Warning and FYI
Warning
My son and daughter in-law got married August 18, 2018. They had an outdoor wedding for 220 people at a sleep away camp approximately one hour outside of Halifax. We contacted MacFarlands for all the rentals. This included tent, tables, chairs, linens, dishes, glasses, barbecue, and cutlery. The delivery time on my contract said 8am Friday and pickup was 5pm on Sunday. When I made my final payment a few days before the wedding I was told the rentals would be there by 10am. Friday morning I called to confirm and was told it would be closer to noon. The rentals finally arrived at 3:30pm with two delivery men to set up a 3200sq ft tent. The tent was finally finished and the rest of the truck unloaded at 6:30pm. We couldn’t have our rehearsal, the rehearsal dinner had to be moved to the dining hall, and no decorating could be done at all that night. Therefore at 8 am on the day of the wedding the entire bridal and groom parties as well as any friends and family available had to set up for the wedding, in the rain, after it was beautiful the day before. Then on Sunday they arrived at noon, five hours early and we had to wake people to dismantle the event. The delivery personnel were rude, drove a huge box truck onto the lawn causing damage, and carelessly smashed around the glass and dish ware, even leaving behind the linens. I returned the linens my self and explained the situation to one of the employees. I was told the manager would be in touch within 24 hours. After no response I called back 5 days later and was told to make an appointment via email. I went in and spoke to the manager, who seemed sympathetic and said he would contact me the next morning, as he wanted to give our situation it’s deserved thought and consideration. THIRTY minutes after I left his office he had someone else call and offer me 10% of the rental fee of the tent only. I said that was unacceptable and I would be in the next day. I assumed if I wanted the rentals for 3 days but only paid for 1.5 they wouldn’t have been delivered, so if I paid for 3 and got 1.5 they should reimburse a substantial percentage of the fee. The following morning they reimbursed my credit card without my permission and I was told it was fair and I should be happy to have that.
Had it not been for many family and friends this entire event would have been compromised. As it was the bride and groom who had very carefully planned the entire day had to change much of the planning, including seeing each other the morning of the wedding. MacFarlands completely compromised the integrity of the event. Their response to my concerns and complaint was a very smug oh well, we know we screwed up but too bad and here’s a little something to make you go away.
FYI- I was told only after the event, at no point was any of this told to me or does it appear in the contract.
1) delivery times on the contract are just the opening time for their business and could be anytime during the day
2) Pick up times are at their discretion
3) If we want a specific delivery time there would be an added fee
4) The 3 day rental was completed as far as they were concerned, even though we had no access to the rentals until after 6:30pm on Friday night.
