Very friendly and approachable staff, knowledgeable about the species they sell, and honest when they’re unsure. Not making baseline assumptions and making recommendations off that is really important, and an often overlooked detail that they’re under appreciated for. All the fish I’ve bought have been happy and healthy ever since, and I’ve found their prices to be very reasonable for the quality and health of the fish compared to bigger stores such as pet smart. They also have great bulk options for substrate and aquarium/reptile-safe wood that you don’t see everywhere. :)

The staff are really friendly and if you are looking for fresh water fish (primarily), this is a great new place to go! Hopefully They will expand their selection in fish tanks. About to Leave Edmonton to go to Calgary and I only have 15 more minutes when I arrived before closing time. Jude assisted me on buying a Medusa Guppy. She also gave tips on what water chemicals to use for a new tank. She is very knowledgeble, friendly, fast and efficient. They know their business well. The tanks are well kept and organized. I don't mind driving 3 hours to buy my fish and aquarium supplies here. Worth it. I recommend this store!

Great knowledgeable staff, and safe fish keeping practices. Each tank is on a it's own system and doesn't share water with others in that section so diseases won't spread. They also bathe their plants to remove snail eggs before selling them. Not many stores use these practices but it sure helps out the customer.

Their ethics are unmatched. Is it a flashy store? No! Their stock is what's for sale, not bright lights, signage and teenaged staff that could care less. This new location is better then the last one. Tank maintenance is good ???? no bubble algea all water is clean fish are very active with no bizarre growths as in fungal or microbial. Variety of species and and like very incredible betas I've yet to see a local breeder or pet store with show grade out of this world beautiful vibrant bettas.....I didn't even know they had the colors spectrum they did so yea my visit was really good he has unique options that petco and pet smart don't have plus the staff actually know what thier talking about

A few reason I’m not eating this place that great. 1) If you mention another fish store the owner immediately bashes that store. Every single time I go there and mention I get fish from Big Als for example he says “oh I’m surprised you never got ick from there”, and goes on about them using a single filtration system. I’ve never had issues from BigAls, so I don’t appreciate bashing a business I’ve had nothing but good experiences with, let alone it’s just bad to speak of others. 2) unless you pick specifically the fish you want, he will give you the worst out of the bunch. Example: He gave me all female Congo tetras which look very plain, compared to the other males which have beautiful colouring and long fins. 3) Receipts are not to be trusted. Receipts you get just say “Tropical fish” and the total with no details. If he wants to compare BigAl and his store, the level of detail on BigAls is night and day. BigAls provides warranty info, specific fish name you bought, and more. In the end this is a place to just get fish, mind you they probably do have the best Betas in Edm. Some of the staff is friendly, but the owner comes needs to be a bit patient and more informative to his customers. Update: reply from manager proves my point as well as others in regards to his attitude. He is very condescending and although my initial comment was very gentle, he immediately goes down the route that “we aren’t a match”, and that I should shop at my favourite store instead like it’s a privilege to show at Aquarium Central. You could have just took my reply as constructive criticism 1) don’t bad mouth people 2) educate customers on how male/female fish will look entirely different and let them have a choice of what they want. Picture on the aquarium itself is what customers are expecting unless advised. 3) provide better details on your receipts. You could have the best fish in the world but if the customer doesn’t enjoy the experience they won’t return. 1) you never commented about not being detailed on your receipts, why not list what the customer bought? 2) Last couple times I was there a few tanks had ick and you even admitted it. So again you really bad mouth others, specially if you’re no where close to perfect. 3) review the other comments about yourself and take it as constructive criticism. Take it as a personal objective to do some self improvement on improving the customer experience (will help business)

So glad to have found a local store that I feel good buying from! If you feel a bit uncomfortable buying bettas in stagnant bowls, or from places that stock starved, dying feeder fish or if you'd rather buy from a local place than a big box stores, this is the ideal place to shop! They have an amazing selection of fish and invertebrates, all clearly well taken care of, and they grow their plants in the water so you don't have all the leaves melting off when you bring them home!

By far one of the city's best freshwater aquarium fish, plant, and aquarium supply stores. Aquarium Central has been locally owned for over ten years and is not a big box store whose profit is their bottom line at the cost of healthy fish. Aquarium Central sets itself apart from its competitors by mandatory quarantine of its livestock and preemptive medicating, effectively lowering the risk of bringing home an illness to your home tanks. Aquarium Central also runs it's tanks in individual ecosystems. Unlike the big box stores that run on a centralized water system that share water between tanks, thus sharing diseases. Because of the steps Aquarium Central takes, putting the health of their livestock first and foremost over a sale is one of the many reasons it has been my preferred source of everything aquaria for over seven years. Over 180 tanks filled with aquarium fish such as tetra's, rasboras, Corydoras, guppies, platys, Molly's, otto's, nerite snails, algae eaters, shrimp, bettas, cichlids, angels, etc. As well as nine huge tanks regularly filled with aquarium plants of all types. It is rare that I visit the store and don't want to take something new home. The staff at aquarium central are usually above and beyond in their service as well. I've never met anyone working there who wasn't living the aquarist dream of having their own store. Unlike the box stores, the staff at aquarium central are super knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. Some of the team have a multitude of tanks at home as well. You'll find excellent aquarium knowledge and the local insight of Edmonton's large aquarium community. The owner of the store is super knowledgeable as well. He is often an untapped wealth of information, as he can be pretty busy with behind-door store operations. But I recommend visiting aquarium central often, for the rare times when the store is empty, he and his other staff can be easily accessible. They can take the extra time needed to discuss your tanks and any issues you might be having. Aquarium Central offers water testing on-site for Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrates. I'd also recommend, before visiting, taking pictures of your tank and equipment, so they can see what systems you are working with or help identify what type of problem you may be having. It could just be one visit that will take your aquariums from alright to wow! Or for a new hobbyist, the difference between success and failure. Let them help you increase your enjoyment while cutting back the maintenance of your tank.

The owner don't have time to explain to you how or what or any basic questions, you got to study yourself first. And.. the fish is expensive.

Staff was helpful and friendly. Bought a fish there and found out later that the salinity was at 1.020 and the fish had an inverted belly. It did not survive the night. Many factors could have caused the death, but trying to condition a fish to a higher salinity while it's in shock and staving didn't help.

We were strictly purchasing all out fish, plants, supplies and material here; believing we were making the right decision. The owner spoke with confidence in his knowledge. Though he is more then a bit curt and condescending, his poor manners can be easily disregarded if he provides a superior service and knowledge. You'll find the owner acts like a bit of a know it all, but his advice sometimes doesn't always ring true when you compare it to other resources regarding the fish he sells. More then once we were informed on the temperament of a species and who they would do well in a tank with only to find others in the store and what was written on the cards on the tanks to say something completely different. Once home new fish can disrupt the balance in the tank (not overcrowded at all) as they fight. You may also get differing opinions between staff on the fish he sells, this may be why the staff is constantly changing. There are other places to purchase aquarium supplies and fish, and we've moved on to some of those.

Aquarium Central is the best freshwater aquarium store in Edmonton! The staff are extremely knowledgeable, very helpful, and always willing to give advice on practically anything fish related. They got a ton of freshwater fish and plants to choose from and also sells some saltwater livestock. They don't carry as much aquarium hardware but they do carry items that you won't find in other bigger pet store chains like Big Al's, Petsmart, etc. Their tanks are kept in pristine conditions, and all the fish are thoroughly quarantined and checked before going up for sale. I've ran into Ich or fin rot in most other store here in Edmonton but never in Aquarium Central. All the fish I've bought here have always been healthy

Best Place to Go for Freshwater Fish and supplies. All the staff are very Knowledgeable and are more then willing to go out of there way to help you even if it means losing a sale. Good example being i was going to buy a bunch of supplements for my planted tank Which i also stocked there and got plenty of help with the set up process and play by play on how to deal with potential problems. but The owner knew i had bought good substrate (from them) and wouldn't have needed it and stopped me from spending unnecessary money. All the staff there don't pretend to know more then they do. If they are unsure they will tell you and help find the answer. Arnold is known in the fish community as our local fish god and Tuan the owner is just as knowledgeable if not more so. For anything freshwater go there. And ignore most of those bad reviews there a load of BS. They are also the only place i know of to do a very thorough quarantine when they get new plants and fish in.

Lovely selection that's always changing, and great care is taken to keep the livestock & plants in the best shape. I've been around to most aquarium & pet stores and this location is by far my favourite. The majority of the animals are freshwater, however they do have selections of saltwater supplies & animals as well. (They also often have some adorable axolotls.)

Went there on Sunday looking for a small fish to be kept in my office. Described that I want something small and easy to keep as it's my first time owning a fish and need a fairly smaller container to set up in my office. The guy and girl working there told me it's inhumane to keep fishes in a bowl and asked me, "how would you feel if you lived in your bathtub all your life?" Then proceed to show me their $130 tank which is the "smallest tank to make fish feel comfortable." I find this amusing as if they're trying to tell me that their tank is as comfortable and big for the fish as the river or ocean the fishes are suppose to live it?! They are being very hypocritical and was judging me when they are technically removing fishes from their natural habitat and imprisoning them for a living... I can understand where they are coming from, but the way it came came through was very condescending for a first timer who are just looking for information. Instead of educating, they made me feel like I was doing something so morally wrong that they are disgusted, and I felt like they are also using this "animal cruelty" guilt trip into a sales tactic to get people to buy their tanks.. It's a shame a lot of good hearted people would fall for this scam... I done some research and consulted with a Vet Tech after and she informed me that I can keep a beta fish perfectly fine in a office sized tank (as seen in my picture) $20 at Petland, this beautiful fish was $10 and he is happyly producing nest bubbles that shows he is happy in his environment and ready to produce off-springs.

He thought our choice of tank was unacceptable; told us our heater would cook our fish within a year; showed us some water conditioner with the comment, "you don't need very much. Only $6.00."; pointed vaguely towards some sand and rocks and a scoop: "and the sand is cheap. All you'll need is a scoop.". I'm not sure we were only after info about the price. We were seeking a knowledgeable person to help us learn what to do. We came to an aquarium store for expert advice, not to be made to feel like we were inferior for not knowing anything. We know we don't know anything. We were looking for help. Attitude is everything and every employee represents the business. It seems like a business like that might benefit from a growing client list. We will never be back to Aquarium Central.

Visited Aquarium Central for the first time and I am very impressed. The owners and staff are incredibly passionate about what they do and it shows. This is the place to go whether you are an expert or just getting into this hobby. The staff are always eager to chitchat and give advice. Even with Covid delays, there are huge selections of fish and plants. All the aquariums are well kept. Clean, healthy and happy. Will definitely be shopping here from now on.

Prices for fish are moderate/fair but accessories are overpriced. -1 star ???? because we experienced some conflicting advice and reccomendations that we later learned were more for profit and not based on fact. Guess we should have done more of our own research... Also there is minimal environment enrichment put into freshwater tanks.. They're clean but too clean. Just sand and a filter mostly. Kinda sad to see fish exposed with nowhere to hide or explore. Especially compared to the highly planted and complex tanks at the Petland chain store nearby. Overall I do reccommend this place, just be sure to fact check before making purchases based on advice given by a salesperson trying to sell you something.

My girlfriend and I are new to the saltwater hobby and have been to numerous other stores around the city each time leaving with more questions the originally going in with. The ladies were very helpful and pointed us in the right direction and even did some research for us while we were going home to get a water sample for her. Did not have great experience here and was turned off by the overcrowding of one of the marine tanks. The owner responded that the overcrowded tank did not contain fish that were for sale, it was just a holding tank for customer they have that was moving. Decided to go back. Super happy I did, this time the staff were great, the owner especially so and his knowledge level of marine fish is not equalled in Edmonton. Bought a dragon goby that acclimated super fast and is very healthy. I will definitely go back to Aquarium Central next time I need a new fish. Great store, healthy stock and a knowledgeable owner....cant ask for more than that

Great place- really like these guys. Their fish are well kept, prices are fair, and I have never had an issue with any of the fish or plants I've purchased from them. You may need to be patient if the staff are busy with someone else, but once it is your turn they'll give you undivided attention and rock solid advice. They have a great selection and are quite discerning about their breeders. Probably the best thing is that they are very responsible fish keepers. The only regret I have is that I didn't buy my 90 gallon set up through them. I wish my money had gone to supporting local small business rather than a chain store.

I didn't know this aquarium store existed until right before we arrived! We were looking for a decent selection of freshwater shrimp that we couldn't find at other bigger aquarium stores in the city. The 2 staff members both greeted us as we walked in. The storefront is small but there is a backroom where the fish are and it is big!!! Their freshwater plants are the cheapest in the city that I have seen and they make sure the plants are not infested with snails. The employee that helped us was super friendly, funny and knowledgeable. We found exactly what we were looking for - and more. If you want to spend less, learn more and look at some cool fish..... this is the place.

Wide variety of aquatic plants that are growing in water already which has resulted in 0 loss for me. Their fish are incredibly active and healthy, you can tell they are well cared for. Staff and owner are so very helpful and willing to answer any question I had. Even left with printed directions on how to use the products to cycle a tank properly, and an email address in case I had any other questions or concerns. I 100% recommend this locally owned company, it will be my go to place from now on.

Each tank is filtered individually aka No Shared Sumps! Auto water changes to keep tanks super clean and healthy. Love this place. They stock the best quality products instead of lower quality that with fish we know will cost you big in the long run. If they don't have what you want they are more than willing to aquire it for you if they can. As always no matter how good or careful they are with incoming fish internal paracites or infections may not present themselves until much later so Always Quarantine New Fish no matter their source.

Horrible experience one of the staff members was horrendous I believe her name was Jude she was extremely racist towards me. The owner stated that customer are always wrong & that customer service means nothing and that he is always correct. He also has staff that are working in his establishment who he be littles behind there back stating that they don’t know what there talking about even though they are there working for him. He will make you spend money that’s uncessary and than later tell you that you didn’t need to spend that money. He also treats customers like there stupid instead of guiding them so that they can have a great fish setup. Stay away from this place.

Filthy tanks with far too many dead fish. It is now the second time that I've purchased fish from this shop and getting 1-2months before these fish kill off everything else in the tank and filling it with disease! Never had this issue from any other fish store. Twice in 5 years in completely different tank setups, this exact same thing happens after a month or two. Now half of the fish I've had in a well maintained tank for 2 years has all suddenly died within the short time they're in my tank!

This place has got a great selection of plants and freshwater fish and the employees are nice, helpful and very knowledgeable about the hobby. If you’re experienced and want to take your tanks to the next level this place is a must. But, if you’re starting out be wary. This is a really great store to stock your tank and get some professional advice beforehand, but if you’ve already got a tank set up and are having problems go somewhere else. One guy is not kind to beginners and likes to shame them. He is very dramatic over small things. You don’t need to scare people like that, or make beginners feel stupid for their mistakes when you could use it as an opportunity to educate. It really sucks the fun out of a great hobby.

The wide selection of stock at Aquarium Central always looks so healthy, and I love that they quarantine before letting them be sold. I always feel safe adding more stock to my current tanks, and never have to worry about diseases. Buying fish isn't like purchasing any product - it's adopting a pet. People get mad that Aquarium Central's main priority is the lives of their fish, and that the customer comes second to that. It sucks that they have 1 star reviews from people who are mad because the store wouldn't let them buy fish to put them in tiny cups.

This place is incredible! I just got into the hobby, and while I was in my research phase they were very happy to explain things to me in a way that I could understand that didn't talk down to me. I visited three times before purchasing anything, and each time they took their time to answer any questions. Their fish and plants are very happy and healthy, and the tanks are clean. They quarantine any new stock for a week to make sure they are healthy, and each tank is on their own system- meaning that if the tank gets sick, it doesn't spread the sick to other tanks. I highly recommend this place! I wish I could put more stars on this review.

Picked up a few African Cichlids a couple weeks ago. Great selection, excellent quality, and very reasonable pricing. I was really impressed with the quality and health of the fish. I will certainly return for that reason. One of the cichlids in a tank had been beat up pretty good - the staff immediately recognized this and quickly moved the fish to a more peaceful tank.

Went in to buy 6 cardinal Tetras and 3 Cory catfish. I asked the blonde girl for 6 cardinals and she gave me so much attitude and sounded like she hates her job. Then the city catfish, they looked healthy and lived. However the 6 cardinal tetras all had fin rot and no colours. I was looking around and their tanks were so dirty, full of algae, fish were stressed, sick, and poorly maintained. Just giving everyone a warning before you go here.

Salt water holding tanks were disgusting and several fish looked very sick, one poor yellow tang looked close to death. I used to shop here frequently when I lived closer and yesterday I decided to stop in as I was in the area, will not be back and don't recommend putting anything from their marine section in your tank.

We needed goldfish for our pond. After 5 places , looking for feeder fish, we gave up and went here. They have a huge selection of fish but priced like all other stores. It ended up being $42.00 for just 6 goldfish. I miss feeder goldfish but the attendant explained that due to diseases and other issues, they no longer carried feeder fish. The service was prompt, efficient and knowledgeable. They spoke to us upon entering and thanked us for the business. Definitely recommend.

This is an amazing shop for any planted aquarium enthusiast. I am currently setting up two new fully aquascaped tanks, and went to Aquarium Central on a friend's recommendation. It did not disappoint. The selection of plants, hardscape, supplies, and stocking options are excellent. The staff, for the most part, are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. The reason for not providing a five star review is one of the staff members is overly pushy and and bossy. He does not listen to what the customer is requesting. Insisting you purchase something you did not come in in for. Over the last two weeks I have made several shopping trips to Aquarium Central as I set up my two new tanks, and have witnessed and experienced this dismissive and rather rude staff member. This style of sales is very off putting. It is as if he assumes he knows better than the person he is talking too. The two other staff I have dealt with are more than helpful and a pleasure to interact with. That being said I will continue to support this store, but REFUSE to interact with one of the staff.

First visit to the store i was very happy. I live by west ed and drive all the way downtown which i hate. I went over to the flea market first due to i refuse to drive a block at a time and destroy the environment for less then a block trips. Also if you are getting fish and its +27 out i would not be so cruel to leave them in the car for any amount of time when you are not in it. Went to put my stuff inside the car and found this note. I was parked infront of the aquarium central and him and only the dog groomer were open on Saturday. So they left this note on my windshield and could not diplomatically word his letter or sign it. So i would thing twice about going again. Why when there selection is limited and the tanks are not the cleanest. And the selection is limited Big Als allows you alot more selection.

I was talked into buying an expensive "high end" light. And when it broke and I wrote an honest review the owner belittled me and kept going on and on about how his lights have to have a specific logo on them in order to be able to be sold in canada. So I ordered one from ali express to test his theory and he was completely lying. I got the chihiros led light for half the price he was offering, it has the CE logo that the owner kept going on and on about saying it wouldnt be legal to sell it if it didnt have this and this is why its so expensive (which I figured out was complete bull****). When I brought it back for a refund less than a week later thw owner wouldnt stop calling me rude, and all sorts of blatantly rude jargon. WHILE IN FRONT OF CUSTOMERS. I was embarrassed for the owner because everyone was looking at us, and me being in my 20s was more mature then the owner just asking over and over for a refund while repeating "I'm not here to get lectured I just want my money back". This is hands down the worst place to get fish supplies in edmonton. The store is incredibly messy all 6 times I have been there over 2 years. They WILL rip you off with products off of ali express. I used to like your store because you have an awesome selection of fish and plants and your fish seem to be very healthy, but the owner and how he treats people who support him is why I will NEVER return. Go to Big Als or Aquarium Illusions, they will treat you with respect and at least you know the brands of products you are buying. I bet the owners response is going to be great. Can't wait.

I've been coming here for years, and they've always had a great selection of livestock each time. The owner is more than welcoming about discussing fish you'd be interested in seeing in future stock of it wasn't currently available, in my experience. Definitely go here instead of big als, but don't hesitate to check both if one doesn't have what you're looking for. Plants are much more reasonable and usually more varied with Aquarium Central. Staff is always friendly and welcoming; usually having no issue if I want to be picky about a particular fish in a tank of 50 darting little things. ????

I got my first fishes there, and did not like the womans attitude, one gentleman was helping me and giving me info on the fish i was buying, and she would listen over our conversation and disagree with everything he was saying, i found her rude! She was wrong and he was right!!! I called another day, asking for bleeding heart tetras, the girl simply laughed at me and said " excuse me a what?" And i repeated myself and she giggled. I called petsmart and they knew right away what i was asking for. For a place that only sells fish, i was very disappointed, my friend recommended this place, but i don't think i will ever go back there because of that new girl they just hired. 2nd part since i cannot reply to the owner's reply... 1. she told me to buy 6 fish. I bought exactly 6 neon tetras and 4 black phantom tetras, i never said there was a problem with the fish to begin with, only a problem with your employees attitude. I listened, but it does not mean i liked her rudeness 2. I understand she may have not heard me, but you should train your employees to be more professional. And not be so rude. All she had to say is "sorry we don't carry them" 3. I bought the fishes, the friend you are speaking of did NOT buy any fish, she only bought food. So i really have no idea whats going on here. I WAS THE PAYING CUSTOMER!!! I bought exactly what your employee told me to buy. Yet she was a rude kid! 4. When i paid for my fish and food, she claimed that i had paid for both tins of food, i tried to tell her that i only paid for one. She argued with us that she had scanned both tins of food on one bill... she was wrong, my receipt only had one tin of food, so thank you for the free fish food! I love getting free products! The sad thing is i tried telling her she had scanned only one tin, but your employee was so rude to us that i decided to walk away with the free food, i won't argue with an idiot. 5. I actually was going to come in for your fresh live plants, but i will not, not after the sad reply you have given me. My only problem with your company was your employee, i was completely satisfied with the fish i bought from you guys. No problem with the products. 6. Your employee lied to you and did not tell you what really happened, instead of apologizing and trying to get to the root of the problem, you sided with your employee and now you look like an idiot. 7. Your right, your not a good fit for me, i like dealing with people that have common sense, and when a customer tells you they didn't pay for something, check their receipt, don't argue with the customer. Thank your employee for me for the free food. ☺???? 3rd reply Sir i am no thief, i still have my receipt. Please be more professional about this.

A great place to get little swimming things and such. Some excellent leafy things too...and if you like snails, well there you go. A bit squishy if you are really large, but otherwise a nice place to go to get surrounded by water without getting wet.

Customer service is not good, in fact it's one of the worst I have ever encountered in any retail store. Been back three times now and each time the main guy chirps something condescending at me, their fish room is one of dirtiest in the city and the selection of hardware is pretty much a joke. So many better options in this city for the aquarium hobbyist, this is the absolute last place I would go for anything. Read the owner responses to negative reviews and you will see for yourself the attitude, I wasn't sure so I had to see for myself. Pretty much spot on what I experienced. But hey they got some nice wood and rock, if that's any consolation.

Tuan is the most knowledgeable LFS owner that you'll find. They don't have a huge selection of equipment but everything they carry is top notch stuff. And their fish are always healthy. I will only buy my fish from Aquarium Central going forward.

I just wanted to say what a good job they are doing at Aquarium Central on 111th in Edmonton. Tammy helped me select the appropriate food for my Koi and when I went to pay for it, she asked if I was aware of the "refill program" (which I was not), but then informed me of it for a 25% on food. Once she coached me on the appropriate size and kind of food to buy, I wound up spending about half as much as I thought I would. Thanks Tammy! I would have never known, had she not mentioned it.

Staff is friendly enough but for God's sake clean your store its disgusting, the tanks are dirty, the saltwater section doesn't look to have ever been cleaned.

If you have planted tanks dont go anywhere else. This store is amazing! The plants are cheaper then anywhere else in the city which is why i buy there and there stock is great. Hope to be a customer for life
