Under educated staff. They do not know the actually requirements for a healthy environment, don't let their safari themed outfits fool you. Today two employee's had a chinchilla in a ball and were passing back and forth. Those balls hurt the chinchillas spine as they hop, not run, they overheat extreamly quickly those balls get hot very quickly. In terms of chinchillas those balls are nicknamed "Death Balls" but we wouldn't expect pet store employee's to know that. That would just be silly.

Crickets are disgraceful. Majority of them were dead in the tub and the employees told me they don't feed/water them. They said if I want live healthy crickets to come on Wednesdays. I suggest buying elsewhere.

One of the people working in the fish department was severely lacking in knowledge. Unfortunately, that didn't stop them from giving incorrect directions for the care of the Pea Pufferfish. They also did not offer any advice at all regarding how many there should be, or what gender ratio is best. Thankfully I had already done my research. Another staff from the same department had gone to the front to ring in a different customer's fish purchases. She asked if I had been told this, that, and another thing about the puffers. She was quite knowledgeable, and didn't offer any incorrect guidance. That is the only reason they still get three stars.

We got our hamster there and it was good but we went to buy fish and we got two sort of bog ones that are perfectly fine but we bought blue tetras and in the first 3 one died, second 3 another died we brought that second fish back to the store and they gave us a new fish but the guy scooped up 2 so we took both the refunded one and the other one, when we got home we let the water they were in adjust to the tanks water but when we went to put them in the tank the one was dead (when we received him from the store he was white not blue) and this morning the other one died. They sold us 4 already sick fish, they were only about $4 each But it was a waste of money and very heartbreaking as this was one of our first experiences.

Lots of selection. But this store is quite a lot more expensive than other pet stores in Red Deer. Many items shouldn't be priced as high as they were (in my honest opinion). I do like that they offer many different animals for adoption though. Like cats, dogs, and small rodent as well as birds. They are taken care of well by the looks of it too.

Very helpful fish department staff with great customer service skills. But management dealing with a return of a deceased pet bird covered by their guarantee made the situation more frustrating and aggravating than necessary. And it could have been done without the attitude given to us. I have always been a long time supporter of this store, but will only be coming here for fish stuff from this day forward, as I can get everything else for my pets cheaper and with a smile else where.

Just bought a 100 pack of crickets for my chameleon. After noticing a lack of crickets in the tub I decided to count them. I ended up counting ~40 crickets, so including any dead ones, there might have been 50 total. I'm never buying insects here again

This place is the biggest crooks ever if you value your fish tank do not.buy fish from them. I had purchases some fish from them and they were sick and they killed my whole tank When i talked to them about.it they sounded more then willing to help and said they would replace all my fish well its been over 3 months and they are anything but helpfull keep in mind i have a 120 galoin tank and thousands of dollars of fish(well had) and now they tell me im beat so be very catefull of this horrific store

If you are looking for a rock star groomer, look no further!! I have a standard poodle and a mix breed poodle-type. My boy is 11 years old and I have found that groomers never really cared how he looked. Melanie gave him the best haircut of his life!! My little girl has never looked more perfect. She is the only groomer there so your fur babies are not left in a kennel for hours and hours. She is with them start to finish and is so sweet to them. I am so glad I found her! It has plenty of products for any pet you have although I would imagine the way they sell crickets is a bit pricey. I go here often just to pet the animals because honestly it's basically an indoor petting zoo. They have tons of furry friends such as cats, dogs, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, and a couple other things that the people working there are perfectly happy to help you in handling them.

My experince here has definitly not been the best... I bought 6 fishes in total and they all died within a day. I followed the EXACT instructions the employee gave me and they all died. My first two fish died in 6 hours. The next 2 died in 2 hours. And the last 2 died in 30 minutes. I ended up spending a total of 70$. And with some persuasive words got a refund for all the fish I bought. But it is rare that they will refund you. They gave everyone else just a gift card. But I really like their lizards and think its a great place to buy pets (not fish) :)

This is probably the best all-in per store in Red Deer, or Central Alberta for that matter. They have the widest selection of stuff for pocket pets, birds and exotics. Other places may have fancy dog and cat stuff (so basic) but these guys have helpful and mostly knowledgeable staff. Even when they don't know, they go out of their way to find out. Good job Petland!

Not too bad. They have a bogo plant and fish day on the first Friday of the month, so take advantage of this if you are going to purchase either of those things at this store. PetSmart is a lot cheaper for plants if you aren't wanting to spend a lot of money. Petland does have some other fish options though that PetSmart doesn't have. Otherwise, PetSmart is the better place to go.

STAFF IS HELPFUL BUT NEEDS MORE TRAINING. I bought a ferret she has been healthy and happy so far. when I was picking my ferret out, the staff told me she was 10 months old and had been there the longest. Look at her paperwork and find out he's only 5 months old. Also, they push you to buy ferret lax and another one there and I can't think of at the moment and it turns out the stuff is poison is do your research Don't buy what they push also look into other diets of it's geared to ferrets it's likely bad for them

We have been lucky that each time we look for premixed kitten replacement formula they had it. 2 weeks ago we got their last can and were ever so grateful to have it. Today we are picking up 2 more cartons of milk for our little premie kitten. I called and the have it ready at the font for my husband to just pop in on his way to work and pick it up. The associate was good, she offered to double check physically to make sure her inventory was correct, and had no issuewith bringing it to the front and having it ready there for pick up. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. We enjoy each experience there. The only negative is they don't carry a can of CA food that is in the larger size. We are afoster home and go through 5 cans of wet a day, it's pricier to buy the small cans and more in the landfill ( we do recycle though). I'm going to try the online shopping those if I can get some of the odd ball stuff we need once in awhile. Keep up the good work Petland.

I went to the pet store for a friend who needed supplies and food for their cats. I had no idea what I was looking for. An employee asked if I needed help and I did. I gave her the list I was given and she helped me find every single item. She also looked up my friends petclub account to confirm that I was getting the right supplies. She also helped me pick out treats and a couple toys. The service was exceptional and the store was clean and the cashier was extremely helpful and patient. I give this store 5 stars easily. The staff is always friendly and work their hardest to help you as quickly as possible - they are always busy but most days you don't wait very long. The staff is also very helpful and quite knowledgeable about what they carry, but doesn't usually extend to pets that are outside of the "mainstream". Okay selection of food for my pet (snake) but not great; prices are better than all other retailers, although local breeders are still more robust in both options and prices. Their free club card (with phone number lookup) is a great savings, too. They also have a pet adoption center, so that is a good thing. Out of all local pet stores, they are by far my favorite and my go-to.

Sometimes it is hard to find someone to help you, but the staff are very friendly and helpful. They are knowledgeable and trained well so that they can correctly answer my questions and help me keep my fish alive. :p I do not have the same experience at some other stores. The fish seem to mostly be healthy and not sad and half dead like at other places. Prices are higher though.

Absolutly disgusted. Staff are under educated and aren't willing to learn. Managers are ignorant and completely ignore customers when they have a concern (manager literally walked away, and refused to even look at us). This company purposely breeds animals and won't split up sexes even when helped to know males and females. Animals are housed in poor conditions with lack of proper care and accessories in place, never mind the crowded environment especially for solitary animals. Please don't support this franchise.

The staff there had an attitude when I was asking questions. The older lady I put the chill try to tell me not to buy something because she didn't think that I should use up on my pet. She had an attitude with me when I said I still wanted to buy it. I overheard her tell the other workers that it was not good to use on my pet and that I shouldn't own a pet. Which I thought it should be none of her business and she was really rude.

Staff are friendly and live to share knowledge. Seem caring even about guppies or goldfish. The kennels in the back are small for the rescue dogs especially the larger ones. Need to get rid of cats and expand the dog area. Cats are a dime a dozen online and at SPCA.

The only place I go to buy pets/pet accessories now, went in after a frog I bought there died the day after I bought it. They did a free water test and found that it was my water that killed him. They asked what I'd used and I told them, (I'd bought my tank and accessories from another pet store, ended up buying their house brand fish supplies as they told me it was best.) And they let me know that its a common issue and they gave me several options that would better suit my tank and help the rest of my fish. They even replaced my frog. My frogs and betta have never been happier and my bettas colors have improved so much since I switched. All the animals I see there are well cared for and the staff are AMAZING. Very helpful. Will definitely go back.

Long story short manager would not take back the hamsters the store sold to my daughters.l was told they were brothers and wouldn't become territorial.Wrong went back and got sucked in to buying 2 more cages to separate the hamsters to find out who was the aggressor.l ended up tr ing to return the hamsters.The manager said he wouldn't take them back unless l return each hamster with a cage.l walked away and advertised on kijiji hamster with cage free to loving home.The 3 cages and 3 hamsters were gone in less then 4 days.

The staff is not helpful at all. The poor dogs are not only overpriced but I sometimes am confused why they put them in a kennel where they people can access them when they are afraid of people or dislike children. Seems like a set up for anxiety for the dog and something to maybe happen.

Small selection of maily sick fish..not there fault,lol they buy all their fish strictly from sick fish supplier.. Just an attrocity. To think some one buys a fish there and automatically gets all their fish sick at home. Mainly problem here is ich lives in a tank for 60days without fish, medication doesnt kill eggs . Shopping for fish at petland is a guaranteed disease. You're welcome

Here we find a Petland that is much like any other Petland. In no way does it stand out yet in no way does it fall short of any other particular franchise. The only real reason you would go to this Petland over any other Petland is locality. The one thing I do find about Petland franchises in general however is although they do have some higher-end equipment than PetSmart you will of course end up paying for that. As such I find that at Petland items cost of bit more than you would find at a competing PetSmart for similar products.

Went in for cat supplies. Store was a bit messy and unpacked stock was blockimg some isles. Decided to go into the area with their cats before I made my purchase... the stench inside was unbearable. It was so bad that my fiance and I had to leave the store asap.

No problem if you are a cat, dog or bird owner. But if reptiles are your thing I would not buy any from them simply because they never have enough crickets or worms. Not only that but I have run into issues a few times now when picking up worms and half of the container is already dead... yet they charge full price for the container. So rotating dead reptile food is not high on the priority list plus asking them if they have anymore leads nowhere. Do not ever walk in here thinking they will have reptile food without calling in advance. Going to start sourcing crickets and worms out of Calgary or Edmonton since Petland is an absolute joke in Red Deer and don't bother with Petsmart either... they are no better. Makes me wonder how anyone in this city manages to feed their reptiles...

Clean, great selection of things that a pet lover would want. However, they need more staff near the small animal enclosures because whenever we are there we see people trying to pick up the animals, usually improperly. There needs to be at least two staff members there especially if there's a crowd. The chances of trauma and injury to the animal or the person are very possible
