This Fish Shop belongs to the category of Fish & chips restaurant.
Ate at The British Chippy for the first time a few days ago. A little bit pricey but the servings are fair. The fish and chips are both a little bit bland and could definitely use some salt. Other than that, no complaints and very happy with the service. EDIT: I will take your recommendations and try your food again with salt and vinegar. I'll edit my review afterwards and give a rating then.
It's a little pricey and its better of you eat in and not take out
I really enjoyed the fish and chips. Very Delicious
Over priced for what you got and made me and my friend ill. Won't be going back again.
Fish is fresh chips are good. Not my taste in batter or mushy peas but it seems to work for others. Nice atmosphere. Friendly service
Awesome food
A perfect example of focus on what your good at. The menu has very few items but what they do have is extremely authentic and sooooo yummy. Great fish lightly battered, the chips were perfectly constructed, crispy and fluffy, and the gravy had a real Brown sauce taste.. the staff were fun and friendly. I had to grab a little battered sausage to go, it came so very highly recommended. Nicely done... 1 thought Masala fish, all the rage in Glasgow.
Great food! The fries are amazing and almost become the star of the dish. Everything is made from scratch and locally sourced, this is good food at a more than fair price. As for the portions, myself and everyone I was with are stuffed. I also ordered the coleslaw, delish. I’m not British so can’t tell you how “authentic” it is, but I can tell you it’s tastey!
It's a good place in a neighborhood setting. The place is small and closes early but I like the food. Fish menu can change depending on availability.
Great food, love the fact the fish is wild caught and food is generally locally sourced. Everything tastes fresh and made from scratch. You can really tell!
Fantastic, high-quality, authentic fish and chips! Large portions and made with good ingredients. I have had both the fish and chips and the pot pie and they did not disappoint. Highly recommend.
Great food, large portions, great service. Worth the trip from NW Calgary!
We just checked this place out over the weekend and for the most part, we liked the atmosphere and the authentic British style fish however prices seems high for the portions. The worst part is this location has an opened kitchen and as a result our hair and cloths were baked in old oil smell after. For our cloths, we needed to have not one but TWO washes to get wipe of the smell. This place either needs a major reno or have a serious upgrade to their air exhaust system. Until then, would highly suggest people to not wear your expensive cloths in, unless you ready for cleaning right after.
Great Fish n' Chips spot. The food is all really fresh and high quality fish really is the best part. Tons of food for the money honestly, not totally sure about what the other reviewers are talking about here.
Best Chippy in Calgary by far! Better than most back in the UK.
One of my favorite places!
I had really high hopes for this restaurant, I wanted their fish and chips to be the best I have ever had - but it wasn't. It was a little pricy for what it was worth. The service was great though, just wasn't a fan of their pricing.
Delicious
It is a good British style fish and chips, nothing close to Newfoundland style which I enjoy more (a little bias). But I enjoyed the meal.
They're a delightful British Fish n Chips experience
So delicious, fries were extra bonus points because of how golden and tasty they were!
Outstanding. Seems a bit on the pricey side but it's absolutely worth every penny. 100% chance I'll be back next time I'm in the area.
One of my favorite places to go for fish and chips. Disappointed that they dont have curry anymore but still one of the best restaurants out there.
Best fish and chips in town!
Love it. Great people and reminds me of home when I go there. The chips are truly British!! Chips can be hit and miss in England but here they are consistently good. Thanks Chippy Team!
Service was good and the staff is friendly but the food is average. I'm not a real connoiseur of fish and chips but I know this isn't the best even in Calgary for my tastes. Still an enjoyable experience none the less
This restaurant has greatly improved since it first opened. My only other experience was around 2014 when the fish was awfully soaked in oil and there was a small serving of chips. Oh how that has changed! I'm so glad to have given them another try because the cod was big, crisp, and beautiful. The steak pie was a little dry but a touch of the amazing gravy on top was phenomenal. I would greatly recommend this place. ????
The sets were really expensive 18 dollars for fries and one piece of big fish you could choose haddock or cod but there was a Groupon for 17 dollars and you could get 30 dollars worth of food. It was expensive but was really good
Always natural ingredients. Organic potatoes for fries, non-GMO oil. My regular place for fish&chips.
Very nice restaurant, the food was really good. The curry sauce is really well, and tasted great. Just needed to be a bit thicker. It tasted like back home. I didn't mind the price considering the cost and importing. Dandelion and Burdock, yum! Will come again.
My favourite place to order from when I'm able to! I'm not a fan of fish generally but the haddock and chips are fantastic. If you're REALLY not into fish, they also have meat pies which are just as good! If you're looking for a "treat yourself" meal, this is it. I also recommend ordering gravy to dip your fries in - delicious!
Amazing food, with imported drinks from the UK.
Really liked it! My kids loved the sausage and the cod was amazing. Definitely reminded me of my visits to England.
The cod was delicious!
Amazing food, probably the best fish and chips I've ever had!
The $10 lunch special is my fav. 3 pieces of cod with this most amazing, delicious chips
It's alright. Doesn't beat Mr Spuds in okotoks. Menu is tiny
Wow I was thrilled with the food. Very good chips, great fish and mushy peas that met my expectations. Stop in kids eat free on Tuesdays
The food quality is OK, it tastes good. The staff are nice, however very overpriced for the food portion and quality!
We ordered for pickup. The cod and fries were soggy. We ate the fish, but the fries were left mostly untouched. Others might enjoy it, but it wasn't our jam.
Nobody has ever managed to recreate a true British Fish & Chip shop in Calgary; and unfortunately the "British Chippy" is no exception. Very slow cooking times (an hour!), chips were very dark, and the cod was 'ok'. Prices are reasonable for Calgary but the portion size was small.
Great food. But the sit down area is small.
Great food. Bit over priced
This food is really good but insanely expensive for the food you get in both quantity and quality.
Fantastic food, friendly service. We got there ten minutes before closing time and they made us a full meal with two orders of fish and chips, a steak and mushroom pie, potato wedge, and curry gravy. It was all fantastic, and we will definitely be back!
fish and chips came up to 18.75 for 1 skinny piece of fish. the gravy was watery. they were understaffed. disappointed.
Always pleasant service, good friendly staff. A traditional British style fish and chips that is on the less greasy side, but still flavourful.
Great food n excellent service !
Amazing food!
Well worth the drive across the city to eat here. The fish and chips are awesome.
Best Fish and Chips I've found in Calgary so far.
No flavour. Do not waste your money. Made us feel sick.
The fish and chips are good and the service is great it's just a bit expensive to frequent. Our son got the chicken ppt poe and it was a bit dry so i suggest the fish!
The food is great and the staff are very friendly, give it a try!
Excellent food, and very friendly staff. Portions are a good size, a bit pricey though.
The food here is great. Traditional British style fish n chips just like home. The only let down here is the price which is rather expensive (for example $8.55 for 1 battered sausage, is just ridiculous). Anyway taking the price out of the equation you won't be disappointed eating here. I just hope they don't price themselves out of business!
Good food and good service
Oy mate, great nosh and cute servers.
Great fish and chips
The best fish-and-chips have had in a long time
Decent but pricey for fish in chips in a small overhead establishment.
Great fish and chips. Had the take out and it was very good. Probably better if you eat in which would be hard to beat. Try it if you can.
Price, Price, Price!!! These prices are so High. There are people that outright can not afford this, BC has a great following and its highly recommended. it’s legitimate haha yes I actually witnessed 4 English people walk in at 2 different times to purchase meals. Is the place clean? Yes. Is the food great? Yes. However never again will I bring anyone here until it becomes more realistic
Love this place. It has classic British fish and chips and priced reasonably. It gets busy and they kinda have some strange hours, closed during the afternoon but opens again for the dinner hours. But for a little place they make good food.
Omg best fish and chips in Ciwtiwn
Server and food delish
It is ok, may be overrated. Not the amazing fish & ships that I was expecting.
Went to the British Chippy today and we where very impressed. We got the Cod and Chips and Battered sausage and chips and they where so delicious. Tasted just like a chipper from Ireland or the UK. Will be back!
The steak pie was exceptional, with Cornish pasty gravy, and tender, juicy steak. Chips are chips, but I like them thick cut, and the Chippy serves them that way...
Great food
The closest you'll get to the British experience - complete with mushy peas!
Solid place for fish and chips. Love the british fare, reminds me of my grandparents! Will go back!
Very good service GREAT food very nice place to stop for lunch staff are just GREAT so just try it out and enjoy the food and service
Yum! Never had British fish and chips before, it’s really nice the high quality ingredients you use it’s delicious . Who would have thought deep fried food could taste this good. Changed how I look at deep fried food forever (and kind of ruined a bunch of other fast food restaurants for me). Thanks! I think...
I had a great meal at the British chippy. They definitely have some of the best fried fish in the city. However I found the price to be quite steep as fish and chips cost $18.50 and only came with fish and fries. coleslaw was an extra cost. If you are looking for high quality wild fried fish it is great, but if you don't care you may not find it worth the extra money over joeys.
Best "Fish and Chips" I've had in years.
Amazing!!
Friendly staff. Fresh tasting fish. A all around great place for some fish and chips
Not impressed. I was assured that the servings were large and the fries amazing. Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to the hype. Fries were rubbery and lacked flavour. Fish was medium sized at best. At $20 a serving I was expecting more than one skinny piece. We ordered take out and there was no fresh lemon. The tarter sauce wasn't made in house, just some prepackaged garbage. Overall, for the $70 I paid, I didn't get good value. I'm never coming back. There are too many better options out there.
High quality and authentic U.K. style fish and chips and other fare and friendly and efficient service. If I lived in Calgary I’d be coming here all the time!
Authentic place for fish and chips. Had the cod and chips which were good. Wednesday is kid eat free day so that was a plus. Would definitely go back to try the haddock
Excellent fish and chips, good service, and interesting beverage choices. Will be back!
Went in at 5:00pm on a Thursday, ordered the cod and chips for myself, 14.75 before taxes and the server asks if I want coleslaw, at this point the tone for the entire dinner was set, coleslaw NOT included with the meal, 2.50 extra if you want it. The meal arrives in 25 minutes, not once was my water glass refilled and not once did the server approach my table again despite only seating 7 other tables at the time. Food arrives, one medium piece of fish and a decent serving of fries. Looking at the menu nowhere are prices listed out for 1,2,3 pieces of fish and it's left to ones imagination, I felt completely ripped off they call it a "special" where anywhere in Calgary will give you 2 pieces of fish for a few dollars cheaper and not nickle and dime you at the same time. The fries were bland and cardboard tasting, malt vinegar and salt an all time favourite of mine was not enough to mask the flavour and ketchup was the only saviour. 20 dollars for one piece of fish a serving of fries and coleslaw is robbery, any fan of fish and chips should stay far away from this place, no quality, no quantity, zero respect from the staff when I expressed my disappointment, stay away.
Reminds me of home and the local chippies. A little over priced but still worth it just to experience the quality of the food. Im from Blackpool in Lancashire and in my opinion (from a guy that basically lived in the local chippy to avoid cooking while i was single) I havn't found another chippy in Canada (yet) that even comes close to these. Awesome fish every time i come over and visit from Medicine Hat
Stopped in at the British Chippy this morning and had some chips with tartar sauce, and it was absolutely delicious! The chips had such wonderful flavour and were cooked to perfection, and the tartar sauce was the absolute perfect condiment. I will definitely be back!!
Amazing service, great food. Mushy peas are a bit bland, needs a little more seasoning. Otherwise, best fish n chips in Calgary in my opinion.
Was great for the whole family with kid specific food options and coloring sheets.
5/5 (I’m a Brit!!) Yummy sustainably sourced fish, able to do gluten-free. I can’t believe the chips!!! The chips!!! It’s been years! Will be recommending to everyone.
Best fish and chips in the city. Hands down the best. Cannot stress enough. Everything's handmade to order and it's all delicious. I always get the fish and chips obviously, my wife always gets the steak pie and she loves it.
Ordered out on the way home. 1. Placed an order for the cod and chips [1/2] - enjoyed the meal. 2. Placed an order for just the sausage. had with other food...first time having it breaded - was good. The staff was helpful and pleasant to deal with it. Will definitely go back for another order of cod and chips, or halibut and chips next time I am in the neighbor hood...
Smells like a deep fryer but what else should you expect. Fish is good. Fries were soggy.
Great Fish and chips friendly staff
Fantastic food - but yeah, the prices are high :) To those other reviewers who found the taste of the food not to their liking, let me share this anecdote. My mother is from Stoke On Trent in England - not far from Manchester, where I understand the owners of this place are from. While she never regretted emigrating to Canada, she often lamented that she just couldn't get a "decent" fish and chips in Calgary. The thing about fish and chips (at least in England) is it's kind of a regional dish. As you travel around the island, you'll find the fish and chips tastes different in different regions. So what you're getting here is "Manchester" fish and chips - and I'm here to tell you that what the British Chippy serves is *EXACTLY* what you'd get in Manchester. Alas, my mother went to her grave never having experienced this place - I know she'd have smiled and said "ahh..... AT LAST!" To her (and my) taste, the fish and chips served here in Canada just tastes different. I won't say better, I won't say worse, just DIFFERENT. And if you're used to one style, you're likely going to find a different style not to your liking. If you're not ready to try a high-quality DIFFERENT fish and chips than what you're used to, then by all means, stay away. But if you're willing to be adventurous (and/or if you're from anywhere near the Midlands of the UK!), by all means make a beeline for this place. PS - LOVE the mushy peas and curry sauce (very authentic!) - but - while I understand why the fish and chips are pricy, these items should be much cheaper than priced here. Alas.
Serving size was perfect in my opinion, just the right amount of batter vs fish and perfectly cooked, you can tell it's not frozen fish like pubs and some restaurants. Chips were great and plentiful, should have ordered some gravy, next time.. The coleslaw was really good and good size too. Friendly service, clean restaurant, we'll definitely go back again,
Delicious fish, tasty gravy, and generous portion sizes. Excellent meal!
so not worth the price
First Fish and Chips in Alberta. Would recommend, I will be back here.
Great fish.... Great prompt and friendly service... Clean and awsome enviroment
Headed here after the Cavalry match on Saturday needing a pick-me-up after the defeat. Simple menu and me and ordered the fish and chips. I had the cod with the mushy peas while my colleague ordered the haddock. If you want the strong fishy taste haddock is the way to go. Can't go wrong with either as they were both delicious.
Pretty decent fish and chips!
After hearing all the glowing reviews we decided to visit what was supposed to be "The Very Best Fish and Chips in Calgary". What a disappointment. The fish was skinny and the fries were so greasy and soggy as to be inedible. With an extra of mushy peas (tasteless), the bill came to nearly $50 before a tip. Will not go again, prefer, Joey's Only or Original Joes. Both less expensive and have much better fish and chips.
Nice
Classic Brit style chips and fish. Only one I have found in YYC
Hours are limited so make sure you check before you go. Some of the best cod I've had in Calgary, cozy and nice.
Let me just start by saying that I am so thankful they are still in business, and growing from what I can see! Times are so tough now with COVID19, and small businesses like the British Chippy are hit the most. They have been my absolute favourite fish and chips spot in Calgary since they opened. In 2016 I moved to Vancouver, BC, and have had their "best" fish and chips - which was good for sure, but not quite at British Chippy's level. I also lived in Newfoundland for a few years before, so I've had my share. Now, fast forward to 2020, we've moved back to Calgary. The only sad part is, we bough a house on the northern end of the city, which means a 40 mins drive to the south to have my favourite fish and chips - but well worth it! Been super busy with the move, toddler at home, and #2 on the way; this past weekend was our first chance to go make the worthwhile trek. Ordered takeout(for COVID19 precautions) and had it in the car right away to enjoy it fresh. Exactly as I enjoyed it all those years ago; their thin batter is the big differentiator. You really get to appreciate the natural taste of the fresh fish without being overwhelmed with thick batter. And the fries are to die for. Well worth the wait as they make each order fresh. Also, for those other reviewers bellyaching about the prices; I recommend brushing up on your Economics 101 - to compare today's food & dining out prices to what you were accustomed to in the 90s is a little out of touch. I might not be able to make it out as often as I like (versus when I used to live in south Calgary pre-Vancouver years), but when I do it'll be a special treat each time. Would love to check out the Okotoks patio location when the pandemic abates. Keep it up British Chippy team -- I won't waste my time at any other chippy in Calgary! When you've had the best, why bother?
Great fish and chips!! Only advice I can give being from a Scottish family (immediate family) is to.add more salt and malt vinegar to your mushy peas (many places here haven't got this yet). Then to give you a step up, instead of just HP make brown sauce, it's just HP with malt vinegar!
Proper British Chippy.
I had the haddock and chips. From a South African where there is great fish and chips on every corner, this was amazing. They waiting time was a bit long but well worth every minute! This was a fantastic treat, reminds me of home!
Chips weren’t very good but I did enjoy the scallops.
Excellent
Is this the end of an era..The British Chippy used to my go for a taste of home..today was not a good day..something went wrong with the mushy peas..the curry sauce was watery and what was happening with the paper thin batter..lets hope it's business as usual the next visit from the Hat. With the excellent customer service response, took advantage of revisiting the British Chippy via take out and I was not disappointed, 5* for customer Service.
We moved here nearly exactly a year ago now (from Britain), and pretty much since then we have been meaning to visit the British Chippy to see if it lived up to the name. We finally went tonight, and although I can't say the food was bad at all, it really didn't have that 'fish and chip'-ness to it. The chips were a little over-fried in comparison to any chip shop in England and so didn't have the some soft some crispy nature that they should. The fish itself was rather tasteless, but battered well, and sometimes the taste of the fish cannot be helped by those making it. Oddly, they didn't 'season' (i.e. salt and vinegar) the food before serving. Having visited countless fish and chip shops back home, I can tell you for a fact that this is unusual, and it leaves the seasoning to the customer which for some reason just isn't the same. All in all, the experience wasn't a bad one, obviously it is a bit pricier than what you would get in Britain, but that is the cost of business, the food didn't taste bad, and is probably the best you might find in Calgary, but it doesn't compare to a 'British Chippy'.
Friendly staff and really good service. The food, however, was not good. The fish had a nice not greasy batter but was stringy and in fact, dryed out in the ends of each portion. Chewy texture. Quite disappointing as we visited the location years ago and remember the food as well prepared and tasty. Definitely not worth $17 for piece of dry flavourless cod? and some chips.
This place is great! For British food. While you're at it you can drink American wine, and smoke some French cigarettes. I hope you enjoy the view from Topsy Turvia. The staff are very friendly and nice.
This place os always awesome.
Wonderful owner, definitely order the fish and chips! ????
The place was very authentic, friendly staff and great quality of food. Their tarter sauce was amazing, the best I've ever had, and I usually dont like tarter sauce. The serving size was perfect, came home very happy and full. I recommend coming to the British Chippy. I will mention they serve only one fish fillet incase you were curious, but I over heard the owner say they weigh it to be about the same as two. Either way it was still delicious! Not too oily, just the right amount of fish and batter. Will definitely come back.
Yummy and cozy.
Little expensive but good
Absolutely delicious fish and chips!
Always a great experience here! We miss Irish chippers and this is the closest we've gotten to going home during the past 3 years, thank you!
Yummy!
Best fish n chips this side of estey's fish n chips in Miramichi NB!
Awesome fish and chips!
Yeah sorry, not good at all. We lived on Vancouver Island for a couple years and obviously have been spoiled with fresh fish. We ordered three dinners of the cod and chips. The service was not ideal as it took 10 tries for almost 25 minutes to get through to place an order. They were busy and we thought that was a good sign. But we were very disappointed as the cost is very high, not enough in one piece of fish to even fill me up. The batter was light but bland. The worst were the chips that were mushy and limp. I’m sorry we will not be back.
Best fish n chips this side of the Atlantic!
They claim to have authentic British chips and they DELIVERED! Love them!
Good fish but nothing spectacular. Tons of people ordering for pick up which is great but it's detrimental to the people sitting in house as they have to wait much longer. This business would do better just offering takeout as their service is just not great. Probably wouldn't come here again as it's just mediocre.
Ok, but not my favorite dish and do place. It is a "fast food" atmosphere, so nothing to good there, but the food just didn't do anything to make up for it, nor did the price
Me and my partner recently visited this restaurant for a take out order of fish & chips + battered sausage & chips with a side of mushy peas. Unfortunately we were less than satisfied. Firstly, the quantity of chips was average at best considering the $15.95 price tag; the chips taste however, was ok. Secondly, the battered sausage was cooked well however the quality was awful, I can only describe it as turning into a thick, odd tasting paste when chewed. It was inedible after the first bite. Also the amount of fish was minimal, there was more batter than fish. Finally, the mushy peas were great but paying an extra $2.50 felt a bit steep. All together the cost was over $30 for a meal worth $20 at best. I am from England, I know what a good fish and chips taste like, and unfortunately this place let me down.
As a Brit who hadn’t had his beloved fish ‘n’ chips for approaching half a year I made the trip here and I was pleasantly surprised. The chips and mushy peas were great and the fish fresh. Batter could’ve been lighter and crispier but overall very nice. Having said that, I did enjoy the scraps. Lovely surprise having British soft drinks such as Irn Bru, Dandelion & Burdock, Vimto etc available.
Always a good meal. Friendly staff and good service.
Great Fish and chips. The staff are fun and have a system to get you food that is fresh and crisp.
Expensive for fish and chips, but the fish is stellar. Eat in, as the chips don't take out well and go soggy.
I can never figure out the hours.
Good old fish and chips served with love! A real taste of back home!!
Our last two times have been disappointing. A place called the "British Chippie" should have exemplary fish n chips. Our chips were soggy and luke warm, the fish over done. It seemed like hastily prepared food. Yes the staff is friendly, but if the food sucks that doesn't matter.
We ordered take out 2 pieces of cod,2 pieces of haddock, order of fries and 1 beer for $92! Way over priced and the food was nothing to brag about. Won't eat there again.
Yummy! Authentic! Just missing the newspaper wrapped around it. ????
Just got back from Saturday lunch at the British Chippy. In almost fourteen years living in Canada these are the first cod and chips that actually tasted like the ones at home do: proper northern English chippy food (at Calgary prices), albeit a long way away from the nearest ocean. To find mushy peas of any sort in Canada, never mind the good ones, was such a treat too. No problems to report with the customer service, but it wasn't very busy. I only wish that they were a little more centrally located.
We like going here nice clean restaurant always busy even during lock down.
For that "just around the corner" fish and chips place, it's perfect! They have a quaint menu but they execute on it which is why we go back.
By far the best Fish and Chips in Calgary.
I was really worried that The British Chippy wouldn't measure up to my memories of chippies back in Scotland and put off visiting for the longest time. I really should not have worried at all, it was a true taste of home and was enjoyed by my entire family. Portions were huge and the chips were just perfect! Mushy peas were a little under-seasoned, but i think that's more my taste, and was easily resolved with some salt and lashings of (malt!) vinegar. I'll be making the long drive from the NW every time i get home sick from now on. Edited to add: plus there is Irn Bru :)
Extremely overpriced, $18.50 for a fish and chip. Fries were soggy, tasted like they were fried in old oil and then microwaved. Fish was just okay. Strip mall food at fine dining price. Service was not great the lady didn't even greet us as we walked in and she was not friendly and seemed like she hated her job. Will never visit again.
Just moved here from Newquay, Cornwall England and was excited to try the food. The fish was rather small than I am used to, although I have to say the batter was super nice. The chips tasted like back home. The only problem is the price. It cost me about $23.00 for just myself. I only ordered fish and chips and a can of coke. Not even any sides. I won't be able to be a regular here, this will have to be a very special occasion type place since I have a family of 6.
When we picked the order at the time we said we would, the fish wS cold and soggy. So were the fries. For the price we paid, it was a bad buy.
This place was recommended by a family member. We were so excited to try the cod that we ignored the high prices of the meal. The cod was ok, but the fries were not good at all. We will not be returning to eat here. The service was very good though.
it is so hard to eat fish and chips anywhere else after eating here! It is really the best!
I had cod and chips with a side of coleslaw (and extra tartar sauce!). My friends also had the cod. It was absolutely delicious. Moist flaky fish with just the right amount of crispy batter. Perfectly cooked, so it wasn’t greasy. The serving of fish was large, so one piece was ample. We really loved the French fries, too. They’re made from organic Agria potatoes grown locally in Strathmore. Beautiful firm, flavorful and yellow-fleshed potatoes. It took us half an hour to get there, but it was totally worth the drive.
Great food and service.
The food was below average and the fries were soggy. $18.50 is a joke for strip mall food. Make no mistake your money would be better spent elsewhere.
Found it over priced for what you got small portions
Food quality is really high and the service is great. It's nice to see them taking the vaccine mandate seriously.
I'm pretty picky about fish and chips. Always, always fantastic! Don't leave without trying the fried fresh banana or pineapple fritter!
Old fashioned fish and chips!
We have been coming to the British Chippy since opening night and have always had a nice meal. Unfortunately our takeaway experience on Wednesday night was a big let down. The chips were brown, dry and overcooked and cod was very dry. We were very disappointed with the meal. If i had been dining in I would have sent the food back. If we go back hopefully the food will be back to its usual high standard.
Had dinner at the British Chippy, chips with tartar sauce, and it was delicious! The chips had such wonderful flavour, were not greasy and were cooked the way I like them. Good fish with thin batter and also really enjoyed the tartar sauce Will definitely go back!!
Good quality food. Generous portions
I liked it better when the chips were smaller. I still think their prices are too high. The product is good.
Cute and friendly
We got takeaway this evening and we were disappointed to say the least. We have eaten in the other location before so thought we would try this one as it is closer to home. We got 2 haddock and chips ( cod was out of stock) a fish cake and battered sausage, a curry sauce and coleslaw. The batter was soggy and very greasy, oil definitely needs to be changed the fish cake was not cooked fully in fact it was raw, I’ve never had a fish cake like this in my life. Sausage wasn’t great either. We ended up throwing all of it in the bin, definitely a waste of money. On the plus side the staff seemed nice and friendly. Was not expecting the food to be so disappointing. Would of liked to of rang instead of leaving a review but you had already closed.
People are super nice and accommodating, I bought a voucher and did not have the chance to redeem it due to COVID19 lockdown , they still honored my expired voucher and were super cool about it. Thank you!!
I absolutely love the food here it is always delicious when i go. However the prices here are extremely overpriced. It costs 3.50 just for gravy as well for coleslaw. Also the portion sizes are always inconsistent. Every time i order an extra order of fries (for almost 6 dollars), its always a different amount. Sometimes the size of what i get with my fish sometimes way more and sometimes none at all. For the price they charge, the consistency is seriously lacking. Im from the east coast and everyday i could get twice the amount for almost half the price.
Decided to go here a week after being in the UK. The fish and chips, and the battered sausage, were just as good! Will definitely go back!
Huge orders, very tasty
The nearest I found to proper English fish and chips. I’ve visited both locations and they are equally brilliant.
Overrated place . Visiting from Toronto was looking to try some thing special and thought of fish and chips. I googled and found The British Chippy Ltd and drove almost 25 min to get there because of reviews and some articles. Fish was totally dry and without any texture and oily. Check my picture. Not even closed to fish and chips available in Toronto or what I try in Europe. Price was high. Understand rent and other living cost in Calgary area for fish. But why charge customer for Can of pop(Coke) $2.75 and Tea for one 3.75 ? Overall staff was friendly but definitely not a place for fish and chips.
Finally, after months of talking about going, hubby and I went tonight. Both had cod and chips with a side of cole slaw. Couldn't finish my meal. Thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our supper. Solid fish piece and loved the chips, nice and meaty. Will definitely be back.
Great fish n chips
The best in Calgary for authentic fish n' chips!! Get there early, it fills up fast!! So delicious, light batter, and the fries were perfection!
Chips were burnt, sausage didn't taste like British sausage from the chippy (like it had been pulled straight from the freezer) and very expensive. Won't be going back.
Was not a fan of the French fries. Soggy and starchy. The fish was fresh and crispy though
Arrived just before noon on Friday Sept. 11th 2015. We were seated quickly and our orders taken quickly. That is the end of the "quickly". By 12:20 our food had not begun to arrive. We decided that if it hadn't arrived by 12:30. we would leave. I set my phone to ring at 12:30. At 12:29 the food arrived. Yes we stayed and ate it but the annoyance of the slow service put a damper on the experience. The quality of the fish and chips was good but no better than can be had at Joey's, Trawlers etc. The quantity of chips was more than adequate. The quantity of fish was barely adequate. The value for money, even if the service had been good, was NOT adequate. $35:00 for two pieces of fish, plenty of chips and two soda pops can be beaten and IS being beaten by many fish and chip shops in Calgary. The management saved money on staff today but they lost two future customers and gained some poor publicity. Laurence Freedman.
Great food and very nice staff. We will definitely go again and recommend to friends.
Delicious food. Fish was perfectly battered, not over loaded like most other places. Chips were spot on! Coleslaw was light and fresh with a nice little kick! If you have never been I would suggest you give it a try. Definitely worth the trip!
Best fish and chips this side of the pond.
Fish and chips were great, clean location, unfortunately pricing is high for what you get.
The fish & chips were very good, but sitting inside the shop would have made it much better. We will try again when Corona virus is gone or at least under control. Thank you!
Great staff and fantastic food.
It was greatly British!
Excellent fish and chips, solved our cravings????picked up to go, great atmosphere during our brief in and out and smiling service. Thanks The Durette Family
Really good fish and chips and not pricy
Fresh and quick service. Unfortunately the fries weren't crispy at all but I presume that's mostly due to having to take it to go. Hopefully can come back when dine in resumes. Update: I have changed my review from 4 to 5 stars because I am a small business owner, my mom and I had a restaurant for 3 years and I realize how much people's ratings and reviews can affect not just the business but also the person running the business, especially when you try your hardest to do everything perfect and it still is not good enough. Reading through some of the harsh reviews from people who have no idea what it's like running a small business, especially in this industry, made me realize I was being to harsh. There was nothing wrong with the food, just my personal preference on the fries, now that I realize that is how british chips traditionally are I will know to request them to be a bit crisper next time. Thank you for the response and explanation. I LOVE fish and chips and can't wait to be back to actually have a sit down dinner!
I was treating my girlfriend to a special night out. Everything turned out to be an extremely bad experience. Starting from the wait time which was doubled from what we were told. When I finally questioned about the order. He looked over and said oh here it is. We were both starving and only lived two minutes away. We couldn’t eat any of the fries they were all very soggy. The batter on the fish was also very soggy, and most of it stuck to the box. We ended up throwing out half our order. What a huge waste of time and money. They have since responded to my post. Promised a full refund which was never received. I have tried contacting them several times after this. It appears this was just lip service . Not a very good business practice people.
Very underwhelmed. Portions were very small for how much the dish cost, and the fries were mediocre. I wouldn't be so critical about the fries anywhere else, but considering this restaurant only serves two things ,"fish" and "chips", they should be much better.
Excellent food, polite and efficient waiting staff. And the best British Fish n Chips I have found in Canada so far!
Amazing. Delicious fish and proper chips. Everything comes out fresh and piping hot. Service was stellar.
Not very impressed high price,no taste
Great fish and chips! Great service
The food is great
Favorite fish and chips in yyc
Top notch food and friendly service. A true gem of a dining experience.
Sorry, but I didn't like the fish that I ordered.
Was not impressed, food had no flavour, gravy had a bad taste.
My husband, daughter and I went to dine at The British Chippy at 530pm on a Thursday. The restaurant is small with 3 or 4 booths and a handful of tables. It was busy, however we received one of the last 3 tables. Two other parties sat themselves shortly after us. Both of those tables had their orders taken and drinks brought to them. Other tables had their food delivered, bills given and paid for and tables cleared. The server never even acknowledged us. We sat for a good 15 minutes before we decided to leave. On the way out we walked right past the server who, again, didn’t even acknowledge us. It was the most bizarre occurrence. It was as though we were completely invisible. I’m sure the food is delicious, even if slightly overpriced. However, because of the lack of service, we will not give it another chance. ☹️
The closest to UK fish & chips I've found in Calgary so far.... But its still quite a way from proper UK style, didn't see any British people working there. It was good but for nearly 20 bucks I'll never go again, the cod that came out was tiny, very thin and narrow, the search for proper fish and chips continues.
Foods OK. A little pricey for what you get.
Went for dinner and had great service and great food. A little expensive, but all our plates were emptied and everything was perfect, so I have no complaints and it was money well spent. Look forward to going back.
We have gone many times and love it every time . Closest to eating in England as you can get . That's where I am from
Great food, traditional British fish and chips done right for sure. Great portions and friendly staff. Where I come from fish and chips is cheap working mans food however this place is very expensive, presumably due to the lack of a nearby ocean, so just be aware of that. It's worth it!
Live too far away for takeaway. By time I got it home chips and fish were soggy. Generous portions. Will try again once vaccinated and can eat it in.
Over priced for what they serve. Joey's only is better bang for your buck.
I came with my wife and two kids on a Friday evening. We were greeted at the door and were seated in a booth right away. The staff was friendly and courteous. I had the cod and chips with a side of curry sauce, my wife and son shared the steak pie and chips, and my daughter had the fish bites and chips. We were all happy with the quality of our food, and the speed in which it arrived. It definitely satiated my craving for fish and chips. We were, however, disappointed with the prices. For our meal we paid $50 (plus tip). For the price of an order of fish and chips ($16.25), the meal really should have come with two pieces of fish instead of just one. Cans of pop were $2.50 each, which felt overpriced too. We drove across the city to try this place, and probably won't bother driving back because it just felt too expensive for what came on the plate.
Originally from the UK, this place is a little taste of home. While not cheap it’s a treat and I’ve never left disappointed. Highly recommend!
Visited Good Friday. As expected it was heaving, but as always, the owner and staff were well organised and had everything under control. We didn't have to wait an inconvenient amount of time and our order was taken as we waited. Food arrived not long after we got our drink order and delicious as we expected. Nearest experience to genuine British Fish and Chips you'll find in Calgary.
Authentic English pub grub, a bit pricey for what it is.
Absolutely amazing fish and chips AND mushy peas. (And I spent nearly 40 years in the North of England!) Tartare sauce also excellent. Only sorry that I didn't have room to try the coleslaw.
Lunch was delicious, hot and huge portions. Staff were friendly and the restaurant seemed very clean.
I normally love British Style Fish and Chips and we went here after hearing good reviews but it was pretty expensive for what you get and very greasy. Nobody in our group enjoyed the food and we won't return.
Not bad for a fish and chip place
Best chippy in town ,great nosh great staff.
Had the Best ever Fish and Chips!!! The made from scratch chips to die for!!???? The Cod and batter delectable and done to perfection!!❤️ Mushy peas were yummy!!????
We love this restaurant the fish and chips are always amazing, you can tell by the first bite that this is high quality fish (worth every penny) and the chips are my favourite in the city!!!
tastes great, expensive for what you get though
Small portion for the price. I wouldn't call it the best in town. Wouldn't go back. $60 including tip for two small pieces of cod with some fries, coleslaw and 2 pops.
Nice place for delicious fish and chips!
The other reviews that wrote about small serving sizes might be a true reflection of their experience but my serving of cod was a decent size with a proper amount of chips. The coleslaw was also a good size and tasty. My complaints are that the restaurant is definitely not well ventilated and the drink prices are absurdly expensive.
Nice place and kind staff goes with nice food.!
The fish was awesome, fries were like home made. Good service Seems like a family business who are trying their best to serve you a good food. P.S.: tried their Okotoks branch , good location nice renovated house. The food was great like this branch
We had the haddock with chips, coleslaw, gravy, and a beer. The atmosphere was very cozy, the staff was super friendly, and the food was delicious! Huge portion of fresh caught fish and homemade fries.
Love the food, service was great as well!
Always a favorite. Great chips.
Service was excellent. Food was 7/10 a pleasant experience
Absolutely brilliant fish and chips. The cole slaw is to die for. Nice job with the COVID-19 protocols. Ya gotta eat here!
Pub atmosphere, not bad atmosphere at all. The food is good typical pub food
Fish & chips just like home!
Amazing place the best fish and chip place ever
????
Best fish and chips in the city...BUT...they're never open. We've gone numerous times only to find the shop closed. Wish they had normal business hours then we'd go more often!
Used to be cheaper and way bigger portion of fish not worth 17 dollars
Fish was good. Chips were bland, could have used a splash of salt. We thought the price was a bit high but the piece of fish was not a bad size Thank you!
Probably the best fish and chips in the city.
Light flaky batter and fish....yum.
We went for the first time after hearing several good reviews but we absolutely not impressed. Neither the fish or the chips had any flavour whatsoever and I expected more than 1 piece of fish for $20. We won't be back
Decided on the British Chippy as we saw a sign that said kids eat free on Tuedays with purchase of an adult fish meal. They have two options for kids one is fish one is sausage. Apparently if you order the sausage which is the same price as the fish meal you don't get the meal for free. We found this out after we paid for our meal eb Even though it seemed high. I think it's absolutely ridiculous that they have two Kids meals to choose from and if you don't order the fish you don't get the meal for free even though it is the same price on their menu. Had this been explained when we were ordering we would have said thank you and gone somewhere else. We also ordered the banana dessert with ice cream and found a long blond hair in the ice cream. One of the ladies next to us saw me pull it out of the ice cream and had a look of disgust on her face. I don't usually like to wave negative reviews but I feel like they advertised the free meal poorly and didnt explain that the sausage meal would not be free. Overall service was fine but the the fish was bland. First and last time we will be visiting.
Food quality was acceptable without being amazing, and the prices seemed steep for what you get (~$17 for one piece of fish and a small pile of fries). Our total bill was nearly $50 for lunch for two adults, a kindergartener and a toddler with conservative orders (one adult only got fish without fries, no drinks/appies/desserts).
Great service and an authentic British fish and chips experience. A little on the pricey side but totally worth it!
