REVIEWS OF Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital IN Orillia

I have had to use Soldiers Memorial for both emergency and day surgery. I have had nothing but good to say about the staff and hospital. Only 4 stars because there is always room to improve. Too many people use the emergency facility for non emergency ailments. Sorry if you feel the wait is too long our system goes by most in need not when you walk in It costs our healthcare system a lot more in dollars and wait times than going to a family physician or walk in clinic.

Brittany Pelland

I luckily didn't have to wait too long in the emerge, the nurses were very friendly and helpful. I had Dr. Barnet and he was very professional and helpful as well. Overall it's was a good experience all things considered.

Brought child in for test. I was denied access as I am unable to wear a mask. I had shield on. I have been to other Hospitals, and specialists and they have no issue with shield. It says to me should I have a health emergency I will not be attending this hospital. Apparently my Heath and mental well-being doesn’t matter. Discrimination sucks and hurts!!

worst hospital ever. every. time. it's the only thing they are consistent with. my daughter broke her arm and we waited 5 hours!!! while she was screaming in pain!!! I had a surgery booked here and their day ran late so they made me …

Went in for a hernia november of 2020, I was having issues with my identification due to a double-registration of my birth. So I was without a health card or photo ID (I now have my OHIP card and photo id thankfully, after reaching out to OHIP about my situation for the 7th time that year, I have an apology letter for my situation) I had print-outs showing that I have medical coverage and the print outs even had my OHIP number. The receptionist asked me 4 times where I was living before Canada, I'm Native American. I told the ER doctor that I smoke pot when he asked me about drug abuse, and because I admitted to using a legal drug, I was refused and pain medication. I was sat on a bed tilted backwards feeling immense pain for 3 hours on my phone while waiting for ice. I had to get out of the hospital bed and go ask the nurses where my ice was after 3 hours of waiting in pain. In the time that I was sitting there waiting for my ice, a white man was treated for a sprained ankle and was in and out within 20 minutes. Another overweight white woman was brought in and examined for chest pains etc and she didn't even have a mask on for the entire time she was in the hospital. She was out in around 10 minutes. The ER doctor finally came back after I watched him walk by my room every 10ish minutes, chatting with coworkers. I saw him just standing at the nurse's station chatting it up when I was still waiting for my ice. Now that he was finally back, he tried 4 separate times to push my hernia back through my abdominal wall, without pain medication. He was literally laughing at me, while I was squirming in pain. He tried calling the radiologist once, and didn't try to call again. I was in the hospital for 5.5 hours and the radiologist was nowhere to be found, in the middle of the day. The ER doctor eventually fit most of my hernia through the abdominal wall, without pain medication, and then sent me home. He told me "come back if you feel nausea or start throwing up". I felt nauseous that same night and was throwing up for 3 days, I decided to either let it kill me or just pass, because I knew for a fact that I wasn't going to be given proper treatment at this hospital. Absolutely disgusting how this place is being run, and I can see why people say Orillia is one of the worst towns in Ontario.

I was in the emerg watching my poor uncle die...they were amazing then all of a sudden there was a shift change and they were yelling at us for having emotions. What a horrible experience...you would think emerg staff could be more respectful at a very difficult time. I followed all PPE instructions..but still they had to make me and my family feel more horrible on a very difficult day of our lives. When I go it will hopefully be at Mount Sinai or somewhere on university Ave in Toronto.

I want to thank the night shift ER nurse. All I know is her first name is Lindsay and she worked 7 pm shift Monday night. Ber compassion didnt go unnoticed. She went above and beyond and I wish there were more people in the world such as yourself

I am new to the area and fortunately avoided the emerg up until a few weeks ago. I have lived in several small towns in Ontario and worked in the Patient Transfer business for 8 years ( I've seen a lot of Hospitals) Soldiers Memorial Hospital was incredible, not only my time spent in Emerg but my follow up visit for a stress test was impressive. So professional, caring, efficient, thorough, and friendly. Cant say enough! Thank you!!

It is regrettable that Ontario hospitals do not generally ask for feedback. How else can they improve? However, this 5-star review is because several parts of the healthcare 'puzzle' came together for me at SMH. I was misdiagnosed with a sprained quadricep by South Muskoka (Bracebridge) Hospital - 1 star. A low-priority ultrasound 2 weeks later at Muskoka Algonquin (Hunstville) confirmed a more serious tear and quick referral to Orillia (5 stars for Hunstville). I have been working with both Drs Xing and Vora, who did my surgery. Both were patient, invited questions and from every indication, very competent. The nursing, Admin and volunteer teams were also excellent. Thank you SMH!

Really great staff member at door...but terrible nurse care inside..they only care about there jobs not patients its sad to see in this world...

Went to the hospital by ambulance in July, and I did NOT have a good experience. I had a really bad sunburn and heat stroke and had fainted onto a wall face first, hitting my head and my knee put a nice hole through the wall. I had to go by ambulance as I could not walk without fainting again or vomiting. The doctor there told me it was unlikely I had a head injury as he would only be concerned if I was above 70???? (I didn’t realize young people are immune to concussions!) and that we could order a CT but he said it’s a lot of radiation and the risk outweighs the benefit. He barely examined my swollen legs and they gave me IV fluids and sent me on my way. They didn’t offer a wheelchair or help to leave. I had to request one and they were annoyed but said okay. The hospital made me feel like a burden and probably thought by my age it was a case of being hungover, but that was not the case at all. I had to go through my family doctor for x-rays for my leg and a head injury diagnosis. Now we are September and I am still in physiotherapy for a concussion, on reduced hours at work and have to see an optometrist for vision problems. Thanks SO MUCH for the proper care OSMH ????

If you expect a service and you get exactly what you asked for with a smile and competence, that my friends is exactly what I got when my doctor requested an MRI on my behalf. Thank you Soldiers'.

The hospital is kept clean. The ER has its issues but it is much better than some I have been to. They are very accepting of transgender individuals and will do their best to accommodate you or send you the right specialist to help you. The ER wait averages at about 2.5-3 hours for a non-emergency. Dr. Rodway-Norman is amazing! Would recommend this hospital for most issues. If they can't help you, they will refer you to someone who can.

1 star bcoz this was least i could give.. If i had choice I would have deleted stars from other people's review too. The worst place on planet to be if you are suffering. No one cares here, no compassion at all. Emergency dept. Is just a joke. Brought my daughter not even 3 years old in immense pain to get a doctor to check. From the enterance the experience started to go negetive. No screener to ask screening questions some hospital staff standing in lobby rudely mentioned wear a new mask ( no please, no thank you) just wear a new mask and left the area. Entered triage waited 20 mins for the turn for staff to take generic history and vitals of my daughter. Then i dont know for what reason there is a second window literally asked same questiona what triage staff asked and verified emergency contact and asked us to wait. Entry to waiting area at 8:28 pm sat on chair with my daughter crying her lungs out in pain 8 out 10 as I can feel that because even with elbow dislocated in past she didnt cry at all. With a policy of "patient with serious injury or illness will be seen first regardless of time of arrival" my daughter should have been give preference at least over someone aged about mid 20s with anxiety and not able to sleep problem. But no, it doesnt happen bcoz they were white looking and ofcourse no one say it out but it persist at non competitive places such as Hospitals and many govt offices. While waiting my daughter vomitted 2 times, I let the staff know however instead of asking someone to send us in faster she was worried about the vomit puddle on floor. 2 people on seperate occasion asked about puddle clearly stating a vomit puddle is more important than my poor baby here. And call to see doctor at 10:55. Wait time for a poor little baby who was actually in pain was 2 hours and 37 minutes.. I am definitly going to bring this to ministry of heath but this hospital and every other govt dept need overhauling where the taxes I pay get utilized appropriately. If Canadaian govt is not avle to sustain healthcare then atlease dont tax us for not giving the service. Dont visit here find some other place where atleast someone who value humans like call online healthcare services ( telus health etc.)

Sonia Albert

I've been sitting here at triage for 15 minutes and the first one just went, this other guy is literally in front of me with a packed room, texting. In my 45 years I've never seen something like this, the Dr's are faster then the triage.

Steve Lashbrook

I was brought in by ambulance after fainting. Brought very quickly into a ward. Everyone from paramedics, nurses, techs and doctors was thorough, professional and compassionate. Everyone! I am thankful for Soldiers Memorial. Kept me in as long as deemed necessary and sent me home with a monitor.

This is by far the best hospital I have been to. I went to a different hospital last week, where they barely even looked at me, despite me telling them all of my symptoms. The staff at this hospital did multiple tests to get to the bottom of it, and treated me as soon as they could. They were also all very kind and professional.

The care here depends on the day and staff. I went in yesterday with severe pain (a 10) and trouble breathing. Took me in right away in a wheelchair and was checked out and given pain med very quickly. Unfortunately the pain med didn't help at all, but they sent me home anyway and told me to take OTC ibuprofen which I did. Today I went back because the pain was worse. After 4 straight days and nights of unrelenting pain and no sleep, and now back for the 2nd time. Was told only 1 doctor on staff and many other patients ahead of me. The pain was excruciating and I had the shakes and needed to lie down, but they had me waiting in an examination room on a hard little chair. No care or compassion whatsoever. After waiting 2 hours I was told 7 people still ahead of me and I would have to wait like everyone else. I finally left and went to the walk in clinic on Memorial Ave. and was seen in less than 30 minutes.

Worst staff of any hospital I’ve ever been to. Had one good experience in 14 years of living in Orillia. Patient relations is a joke, they don’t investigate their own, for serious things, victim blame and ask victims to prove things and don’t help at all, even though all of the records are there.

Joon

Absolutely terrible. My family is dying and the nurses on the floor are so incredibly crusty and uncaring it’s unbelievable. Not even an acknowledgement or a hello when greeted. Eye rolls when asked questions. Short abrupt answers with scoffs and snickers. When I remember our last days together I’ll never forget the treatment of these women nor will I ever set foot in this facility again. Thanks for making this hard time even more difficult.

As soon as you say your not vaccinated no matter what the reason and even a negative covid test the staff is ignorant and doesn't listen to you and wants you out. Had a 103 fever swelled intestines blockage and extreme sore throat nothing worked or was getting better they did no blood urine or stool tests just checked if I had covid and sent me home

Andy Patel

I was in hospital and I feel and experienced, I believe and I think there s hidden descrimination In specific nursing’s staff. Most of the time they chatting each other and more attention to whites

We have not had a bad experience at OSMH. The staff have always been attentive and knowledgeable during our visits for various reasons (imaging, birthing, medical issues). The nurses there deserve a special shout out because they work so hard and always take excellent care of their patients.

Absolutely great, professional service. We went for (as we thought) ,,quick” check up with our son, unfortunately we had to stay much much longer. His health condition was much serious than we originally thought . We stayed in this hospital 4 days (starting at ER and ending up at pedestrian side ) From first moment when we came (2 ladies at registration windows , nurse and doctor on ER ,sorry don’t know names ) they treated us and other people around very well . Friendly and very knowledgeable professional staff ,they were able to pass not the greatest news in a very gentle and professional way to us. From ER we were moved to maternity and pediatric. There is no words to describe how good they tread little patients there. Nurses (Tara, Wendy, Paula and Michelle) dietitian Whitney & Kim and doctor Smith are all amazing. Don’t want to repeat myself but they couldn’t do any better job, first they calm us down (we were still in deep shock after diagnose) and showing us step by step how to live our new diabetic life. They took good care not only of our son but us parents too. We really felt like home away from Home there in that most difficult time. Huge thanks again to all of you there good caring people. If I only could I’ll give you 10 stars you well deserved that for your high quality services. Keep a good work guys. Chris

If you don’t have to then I would highly suggest not going to the orillia soldiers memorial hospital! They have horrible bed side manner, made my 7 month old wait 3-5 hours just to be seen. Just an awful experience all and all.

Gary Glassman

I went to emergency at Soldiers Memorial Hospital yesterday with acute appendicitis. I was seen immediately and treated exceptionally well and in A very timely manner. Kudos to the entire Emergency Department Team and Dr. Nicholaus Bauman whose amazing surgical team removed my appendix with extreme skill. The compassion and excellent bedside manner of Dr. Bauman and his team were amazing! Thank you to all! Five Stars!

Julie Katherine

Had gone early Friday morning, we were in and out within an hour. The nurses that were helping me with intake and procedures were friendly and warm. The doctor listened very well and was very thorough.

Diane Wilson

Went to ER and put into room around the corner from main area. Took forever for doctor to see me, was sent for xrays and then left for hours with no one even checking up...finally just left. They said they were busy, yet all beds but a couple were empty. I think they just forgot someone was in that far off room. Excuses do not work, been to enough ERs at other hospitals to know they are sadly lacking in patient care.

Steve McDonald

One star is too much, after waiting there for 5 hours I was diagnosis with Bursitis in my hip, I have had hip pain for the last three months getting worse, even with stretching yoga etc. The doctor stated that my lymphoid were inflamed in my groin and to take anti inflammatory medication for two weeks however my condition was getting worse and I needed to get back to work so I returned a week and a half later to wait another 5 hours only to be told be another doctor that the original one was totally incorrect and I have a pitched nerve and told me to go to physio but then was surprise when I mention my lymphoid then told me that he would get me an ultrasound then dismissed me almost immediately. (This doctor tried the good ole dog and pony show with me but unfortunately for him I am highly allergic to bull sh!t. I am still in constant pain and would like for the govt to institute that if an ER goes over a certain amount of waiting time a Canadian Tax Payer gets a $100-$200 tax credit per hour wait maybe that will f'n get this system fixed and stop our tax dollars to go to bureaucrats, administrators and "top" doctors getting paid 250+ K per year.

Had my baby girl delivered via c-section in late May. The staff were absolutely wonderful, especially the nurses in obstetrics. They took such phenomenal care of both myself and my daughter, that we just couldn't be happier with the level of care we received, truly!

Denise Richards

My husband and I have used the Emergency Department several times in the last few years. Always experienced exceptional care. During my visit last Friday I found every staff member to be professional, and caring. We are lucky to have such a wonderful hospital in Orillia. It's the staff that make it what it is.

Dyanne Ramsay

Extremely disappointed in the attitude and aftercare received after giving birth. Nurses waste your time and trash your confidence as a new parent. Also, requested a private room through my insurance and not only didn't get one but had them bill my credit card for a semi private. Forced me to call my insurance and sort out this matter when they should be on top of it. I've never called patient relations before for a hospital but I did for this one. It's a shame it comes so highly regarded; I should have given birth at Bracebridge Hospital.

Kyle Dorion

I'd like to leave a review regarding one of the young nurses there in particular. Connor in the emergency department took very good care of me and the entire patient line up while I was there on Friday October 5, 2018. I was there for his entire shift and saw how hard and effecient he worked to make sure all of us patients were well looked after. For such a young gentleman (23 I'm told), his work ethic and attention to detail did not go unnoticed. I hope his superiors take note. If you get to read this Conner thank you for all your hard work.

Jason Nickle

Unfortunately, I recently found myself requiring two surgeries within five weeks, so I I have chosen to complete this review as the 5 star rating was warranted for both of my stays. From the covid screening, to admissions, pre-op and post-op staff, I have absolutely nothing bad to say. I was treated with nothing but respect and received the best care that I could have hoped for. A special thank you and an extra gold star to the OR team and to Dr Vora; the compassionate way you all did your job made these visits much less stressful.

Jordan Hay

Just back from the MRI dept at OSH and have never been treated so rudely. The woman running the machine was so unprofessional and rude it was actually shocking. She made no effort at all to help the situation. Get your med help ANYWHERE else.

I was very impressed with the service I received for a biopsy of my temporal artery at the outpatients clinic. Helpful staff--right on time. Dr. Cape and his nurse did a pain free. stress free job on me. The parking was very handy to the clinic--easy for my 88 year old legs!! Thanks.

jashan preet

Very bad service no one cares who is in hospital and whom we want to direct call inappropriate and less caring nurses are their let them teach how to treat patients and don’t care about about visitors

We moved to Ramara ,and in June 2021 I had total knee replacement in Barrie but was able to go to rehab at soldier memorial. What an excellent experience I am having working with the staff at rehab for my knee replacement. The service starts as soon as you enter the building. Every person you meet is so helpful, friendly and willing to assist you in any way you can. The hospital is well aware of people’s needs, rehab, registration, is in a location that makes walking for your visit very easy. They have chairs for people waiting for rides. Staff are even nice enough to get you your ticket at the registration area. Never under estimate small hospitals in smaller communities. Thank you for all you do and I hope everyone is aware that Orillia soldier memorial is an a+ hospital.

I arrived at Orillia Hospital Emergency on Monday Feb 24 approx 11 am in extreme pain. The reception nurse and admitting staff were exceptionally prompt, friendly and professional! My waiting time was within reason followed by immediate care from the admitting nurse. The Doctor was in to see me not long after and did a thorough Q &A which was reassuring, ordered blood tests which were done in little time. The Doctor returned in a reasonable amount of time with ALL results explaining clearly in a friendly manner. I sincerely thank him and the wonderful staff at the Emergency. They made a very uncomfortable experience much easier due to their excellent concern and care.

My baby was sent by our Family doc from Wasaga to possibly by admitted, ER staff was phenomenal was seen and treated right away. Got admitted in the unit, in 3hrs. Amazing Nurses in Peds Unit, Michelle, Amy and Tayler! Everybody was very humane and we had exceptional service! Thank you all for looking after my 8mo old ❤

I arrived by Ambulance and was seen within 15 min. The nurses were kind and did their jobs well! Dr Bennett was Kind and clear on results, I felt confident in him. Good Doctor. Very Happy with care when there. God Bless the Doctors and Staff for their service.

I went to the Orillia hospital for the first time the other day, for kidney stone follow up. The dr in the ER although was polite did not take my issues seriously, he told me I was had a muscle injury in a my low back which did not even hurt and I needed physio. I returned to RVH the next day as I was not doing well. They provided me the tests I needed and was able to dignosis the real problem. I will not go back to the Orillia hospital again.

If you are a US Citizen seeking medical assistance be very careful. They will charge $718CA as soon as you walk through the door. As soon as I learned this from reception I said I would go elsewhere, and got excellent care at a walk in clinic for $60. Now they are trying to collect the $718 for absolutely no service at all. Update-following my complaint I understand that the charge will be waived.

The worst hospital that I have ever been in. I was told that because of budget cutbacks they didn’t have any kind of drinks other than water in the evening. There was no television and if you did not have a tablet or smart phone it was a shame. I waited an hour to have an x-ray only to find out that they had the wrong room and that I needed a different room so I waited another hour, at that point I gave up and left. My doctor was very good but working in that hospital certainly seems to be a handicap.

Laura Young

I am the next of kin for my mother and she's been brought to the hospital before in ambulance and the hospital never called me. I am at home rn worrying about her because she's 2 hours late from coming home from her dialysis. I can't reach her because her phone is dead. So I texted my cousin who lives by the hospital if she had heard anything and she said no. So she offered to go over and check for me because I don't have a vehicle and the buses aren't running and it's late. So she goes over and tells me that my mom is in the ER. The hospital NEVER called me to tell me. So my mom was in the ER for 2 hours and I didn't know. I'm not impressed. What's the point of being the next of kin if they don't even call you.

Allison Defrancesco

Always have the best experience at this hospital . The staff and doctors are so kind . Margaret, the emergency nurse was AMAZING!!! Made me feel very comfortable!

I absolutely have to leave a review here for Soldier's MH. I'm not so much reviewing the overall level of satisfaction I received the day of my injury, because that would not warrant the 5 stars I am awarding today. This is for my overall experience in general. Don't get me wrong...the staff are working exceptionally well with the tools they are given and the pressures they are expected to use them under, but there's always room for improvements. I just hung up the phone from a call from Dr. Chang who was the attending Emergency Physician the day I was brought in. It's a week and a half after my injury and it's a Friday afternoon! The genuine concern and empathy I felt from her was really (and I mean REALLY) appreciated. We spent a good ten minutes discussing my condition and her findings post- xrays. I'm no expert, but I see good things in Dr. Chang's future. She's definitely got it going on, and and the primary reason for the 5-stars. Soldier's...you are lucky to have her! Hopefully, I'll never be back....lol!

Anni Banfield

Thank you to the amazing staff who cared for me on Saturday night. Kidney stone passed the next day with all their fast attention and spot on diagnoses it was a short roller coaster ride. Fantastic Care and compassionate attention THANK YOU Anni Banfield ❣❣❣❣❣

Staff are unprofessional and rude. They don't answer any question just because there's "rules and regulations" even if I'm the patient. If that's the case hospitals and all their rules are useless because it frustrates patients to understand their situation and what's happening. Called 3 times to request a correction on the ultrasound they refused to do it because it has to come from the Dr. After 2 weeks they still didn't respond to the Dr's request. Patients could die if there's anything urgent in their results.

gamer fourgee

I'm starting to notice a trend. People with more foreign names on here have one star reviews. The white people give 5 stars. If you need urgent healthcare and you are a coloured individual, please leave the Central Ontario area and go to Toronto. I understand this community is predominantly white, but you can not neglect people's health just because of the way someone looks. You are Healthcare professionals and you're supposed to help everyone, not just white people. IF YOU ARE COLOURED DO NOT COME TO BARRIE/ORILLIA/INNISFIL, YOUR HEALTH WILL BE NEGLECTED.

Niki Hill

They literally saved my life. I had been battling a cold, which turned into wheezing etc, so I went to the emergency department in Barrie (RVH). They put a paper mask over my face, stuck me in a side room and told me it would be about an 8 hour wait....I was having difficulty breathing at that time. The ex was horrified, so he took me out of there and drove me to the emergency department here. I was taken care of quickly and compassionately. The doctor told me it was a good thing he brought me in that night because I had severe pneumonia and needed urgent care. Thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart.

I went today (December 26th 2020) I was given my bad at the second triage at 11:15 am. I was in a waiting room chair for a maximum of 5-15 minutes. I was brought to a separate room along with all others processed before me. I got my X-rays completed promptly and did have to wait for a doctor. However, the good spirit of these overworked team members made the wait a total ease. Despite everything going on this year every single staff member I interacted with was positive and polite. I was treated with respect as was those around me. The cleaning staff was one gentleman Chris. I hope he doesn’t mind I’m writing this but I have to say you were hustling and bustling. You continued to do rounds and I saw you clean that ER department continuously. I can’t say I’ve seen such stringent cleaning procedures completed during this year of absolute chaos. This really put myself (and I’m sure other patients in the ER today) comfortable with how well maintained and executed the cleanliness procedures were. The hospital was decorated and festive and I’m just so grateful to have such bright and supportive health care providers in our community especially during this trying time. Thank you! I hope I don’t have to come back but if I do, I trust i sill be in wonderful hands.
