My experience with GCG was not very good. It started out ok, we'd never used a Financial Advisor before, but felt like it could be a good thing so at the advice of a friend we gave Jonathan Malone at GCG a try.
After a little over a year it just didn't seem like a good fit. We were paying them 1% for the right to have most of our money managed by SEI (another financial manager) and then paying SEI and additoinal 0.25%.
We asked to move our money out and got a lot of half thought through arguments about how we shouldn't judge them based on the limited time we'd been using them, etc... I have a strong numbers background and requested data and numbers and I got a lot of nice words and negativity. In effect it reinforced my decision.
On top of that he strongly pushed us into a Life Insurance policy that I remain skeptical about but am locked into for the rest of my life. When I tried to ask questions about the process he went through to push us towards this particular policy (granted this was after the policy had been in place for a little over a year so I knew I was more or less stuck and after I'd pulled most of our money out of GCG) I was met with silence, no real answers and ultimately accused of housing animosity towards my advisor that he didn't understand. I was simply trying to get information on why this particular policy. In the end I got zero answers and was told that my account would be better managed by the home office. I asked what that meant assuming it meant the life insurance company for this policy. That was apparently not the case as he remains listed on my policy account.
Today I moved the remainder of my money out of GCG. I spent 3 weeks trying to email Mr. Malone and finally after a text message exchange where he first informed me he didn't have my number he let me know that my emails had gone to his spam. At this point I expected him to handle this final transaction but instead was told I needed to call a 1800 number as my account was no longer managed by him. So apparently that's what he meant by transferring me to the "home office". I would not recommend Mr Malone to anyone. He is a nice person, but in my opinion not a very good financial advisor. He will try to push you into a lot of insurance policies that I felt like he was getting major kickbacks on (he was very pushy with these). Additionally I don't recall a single bit of investment advice he provided which is what I really wanted. I can't speak to anyone else at GCG so maybe other managers there are better, but considering he's a partner and VP I have my doubts.
