monday evening and enjoyed the seafood boil with oysters on the side and it was simply amazing. The beef tartar is easily one of the best in the city! Thank you Modern Ocean, we will definitely be seeing you again!!!
