UVic does not believe that the immunocompromised/ Chronically ill/ disabled are worthy of an education. I have had to put my degree on hold because they refuse to let me work safely online, telling me that I must come to in person classes even if every doctor in the world tells me that I should not attend because I am clinically extremely vlaunerable to catching covid and dying. It snowed really Hard which were 11 and 12 Feb of 2019, thank goodness campus was closed on 12 which was yesterday. But but but, how come the emergency department didn’t realize that even though it is not snowing that hard today, the previous days of snow made it really Difficult to Walk/Drive/Bicycle/Bus to commute to school!!! It’s beautiful natural view but the experience to commute to school sucks! Especially when it took me 45 mins to walk to school which was 25 mins walk normally, buses even stopped! I won’t expect to have another campus closed day tmr, but UVic pls care about your students and staff who has to travel all the way to school!! Appreciate it!!!

Let's start with the PROs: The campus is beautiful, the professors are great, there are uncountable learning opportunities and resources, and everyone is friendly. Speaking from the academic perspective, this is a great university for study and work. Now the CONs... UVic is full of money-grabbing policies and establishments. -> CARSA - biggest money grab, you have to pay (can't opt. out) for regular membership, but it costs additional $$ to use weights or climbing wall or to reserve equipment or space ahead of time. -> The parking is really amazing (not!), even if you pay yearly - you can't find a parking spot when you arrive and have to hunt for one for up-to 30 minutes (sometimes longer), and they can't even remind you to renew your annual pass and then ding you $30-$60 for forgetting. ->The food is not that great, considering how expensive it is, like $4.50 for a slice of pizza. Most food outlets close at 2:30 (right after lunch) - what about those students who study till 9pm?? Good luck getting any food on campus during exam week, except from a couple of places. The food shops on campus are there to make money - not to feed you. -> The Student Financial Aid services will help you prepare a document but will NOT fax it to Canada Student Loans for you - you have to pay out of pocket and go across campus to do this yourself. -> On weekends and holidays and daily after 5pm most buildings turn off the heat in the winter, so poor students have to suffer the cold. These are not healthy working conditions. They say the University is "closed", but people still work (including some professors) - so why not provide some heat? These are just a few small examples, I'm not even talking tuition fees, especially for international students!! Poor international students - my friend was living on campus (dorm) and the school shuts down during the last week of December, so they forced him to move out during that week!!! Where are you gonna live for a week if you're international student??? (answer: not on campus). This place is seriously ridiculous, and no one is doing anything about it, and it's getting worse and worse each year. The campus is beautiful and professors are great, that's why two stars. Everything else is highly questionable.

The University of Victoria is overall, generally speaking, a good university, however their private security service has been notoriously known to, at times, be tyrannical with their policies, in that they’re slightly unreasonable, and I am certainly not the only one with those thoughts, sentiments, and beliefs (I will not disclose other parties who share similar beliefs). Multiple individuals have been unreasonably banned from their properties and there is no patience or consideration when it comes to helping people, that they impose their bans on. Their director, Tom Downie, has made multiple decisions which has made my life on campus very difficult and I often live in fear and anxiety when I visit UVic due to the hostile and imposing nature of the decisions that he has made on behalf of the security service. UVic campus security services effectively only care about telling people they don’t like to get off their “private property” even though UVic is a public university and their property is commercial property, not residential property. As a former student, I’ve encountered a lot of issues with them, despite only having a temper tantrum (my problem) due to a maladaptive episode of me having poor mental health, which should really have been met with compassion and reacted to appropriately, especially since I’ve already admitted multiple times that I had been in the wrong, acted in error, and made a mistake, but regardless there is no leeway and there is no definite timeline for when I am welcome to return to UVic campus. I have been therefore put into a legal situation where I’ve been spending over a year of my time enmeshed and entrenched with trying to fix and improve my situation and I have lost out on a lot of opportunities and many costs have been associated with their decisions which I must follow, by law, or risk being imprisoned, having a criminal record, or both.

I had a great time doing my undergrad here! The university has plenty of outstanding programs in the hard sciences with countless professors who are true leaders in their field. I have plenty of good things to say about the microbiology and biochemistry departments in particular. To any person wishing to make a contribution to this world or wanting to tackle society's toughest problems, I recommend you stay clear of any programs that are corrupted by postmodernist drivel or have any mention of trigger warnings in their syllabi. However, if you do wish to be a champion of pseudoscientific theories or contribute to the erosion of intellectual diversity, you can always squander your potential and enroll in something useless like the Gender Studies program :)

The time I was there, I had a lot of fun. People are super friendly and classes were entertaining. However, after attending a bigger school, i have realized that uvic is more socially focused rather than academia focused. Overall, my experience at Uvic was exceptional. I went through all of the coursework with virtually the same cohort, which helped to develop a high level of camaraderie and teamwork. I was able to solely focus on my studies, knowing that my schedule was being managed effectively by the front office staff. The instructors were current leaders in their respective fields and were passionate about what they were teaching. The only area in which I took issue with, was transferable credits. I arrived at Uvic with an AA degree from Okanagan college, but still had to take a couple of the classes that someone entering from another Post-Secondary Institution might not have had to. In other words, even though Uvic accepted my transcripts, they really didn't amount to what I expected in regards to being a full transfer student, or negate the need to take particular courses. This may have been a misunderstanding on my part. However, I did find value in all of the classes that I took. Although I didn't stick to a career in business, I have had a successful tenure in public education, and credit Uvic for accelerating that career.

Re their "Indigenous Law Program" - I honestly do not understand how they can offer "Indigenous Law" education that is in ENGLISH and not in the actual language of the Indigenous people who are going there to study "Indigenous Law". When Willie Seymour was alive, they were not interested in hiring him to teach LAW and SPEAKING... now that he is dead -- they are running this program. I have offer Camosun College my skills, abilities and knowledge to assist *them* in building their Indigenous Law Library. My contributions will be in Hul'qumi'num, since it's a language I have been studying and learning for 20 years. I have little interest in doing that kind of work for UVic, since they were so rude to Willie (Kwultustun and/or Suhilton) Further Affiant Sayeth Not.

UVic is one of the most beautiful campuses in all of North America. Also, as a grad from both UBC and UVic, I can say hands-down that the experience at UVic is much better. It is most absolutely a perfectly sized university. Its big enough that it has a wide range of programs and professors whose research is recognized world-wide, and small enough that you can feel like a human being, learning within an academic community. Also - remember, universities don't 'produce you' - you have to read and engage - UVic is the perfect place to do that, and to have an amazing West Coast experience at the same time.

Very organized setup for getting covid-19 shots, was kept at safe distances all the precautions setup, couple people always making it hard for everyone else, but the staff with quickly and courteously there to step in and keep people in good standing. I have never attended this university. So I cannot comment on the educational aspects. This review is based on the cleanliness, order and layout of the campus all of which are extremely poor. I always see staff out on the campus cleaning and yet there is garbage everywhere - lots of disposable plastic and styrofoam food containers. The students seem to behave irresponsibly by buying all this trash and then don't even have the wherewithal to dispose of it properly. Much of the green space is poorly managed with invasive species growing unfettered. If there are signs saying your dog must be on a leash in a particular area you will see 20 dogs running about. The campus layout is stupid with the stupid ring road encircling the campus making it impossible to walk or cycle in peace. No bike lanes.

It's a solid school and I have had a good experience in going here. However they actively cover up student suicides, especially in residence, while refusing to fund necessary mental health resources or cover them under the student health insurance plan. Counselling wait times are four months- too long for someone in crisis.

I hired an ESL speaker who completed a bachelor's degree at the University of Victoria. I would have thought that after four years at university someone would know the difference between singular and plural. However, this employee continues to make mistakes that cost us money. For example, instead of telling a client we were available for one-hour sessions, he told a client we were available for an hour session. He makes many other grammatical errors. The employee told me that professors at U Vic had too many papers to grade, so the professors don't correct grammar as long as they understand the intended meaning. As an employer, I expect people to graduate with halfway decent English.

Very pretty campus with lots of green space and walking areas, mediocre food for the price, gym is fine but expensive if you want more then the base available, profs are hit and miss. Some are outstanding, others shouldn't be teaching and self admit they don't like it. Overall, it's an okay school that did it's job. But I've had better post-secondary experiences and usefulness elsewhere.

I really wish I could give this University a 5/5 review as I thought this was my dream univeristy ever since a young child. However I just completed my second year at Uvic and to be completely honest, it has been the worst two years of my life. The only reason as to why I dislike this University is because of the administration. By that I mean, it seems as if they do not care about their students, and that they treat their students just like numbers. For most of my time in class it almost seems as if they want students fail on purpose. I believe it's a serious problem if for example is one course, over 65% of the students fail shouldn't the admin be looking at the profs rubic and assist students in a better way of passing. I mean, yes there aee some students who do not try hard has others but the ones who do, like myself and my peers - we should be able to have proper tools and guidance for passing this course because at the end of the day it's the students who lose money not the University. Moreover I believe most of the profs specially in the math and economics faculty seem to have no clue what there doing but the ones who do are rarely teaching unfortunately. They are very old school in their teaching and I would highly recommend not attending this school, specially if you are international because to them you are just money grab. They will increase tuition up to 20 percent this upcoming fall semester. Other than that the campus is beautiful but the food is way to over priced!

I earned my Master’s in Global Business from UVic and it’s a great university to study and be at. From campus to professors, all resources are top notch. When you apply for a job there, though, you will feel disappointed. If you don’t make it to the interview round, they wouldn’t even bother responding. Even an automated email would suffice but at least let the candidate know that they didn’t make it to the next round. I applied for multiple positions there over the years and never heard back. If they’re not even considering UVic grads for a position, doesn’t that say something about their confidence in the education they are providing.
