Dr. Azher was my primary care physician for the better part of a decade, but I found the quality of her care declined over time. Recently I went to her to discuss a misunderstanding about a referral for a therapist and to address my depression as I was having concerning negative thoughts. She did provide me with a new referral, but she also wanted to know why I had not been in for treatment and monitoring. I told her I had not been coming to her because I felt she was not providing me with adequate care or listening to me, and she dismissed me from her practice on the spot without further discussion. I did not get the opportunity to tell her that I wanted to work with her to repair our doctor-patient relationship. I was told simply that if I found her care inadequate, I could find someone else and that I was no longer her patient. I was told not to return to her practice. This is the first time I’ve expressed a critical opinion of her care-taking in the many years I have known her. I feel it was extremely unprofessional to dismiss a long-term patient under these circumstances, particularly during a pandemic and a physician shortage. I was completely blindsided by her reaction. She does not take negative feedback well, and will apparently discard patients who express dissatisfaction. Five years ago, I would have proudly recommended her as a physician. I don’t know what happened, but she’s not the same caring doctor she used to be. Given the doctor shortage in the province, I would say she’s better than no doctor at all, but I would advise against seeing her if you have other options.
