Noel has been instrumental in rehabilitating our rescue dog who was aggressive towards people. We are so thankful for his continued help, and he deserves a long review! Noel is personable, funny, and patient. With his lessons, our Great Pyrenees x St. Bernard has improved immensely. Noel is a supportive, scientifically based, true behaviour specialist. From energetic puppies to older dogs with behavioural challenges, Noel provides steady leadership that focuses on educating dog owners. He teaches you to provide corrections, but he focuses heavily on praising, loving (through MANY treats, play, and cuddles), and making your dog feel safe with you. With his teachings, I can confidently handle my dog who is much bigger and stronger than I am. Below are just a few reasons why you should always choose Noel Pepin and co. for your training needs:
- Compassion and balance: Noel is a firm believer in establishing love and play between owner and dog. For every unwanted behaviour that you correct, Noel encourages you to celebrate and reward your dog every time they do something positive, no matter how small the action. Even during training sessions, Noel has you stop every few minutes to play with and cuddle your dog. I cannot stress enough how many treats, toys, and cuddles my dog gets in Noel’s lessons. Noel teaches you when to give corrections for unwanted behaviours. Corrections are appropriate to the level of problem behaviour, and can be something as simple as lightly jingling your dog’s leash (annoying it) until it pays attention to you, then immediately giving it a treat. Noel is a firm believer in rewarding your dog immediately and frequently. By telling your dog when it is doing something unwanted, then making huge celebrations when it is doing something desired, your dog will learn so much!
- Knowledge/experience. A large breed, human-aggressive rescue dog is a very serious matter. I knew that I had to choose a very experienced and knowledgeable trainer. As someone who works in the field of behaviour analysis, it was incredibly important to me to find someone who applied the fundamental, SCIENTIFICALLY supported principles of learning and behaviour change. Although many dog trainers said they trained dogs solely through “positive reinforcement,” I found that their application of certain principles were inappropriately applied and misunderstood. Noel is truly educated in the principles of learning, which is why he is a true behaviour specialist. His hands on experience with dogs of all types and his education in behaviour principles are prevalent.
- Support/encouragement: Noel is always available for questions through text, email, or calling. I have often texted him questions regarding my dog’s behaviour, and his response has always been timely. He provides clear instructions, and empowers you by teaching you the skills to confidently handle difficult situations with your dog when he is not around.
- Honesty: Noel is honest with you and your expectations. He is not there to immediately “fix” your dog. When he assessed our dog shortly after we adopted her, he told us she was going to be a lot of work and not to expect a quick fix. He really impressed upon us the level of daily training we needed to do in order to see positive behaviour change. Noel teaches you skills that are tailored to your dog’s needs. He is always honest about our progress – Noel will tell you if you need to practice something more, etc.
