We went to see Anne & Gilbert, and it was great. The cast did an amazing job with limited resources and all were very fine actors. The trio of live musicians provided flawless accompaniment. The musical itself was hilarious and moving. A lifelong L.M. Montgomery fan, I teared up several times.
However, upon walking into the "theatre," I was very disappointed. It is tiny and the stage is just the open floor in front of the seats. The seats themselves are just padded metal banquet chairs screwed to the floor. The "best" seats had an inch or so between them, but the others were set right next to each other. Thankfully we were in the top row and the rest of our row was empty, but in a full theatre, we would have been hip to shoulder against any neighbors. Not recommended for any visitors of size.
Although the stadium seating makes for a decent view (no looking around the heads of people in front of you), there are no railings and some of the older audience members complained about the steepness of the stairs. The "stage" itself is so shallow, the actors had to exit single file anytime they went off stage and any audience members who exit during the show aren't allowed back in until intermission because you essentially have to cross the stage to leave. The entrance to the theater is also used as a stage exit and is built into the scenery. So you can't leave that way during the performance you have to use the other exit on the opposite side.
There is a bar in the basement next to an art gallery space, which was nice, and the bathrooms were spacious and modern.
This venue is probably much better suited to concerts, where sets won't take up so much of the stage and where seeing everything doesn't matter as much. But for as much as the musical is promoted by tourism, and for the size of Charlottetown, it was very disappointing to be presented with such an amateur space, instead of a real theatre with decent seating and an ample, elevated stage. Particularly when a state of the art convention center exists just down the street.
So, not a terrible experience by any means, but not nearly as nice as it could have been. I hope that they can get a better, less cramped location sometime in the future that will better showcase the musical.
