We got married in Playa Del Carmen in August of 2018. I’m glad that I can make an honest review about My Wedding Away finally some 3 years later on google review, because I have been wanting to speak my mind about this for some time (clearly).
For the couples/bride looking to do a destination wedding, BEWARE of My Wedding Away! As the others have stated in the reviews, you’re better off planning your destination wedding yourself or finding another reputable destination wedding planner. Heck, even head to your nearest Sunwing, I’m sure they’ll do a much better job booking your large group of guests and at a much better rate.
My husband and I met Karen and Cherie at the bridal expo in 2017. We decided to have a consultation with Karen over the phone and reached out via email. We got a response back from Cherie that Karen was out of office and she had met her quota of couples for the year (something I wish we had been told when we met them in person). We agreed to do the consult with Cherie over phone.
The next several months were met with a lack of professionalism on Cherie’s part. To name a few:
- waiting days to weeks on end without an email response to questions/concerns
- not responding to our phone calls
- there was no help to budget like they state on their website?
- guests having a hard time reaching Cherie to book flights, only to book with other agencies because of her delay in response
- misspelling of MY name (all documents received by the resort wedding planner had to be changed upon arrival at the hotel) as well as other guests
- incorrect use of Mr. and Mrs. for female and male guests
- the planning part (which is what they rave about on their website) was little to nonexistent. She sent me a document that I needed to fill out and had to contact the vendors from the resort myself
- lots of back and forth emails between me/Cherie/resort wedding planner, it became this one long rabbit hole thread of emails
- no checking up on us when we arrived to the hotel or when we got home (just an automated email from TPI) probably knew how upset we were about the whole process
- telling us the reason for delay was because she worked from home with kids... unprofessional in the sense that you shouldn’t be giving your clients any sort of excuse
Overall, find another destination planner. My husband and I were so embarrassed by this companies lack of professionalism and apologized to our guests.
Like I said, you’re probably better off getting cheaper group rates with a Sunwing or reputable travel agency. And if you do know the location of where you’d like to get married (like in my case), do a quick search of wedding planners in the area. They will know a lot more and have access to vendors in the area. Wish I could go back and take my own advice!
One last thing, I always wondered where these positive testimonies and reviews left in “quotes” on their website came from. Did they write these themselves? My experience with My Wedding Away was far from that.
