Good fish and chips at a reasonable price.
Great spot for (greasy)fish and chips. I got bassa or sole my friend got halibut. The size of fish is the size you get. The batter didn't increase the size of the meal. ( hate getting a bunch of batter and a small tiny piece of fish in the middle) halibut was way better than what I got. The second day leftovers in the oven were (in my opinion) even better and less greasy.
Great halibut!! You literally feel like you are om a peer by the ocean.
Great deals, food is tasty. locally owned..
Fish and chips. You got it here. Come and let the flaky fish fill your palette.
Made fresh. Light batter unlike other places where I find the batter to be too thick. Love the thick cut real potato french fries. Everything is made with real and fresh ingredients.
I read that they served an awesome fish and chips and I wasn't disappointed. I had the 1 piece halibut and it was very good
First of, the food is delicious. Their chips are made on house and the pollock fish tastes great! Also, the owner is friendly!
Always a fantastic meal here. Excellent fish and chips !
???? delicious! Nice and quick attention also cheap ????
Very very good fish and chips 10/10. Batter is nice and light. My wife doesn’t usually like fish and chips but she said she’d have it again with me!
For the price, this is the best Fish and Chips in town.
Greasy hole in wall fish and chips. Good fish and chips.
I have been meaning to visit this place for years. I should have waited longer. Gross.
Great fish and chips, great price, fast.
The Halibut fish and chips are the best in town.
Really great food and fair prices
Good food, liked it. Flavour was good.
Previous reviews are either paid or got free fod. Not worth the money at all. Fish fillet are too thin.
Tasty halibut
Nice local fish n chip shop.
One of the few places in the city to get properly made fish and chips. Recommend getting the cod over other fish, lots of flavour.
Best value Fish n Chips in Calgary!! I always drive by this place on my way to work and finally get the chance to try it. The place is small with a few tables and patio area along Edmonton trail. They have a wide variety of fried seafoods including Halibut, Cod, Salmon, Haddock, Calamari, Oysters and many more! We tried the Halibut n Chips and Oysters n Chips. The Halibut is so good and very meaty! The batter is perfectly crisp and not too much flour. Taste great with their tartar sauce! But the best part is the fried Oysters! It taste so amazing and way better if you dip it on their malt vinegar! I would definitely come back here and try their other offerings. The owner/cook was very polite and humble and I will try my best to keep his small business afloat!
A standard in Calgary. Great variety of offerings. Amazing Coleslaw. Homemade seafood and tartar sauce. Very downhome ambience with reasonable prices for quality food.
Hole in the wall treasure. Best fish and chips ever. Family owned and great service.
One of those hidden gems in plain sight. I'm English and can tell you this guy knows his fish. Fresh and flavourful. He even wraps them in paper in a unique way. Tip place malt vinegar in before you leave. That way when you get home it infused and the secret to great fish n chips.
Amazing fish and chips lots of selection
moved to calgary a month ago as a transplanted newfoundlander so naturally im always lookin out for a good chipper. happy to report ive found it. reasonable prices and generous portions. its only two blocks away from me - dangerously close. lately ive been diving into my personal favourite 3 piece haddock and chips at least a couple times a week. guy who works there is quite friendly, im certain hes the owner. how do i know? only person at halibut house more than me.
I Liked the food here and the prices were not bad.
SOOOO different from before covid. I wont be back. Before covid I would have given 4.5 if I could. Tarter sauce was grey and looked.like it was getting darker. Whole area had an off odor
They have several kinds of battered fish, deep fried in oil, to choose from. Pricing is what you would expect from a fish-n-chips type of place and the serving size is just right. Small restaurant with limited parking but worth a visit.
The best place for fish and chip.. I 100% recommend this.. perfect every time and very reasonable price.. love his homemade fries and coleslaw.. delicious..! Thank you Vincent..!
Still looking for a great fish and chips place. Quality was just ok. Quantity was too much.
The best
Modest fish and chips eatery owned by the nicest people. Don't be wary of buying seafood so far away from the coast, the Halibut House is a fantastic dining option for those looking for some cod, haddock, pollock, salmon, and more.
Awesome food and service
Good food but dingy interior and extremely slow service. Was told 30 minutes, waited more than an hour.
Good food
The BEST fish and chips in Calgary! Great service. Great food.
Very good traditional style fish and chips. Decent portions, average price.
Always great fish and chips!
Great food.
Did not expect it must try
Take out
Average Fish & Chips
Delicious food, friendly service and we'll worth the trip to the other side of town!
Very tasty! Best tartar sauce I have had ever! Incredibly friendly service. Definitely worth your time to stop in. I have driven past here at least 100 times and finally decided to try it! Incredible fish and chips. Only real complaint i had is that the fries could have been a little crispier. Either way! Very very good!
Great fish and fries. Great people as well. The prices in store are higher than on the website. Still, highly recommended.
Service
Great place if you like fish and the halibut is a wonderful deal!
Excellent, even under covid
This place is a YYC gem. Halibut at this price is amazing and soo tasty , 3 piece meal is perfect. Nice and crispy with the fries all wrapped up in paper for takeout.
The wife and I were in the mood for some fish and chips and was told this place was something to check out. The place itself doesnt stick out too much but usually its those kinds of places that let the food speak. There's very limited seating inside but also 2 picnic tables just outside. When entering we were greeted by the lady there, very kind and great service. We ordered the 2 piece halibut and 2 piece cod fish and chips. Both were very delicious and with the tartar sauce put them on another level. Definitely would come here again and would recommend friends and fam to check out Halibut House.
Always yummy.
Not my favorite Fish & Chips
Being a sucker for fish and chips, working up the street, I had to check this place out and was not disappointed at all. Staff was friendly and welcoming! Will definitely come back again
great fish and clean place
Great selection of different fish to enjoy!
I love the halibut here so lightly battered and delicious ???? doesn’t seem greasy and the tartar sauce is excellent .. HOWEVER the portions are slightly small :)
Halibut was fresh with hot, tasty fries.
Great fish and chips and good prices
Have always wanted to try this place as keep passing by on Edmonton Trail. Not a fancy joint but the food is fantastic and reasonably priced. Had halibut and chips, great crispy and firm fillet of fish. Will definitely try to stop by more often
This place is close to home so I like it. But can get busy and is not fast food. Good prices
Had the 2 piece of halibut and chips ... halibut tasted great ... chips needed a bit more cooking .. great place that's been in the neighborhood forever
I call this special restaurant from time to time since I love the special atmosphere that is outline this place. The crew is extraordianrillyremarkably cordial and experienced. The service is certainly rapid. Also, the food you get is magnificent. I frequent often and I was never disappointed. The expense is decent. I suggest this restaurant to to everybody.
Quite food halibut. Will take out again.
So good. I love this place best hand made fish and chips.
For fish and chips in a landlocked part of the country, this is the best we've had in the city and the prices are great. I had cod, my honey had halibut... we both really enjoyed it and the chips. We also tried fried oysters, unfortunately the tasted frozen so we wouldn't get them again but we'll return for the fish.
The food was wonderful and the staff were fun to chat with, I'll be coming back again when I am nearby.
The menu posted on Zomato is outdated. Family pack of fish and chips was $51.95 rather than $39.99. That is for 8 pieces. He gave me 3 small tarter sauces and when I wanted more given it was 8 pieces of fish he wanted to charge me more. He didn't end up charging more but beware of additional charge if you are not careful.
Nice little place. Thought I would try the basa fillets was a mistake. Not the owners fault as I've learned that's just how Basa is supposed to taste. If you love fish and chips you would probably love this place!
I used to eat here and loved it. The food is fantastic, and the owners are very good people. I haven't been here since I moved to BC in 2013 and miss it dearly. You'd think living close to the ocean I'd have better access to good fish & chips, but I have yet to find any that rival this place. Miss the food, and classic small fish & chip shop atmosphere. Highly recommended.
My hubby and I enjoyed their fish and chips. The meal was perfect as the temperature and quality was good. The person behind the counter was professional and welcoming. Their prices are good for the amount and quality of good you get. There is street parking available around the place. The only thing i did not enjoy is how dirty the main door and tables and chairs were. I definitely kept my hands to my food and got my husband to pour the ketchup as the bottle was so dirty.
Loved it. Great fish and chipies. And you get a lot for what you pay. Definitely go here , but leave some for me.
Food and service was great
Quick counter service. Nice selection of fish, sea food, and veggies. Decent prices. Very Fast food prep.
This is a wonderfully quaint local business. The fish and chips are delightful and delicious. Definitely a must if you love fish and chips. I will go again for sure!
Light beautiful batter. Super fresh. Friendly owner. Will return. ????
Good and fast service
Marie is my fav
Love the smell seaside battered fish! Owner is a hoot!
I love the food there
Tried it after the reviews, got the"special", got the runs. Enjoy!
Excellent service
fast and friendly service
Very disappointed with food quality, I ordered family plater the fries was cold the fried fish was oily. I paid and didn’t eat anything.
Very good fresh fish and chips!
Quite nice portions and delicious. Highly recommend their prices too.
Great good at a good price!
The food is good. Seafood chowder is delicious and so were the scallops. Price is great too. What keeps me coming back is the owner. A lovely man, very friendly, always with a smile on his face. His daughter was there the last time we went! Absolutely lovely. Great customer service.
Found this little restaurant by mistake one day and glad I did. Not alot of seating so you might have to do take out if it's busy. Reminds me of fish and chips from the Maritimes.
It’s our third time coming here and we live by the airport and never have been disappointed! Food is delicious, not greasy! Flavour is excellent!! Thank You once again for the delicious affordable food!! We will be returning again.
Great guy, local spot
The owner/cook is very friendly and the fish is tasty. I recommend the deep fried mushrooms and halibut.
Just like the docks back home
Different sign, same owners and same good fish and chips, best value in YYC!
Great fish and chips place and very friendly staff! We would eat out on the picnic tables in front. Definitely recommend
Best in Calgary
Really good good at great prices! Will be back for sure!
The halibut was fine but the chips were under cooked. Disappointing.
Amazing
Some of the best fish and chips around.
Great little spot. Delicious fish and chips for a reasonable price. Very quick service.
We went to the Halibut House for supper one evening and the food and service is great but the cleanliness is another story. The plastic utensils still had food on them from the last customer that used them. There was dried up tartar sauce on a few of the forks and then when I asked for new utensils they gave me a plastic fork with 2 missing prongs! Seriously, that is disgusting! They probably throw them in a sinful of water and then let them air dry. For this reason, I will not be back to the Halibut House.
Good food friendly staff
Poor quality got the special 3 piece baaa and chips. The oil hasn't been changed in quite some time in the restaurant. Ended up throwing it out.
I agree with the previous reviewer. Fantastic food, servings are quite small though
Today I went to get supper for my family the fish had no taste and the gravy when it sat for a little bit it became really thick like a paste and I didn't like how I was over charged on the gst I won't go back again I had high hopes but dissapointed
Always fresh and hot. Nice to have found a real fish n chips place. Also enjoy supporting local shops
Great fish and chips for a decent price. Check out my video recommendation @ricedaddyeats - thank you for the tasty meal!
Went there about a month ago(while waiting for car repair). We had the cod & fries. Was excellent value + taste. Had been there b4 , over the years. Still a great place for fish & chips. Big thumbs up ????????
loved it!
Best fish and chips in town
Friendly gentleman was Great. Food tasted fresh and delicious. In my opion the Halibut was perfect, not oily at all. Fries were great. Nothing has salt added. Go wild with the malt vinegar and tartar sauce. Will return.
Good fish I will be back again soon tk
Lots of choices. Great price and excellent tastes!!!
Busy place but they try to serve customers quickly.
Lightly battered Cod cooked perfectly! Love how it still comes wrapped in paper. Great prices too.
I couldn't resist going in and checking this place out. Of course I got the halibut - if you are going to a place called "Halibut house" you really should get the halibut. It was pretty darn good - I really enjoyed the fish, nice and crispy, cooked well - fresh and fast! If you are in the mood for a classic fish 'n chips - this is the perfect spot.
We happened upon this little restaurant while picking up other food across the street. We ordered some takeout and it was great! It was busy and the staff did their best to ensure that everyone was taken care of. The food was great and it tasted really fresh! Overall it was an excellent experience.
My favourite place to eat fish-and-chips in Calgary. I have been going to this little hole-in-the-wall, for over a decade. Ask anyone from Britain....they'll tell ya. The Basa is to die for......just not literally. LOL Their fries are fresh cut, and taste fantastic. Besides Basa, they have many different types of seafood. This little gem has less than six tables. Hurry to the Halibut House !!!!!
It’s just a humble little place but the kind gentleman behind the counter always has a big smile to greet you and the portions are always very generous with reasonable prices. They even have Chapman’s ice cream you can order by the scoop for a sweet finish to your meal.
EXCELLENT!!!!!! Honestly the best place in Calgary period for Fish n chips! Or other battered delights!! Good service and friendly owner. Wish I still lived 4 blocks away!
Fish tastes good
It is exactly what it says it is. Just an humble no fuss fish and chips that makes good fish fries.
Best fish and chips in town
Great place for old fashioned fish and chips
Don't
This establishment has been here for many years. Small, easy to miss but don't drive past. You won't want to miss the old style fish and chips. They are awesome. Shrimp are too.
Best fish and chips in Calgary
love this place. great food, decent prices.
Quality and quantity was fair for the price. Taste was spot on and the meal fried perfectly. Not greasy. Will definitely return for another meal.
Fish and Chips was yummy
Best Fish, and Chips in Calgary Alberta Canada. Keep Up The Good Work: Alfred Schlegl from Calgary Alberta Canada.
Greasy fish and chip goodness on the cheap.
Walked through the front door and walked right back out. Saw behind the counter that the man working was not wearing a mask, talking on the phone and touching his face (nose). Then looked and us and continued to stay on the phone while trying to put his mask on. GROSS. Would never attempt to come here again.
I love this place, everything is made fresh.
Girls were very nice , food was the closet to authentic fish n chips ive had thus far in Calgary.Im a east coaster ...
Fish is great. Chips not so much. Rings and mushrooms were great. Unfortunately cleanliness is lacking. Had nice hot tea that was good but the mugs were dusty/ greasy as I'm sure they dont have many orders for tea. The service was fantastic!
Good old fashioned onion rings and great fish
Best fish and chips. Good pricing even better now they have debit! Use to be cash only.
just in the name alone you'd think it would have great halibut, nope, 2 tiny pieces that at best was pollock, stale freezer taste, dead deep fry oil should have been changed out weeks before, gentleman barely said 2 words to us, parking sucks, won't be going back there ! what a shame ????
Want good food come here
Best place in town for halibut fish & chips. Love their cod too.
Great food and service
There isnt too many good fish and chips take out in calgary. This one in pretty good!
Halibut didn’t have any flavour and the batter was very heavy. Fries were also unsalted and soggy.
Ordered 2 orders of the 2pc halibut & fries. 1) food was luke warm by the time we got it home in Country Hills. Should have ate there 2) Would not even consider eating there... greasy & dirty 3) Quality of the cold food: think it would tasty 'ok' but wasn't anything special. Won't go back. Certainly can't get the filth out of my mind ... if it's not clean in the main area, can only imagine what the cooking area looks like. No Thanks
I drive by this place almost daily. Decided to try it. Had the halibut and chips. I was very disappointed. The fish was so thin that it was difficult to even tell if there was any fish in it. Spent extra on the halibut, but disappointed by how thin the fish was. Sorry, owner seems very nice, but.......
2 pieces of halibut with fries is not even 19 dollars. The food is great, the staff is even better. After 6pm you can park on Edmonton trail for convenience.
The halibut was good. The fries though we're not very good. The fries had a taste from burnt oil, it is due for a change.
I love the halibut. Fries not so much.
The price for the amount of fish you get is amazing!! Almost dropped the phone when they told me what the 8 piece was. Than brought it home ate it all up was not disappointed. Will be eating here and again and telling folks about this place. Delicious ,nice amount of batter, fish cooked perfect for an incredible deal. Thank you for soothing my craving.
2nd visit in a week. 1st time visit I had halibut and chips which were very good. 2nd visit I had combo #1 which includes shrimp and scallops, chips .my fish was cod and a side of gravy and it was tasty and fresh. Next visit I will try the haddock.
Classic, quality fish and chips. Wide variety of fish.
Food was good,dingy little restaurant.
Best fish and chip in town and owners great guy!!
Really need to change that fry oil more often
Very poor size of cod. More batter than fish. Oil tasted like it hasnt been changed in a while. Won't be back.
Very good food and very good service. We love this place
Always good
Having heard how great the fish was here I decided to check it out. What a disappointment. We were told 20 mins to pick up, then ended up waiting an additional 10 mins when we arrived. The fish was super greasy, the fish fillets were very thin, the batter had no flavor, and no fresh lemon slices were provided.
Friendly and tasty
Excellent freindly service. Great food.
We have passed by this fish and chip place many times. Always wondering if it's any good. I finally saw some reviews from a Facebook group and decided to drop by. First thing we noticed is that the seating area inside is small. Most people are getting take out. It has its old school charm. Prices were definitely lower than other places in town for fish and chips. We got halibut as it's namesake with chips. The pieces had a decent amount of batter but remained true to its beer-battered crisp. The fish portions were reasonable for the price. The chips are crispy yet tender inside. Overall, we would definitely come back if we are in the area.
Great fish great prices
Nicest person ever! Every time and the food is done of the best!
Tastey fish get the Halibut
Always good, love halibut. Friendly speedy service. I will drive out of my way to go here
Great friendly service and tasty food!
Only in a landlocked province can a place like this generate a 4.2 star review. I've tried to like it, I'm a fatty and a french fry connoisseur. I delude myself into stopping in once every other year, and am promptly reminded why I never come here. It's not that it's bad, it's just not good. The fries may be double fried, but they're wholly unsatisfactory. I try to smother them in gravy to make them palatable, but the gravy has no thickness to it, I can't fit more than a millimeter size layer on a handful of french fries no matter how hard I try. with an abundance of foodie restaurants that do things well in this day and age, there is no reason for this place to exist anymore. Sincerely, A dejected french fry lover
We used to eat here because the batter/oil is lighter than anywhere else we've found. Their halibut & chips was great quality and fish to batter ratio was perfect. Super disappointed with the two halibut dinners we ordered tonight. Halibut fillets were all so thin, it's like they were cut in half and fish to batter ratio has definitely changed for the worse.
Great halibut and chips. Friendly service.
Wonderful hole in the wall fish and chips. Will return
I went there with like High expections my friends were gassing the ...... out of this place. I dunno whether my expectations were too High or the place was just above okay i dunno but definetely didn't deserve 5 starts
Ordered 2piece halibut and chips takeout and was slightly disappointed. The serving size was small and the halibut pieces were very small and the taste was not there. I may return to try something else but I do not recommend paying extra for halibut.
Wonderful local spot for delicious fish and chips! We love the halibut, lightly battered and a great ratio of fish to batter. The calamari appetizer was also delicious. Highly recommend, great value and our go to when we want to pick up fish and chips!
Great fish and chips
Fries where soggy and oil tasted like it hadn't been cleaned in some time. Might give it another try some day. Probably not.
Nice place very friendly great prices
authentic fish and chips
Dinner
Very good .. the guy was relly nice as well
Halibut fish and chips were excellent, as were the onion rings. Not tops in decor.
Nice hole in the wall with good fish & chips. The fish is good but the fries are also surprisingly good. They're actually crispy despite being made in-house (probably). Usually fries like that are soft and nasty but not here.
Excellent food. Good variety and friendly service.
I had the salmon fish and chips and it was soo freaking delicious! He even through in an extra piece!
Had to try the Halibut & it was great. The quality is there. A nice small locally owned business with good customer service. Also very authentic, we got our takeout wrapped in paper!
Delicious fish but you gotta get the fries extra crispy!!!
Just a little fish shack, but it's the best Fish and Chips I've found since leaving Newfoundland. The halibut is crazy good here
Have you any idea how hard it is to find a fish n' chips place in calgary? Just found this place, and it was delicious. Thanks
Really good food. Go for the Halibut!!!
Great little fish spot. Very friendly service. Good prices.
Great fish and chips for a great price! Definitely added to my favourites.
I've had better fish and chips in my life. Their cod appears to be one of the higher priced items and you get about 4 cod split and battered but it's not great cod. It's hot no texture, it simply turns to mush as soon as your bite down.
It's honestly ok.
There halibut is sooooo good. I love there fish n chips. And my kid loves there nuggets
Our meal came out hot and quick!
Food was great, service fast
Stupid prices
The owner master the art of deep frying fillets. the duration the temp is right so it's crispy outside but soft and smooth inside. Better than many restaurants on 17 AVE SW where you get overcooked dry chewy fish... the only thing is the fries were pre-fried.....I ditched 80% of it...
Doing take out only to maintain social distancing. Plenty of hand sanitizer available at the entrance and near the debit/credit pin pad. Friendly service. Food was fresh cooked, piping hot and delicious!
I always enjoy my meal when I come here. I have been coming for many years. The fish is always tasty and crispy. Pricing is reasonable. And the man who owns it is always nice and friendly.
Good food.
I wish I could give this place more stars, as the food is pretty good. But the last 2 times I went the staff was not following COVID protocol. They were not wearing masks while cooking the food, or taking money. They went from touching money, answering the phone & right to cooking our food with no washing hands in between. Felt extremely unsanitary & dirty inside. I don’t think I can give it another chance
The fish and chips I had (cod and halibut) were very different than what the previous reviews suggested. Maybe it was an off-day. The fish was thin and soggy and covered in very oily batter. I ended up eating only half of what I ordered. The gentleman, working by himself, was very friendly. In reading the reviews, I must give it another try.
Like this place. Thank you for your service.
Excellent great service
The guy who works here(own the place?) always has a smile on his face. That's great to see. Very small inside, but I enjoy the food. It's a bit expensive, but it's pretty fresh fish in Alberta so that's to be expected.
Awesome food, awesome service and really good prices
Decent prices on fish
Great fish
Definitely the best fish and chips in Calgary.
Tasteless and small pieces of fish compared to price charged and my fries were burnt.
Great
Wasn't my favorite. I feel like the oil wasn't changed for awhile. Like the fries were dark which is a indication of old oil. And not only that you only get a hand full of fries. Fries are cheap people don't be cheap on the fries.
It's a typical greasy fish and chips spot. There's a good selection of fish and seafood to choose from and the food is quite tasty. I've tried every fish just to see if I had a favorite and mine are sole and basa. They have really good service and they tend to throw in an extra piece of fish when the fish size is a bit small. It's wrapped in paper similar to an old style fish and chips shop. To be honest, I've never eaten my fish and chips fresh since I always take it home. When I get it home, the fries are on the soggy side, so I'm not sure if it's a transportation thing or if they are actually on the soggy side, but they are fresh tasting. I've been here a few times now and I'm not sure about the oil not being changed enough (per other reviewers) since every time I've come here, the fries are golden brown and not dark or burnt looking and my food always tastes fresh. I also disagree with most of the reviewers here regarding their tartar sauce. I feel that their tartar sauce isn't that good. I prefer a creamier tartar sauce with dill pickle in it, something more on the lines of creamy, savory, vinegary. Whereas their tartar sauce is a sweet, creamy, tangy sauce. Overall, I like this place. It's not mind blowingly good, but decent for what you're getting.
Doesn't seem to have changed much since when i was a kid! Good greasy fish n chips.
Excellent food. But could do with a slightly larger helping.
Good fish
Great little place for fish. was not very much batter so you can really taste the fish.
Good fish and chips takeout. Quaint.
Loved the prices Great deals .Overall I had a positive experience !
Good old fashioned Halibut with a crispy coating and French fries. A classic and delicious! This is a real neighborhood gem and great for takeout.
1st time eating here for years, i ordered 2 specials(3pc basa & chips) for the wife and I. Wife complained about a funny taste on her 2nd peice and stopped eating. My 1st peice was good, 2nd peice I tasted something vinegary and 3rd kinda the same. It did not taste horrible and I assumed a bit of vinegar got in the tartar sauce(what a stupid mistake). Few hours later I now am hugging the porcelain.....very sick. I wont be eating here again.
Meal type
Very good taste, real chips as well, very homely feel.
This place is actually pretty good. It looks like a bit of a dump (you'll notice the door doesn't fully open when you come in) and it looks horribly dated, but the food is good, the prices are great, and the owner is very friendly and gives good service.
Perfectly cooked. Not greasy. Very affordable pricing. Do it!
Great food and service, prices are good too.
