Been going to this place for a long long time (more than 20 years!), the quality has always stayed pretty consistent although I notice sometimes (mainly in the last couple of years) that the chips sometimes arrive at around room-temperature. I'm marking this at 3 stars out of five, based primarily on the price of the product; it's now getting to the point where it's pretty much out of my price-range, or at least what I deem to be reasonable for what you get. It's nice for a treat every now and then, but really do which it was priced a bit more reasonably. Just my opinion.

Just went there for lunch. Best halibut fish and chips I've had in years! Sometimes you get good fish and bad fries or good fries and bad fish. They were both delicious. The service was fabulous and it was fast. This is important when you are on your lunch hour. A little pricey but it was well worth it. I will be going back again and bringing my family. I would highly recommend this place if you love halibut and fries.

This place is a gem. The fish and chips are so good and the folks are friendly. We usually get haddock and halibut with a side of mushy peas. Fish is always fresh with no fishy or stale/burnt oil smell and taste.

I have been going to the thistle for many years and I have always loved their fish and chips. That changed tonight! The fish looked and tasted like it had been retried, the chips were hard in the centre like they had been reheated. The portion was only a small half piece of fish. Prices have gone way up for quarter the potion of what they use to have.

Their chowder and steak and mushroom pie are also yummy. Staff is super friendly and service is quick. Tip: Check the times as they close earlier than most restaurants open for dinner. It was good, but not great! the fries were amazing. The fish tasted ok but was a little soggy from the grease, needed to be a little crispier. The starter sauce came in little packets as if we were at a fast food restaurant. For an actual restaurant they should consider making their own tarter sauce.

I have been going to Thistle for 22 years Its a Family Tradition to go to the thistle and have the Halibut and chips But recently i went had the WORST SERVICE we ordered two drinks that literally tasted like it was a cup full of cleaner (had an alcoholic/cleaner taste) and when we asked for new drinks we got attitude and terrible service from the manager the only time anyone was actually nice to us was when it came time to tip safe to say no tip for them ...we also overherd the people beside us saying they werent tipping bcus service was so terrible! Never Again!

I have only had the opportunity to be out this way once around 4 months ago. I recently moved to Canada from Scotland and was told by multiple people to come and try the food so I did. The staff were kind, friendly and accommodating and the food was really well prepared and delicious. This mixed with the fact it is one of the only places you can buy IRN BRU it was a winner in my eyes.

While in the area we decided to have a lunch here. We ordered halibut & chips, haddock & chips and coleslaw. The halibut was nicely done - moist and flavorful inside and crispy outside. However the haddock and coleslaw were just mediocre. The portion sizes were huge, however the prices were a bit high for fish & chips meal. I would probably find similar or better quality fish & chips for lower prices. Nevertheless, the wait staff were very friendly and welcoming.

I just came back from britain so this might be a little skewed. Compared to nearby fish and chips, this is definitely better than most shops around in burlington. The fish batter is their key to great fish. Your only 2 choice is halibut or haddock, spend the extra 2 bucks for the halibut if you like the natural taste fish, otherwise, get haddock. Chippers were okay.. it's likely made with tasteless ontario white potatoes (go to England and you'll know what I mean).. I wish they'd just spend the money on russet.. makes a huge difference. Ignore the ambiance.. it's dark, it's old but its clean and that's all you can ask for in an old diner.

Excellent food, although the prices do NOT reflect the portions lately. The staff, until today, have been amazing, attentive, fast, and after years of going, they anticipate my children's needs. However, today they deserved a 1 star (which is why only a 4 star instead of 5)!. Due to my family being large in number, we were asked awhile ago to call ahead and make a reservation so we would get one of the 2 large "family" tables and not have to way 45 -90 mins for a table to seat 8-11 people to come available. When I called to day to make a reservation for 2 hours away to allow for a table to be free, i was rudely informed that "We a casual family kinda restaurant, and cuz of that we dun do reservations, so just come as you are" (exact quote, nice english skills). If your policy changed let customers know, but don't say you don't take reservations when you have prior.

We went to get our fish and chips but while my husband was waiting the beer top flew off one of the beer kegs. Everyone went running out of the kitchen to look after the beer kegs. Needless to say my fish was freezing cold. But my husband was not. I don't plan to rush back there anytime soon.

Not impressed, placed an order via Doordash and was excited to try for the first time after hearing so many great things. Order was cancelled after 30 mins of waiting with no explanation and tried to call but got no answer. If you can't do the order don't accept it! Won't be ordering again.

So far best chipper in Burlington. I've moved back here from Scotland and this was by far the freshest tasting fish I've had since moving back from Scotland. Service was excellent and they came to make sure everything was good. But then again they found out I was scottish so maybe they wanted to impress. But I doubt it as I've heard they are best in town for a reason and I concur. The batter was light and flakey as was the fish. Flakey and airy to touch unlike some of the other garbage ice tried in town. I'll be back for sure. ????

First time getting fish and chips from here and definitely the last. Got the halibut and chips; fish was dry and chips were under done. I'm not sure how this place has a 4.4 rating meanwhile a gem like Dave and Nancy's goes out of business. Very disappointing.

I have been going to the thishtle with my family for as long as I can remember. Alwayes good untill my last visit (it will be my last visit ever). I alwayes ranted to my giurlfriend about their halibit and chips. So one day i finaly took her with my brother as well. We got the food in less than five minutes. It should take longer so we all knew something was wrong. The fries they make are blanched( which means cooked half way) in the morning and stored for the day, I know because my frind worked there. The fries were cold they looked cooked but cold never re heated in the deep fryer. I alwayes order it batter well done and none of the orders were. we all left our plates i payes and told the waitress about the problems and she wasnt concerned at all about it. EVEN AFTER I TOLD HER MY FAMILY ARE ALL REGULARS. I dont know what happened that day but I will never return. 56$ for 3 plates no one would touch. The waitress got no tip the change from the 60 would have been hers for sure but she only showed her face when we we recieved our meal, NEVER AFTER

I LOVE this place. The cooked to order halibut and chips, with mushy peas (huge peas too, not the smaller canned of our youth, creamy but with texture. Dip your chops in it.) and a pot of tea is my fave. The batter is not heavy and beautifully crisp. The halibut is meaty and with body. The chips never disappoint with a splash of malt vinegar and a generous sprinkle of salt. The service is ALWAYS friendly and familial. A gem of Burlingron. I also enjoy the blood pudding, which are baloney sized cut discs, battered lightly (think tempura) and friend.

Good fish and chips and a pleasant dining experience. Haddock and Chips seems to be the trademark here. The fish is done with a very light batter but lacks a fully coating - the fries are fresh and decent but need a less saggy taste. Putting the fish directly on-top of the fries seems to alter the taste. Staff is wonderful! A little expensive.

Hmmm. Kind of greasy. Chips were soggier than I like. Big line up of seniors at lunch, clogging up their arteries. There is a following for this food style. The haggis had been hanging around under a warming light. Have had better.
