So I called this clinic before coming camping just north of Elliot lake, we were bringing two of our dogs with us one of which was terminally ill, which we knew but he had been doing well. Called to ask about their services as we were traveling with a cancer filled dog and wanted to be prepared. I was told that they would see us if we needed care and that there was no emergency clinic in the area but there was a pager for out of hours emergencies. Good I thought... Our dog did take a turn for the worse and needed to be seen, I was very clear on the phone that the dog was in respiratory distress and needed to be seen that day, he qualified as an emergency for sure. She then told me that they are not taking any new clients due to Covid. When I told her I had spoken to someone the week before and was told I would be seen she did remember our conversation and reiterated that we were watching our dog die he would not live another two days until we were home. She then put me on hold (totally fine) came back and told me that the doctor would see him but we could not come in, if he needed to be euthanized they would bring him back out and sedate him in the car. We would not be able to be with him, they would not euthanize him outside or in the car. Did I mention I was a veterinary technician for 10 years? I know how this works, not a crazy person. What is wrong with you people? Expecting people to just drop their pets off for euthanasia, this was at the beginning on this month, not April. You can eat in a restaurant but you can't be present for the death of your pet? Lucky the other clinic in town is compassionate, they stayed open late for us, let my husband and myself be present(wearing masks of course), they lady at the front even took care of our other dog for us!!! Totally unnecessary at this point, and if you can sedate my dog in the car you can actually euthanize him there. If you want to keep a social distance that's cool, use an IV with tubing and step back. This was such a disappointment, none of the clinics I worked at would have asked this of an owner, they would figure out a way!!! The woman on the phone also told me that this would be the case everywhere and didn't think I'd find a place that would let us be with him. At least I know how things work and was able to recognize that this was bogus WAS able to find another clinic in town that treated us the way I would have treated a client, unfortunately it was not you. Public Service announcement to all Elliot Lake animal hospital clients, you do not need to leave your pets for euthanasia!!! Just go somewhere else!!!
