This Fish Shop belongs to the category of Sushi restaurant.
Sushi are ok, but tasty ones with grilled salmon and other interesting toppings are overpriced, they go as $6.25 and more for two pieces. Basically, for the lowest price of $3.50 you can get only some beans or fried stuff, which is not appealing at all. You can ask to prepare something per your request, and it will be delivered fast and dirty, without proper attention and quality, rolls might even break on your plate. The thing of this place is actual train which moves sushi plates around the table, but overall it's not worth visiting in Banff.
Delicious, fresh sushi, made right in front of you. Authentic feel and good quality. Some of the healthiest "fast food" available.
Service was ok. Train is cute but silent and as little dusty looking. My 4yr old loved it but kept asking when the whistle would go off. :) Restaurant is very very small about 20 seats going around the sushi chef /train. No reservations allowed. Walk in first come first seating. No udon or other Japanese food. Mostly only basic sushi, sashimi and deep fried options plus edamame. Food was much better than expected. But felt crowded and awkwardly quiet at the same time. TV was on with soccer but no sound. Probably some ambient music would make it more comfortable.

Good sushi, a little on the pricier side but it's in Banff!! It's a conveyer belt sushi place with a twist! There have an actual toy train carrying the sushi around. The staff is very friendly.
We've been to alot of sushi restaurants, this one was definitely unique. The setup was; you sat around the sushi chef with a model train circleling him on a track. The chef would make up sushi dishes and place them on the train carts and the dishes go around until people grab them. The difference sushi types are placed on different coloured plates indicating different prices. We didn't really have a complaint, the restaurant seemed small and for the the location and time we arrived it was slower. I believe that this location must gets very busy with very limited seating.
Absolutely amazing sushi and amazing experience with the food train! Staff is very friendly and the sushi is some of the best sushi I’ve had. Be careful as the bill does add up when you keep plucking the tasty sushi off the train...lol! Will definitely come back the next time I’m in Banff.
Open for takeout, that was great for us. The sushi was good, as always! (This review is a few months old, below is the new one) New review on this place: I ordered take out at about 1pm, just after their opening. Such a disappointment. Everything in my order was stale, obviously was not prepared in front of the customers as expected in this restaurant. Looks like for take-out customers aren't getting fresh food.
Always good, has been for many years. Try the Lulu tuna.
Delicious sushi for a reasonable price. Plus the stuff is very friendly !
Some of the best sushi ever- made to perfection! Special requests cheerfully met. Fresh and the functional electric train around the sushi bar a great touch. Will definitely be back!!
Food was great!! Staff were so kind and friendly, went above and beyond, definitely my go to sushi place in Banff.
We grabbed sushi and some bowls from here for dinner. I'm sad that we couldn't have seen this place in action. The covid rules stop that fun. That didn't stop this place from delivering some of the best sushi we've had. It felt like it was the closest thing to an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant we can obtain in this part of the world. Thanks for delivering such excellent food!
Not a good place to eat. Sushi was NOT fresh and very poor quality and tasted off
A really good dining experience. Exceptionally friendly service and great prices.
Fresh sushi and hot foods available. Can pick up food plates from the revolving sushi train but can also order off the menu. Easy and delicious.
Good quality sushi. It's not a big place and seating is at the sushi bar.
This is a great sushi spot with a Canadian flair - the CN train locomotive pulling the sushi cars around the track. Entertainment is provided by the sushi chefs standing in the centre making small works of art with swift hands and sharp knives!
I LOVE the sushi train! Good sushi, great service, and awesome icecream!
Don't be fooled by the size and the appearance. This is definitely the best sushi deal in Banff. The sushi chefs work where you can watch and appreciate their skill. The rice, which can make or break any Japanese meal, is excellent. The fish tastes fresh and the cooked plates are well done. The service is friendly and we will be back again and again.
Rare find in Canada where you can experience the conveyer belt style sushi, except its run by a toy train. You can of course order any items on the menu if you can't find something you want on the train. I usually drop by anytime I visit Banff for a simple but quality meal for the past 15 years or so. I appreciate the restaurant keeping up with the consistent quality and service.
Great experience! Fun for the whole family. We love the train delivery and the sushi is delicious. The staff here are always so accommodating and friendly.
Awesome food. Great time. Gets busy fast. May have to wait but its worth it
Not a fancy place, but the sushi was nice. An actual model train was very pretty. The staff were friendly and attentive. You can ask for specials to be made up, but there's plenty to choose from on the train.
It's not bad sushi for Banff, but it is not great when comparing it to excellent sushi. Not many selections, tuna nigiri is quite thin, and prices are in line with Banff rates (high). The avacado is good, as well as salmon and shrimp. Staff is very nice.
One the the best, perhaps the best value for wonderful quality of Japanese sushi. I feel it is an innovative way to showcase the line sushi restaurant. The food was so delicious and fresh, highly recommend the tempura and BBQ Eel.
Great place to get sushi. Tasted amazing!! They have a sushi train!!
Due to COVID we weren’t able to dine in. Their takeout sushi tastes like the one you could buy at any supermarket....... fish was not fresh and rice is extremely hard. I feel like they switched owners.
Good place for some quick sushi bite! Feels just like Japanese Kaiten sushi.
It's true that sushi in this place is mediocre for its price but I believe it's the experience that you're paying for. They have a train sushi here that goes around a table of around 25 chairs. I've seen one similar to this in Japan but in this place they made it Canadian with a Canadian train. Too bad I can't post my video here. Staff are very nice and friendly, and you pay by the color of the plate (pink is about $7). We celebrated our anniversary here and we paid around 50$ and we were full. We'll definitely recommend this place.
May not look like much from the outside, but they definitely know what they’re doing! Some of the best sushi I’ve had.
Fresh and yummy sushi rolls. Everything you'd expect.
Incredible experience! Friendly staff, great food, good prices.
Dine in
Fun experience but don't expect too much on the sushi.
Excellent quality by Japanese chef. Surprised about the variety of choice available in this little gem.
Came here on July 1st so the sushi train was operating again! They seated us right away on stools that surround a counter which surrounds the kitchen area where you can watch the chefs prepare the food. We watched the tiny plates of sushi go around on the train and helped ourselves to whichever ones we wanted. They brought us water whenever our cups were empty. We tried the salmon, mackerel, tuna, eel, shrimp pouches, scallops, spring rolls and more. Everything was fresh and delicious. I love how you can eat right away and don’t have to sit there waiting for someone to bring you your food. But it’s also fresh as they make it right before your eyes. We also tried the black sesame and green tea ice cream, both of which were creamy and delicious and only $1.99 on Canada day! When we were finished eating we paid per plate, the prices of which are displayed on the wall. The service was exceptional. I will definitely be back!
Excellent sushi, the train that the delivered sushi is no longer running due to covid. It was fun but still just as easy to run up a high tab. One our favorite places.
You know it's good and the right choice when all the employees are Japanese and Japanese go eat there themselves! I love how I can see the chefs make sushi in person and everything is fresh. They make it, and put it directly on the rotating train which is adorable! If there is something you want on the menu, but not on the train, that's ok! Chef will make you one asap! They charge by the plate and it cost a friend and I about $40 each tips included.
Went here this afternoon with my girlfriend just because we were looking to grab a quick bite. Was unexpectedly the best food experience i’ve had in Banff. Amazing sushi made right in front of you, the chefs were great and the lady that greets you was just wonderful! You may argue that the place is small but that just adds to the experience. It’s always the underrated places that holds the best surprises – definitely a hidden gem worthy of a visit.
Social distancing in affect, great food!
Love this sushi place. Our favorite is California rolls. They use real crab meat
What an amazing experience to have your sushi prepared in from of you by the sushi chef and you can choose whatever you want. The price is by plate's color.
Recommended by a friend. Delicious, fresh sushi and quick service. I called and was ready in 10 minutes. Friendly staff. Will be returning for more ????
Such a cute idea and delicious sushi. The staff are great and I definitely left full and happy!
So good!
Super fresh and tasty, staff always care about customers with their needs. It would be wonderful if the price be more lower though.
My favorite Togo place whenever I come to Banff. Love it! Hang in there! We are almost done and looking forward to the little train coming back
So much fun here. Food goes around on a toy train track. Delicious food and fresh. Chefs cater to customers requests.
I have been in dozens of different sushi restaurants in my life and this one is on the bottom of my list. The staff is very friendly and attentive but the food is mediocre. Everything is quite tasteless and the rice is nowhere near what it supposed to be like. Way to $$$$ for what you get as well. Lots of other options in Banff...
Delicious food, and a great atmosphere. I'm not normally a big sushi eater, but I found plenty that I enjoyed and even did some experimenting with new things. Would definitely recommend.
Was hungry and intrigued, tried the salmon poke bowl and the surf and turf bowl with a friend and all I need to say is that it was delicious, definitely recommend.
Heard about the train & wanted to try it out. So much fun! The food was great & there was a good variety going by on the train. There was also the option to order off the menu, but we didn't need to. The sushi was delicious & high quality, the rolls were great, as were the dumplings. Got to sample some new things & everything was very tasty. We were in & out in less than an hour. Great find, we will definitely be back.
Sushi on a conveyor belt type of place. In this case, it's on a train. The sushi is good. However the price can get pretty expensive since it's per plate. I say it's okay in my opinion because of the price. For that price, there are other options in the town to eat from.
Was gonna leave 4 stars because of the price, but I guess some things are worth the money. You're really gonna be paying for the freshness of the food and the exceptional quality of the service. Honestly, you should be surprised by how cheap it is considering that it's located in a tourist's city! First thing first: gonna give a shoutout to chéf Taka and Masa, and server Miki. Amazing folks who know their stuffs well. Professional, quick, knowledgable, and polite staffs who truly represent the Japanese traditions. Second thing, the food quality: terrific as hell. Special requests are made right in front of your eyes by their talented chefs. Amazingly delicious food with super fresh aftertaste. To describe it better: my dad and I came here two consecutive days for lunch! And yes, this will be one of the few occasions where you wanna leave an extra tip to the hardworking staffs.
Love this place! Super friendly and their California roll is made with real snow crab, which is So good, and something you don’t see that often.
Very cool experience! I loved picking sushi off the train. Sushi was tasty. The staff were very, very friendly too! Highly recommend.
If you like authentic nigiri sushi, this is the best choice in Banff. It was recommended by my colleague and this is the first time I tried this sushi restaurant. All fish are very fresh and the sushi can be ordered on demand. You can pick your favourite sushi and order the sushi as well. My favourite was Salmon, Mackerel and Eel. Definitely will recommend to other friends who love sushi!
Lunch
Everything was good! Best sushi house and reasonably priced???? servers are also very friendly and helpful
I really enjoyed this place. The train is cute and the chefs making the sushi in front of you is fun. The sushi isn't amazing or anything but it's great considering it's in the mountains. The service is good as well!
I found the idea of the little train creative. I also like it because sometimes, I'm not sure how much to order and here, you can eat until you feel full without overeating or leaving hungry :) The staff was very nice. Also, it is pretty entertaining to watch the food being made.
One of the only places for better sushi in Banff. Visited here 4 years ago and it was great. Unfortunately not as good this time. Rice is definitely not up to quality and fish is mediocre. 3 + 1 star for friendly staff.
I never imaged that I would meet such a cozy Japanese sushi spot here in Banff. Amazingly found that all staff speaks Japanese. The restaurant opened in 1998. It has quite a bit of history. Like watching chef making sushi and put it on a little train lol. So cute. . Food: aburi salmon nigiri, unagi nigiri, karaage (fried chicken, juicy and tender), edamame (so fresh!), scallope nigiri, shrimp tempura. Drink: Sapporo! Love this spot here in Banff.
Excellent sushi and very reasonably priced!
This is my favourite place to come when I'm in town. I absolutely love the cozy and fun atmosphere, delicious food, and friendly service. My other half is not into sushi but still gets a great meal here!
Nice place, enjoined with sushi. Not the best one but still very nice. Recommended!
Good converter belt sushi at decent prices
Love sushi house! Fresh sushi, filling and great big portions!
Locals place! Have been eating here for 16 years. Note that I only gave three stars but will return always! This place is so cool and the only sushi train I know of in Alberta. Seating is limited. If there's a ;lineup I'd recommend waiting. Wait staff are quick to clear seating. The reason for three stars is that I have noticed the food quality has deteriorated over time. Cheap shrimp in the dynamite rolls and on the maki. It's been bummer but I guess that it is a sign of rising costs. Wish they would reconsider and go back to how it was. Willing pay for it! Chefs and waitresses are always friendly and top notch!
The staff were great and friendly. The sushi was awful. The sushi rice was watery and it didn’t stick to the seaweed as you can see in the pictures of other people reviews. Good ambiance for a small town restaurant. They can improve their menu as well.
I travel to Banff specifically to come here. The place is tiny, so seating is limited, but most customers are good about not sitting around and taking up seats. The train is cute, but the real entertainment is watching the sushi chefs work. They make it look so easy! Aaaand the food is great! It’s fresh and delicious, and if you want something that’s not on the train, they’ll make it right away. A little pricey, but worth it overall.
Best Sushi with best price compared to other shops
Great options! Easy to have a little of everything you want.
One of the best Japanese restaurant. Food is delivered by train. Fun experience. The scallop sushi is my favorite.
Awesome local place, staff is super friendly, cheff was communicating with us if we have any special needs. It's real running sushi, plates are set up on moving train which I really liked. Thank you.
Specialty made to order. You're definitely paying for the experience! They have all of your basics! Don't come with a large group, the space is quite small and you will likely have to wait or split your group around the table!
Sushi made fresh, cute little concept where the little plates go around the train and you pick and choose what you want. Only set back is it’s tiny and can get busy and crowded pretty quick but overall it was a great experience.
Consistently delicious and very friendly service. Highly recommend ❤️
