This has nothing to do with the care.. The care has been amazing for us ... And the numerous times we've been there. This is about the fact that twice Ive walked through the front door and have been bombarded with cigarette smoke.. Right from the parking lot, to the front door. I do not want to go to a public place to recieve medical attention only to recieve second hand smoke at the same time. You do what you want.. But I dont want to be involved. Smoking is damaging to everyone.. We all know this. Why is this not being delt with? Why are people allowed to smoke anywhere near the doors?

My husband received the best care today, staff were compassionate, attentive and informative. Thank you.

Many people complain about NRGH. Try going to a hospital in the US. I had good insurance. Ambulance cost $500. ER costs $400. But lucky you - if you have to stay, they'll apply that to your first night which could be $1000. MRI is $1000. They charge for nurse's care. Need an IV? Kaching for the med and kaching for the nurse to put it in. I had a broken hand and rib and waited about 3 hours in chairs. Then, into a smaller room with other people waiting for xrays. A brace on my hand for $100 and then drove myself home as a cab would've been another $50. So ya, I love the medical system here. And don't think that I didn't wait months sor specialists, because I sure did.

In here and then out of here. You come to this place because it's the last result. My condition causes me to make sudden visits.Every time I'm treated nicely in the most professional way. With each other's sense of humour the visit is usually short and sweet. Thanks everyone.

I’ve never been to a better hospital. I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time in several different units of the hospital this past summer as a family member was gravely ill. Almost every staff member we came into contact with was wonderful - even the nurses in training! I was very impressed and felt comfortable having my loved one in their care. I cannot thank them enough for all of their hard work and compassion.

On April 18th I had an unexpected stay for four nights in NRGH while visiting family in Cedar. My grandson and I were playing on some playground equipment in Matteo Sutton Park when I missed a pole and crashed to the pea gravel fracturing my pelvis in four places. The staff at the hospital were all fantastic. Words like cheerful, helpful and encouraging don't adequately describe the quality of care I received. They even laughed at all the right places when I described how I got there. Everybody loves to complain about hospital food but I wouldn't be one of them after my visit. I hope I never have to be a hospital patient again but if I do, I hope it is in NRGH. Thanks to everybody!

Last Saturday I had come across on the ferry to Nanaimo. We stopped at a store and didn't see a step and fell. I knew my wrist was broken. I drove to the hospital which was 5 minutes away thankfully. We arrived at midnight. By 12:30 they had given me painkillers and x-rays. By 1am they were putting the cast on. By 1:30 the had injected more painkillers and a tetanus shot for my badly scraped knee. I promised I wouldn't drive, my husband was driving our RV so we slept in it there in the hospital parking lot. I have been in my fair share of hospitals from Montreal to BC and the US this was by far the best hospital experience I ever had. I was in pain. I had never been there before and they took amazing care of me. I amso thankful to the ER staff on the night of Aug 14th. You are amazing at what you do Thank you for hoping this wounded traveller'❤

I was a patient at the short stay surgical ward January 21-22 for hip replacement. I would like to offer my highest praise to the nursing staff that took such great care of me. Not a stranger to hospitals in various locales I can state without reservation that these three nurses were exceptional and clearly a step above any level of care previously experienced. VIHA and the citizens served by this hospital are fortunate to have such individuals on staff.

Went to NRGH on January 22 2022. Wore my mask into the building . Exchanged my mask for a new one without arguing . Sat patiently until called to the desk . Answered their questions carefully without speaking over them . Showed them my CareCard when asked . Went into the orange section and waited patiently again . Got in to see the doctor after a ( fairly long ) reasonable wait . Asked and answered questions carefully . Thanked the doctor and left . This is how you ( almost guarantee ) a good result when you visit the Emerg . Someone else arrived after me . Asked a question and was asked for her Vaccine Record . ( not vaccinated ) . Immediately started raising her voice and being rude to the attendant . The attendant kept trying to help this person and they kept getting louder and ruder . They finally stomped away out the door . Which if these people is you ? Everyone I dealt with was polite , professional and well-prepared . I had a great visit !

This is a horrible nightmare, I hate this place I’m sitting here for 2 hours to get stiches and I’m still waiting they won’t let me know the wait time. I hate this planet.

Avoid this hospital if you can. I had a videophone appt. in the Specialty Care clinic and arrived, as told, 20 minutes early. No one was at the desk, so I called Hello is anyone here? A big white girl with blondish curly hair and glasses comes out, looks at me and I say, 'I have an appt. I was supposed to sign in for 5 minutes ago.' She was SO SNARKY saying to me with a flippity I-Am-So-Much-Better-Than-You attitude says, "what's it for??" I said videophone, and she pretended not to know what that was. It is LITERALLY a Video Phone, no other way to describe it, as I have been coming here for more than once. So then after me trying to explain it in even more layman's terms, she says 'Oh Telehealth. Come in.' This girl, every time I go, is SO RUDE. Like role playing like us patients are inconveniencing her so as to not do her job. Major attitude beyond what any receptionist anywhere, especially in a hospital, should have toward patients. Last time I came for a videophone appt., there were 3 receptionists and not a single one acknowledged me standing at the check in window, even though they were only 2ft away. Again, MAJOR attitude when I spoke. So you are either treated like absolute sh** by that one girl, or the entire office staff ignores you. Way to go, Nanaimo. This is the second time I was disrespected as a patient there, the first being in the ICU where the manager could not figure out who her staff were on the day I was admitted and could not even tell me what care aide was attending me, even though the care aide absolutely humiliated me. How do you not know which staff are attending your patients? Seriously poor on every level. Then the manager just played dumb and stopped returning my calls so I sent it all off to the College of Nurses and the lovely woman there is actually implementing the awful treatment I had into new nurse study programs so no one else ends up treated like this. All in all, Avoid this hospital if you can.

The nurses that work here deserve a pat on the back. It takes a very special person to do what you do. Thank you.

Daryl Brundritt

They dont knock, and always disturb while your sleeping even with a sign on the door. And they have never cleaned our room in the week we've been here.

Kim Windancer

Serious lack of communication... And I felt rushed out the door.. I wrote a note to thank the person who dropped off my personal effects and I was told that it was delivered. However, it wasn't. They never received it. Some of the Nurses started to treat me differently, especially one she was cold & I heard her saying she would not tend to me (even though it was her job) I wasn't even allowed to get up and walk around even though I was in bed for 5 days. The note said something to the effect Thanks for your help and kindness. The nurses here aren't as compassionate as you are to your patients. I wish I was able to be a patient there instead of here, I truly believe that the note was Intercepted and tossed as their demeanour changed so much the next day. I felt like I was in high school again.. ????

Anita Hoffman

RAVE to NRGH perinatal unit. Spent 3.5 days there over Easter weekend after a C Section. Everyone was very friendly, helpful, and over all wonderful!

jesse davis

Pretty rude all n all couldn't believe it but thankful for them being there

Don Mackay

Nursing staff are exceptional.

Jessica Chapman

Just awful. There are so many reason why this hospitals name is NO ROOM GO HOME. You only take up room here and they try to rush you out, misdiagnose you, ignore you. Serious lack of care and communication at this hospital. There are people here that depend on this hospital and it is truly sad.

I was visiting a patient on GO25 today. April 2 2017. I went down to the Nursing Station to ask a question regarding Television rental. There was no one in the nursing station but there were two people standing just outside of it conversing. Unless the name tags are visible which they weren't there is no way to tell who these people are as they are both dressed as civilians. I interupted their conversation and was given a severe dressing down by the one who turned out to be the Nurse who was talking to a patient (she said and was also in the act of answering a bell) Why don't Nurses wear Uniforms anymore? are they not proud of their profession?. I was very much taken aback by this.

Koston Morin

The ER is SEVERELY under staffed. I've waited upwards of 4 hours once for a checkup on an injury I had this summer, just to be sent home 5 minutes after I saw the doctor. But, once I get in, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Just crazy how long I have to wait.

Clare Neufeld

I have been ordered to an MRI, on a specific date, time, and specific PARKING instructions (in a mix of ALL BOLD & some BLOCK letters (as follows): “If your exam is booked between [they specify times], park in the EMERGENCY PARKING LOT B, ENTER VIA THE EMERGENCY ENTRANCE.” The paper map provided with the letter, is called, “NRGH Parking Map & Directions to Medical Imaging”. On the map a box with an arrow has these words: “Park here for MRI appointments between [the specified times]”. The problem is that there appears to be no way to drive from the address, which Google Maps produces, in a search for “Nanaimo Regional General Hospital Emergency Parking Lot B”, (restricted to the generic 1200 Dufferin Cresc., Nanaimo, BC), entrance, to the specified “Parking Lot B” - neither via Google Maps (which OUGHT TO have ALL HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ENTRANCE GUIDANCE entered into ALL driving instructions), NOR the paper map provided by NRGH!! HELPLESSNESS is ENHANCED, HELPFULNESS is set aside as unnecessary - I can only presume that the presumption of the information gurus is that “EVERYONE KNOWS HOW TO GET TO OUR EMERGENCY”! Sorry to disavow: “NOT SO - FOLKS!!” A little INADEQUATE information is NO MORE useful than NONE of the REQUIRED information - sincerely. See attached photo

Alanah Milne

Horrible ER intake staff, told them what I preferred and they refused to use that information. As well as taking it upon themselves to change personal information on my health profile. The only decent staff in the ER were the nurses and doctors.

People there don’t care and will do almost anything to try to get you to go to clinics instead even if you tell them repeatedly that you already have gone to the clinics

Norry Kaler

Wife had surgery today and nothing but glowing reviews from the nursing staff and the doctors. Dr Don Wilson was phenomenal. Thank you for giving us some hope in a difficult time. This was the exact opposite of the VGH hospital which was a horrible experience in January.

Imaging and x-rays are amazing! In general all staff are really nice. Some are more helpful than others. Emergency; depends on you luck but in general anywhere from 1-4 hours. And the quality of the doctor depends on your luck too. Nurses are all super nice. Covid-19 procedures are ok. But still feels like so many people no social distancing. This should the norm even without COVID-19!

Bruce Frey

Last week i had a CT Scan and a bone scan. The staff were excellent and helped me with my claustrophobia. They were very friendly and professional. Also on time with both appointments. I had four needles and for the first time, no bruising. Thanks to all the staff. Bruce Frey

(Translated) So far your attention has been good, the staff very polite and attentive. I hope that blessings for everyone continue. (Original) Hasta el momento su atención a sido buena, el personal muy educado y atento espero que siga así bendiciones para todos.

Ofelia Gersjes

Once you get inside, the staff are absolutely amazing. Friendly. Clean. Smart. So incredibly wonderful. But What I really dislike, and have tried to make a formal complaint about, is having to walk through a cloud of cigarette smoke every. Single. Time. I have unfortunately been to the hospital a lot and there is so many ciggarette butts by the front door. Day or night, people are smoking outside the door. Its just awful when you are coming in and out with a baby. There are SO many no smoking signs all over the front court yard, but so many people still smoke here. I hope it is something to he worked on because everything else about NRGH Peds is so wonderful. Good coffee shop, great doctors. I can't praise it enough but the main entrance needs some TLC.

Mr. Andersson

Thank you Dr DeLaney and a special thank you to Brigette.

RG whatup

Clean and nice place. The emergency entrance is something to be admired. The Staff are kind and fine.

Alan Christensen

I'm at medical daycare every 2 weeks. The nurses are very polite and skilled. Over the years Nanaimo has grown and it's put a lot of pressure on the hospital staff and management. However it's still one of the best regional hospitals on the island in my opinion.

moya xoxo

There is zero covid protocol. The people answering the phones are clueless. I’m grateful to the medical staff helping me. They were kind. Even though it took 10 hours of me suffering in a chair just to get fluids injected. But there was literally trails of vomit through out the hospital . It was actually disturbingly filthy there. And if you don’t have covid and are there you will then have it because the person next to you not social distancing vomiting in a baggy has covid. There was elderly people walkin around the covid encrusted hospital. Disturbing really.

Wife taken in for urgent surgery. Day staff from reception downstairs to day care waiting area, preop, contacting surgeon, OR staff--all excellent. Consideration for two rather slow elderly individuals confused by hospital procedures--exemplary especially in this COVID-stressed time.

Veronika Murray

Alyssa Medwid

The most unfriendly, unkind and laziest nursing staff. Care aids and nurses were dressed very unprofessionally and gossiping in the halls while the patients listened from their rooms. I guess there is a reason this place has such a terrible reputation.

David Git

One of the best hospital I have been so far very friendly staff

Monir Shahzeidi

This was my second time here and both time I took a very nice care. They explain everything very well and kindly answer your question. Staffs are very polite and welcoming. I was waiting to be called for about an hour and there is a lovely cafeteria if you need coffee or snacks.

Takuya IRYO

Heather Stone

The dirtiest and nastiest hospital i have ever been in also no compassion for the patients at all .

James Browne

Despite the shortcomings of being a naturally dirty environment with the number of people served daily I was as well cared for as could be expected. Emergency was typical people thinking emerg doubles as a walk in, cranky drunks and a few random patients. You cant expect instant service after 4 hours I finally saw a nurse. But the one Dr. on shift was run ragged before RCMP bringing patients and scared parents with toddlers pushing triage list back over and again. The staff work hard to care for everyone.

On Monday April 10, 2017 at about 11:00 AM visiting from Kelowna, B.C I was waiting to be severed in the cafeteria and I was standing there for about 10 minutes or so, as there was only one young lady at the cash register helping people. I choose to leave after ten minutes and maybe come back later. About a hour later that young lady had come over to where I was and tapped me on the shoulder and apologized to me for me waiting so long to be served. I give that young lady a five star for what she did!! Now that is a worker going out and beoned her duty's!!

I went in for emergency knee surgery as an add on. The staff was cheery, warm and super supportive. I don't know who to thank first. You made me smile during my darkest hour. I am now resting at home in relative comfort.

Les Taylor

My wife and I would like to thank each and every one of you for your kindness and professionalism that helped us through a trying time.We were very impressed with the team work of your staff, not to mention the knowledge and patience each of you had for myself and the other patients. This review also includes, everyone in the emergency ward. 1st floor #1025 & 1027. Feb 9 /13 to Feb 14 /13. Thanks for the pacemaker.

I had an MRI scheduled for 10:30am but showed up at 10am to get checked in, etc. Everyone was so friendly and helpful! I walked in, was directed where to go. Then was checked in, sent to the MRI area and barely had my sheet completed when someone showed up to help me. I maybe had to wait two minutes to get brought to the MRI. Everyone was so lovely and everything went so quickly. I was outside by 10:25am. I had never had an MRI before and didn't know what to expect. It was a great experience!

Had insomnia and was hospitalized for a few days !! Everything was perfect. The nurses, doctors the food and the rooms. I would highly recommend using the facility in an Emergency !! God Bless everyone there !!!

The nurses and staff blew me away with their kindness, compassion & efficient work. Extra huge shout out to Alise (sp?) in Medical Imaging. Outstanding care. Thank you!

Nanaimo Regional General Hospital I am very disappointed in the treatment of my family If you think things couldn't get any worse my father who has dementia was admitted by ambulance for a potentially fatal illness. They administered antibiotics which took effect and had a positive response to. Great A few days before his release the social worker stepped in saying my father's living arrangements are unsafe providing no concerns with what was unsafe. The decided without the family consulted that he should be placed in long term care. They would not release him even though the doctor told us there was no medical reason for him being there. We provided a document showing I was my father's personal directive which was drafted in Alberta. They told me it was not recognized there. We spoke with the nurse's, the charge nurse, the hospitalist which told us there where no legal binding holding my father there but it was in our best interest to speak with the social worker at the family meeting. We told the hospitalist that my father was being tied to the bed and the chair. We also found him unconscious tied to a chair when he finally came around he wanted to walk because his legs hurt from his arthritis and he had soars from being tied to a chair all day. He told us this was unacceptable and would not happen again. He said he would be provided a sleeping pill to help him sleep and that would be all. We were told if he needed anything else we would be notified immediately. We had the family meeting with the social worker who completely changed her story and said there was no issue with the living conditions and they wanted to help in any way possible. Great At the end of the meeting we were told that he would be released at 5pm the next day. We went to pick him up and found him tied to a chair in the hallway with no pants on but in a diaper surrounded by his own urine. The nurse's said that he was administer drugs to calm him down because he wanted to walk up the hallway a few times. I guess they were to busy and were scared he would fall so they tied him down and drugged him. Of course we were unable to pick him up because of his condition. There is alot more to the story of course but my opinion is that if we didn't have a personal directive in place they appeared to be trying to take over guardianship and have him put in a home. They asked about my parents finances, if they owned property, what its worth, ask for the T4s, if they had investments ect. What the hell do you need that information for ?

Tia D

The hospital bed is very comfy I slept while my roommate Pepperoni was with me while I’m having my eeg thing ❤️ When I tried to chat with my roommate Pepperoni ???? I stayed calm I cried a little bit I dreamed about the girl in the blue floral skirt cuz she’s very happy ???? Today my crazy roommate drove her car over my foot ???? and today my caregiver hurt herself oops ????

Jared Bayley

I had a really good experience at this hospital. I went for a MRI. It was really easy to find the place where I was supposed to be, and everything was explained to me thoroughly. The doctor performing the procedure was knowledgeable, and he had the whole thing over in a jiffy. I also went here into the emergency room once, and the doctor I had was very friendly and listened as I explained everything that was going on. Really appreciate all the work of the staff of this hospital. They do a good job of taking care of people, from what I have seen.

Andrew Akroyd

Being so overly crouded, staff are stretched and the rotating doctors keep patients guessing who is who. A family member after 2 weeks of sitting in bed with no tests or results was discharged only having to return with same issues. It all seems is that the hospital was doing were "billable hours" it was all quite frustrating and extramly stressful during an even more stressful time. The only positive fees back I have are the nurses who were extremely kind and always trying to help the best they can..

Dylan Mathieson

This may be premature but this is causing great disteress to my Mother brought in by ambulance. It is 60 feet between triage and where she sits. Her purse is gone! Totally unacceptable for a persons valuables being taken while so vulnerable.

MrEgrass

I called to ask what the protocol was for going to the emergency room with covid. The operatior was rude and not knowledgeable about policy or procedures. It seems island health isn't doing a great job of managing the pandemic. We were just told to go to emergency as normal. What a joke.

Jennifer R

All the staff I encountered were super friendly, patient and caring.

M VW

I will give this place 5 stars because of Gaydene. If you are lucky enough to get her as a nurse you will be fine. She is smart, intuitive, she listens and does what's right. I'm sure there are others and I hope this hospital treats them well. Dr. Carol Most was an excellent doctor and there are others. If I were to rate what happens with people piled up in emergency, these stars would be much different. It is my great hope that this hospital with good caring people, grows to meet the demands of the population.

Ryan S

Staff is super friendly. However they did not record any of my information. After 2 weeks of waiting to hear from a doctor (which I was told was going to contact me) I finally contacted my family doctor. She had no idea I was injured. Nanaimo hospital was absolutely useless in tracking down my information. WCB also did not receive any information. How does a hospital completely loose all of a patients information. And then not even attempt to try and help them.

Ethan Stephenson

I need health so good hospital

josip budimcic

I am stunned with service, yes I wait to get in but very happy with professional service what they provide to me ....thank you so much

Ida Z

I love our hospital. They are understaffed and we should be more understanding. I always thank God that we DO have a hospital as other countries don't , and people are dying of a common cold or infection. So what if you have to wait in a hallway for 15 or more house...at least you are inside out of the cold or heat. We do not live in a perfect world people, be thankful for the country we live in that has FREE MEDICAL and OUR hospital won't turn you away. I have had my 92 year old mother in the hospital and, YES, she had to wait in the hallway in emergency...SO WHAT!!!!. I, for one am very GREAT FULL for the staff, nurses and doctors. If you want to be mad at anyone you should be mad at the system and the government. Be thankful more than once a year (thanksgiving in Oct.). I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff, nurses and doctors. You are a God sent to us. You work long hours and you don't get enough thanks from people on harassment... I love you all.

Ryan Dean

The WiFi didn't work, but they saved my life. Very high quality morphine

Adelheid Francis Teshendorf

A recent report has indicated that the staff here are quite discontent re: management practices. This discontent shows in the care provided to the patients...pretty rude and abrupt treatment is the most you can expect at the best of times here. Emergency room is chaotic and understaffed. Pain clinic just wants to give injections that actually DAMAGE the joints...lots of hip replacements in the future because of this, I imagine, which will stress your already failing health care system. Absolutely pathetic.

Dustin Downey

Very quick, informative, and understanding.

The people here are very kind

Jesse Kaellis

When I was on the rehab ward Troy and Catherine were exceptional nurses. Also, Paula my physio pushed me hard to get my life back and help me to walk again. Brandon was a compassionate guy and a knowledgeable physiotherapist. All told it was above and beyond, especially since I'm a duel citizen and I know what I would have faced in the USA. Yeah, I almost died but I survived it and I'm back home now and still recuperating from a virulent spinal infection. I also do apprehend the stress that the nursing staff are under due to chronic staff shortages and cutbacks. They all do their best to give proper care and attention. I perceive that some of these people are burnt out but that is to be expected. It takes a certain kind of person to even do this kind of work. Over worked and underpaid is probably a cliche but it applies to the staff at all BC hospitals. I've been a patient in four hospitals, two on the lower mainland and two on the island. I also worked as a security guard at all of the Fraser Health hospitals and got to see a lot there.

Debbie Cotton

Sad the patients are left to deal with those refusing to wear mask. The greater allowed him to sit inside as he was eating candy to sit less then 2 meters from my son. Even supervisor dismissed concerns "he does not have covid". The individual who was apparently just hanging out not even waiting for care. The hospital was extremely busy and heard the nurses complaining there was no clean sheets The ER doctor did take the time to explain things better then most.

Yard Plots

Most of the staff here are great. Unfortunately some seem to be there just for a pay cheque. This hospital needs another mri machine. A nearly 9 month wait is too long. I do like the upgrades in emergency and maternity ward is great

Emergency staff need to help the people in emergency not just sit and chat while the waiting area gets lined up with more people waiting to check in. If they are not going to do their job tell them to go hide in the back.

Rick O'shay 54

I had an appointment to get a my second booster shot for rabies. The shot makes you feel terrible. Because of this I was directed to stand in the rain and wait until the nurse could give me the shot. This is unproffesional to say the least.

This hospital isn't very friendly towards female patients, I went to this hospital Five time in February 2019 because I was spitting up blood and other problems, all the (male) doctors said I just had a cold and sent me home even when they saw me spit up blood, I had H- pylori when the doctors in Victoria found what was wrong a YEAR later they were surprised that I was ok, the male doctors aren't likely to believe a female patient when they saw something is wrong

Had to go to emergency to deal with a back issue. There was no wait, extremely nice people, and they got me sorted really quick. I have never had such a good experience at a hospital. Everyone was really nice and they took my pain seriously.

andi Quatell

This is not about the medical care. It is more about patient/family communication. I left a message for a nurse to contact me as I am 2.5 hours away from the hospital. Well over 24 hours I finally heard from my husband's nurse, however she was unable to tell me anything about the plan for my husband. I was promised a call from my husband's Dr so that my questions could be put to rest. I have still not heard from my husband's Dr. The excuse is always "we're very busy". I appreciate that but there is an emotional place for every patient in that hospital. As such it's imperative to keep the family in the loop so we can support the patient. How are we to do this if we're continually ignored?

Zhu Shu

Waited 3 hours midnight with a 2 year old for constant cough, gave up, was going to walk away, doctor made her availabel for us, was very profesionnal and polite. Thank you.

I was admitted to the ER unconscious and dehydrated so naturally I was pumped full of fluids. Once I woke up I had to pee really badly, so after asking a few times I was brought a wheelchair toilet thing with a plastic bag in it that collects your pee, like a potty on wheels. I had to pee a lot. I was attached to some IVs and when I asked the nurse could they help me get out of the bed, they did the first couple times then after that just kept getting mad and speaking to me sternly like I was a child that I had to stay in bed. umm if a patient has to go, denying them the bathroom is Not healthy. So I kept climbing over the side and getting in trouble. whatever; I also am aware it's a busy place with a lot going on, but dipping over the side of my own bed literally 6" away to pee shouldn't've been seen as such a huge deal. The thing that bothered me was when my assigned nurse asked another nurse to give him a hand with wheeling the toilet away, she came in and got it and when she turned around and wheeled it out, she exclaimed very loudly, "It's Full, Like A Gross Clogged Toilet!" Publicly humiliating patients. .. who the hell does she think she is.. She has short brown hair in a ponytail and glasses. I was outraged. Lady, why would you be a nurse if you can't even handle a toilet? FOLLOW UP I submitted a formal complaint to the College of Nurses and to the patient care quality control office. Only the college of nurses take this seriously. I was told 2 weeks ago that the manager of the ER or her boss would get back to me.. still not a word. I'm looking to move away from this atrocious hospital so I have ago better chance of being treated with respect as in my condition I have to rely on ER's

Alison Nahanee

Went in last night at 1am extreme neck pain and back pain waited 3 hours to see a nurse only to be told another 3 to 4 hours to see a Dr. And could give me nothing for my pain what a waste of time went to parksville walkin seen in 1 hour by Dr and got pain meds and a physio slip .Don't go to nanaimo hospital we were one of three that walked out plus it was dirty put me in a room with blood on the sheets . Then moved me to the next room with blood on those sheets . No soap in washrooms .dirty garbage containers in exam rooms

My girlfriend was throwing up with a lot of bloods and she have a doctor's note but we still waited for 5 hrs just to see the doctor I don't recommend this facility They don't prioritize their patients Theres no way we are going back to this hospital

My Dad spent some time here coming in with pneumonia, he got better and sent home, came back with very bad swelling of the legs, could barely walk. They treated him, got very good care by nursing staff and looked like he was getting better but had an episode one day, almost like he was panicking, tried to get out of the hospital. Apparently one of the doctors there told him(in front of him, my mother and sister) that he was going to die, his heart was going to fail, his kidneys were going to fail etc. He died on October 30th. What kind of doctor would say this? I thought they were concerned about well being of patients, my Dad wanted to live, he probably lost hope at this point.

Hospital staff is great, despite the cutbacks in Heath care in last few decades, handwashing audits amongst some healthcare employees are in need of being addressed. In particular the doctors are in need of revamping basic hygenics in order to reduce infectious agents from becoming epidemic. The food service is quite good considering institutional food. Please support our Nurses as they are truly the backbone of any hospital. Recent upgrades on hospital is allowing the growth of Nanaimo areas growing population. All in all....I didn't die... close! But I'm still here.

Terrible patient care! I have never been to such a rude and unwelcoming place such as this hospital in my life. From triage to the ER, terrible communication, care and a clear lack of empathy.

Never met rude nurses like this before. Absolutely appalling If you hate your job then quit . Aug 19 @ 1:23 am . She was in a blue uniform at the front entrance Melanie and Tracy E. Your jobs are to help people who are sick .. Unbelievable.

Carolyn McIntyre

Staff in the Lab are very skilled , while at the same time, take care not to cause undue harm.

Hello, My name is Shali and I just home after spending over 2 days at NRGH in Orthopdics on the 6th floor. The hospital staff were nothing less than spectacular! Superhero spectacular! From the time I arrived at the emergency room to discharge, the staff and Doctors who looked after me were at many times ~ earth angels! Thank you all so much. I wanted to keep track of all of your names but in the foggy haze of pain I was in, I hope you understand how grateful I was for your amazing, amazing work! Tuesday March 9, 2021 Mid~Afternoon. Emergency Room: Blonde hair. Kind eyes. "Melissa" maybe...The team that worked together to make me feel so comfortable and safe until they could secure a bed for me. For those of you who had to cut off my Lulu Lemons LOL! I remember you but not your names ~ I'm sorry. Ortho Floor: Lynne, Felly, Elaine, Luisa, Holly and Esson (sp) of course. And to those ones in the darkness and fogginess who checked in me when I didn't even know they were there. Surgical Team: Christina, Brynn, Dr. Woo and of course the brilliant, Dr. Birchard. The support workers, the food service people ~ all of the people were all amazing! Your people did you proud NRGH! I am definitely going to become a donor! S.

My husband has been in this hospital a few times. He has always had great nurses and doctors. Hospitals are understaffed due to government cut backs. Nurses work 12 hour shifts. Doctors work incredibly long hours. Its hard being patient when you are sick or in pain, but there are protocols and procedures that have to be followed. The other day and girl in emergency was upset they were taking so long. The nurse told her there were 3 people in need of immediate medical care ahead of her. She got angry and left. We were there 10 hours before my husband got admitted because he needed surgery. It's hard to be patient, but that's life.

I have been going to Nanaimo Hospital for many years. All my children were born there. This year has been an exception for my own personal health and have had a couple of operations and procedures. All of my appointments have been an excellent experience with kindness and professionalism.

Tom Clarke

The colonoscopy dept. sends out a "customer satisfaction survey" after a procedure, but it isn't obvious that they read it, they certainly don't follow up with the patient when asked.

Michelle Robinson

Horrible hospital.

Robyn Lefevre

Chris Berg

Fantastic hospital with a ton of caring staff. In an industry where it is incredibly hard to please people they do an excellent job at NRGH.

Adrian Kraus

Iv been here for only a week and they can't even clean nice clothes. The food tastes like prison food and visiters aren't allowed to bring hygein products. That all for now but trust me there's more!

pamela wong

This hospital is terrible, pray you don't get sick. They don't know how to treat people and quiet frankly I don't know how these employees got their jobs

NRGH is basically a glorified nursing station with a very rare few of adept alchemists. Caught the Dr & Nurse In a lie. The situation as it appeared they screwed up. Then they came out and gave a truth highly educated no that is a myth people some of them may be more experienced than others yes. There are some that are very skilled and knowledgeable. They make mistakes that cost lives. Sometimes it's easier for them to just put people down! Some may lack in their ability to do research and communicate effectively or practice their medicine. They prefer to chat most the time i see and be virtues. Nobody's perfect and that goes for health care workers ok! They are only human. Also health care if not free. not free ! get it.... It's very expense. 30% of tax revenues go to health care. So if you pay $1000 month in income taxes plus other taxes. Like carbon, g.s.t, p.s.t, h.s.t and hidden taxes your not even aware of. An average working person is paying $600 to $800 a month for health care working couples $1200 to $1600. It's far more expensive than you understand. I rather pass away at home then go here. best to get diagnosed here and get away before it's too late. The same research and knowledge that they have is available to all of us. My experience with this particular hospital is what it is. Defend it for yourselves say how great it is until you find out it's only 20% great 80% not great.

EXCELLENT ER Care & Protocols at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital Aug. 11/21 My daughter (27) lives in Nanaimo; we live in Ontario. Regardless of a child’s age, parents worry when they are unwell. For a few days our daughter, who is generally in excellent health, had been ill with fever & abdominal pain. The day before she’d gone to the walk-in clinic but unfortunately, the Dr. she saw gave her no definitive explanation nor any remedy/ treatment/ diagnostics or RX. Less than a day after that ineffectual walk-in appointment, the pain & fever grew far worse. Thus, on Aug. 10/21 she went to the EMERGENCY department of NANAIMO REGIONAL GENERAL HOSPITAL. Straight away, the ER admitting R.N. at NANAIMO GENERAL realised that urgent care was required. After blood work, an IV & diagnostic imaging the Dr. found that she had a very bad kidney infection. She received IV antibiotics, was allowed to go home but the IV shunt remained in so another course of IV antibiotics could be administered this morning at the E.R. & to allow her status to be reassessed. We are EXTREMELY grateful for the EXCELLENT care given by the nurses, Dr. and all staff involved in helping our daughter. NANAIMO REGIONAL GENERAL HOSPITAL offered exceptional care; efficient, effective diagnostics along with responsible immediate treatment. Today, approx. 12 hrs. since her diagnosis, she feels remarkably better. The fact that she must return for another course of IV antibiotics & have her vitals checked are clear evidence of the skilled, accountable & extraordinarily professional ER staff. THANK YOU to all the HEALTH CARE staff at NANAIMO GENERAL. You have our greatest gratitude & respect. Sincerely, K & M Lenahan

I have Sciatica. I was pain free for 2 weeks. No one said that My pain would come back so when it did after 2 weeks I called the pain clinic and I wanted to speak to Dr Mandell instead his assistant called me back. He was so upset that I had called him a few times about my pain coming back that he started yelling at me, I told him he didn't have to yell at me like that he said Dr Mandell would never give me move treatments. I begged him for more treatments he slammed down the phone on me. If I didn't have a supportive family,a husband and 3 sons I would have ended my life right there. Now i'm back to sitting in my wheel chair and suffering every day with no way out and no hope :(

I went to visit a friend and had to find out which room she was in. The (one) person working who helped me gave me the wrong information. I was told she was in the post surgery room and unless I was picking her up then I could not see her. After paying for parking and surprised that surgery happened so fast, I left. Her name is unusual so that wasn't an issue for the mistake. She was in a regular room and is not scheduled for surgery for many weeks. Terrible mistake!

Received the best care with my son today. Everyone had a great sense of humour and we were treated quickly and with great care. Thank you!!

They called the wrong number to ask me for my healthcare # and then when i tried to call them to tell my healthcare # I had no idea who tried to call me so i went to the support services when i dialed 0 and the lady was kind of rude and talked over me. Said she couldn't help me if i had no name from whoever it was that called me then hung up. If i had a name and a department i wouldn't have needed any assistance trying to figure this out. Now i don't know what to do because I would rather give them my healthcare # than send them money that i don't even even have. I'm pregnant and struggling right now. This does not help me at all.

I went in yesterday for a day surgery to get K wires removed from my knee that were put in last year after I broke my kneecap. The staff were all friendly, patient and supportive as I was getting ready for surgery. I could ask any nurse a question and they would find an answer for me. The only downfall was that when it comes to paper work they were a little disorganized. Maybe it was because I went to the cast clinic to chat with my surgeon about getting my wires out and signed the papers there, but I didn't get a pamphlet of how to prepare for surgery. The receptionist that I called was super helpful and filled me in on most things I needed to know. However some things got missed, For example I didn't know I wasn't supposed to shave until I googled how to use the sponges. Also I didn't know until I got to the hospital not to wear makeup or deodorant (I happened to not anyway just by common sense). After the surgery I wasn't sent home with instruction on dressings or any extra dressings. I called a nurse friend of mine for advice on that. I had also asked for a piece of K wire from my knee, a nurse said she'd look into it and I never heard back. I understand nurses have several things on their mind and even at my work I forget things. Besides the few things that got missed, once again I found the staff to be very good, very supportive, patient and caring. I recommend Nanaimo Hospital, because of their caring staff.

Absolute mess. Construction everywhere, traffic control with no idea how to do their job, and staff that doesn’t have a clue where I’m even allowed to enter the building.

10 years ago I had my appendix taken out at NGH & I was left on my back on a stretcher without a pillow under my head. This obviously was stretching my abdomen & coming conscious from the anaesthetic all I knew was I was in pain. The attendant told me to just sit up. - Honestly, I wasn;t even aware of where I was or what direction up was. WHile in my room I was freezing cold all the time & must have asked at least 5 or 6 times for some extra blankets. Finally when a shift change came on an angel brought me 3 or 4 heated blankets. Move forward 10 years & WOW! what a difference. Staff was pleasant, attentive, explained what I was going to go through, were very considerate checking on my comfort as well as my health. Great job & improvement! - Thank you.

A friend of mine went to the emergency room, because she was losing alot of blood, and was not seen by a doctor for many hours. Had to wait for almost, 6hrs

I was there following a heart attack. I was in emergency for 6 (six!) Days! I never did make it onto the Cardiac ward. After the 6 days, during which I received only medication, I was sent by Ambulance to Victoria for surgery. During my stay at NRGH I was not allowed to get out of bed. Not even to use the toilet. I was requested to move out of the little room I was in several times. An orderly took pity on me and brought me a toothbrush after 4 days. I wouldn't say the care was poor, just a bit nonexistent! I felt abandoned. I only saw staff when time for meds.

Todd Bourcier

Great care and comfort. The staff were great from the front door to my departure. I was diagnosed by a very good doctor who took the time to explain and answer my questions. They utilized a lot of equipment and staff to rule out the unknown. I was very concerned of my condition and they asked a lot of questions to narrow down the diagnosis. Awesome experience, Great job NRGH !!!

Within certain departments at this hospital I do not feel safe going there. After listening to a story about how they treat mental health there I will never admit myself there.

I SPEND A LOT OF TIME AT THIS HOSPITAL UNDERGOING VARIOUS TESTING AND I MUST SAY, THIS IS BY FAR, THE BEST HOSPITAL I HAVE EVER BEEN TREATED IN. THIS STAFF IS EXTREMELY PROFESSIONAL, EFFICIENT AND VERY CARING. WITH A HOSPITAL AND STAFF OF THIS CALIBER, WE ARE REALLY BLESSED TO LIVE IN NANAIMO.

I spent several days in the short stay section and then went back for a procedure the following week. I hated being there instead of at home. The nurses, doctors and other staff made my stay VERY bearable. They were so kind, friendly, comical, empathetic and efficient. The schools they got their training at also deserve mention. I don't know how I would have lasted there without them. Wishing them and theirs nothing but the best!! Many, many thanks. This is the way all hospitals should be run!

I've been taken to the ER 16 times over the past 8 years. The care given was superb when the staff had time to give it. It is obvious there is some communication issues. That's not the staff's fault. They are so busy trying to prioritize so many patients it must be very hard to have contact with there counter parts, let alone the patients. I probably could give a different account of each time I was there. Admitted a few times and sent home to early, but you know, kodos to all the staff who saved my life. They are all awesome well trained competent staff and I most certainly put my fairh in them when they are able to attend to your immediate needs. It is also obviously a political fault on budget and lack of political managment. There is no way anyone in there right mind can put blame on any of the staff. The politians should hang there heads in shame for what they are allowing to happen in OUR Health Care system.

Best hospital I've been to. Quickly diagnosed and treated my knee injury, had surgery next day.

2.5 hr wait then the Dr. took 15 secs to diagnose with arthritis and prescribe me with ibuprofen. I felt like that everyone that works here has to try to be nice. I was a nuisance. I didnt deserve care. This Is this Canadian health care.

I had the most heart breaking experience watching my Father deteriorate as he was moved from emergency overflow to the fourth floor. As soon as he was moved he stopped eating. I tried to bring him food but was not allowed to bring it to the room. One insensitive Doctor spoke with me in front of my Father, and then later basically told me they didn't know what to do with him, and that he couldn't go back to his home. a very nice lady doctor tried to update me what was going on, but for the most part I couldn't get anyone to tell me anything. It was only at the end of the 2 weeks he was there I found out he was dying. He was sharing the room and there was barely any space for me or my other family to sit and spend more time with him. I realize that the nurses and Doctors are very busy caring for patients.,and students were coming into his room, I get all that. I was shocked at the lack of communication between the staff. One nurse crushed the medication, because my Father was having difficulty swallowing. The following day another nurse put all the meds in his mouth and then had to pull them out because he couldn't wake up to swallow them. i told this nurse what the other one was doing and he didn't know anything about it. What I didn't see was compassion, in a lot of the doctors and nurses. just protocol.

I went to the Nanaimo hospital recently. I had to wait about 3 hours to see a doctor, which I didn't mind very much. What shocked me was how unprofessional a few of the nursing staff behaved. When I first checked into the hospital, I greeted hello with no response, waited for the nurse to finish texting on their phone, and interrupted and spoken over several times while I tried to explain my pain. I understand that nurses and doctors have long and stressful shifts, but it was clear to me with their bored expression and tone of voice, and occasional social chatty-ness with other nurses while I sat infront of them, ignored and in pain, that I was insignificant and unimportant. It was extremely obvious that this nurse did not care about my illness and didn't want to be there. It shocks me how such a respectable institution can hire people who behave this unprofessionally.

Dan Crawley

My wife went in yesterday for knee surgery and I have to say they have treated her like freaking royalty! Couple minute wait for something is no big deal when you realize how many people these ladies and gentlemen are dealing with in a day. Thank you all for taking such good care of my girl everyone, you have no idea how much I appreciate you all!

Mckayla MacAndrew

If I could give no stars I would. Nanaimo emergency is ONE OF THE WORST emergency services I have ever been to. First off the two plus visits we unfortunately had to make were the worst. When someone goes in they expect to see a trained and professional doctor NOT a trainee with NO SUPERVISION!!!!!!!! My mum suffered from a fractured floating rib, but the young trainee with no supervision, no professional doctor around wanted to run tests and scans because he didn’t know what he was doing. He made her fracture even worse by poking around it, made her think it could be a blood clot and then to make things even worse didn’t even try to suspect she may have ANXIETY due to chest pains. She’s been clinically diagnosed with anxiety for years! We later saw another doctor in the clinic who confirmed it was a problem with her rib. No, the tests and scans shouldn’t have even been scheduled or thought of. If I had the name of the trainee I would have put it in this review because CLEARLY he hasn’t had enough training or experience!!!!!!!!! Now for the second time in this emergency room. Not only were there little to no nurses around they did not communicate. Everyone was complaining 6 hours later no one had seen a doctor or even heard from one. The emergency room was filled and yet some how no one could get a doctor. NO ONE! There was one couple who had been there for 7 hours with no doctor. My father was there because he had gallstones and one was not passing. The last time we went to emergency with him which was less than 2 months ago the doctor said that it may be able to pass. Later we found out it was so big it should have been blown up!!! Nanaimo emergency services is a poor excuse! If you can wait and bare the pain so you can see your proper doctor I’d suggest doing that because you rarely get help here. If your doctors clearly cannot do their job they should be sent back to school or evaluated by a higher person. If you would like more experiences from this place I like to call hell on Earth feel free to ask. Since these are the recent experiences!!!

Arlene spilloway

went in to er waited 15 hrs for a bed.. had severe heat stroke /heart trouble.. got a bed to be moved 7 hrs later to ward and to wait in hall another 5 hrs for a bed... then told would have to stay in hall... discharged myself. lot of gossip and chatter between nurses and staff (very loud) 2 nurses were very Rude! and no communication/supervision ..VERY UNORGANIZED.. They NEED an OVERHAUL!!!!! WORST Stay EVER!!! My arms were BRUISED from my Wrist to elbow from IV 's and Needles.

steve doering

Day surgery is extremely unorganized, was told a surgery was going to be at 3pm. Arrived at 1pm. Got changed and ready, and sat waiting with no one telling me anything at all. Felt totally ignored. Then at .... 10pm was told my surgery was cancelled. Why is there no communication of this earlier? They seem like they don't care at all. What a horrible hospital experience.

Having surgery has never been on my Bucket List, but since it was, I am very glad it was at NRGH. Staff from all departments were so fantastic, friendly, helpful and professional that I felt like a visiting VIP. When staff enjoy their profession, it really shows in the courtesy and care shown to the patients. So, thank you staff, management, volunteers and my wonderful surgery team, you are really the very, very best.

I fell on my vacation. I broke my wrist and shattered the radius. Had to have emergency surgery on Port Alberni west coast hospital. I could have woken up with no hand. I Was directed to Nanaimo hospital for a follow up. I saw the head surgeon. He took tie for me in between his surgeries. I was so greatful. He was kind, and extremely thourough because I was scared and in horrific pain. I must track down his name because he must recieve a heartfelt thank you and flowers for his generosity. I went home back to alberta Andy wrist rebroke and began to heal mangled. Had to have it rebroke for a third time and a metal plate put in. ???? I'm very greatful for Port Alberni west coast hospital and Nanimo Regional hospital they both made my horrible experience as peaceful as possible. ????

To Whom It May Concern: Just a short note to thank the administrative staff, nurses, physiotherapists and doctors for the excellent care they provided me during recent visits to the NRGH. A very positive experience for me. Thanks again Paul Gray

Very disappointed in my experience. I got hit by a car, very sore and hurt, and the nurse just left a gown and told me to change into it. I cried and cried trying to do it all by myself. Thanks. When discharged, I was waiting for a friend to bring me clothes, the nurse asked me to leave the room . Still injured af, I felt so much anger. No help whatsoever. No sympathy.

Norm Shokal

Very slow and run down had to leave could not wait any longer

zhitmonkey

I've had both good and bad experiences. I find that If your in extreme pain, they are quick to help you. But if you are in alot of pain but are able to manage it, they ignore you and have to wait long times. I have 2 medical conditions that prompted me visits to the emerg. Well my last visit was told they could see something but come back in 2 days if the pain doesnt go away. 2 days later. Go back in. Docs claim I was never formally diagnosed with my issues (which I have been but they couldnt find the right medical records) just to have them diagnose the same issue I've had for 7 or 8 yrs with lots of visits to emerg( again no records for it oddly) and send me on my way without any answers. And now no family doc as the clinic closed without telling anyone. I'm still left with pain and no answers.

devin chapple

Was denied mental help yesterday the way I was sent into the cold was sickening I don't think I will be going back ever again

Mike P

Had a mental health issue, was there for 2 nights. They sent a report to the ministry of public safety to have my license taken away. Kind of wish I didn't phone 911. My whole life has been turned upside down and put on hold because I had a breakdown. Now I'm stuck trying to find a family doctor and specialists to help me get things back on track where as the doctor who had them take my license away does not have to help me get it back. So if your feeling down and out..... maybe don't asked to be taken to nanaimo general

I broke my wrist while hiking. Dr Culp, Dr McLaren and all nursing staff were absolutely wonderful and beyond friendly. They made the experience as comfortable as possible. I am forever grateful.

I have been treated well at the hospital. Staff have been respectful and professional

Susan Abey

I went to emergency today and the nurses were extremely nice but the doctor treated me horribly. He was irritated that I didn't go to ocean side in Parksville cause I am from Parksville. He kept saying that my issues were not an emergency. I am trying to ask him questions and he just walks out the door. He treated me like I was wasting his time. I have not been happy with the health care here in BC since I moved here from Ontario. I have had some extremely rude Doctors since I have been here.

Mouse 2242

Wasnt there for the reason I wanted and even when I went to the Emergency entrance, it took HOURS; 10 hours to be exact. I had to get an epi pen and get my auntie to stab with it cause this hospital didnt help me

The staff in the ICU saved my sister who was on life support for 20 days. The nurses and doctors and respiratory therapy...students...pharmacist and specialists... all amazing!! I cant thank you all enough!!

Danielle Mandrafina

Big shout out to Josh in emerg for being a wonderful nurse. He was caring and attentive ! Keep up the good work, you are appreciated !

Very professional. If you do not mind the wait time, you will not find a better place to be treated for your problem or illness.
