I looked for an emergency dentist in Whitehorse when a years-old filling fell out, and the gap in the molar started to hurt and bleed. I had to leave the city in a couple of days, so I hoped it could get fixed before my departure. I walked into Murraya and was told they could see me and fix the problem that day. I thought it was my lucky day.
After a preliminary examination, two X-rays, and Dr. John Stern pressuring me into getting a full mouth X-ray as well (for another potential procedure unrelated to the bleeding molar, so I refused), he told me the problem was not urgent enough, that he didn't have time for me that day, and that one of the secretaries would schedule a later appointment. They told me the earliest he could see me was weeks later and shooed me out the door. And BAM, Murraya just made close to 200$ for a useless examination. Other clinics in town, by the way, charge 65$ for exam + X-ray and are much more competent and friendly.
The following day, I called Murraya, in pain, inquiring if they had any cancellations, as my bleeding filling-less cavity was hurting and I couldn't do much. They put Dr. Stern on the phone, who told me: "I am looking at your X-ray right now, and I don't think you should be in any pain. I don't think this is urgent." After insisting, he grudgingly agreed to do the filling that day.
I went in, and Dr. Stern rushed through the whole filling procedure. He didn't seem to care, was distracted, and simultaneously working on other patients, doing my filling during idle time. At the end, he tried to sell me a more complicated and expensive procedure that I would need to have done on some other teeth another time. I quote: "Well, there's no rush. If you get a better job and have insurance, come see me and we'll take care of that."
For not more than 30 minutes of his time for an exam and filling, I ended up being charged $420. Soon afterwards, the filling Dr. Stern did began to crack, and I am now pretty much back where I started, with a sore tooth where food gets painfully stuck in the crack and I can't chew most of the time - a very poorly executed filling.
