As a beginning fly tier, and this being my closest shop, I've spent a bit if time here. Generally a good selection of materials - and what they don't have they can offer suggestions for substitutions which is the name of the game for me. I don't always want to add something new in to the inventory, as you only have so much space and money. So when I explain what I'm doing the guys can (and have) let me know that for example, rather than use calf body hair - poly post can with just as well. I've been pretty happy with the service and knowledge - though as a rank beginner I may be easily impressed?? I've recently signed up for a fly tying class - and they do offer guiding and lessons as well - all in all a pretty well rounded shop. I would gladly recommend them to anyone.

We were lucky enough to take a whole day fly fishing coarse done by Iron Bow . it was a wonderful experience and highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning this sport. Mike and Paul are great guys and wonderful teachers, gave me much more information than i could ever retain, but OMG hooked of FLY FISHING!!! Plus we also had great lunch and got to meet some really cool people looking forward to going to the shop and spending up a small storm!!!

Answered the phone "ya" then when I asked if they carried spey rods, and if so what line weights and what lengths did they have in stock. The person on the other end of the phone said "you can find all of that on our website" and then started listing brands of rods... I live in Canmore, over an hour away. So I wanted to check and be sure before I went all the way out to Calgary. That they did indeed have the rod, reel and line I wanted. I was ready to spend at least $1000 on a setup. But needless to say, with a first impression like that... I wouldn't drop a dime their.

So, like a lot of people, I am new to fly fishing and really didn't know what to expect coming into this store. I was greeted by Johnny who was very polite and took a genuine interest in what I was looking for. I told him I was going fishing in Northern Saskatchewan and needed some waders and equipment. I ended up purchasing a set of waders that fit amazingly well. There was no attempt to upsell to a more expensive model at all. This was all about what fit the best and what was within my budget. Johnny also took the time to research several things with his boss in regards to fishing in Northern Saskatchewan to find out what flies may work the best for pike and walleye. I returned several days later with my fly fishing rod where the team there looked it over and made a few minor modifications to ensure the Rod was ready to go when I get there. Through the conversation with his boss, Johnny was able to provide numerous recommendations on flies that should work for me. Look, at the end of the day people want/need to be reassured they are getting good value for what they are buying and to get good customer service. I know nothing about fly fishing and was quite nervous about how I would be treated because of my lack on knowledge. People, I can tell you without a doubt the service at this store is second to none, they have a good selection of clothing and fishing gear. The other thing I really like is that everyone in the store works as a team and are not afraid to ask each other different questions. Johnny didn't have some of the things I was looking for and he even went out of the way to phone around to different contacts that he had to try and get what I wanted. I did not get a chance to meet the owner of the store, but if you read this review please know that you have an excellent team of people working for you that really enjoy what they are doing. I know this is a long review but I believe in providing feedback for a positive experience. If I could give 10 stars I would, you are missing out if you don't stop in here. David Domoney - Airdrie

I have been to many fly shops in Calgary and this is, in my opinion, the best fly shop in town. Mike's staff are knowledgeable and very welcoming, I have learnt so much just through chats with Adam and G, and they have gone above an beyond in terms of customer service for me. Not only do they have great brands, but I'd say this is the best shop in terms of their appearance and store layout. If you have never been, what are you doing? GO! You won't be disappointed.

Spent some time out in this area a few years ago, dropped into the shop regularly and found the staff attentative and knowledgeable. Stuff in the shop is a bit pricey but fly fishing is a boutique sport, was more than willing to pay the $$$ to support my local shop and good guys.

I've been going to Iron Bow for the last three years and I've always been extremely happy with the service. The entire staff have been helpful with whatever questions I had, from technique to fly tying. I have also done two guided trips with head guide Paul and have had the best experience possible. The instruction and knowledge he provides is awesome for someone who isn't that experienced or always confident with what he's doing. I just did my first float on the Bow River and it was awesome. I can see this becoming my yearly routine. Highly recommend checking out Iron Bow!
