We rolled into this restaurant 10 minutes before closing and we were sooooo satisfied! We got the special two pieces of halibut with chips and coleslaw - highly recommend the extra tartar sauce and don't forget the ketchup. On a cold rainy gray fall day it gets no better than this :) very satisfied customers.

The clam chowder here is the best I've had in Ontario! Took me back to my holiday in the Maritimes. Loved the pickerel fish and chips.. super fresh and moist with a beautiful light crunchy batter. Not overcooked at all! Tip.. get the large fries... so good you'll have to order seconds to go. This is a hidden gem. Wish I had pics... the food was so good we forgot to take any!

I'm not sure if this establishment has new owners, a new cook or Covid19 caused financial difficulties, but we won't be returning. This WAS our favorite fish & chip place but this time around we spent $100 for 2 dinners, 2 iced tea & 4 Lg chowders to bring home. The dinners had less fish than last summer, the fries were doughy & under cooked & the large chowders were much smaller & tasted like they came out of a can, not homemade. It's a pity bcuz we really did enjoy dining here!!

Americans be warned. This establishment only takes cash. If you do not have Canadian cash they do not treat you fairly. The menu is limited. The fish was good. The waitress never even asked if I wanted a refill on tea. I finished my tea well before my food came. This was my only sub-par dining experience in Ontario. The staff never mentioned a free kids meal.

Pictures don't do it justice - had the small portion of the halibut and the poutine, and it was amazing! I didn't even want to use tartar sauce because the fish was soooo good on its own. I placed a take out order for lunch today. I ordered 1- 2 piece halibut 2 -2 piece haddock with salads instead of fries. I received 1 piece of halibut, 3 pieces of haddock, 1 order of fries and 1 side salad. For this I paid $82.01! I called and spoke to the owner, who was not helpful at all. Cottage Country Fish and chips is much easier to deal with, decent prices, never disappointed. Go there instead.

Was passing through and needed a meal before a long drive ahead of me. Stopped here for takeout. The young lady working there was SUPER nice to my dog while I waited and asked before giving her a treat. The older chap that took my order suggested the special and he was very pleasant as well. My meal hit the spot and didn't leave me feeling heavy on the drive home. Chips were great - just the right amount. Awesome tartar sauce too. I wish it had come with a drink though! Overall, great spot and obviously a local favourite.

Went here a few times while I was up in Algonquin park. Service was quick, staff were friendly, and food was good with sizable portions. They even stayed open a bit later for us the one night so we could pick up our order. Good stuff :) Also, the location is beautiful. There were places to sit outside by the river, and if you'd like to stay inside, there are bay windows to look out of.

Not great service. They made us split a family of 7 even though another family of the same size was allowed to sit together who was leaving When we arrived. Fine. When asking about portion sizes (How big is as small) the response was i don't know. How Large is the kids size... don't know... Im not sure if they were having an off day but for the cost and bland tastes with such poor service.. I would not recommend. Although there are not any other choices for fish in Bancroft so... choose wisely or wait till your visiting another city for fish cravings.

Read the reviews and needed to try this place because I love fish and chips. This was the BEST haddock I've ever had, not to mention the fries and coleslaw. Just when I thought I had no room for dessert. I needed to try the homemade cheesecake with blueberry topping. It was melt in your mouth DELICIOUS. I would like to THANK YOU LADIES, that was fantastic food! I will definitely recommend your restaurant to friends and family and stop again any chance I get.

One of the best ways to end a luckless fishing trip is to drop by here and have a whole lot of fish and chips. Their selection is wonderful and you don't get any more old fashioned than this. Definitely a great way to grab some food for the long drive home and a welcome break from camp food. You'll need a trip to Tim Hortons after this since it will be hearty.

The food here was delicious! There was an incredible ratio of fish vs batter in the fish and chips. I'm also celiac and the gluten free batter was great, i haven't had a good fish and chips in years! We were recommended a dill dip that was delectable. The owner was incredibly charming and her kids were helping to clean up the tables. Such a great family establishment. For an incredible meal with great service, come to this place. Why, you ask? Just for the halibut.

Best fish & chips anywhere I've been in Ontario. The menu has a very good selection of things expected in a fish & chip shop. Atmosphere is terrific. If you sit at the front of the restaurant you have a fabulous view of a massive Canadian Shield rock outcropping several hundred feet high that is very picturesque. If you sit at the rear of the restaurant, you have a peaceful and relaxing view of the York River as it flows by just a few feet away. Can't help but laugh at Rob R as the only negative review here. Bancroft is a small rural town 225 KM from the nearest US Border crossing and he's complaining they didn't want to take US currency? Try passing off Canadian money in a small town even in upstate New York and see what kind of response you get. Guess he never heard of something called "Credit Cards". ;)

By far, the best halibut and chips I've ever had in my life. Just wish it wasn't so far away from home. The fish is fresh and the batter is light and delicious. The clam chowder is the best I've ever tasted, so much clams in every spoonful. The fries are freshly cut and perfectly cooked. Be sure to get the homemade lemonade. Tucked away at a bend on the York River, just off the highway, this fish and chip getaway serves fresh seafood treats. From other Google reviews my wife and I read while deciding on where to go, it's known but others as the go-to drop in restaurant on the way to othe cottage - my wife and I can understand why. Family owned restaurant that has been serving the Bancroft area for several years. The owners started visiting Bancroft 30+ years ago and fell in love with its charm. Wanting to live in this wonderful town they opened a small but busy fish and chips restaurant. With a charm much like that of the town and its honest down home people. The food is excellent and the staff second to none. Friendly and caring. If you've ever considered owning a fish and chip restaurant. You should stop in and sit for awhile. You will discover you are made to be part of the establishment instantly. Who knows maybe you will even feel like putting an offer out and becoming a main stay in the kitchen or dining room.

Very disappointing experience…we are fish and chip eaters. Have eaten all across Ontario and abroad. The food here was substandard. The fish was small. The coleslaw was from a jar and served in a tartar sauce container. The fries had no salt. No salt, pepper, ketchup, napkins or utensils were provided with our take-out.

I have been meaning to write this review since August (when we ate there) and am finally getting around to it now. I would normally have just forgotten about it but the service was so terrific and friendly, that I felt they deserved a shout out and a review. We happened upon them with 2 minutes to closing and they took pity on us and our staving teenagers and stayed open a bit longer. The meals were good and exactly what you want from fish & chips. - good size fish and crispy chips that are not too greasy. This place is worth stopping for and they have picnic tables on the water with an amazing sunset view plus excellent and friendly owners.

The halibut, cod and chips are well portioned and delicious. As another poster noted, a homemade tartar sauce option would be the only small improvement over an excellent experience.

Used to be the best take-out in Bancroft but not anymore. Ordered take-out and they dumped a paper cup of tarter sauce with no lid on my dinners then boxed them up. Thanks "genius"! Halibut is half the size it was under the former owners.

Worth the stop if you're going through Bancroft. They have lots of tasty fish options from halibut (it's in the name), cod, haddock and pickerel to clams, fish tacos, fries and great salads.

The fries were not fresh. Yuck. When you walk in they have a potato bag that says fresh..well if they were fresh cut they would still have skin on them and they DIDNT and as well as they tasted like plastic *barf*. Not impressed. The only place I liked going for fish and chips and I'll probably never eat there again. Very sad. Was super unimpressed with only getting one piece of fish considering they used to give a large peice of fish with little bits.. if you take over a business and their name you should stick with the way they used to do things...period! *As per the new owners *

We were so disgusted in the quality of fish we received. Halibut?? I think they served us frozen minced fish patties.. it was tough and flat. Disgusting. Not like the previous owners. And the size. Ridiculous that we paid 40 bucks for this .Fries were soggy and undercooked. Never will we return. And... they shouldn't be using pictures and advertising from previous owners. That's very dishonest and misleading. Dont visit. You will be disappointed.

Stopped there today from out of town. I never get fish and chips because most places are deep fried batter with very little fish. This place is amazing. I wish I could give more stars. Accidentally gave them too much cash and they were honest enough to give it back. The food was amazing. The fish was thick and battered perfect. Fries were perfect and none of it was greasy. Absolutely the best hands down I’ve ever had and probably ever will.

The fish is good, but not the best I've had. There prices are a bit on the high side. It cost us a little over $60 for three small fish and chip dinners including soft drinks. It is the best choice in the area that is for sure. Next time we are in town I think we will try Chinese.

Meh. Food way too salty. Ordered halibut with chips, seafood platter, and clam chowder. Everything was too salty. I like savoury food and salt, but this was too much. Wouldn't provide any extra boxes/plates for sharing (not even one which is all that i asked for) ... thought that was stingy considering I spent $100 for lunch and tip. Dined-in, but that doesn't mean much bc it's foodcourt style where you have pay (and tip) when you order and they bring you your food in takeout containers .. smart on them for asking for tip in advance bc otherwise I wouldn't have based on food and service. Disappointed with the portion of "homemade" coleslaw that came with the fish and chips - served in one of those small condiment containers; one bite and it's all gone. Fries were not fresh, misleading bc they advertise using the bag of yukon potatoes. Overall, would not recommend.

Excellent fish and chips as usual. They are open for takeaway or you can sit at a picnic table by the river. A gentleman from the restaurant brought out cold water for our doggo, and we hadn't even asked for it (we had a bowl and water for her already). We've never been disappointed here. Highly recommend.

Quaint mom and pop fry house. Very friendly staff and fast service. The pieces of fish were perfectly cooked, not too greasy. All the condiments you could wish for. There's a lookout onto the backyard pond that makes for a nice view and allows a gentle breeze. Worth a stop!

Was not impressed in the LEAST. A two piece halibut and chips , you would think would be two 4 ounce pieces of fish. I got two pieces of fish, likely a 4 oz cut in half, so each piece was about 3x3 squared. Fries were virtually tasteless and to boot, they couldn't even provide HEINZ ketchup. The price was absolutely crazy!! Try UNCLE PERRYS, it puts this place to utter shame!!!

By far the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. Not only were the chips raw but the fish was terrible. The take out cook was cold and unfriendly. The manager refused to refund us for the full order which was 60 $ for 3 orders of dry fish and raw chips. She refunded us for the chips. The overall experience was unpleasant and I told her I’d write a review if the full meal wasn’t refunded and she refused. The manager had the nerve to state that they are the best fish and chips in town !! even after this complaint. I’m not sure how a cook can mess up an order of fish and chips but this place did. For 60 $ you’d expect a little more.

Ordered from here over the years and always liked it. Told many people it was great. Had it tonight and what a joke. Portions use to be good. Now i can eat the 2 piece halibut and go home hungry. Hand full of fries and 2 small portions of fish for $25? Plus charged $3 more for sweet potato fries and i could fit them all in my hand. Wish i noticed ahead of time but got it to go. $80 later and all 4 of us were still hungry. Will never eat here again and always liked it. What a disappointment

This place used to be THE best. My family has been coming here for years, but unfortunately they’ve changed ownership again and have now changed the batter recipe and it’s just not the same great taste it used to be. You now only get plastic knives and forks and instead of actual dishes, they will only serve your food in cardboard take out boxes. Not important, but something that also stuck out to me was that the music being played was techno music which just doesn’t suite the vibe. Complete disappointment and unfortunately we have lost our favourite spot. We won’t be returning.

Loved this place and ate here regularly, but now it's been sold, and the last couple of visits have been disappointing. Obviously the issue is that the new owners are looking to recoup their investment by chintzing on portions, a sure-fire way to lose the long-time customer base the previous owners established. It used to be that the "small halibut" meal was a decent-sized piece of fish accompanied by two "halibits", bite-sized nuggets of battered fish. Now you get what is at-least-honestly listed as a 3 ounce portion of halibut, but noticeably smaller than what you used to get, accompanied by one halibit, which may or may not actually have any fish inside the batter (my halibit had a bit of fish, my companion's was all batter with no fish inside. They didn't think we would notice that?). People like us who got lunch regularly at For The Halibut and came to expect a certain reliability and quality will have to seek that elsewhere. If the owners can snooker new customers in who don't know any better, good luck to them. Sad to see this happen to what used to be the best fish & chips shop in Bancroft.

Awesome! Not only do you get traditional halibut fish and chips but you get to choose between a small piece of fish or a large piece. The only shop I've ever been in over 60 years that does this. Plus they cut their own fish so the sizes are consistent. Highly recommended.
