This hospital was an absolute nightmare today in the emergency dept., I took my wife who was in severe pain and she was treated with less than any decent regard that bone would expect from professional caregivers, she watched as patients passed her going in and was told that these people were priorities, when clearly that was not the case, she suffered and eventually asked I take her home because on top of not being seen or told in a respectful manor, it was going to be another four or five hours. I submit that the nurses in charge were rude, uncaring and unhelpful, we left while infection in her jaw was not as bad as the disregard and ambivalence shown by staff. I truly wonder how many others have left under duress and gotten sicker or worse from treatment at this emergency room? In short a NASTY PLACE IN SUCH HARD TIMES, thanks for nothing.
Waiting forever for x-ray because nobody here has a clue what's going on or where anything is. Nobody here can give you any useful information. It's a nice looking hospital filled with retarded monkeys.
Operators and nurses have snotty attitudes and no idea what they're doing. I asked a question about an automated call I received and the lady on the other end just said "I don't know. Okay thank you." and when I got bloodwork the nurse couldn't even get the needle in properly. Go literally anywhere else but here.
90 grand to scratch your toes
Staff are friendly, doctor was great!
Wishing I could review the staff and mgmt/building separately, alas google doesn’t have that feature yet. Emergency nurses were excellent Deb, Katie, and Kelly super nice and sweet,5????. I had to lay in a reclining chair in the ER for about 8 hours then to a bed in the hallway for a couple more all awaiting to be scanned to have my appendix removed... not sure how that happens in a brand new hospital but I know it’s not the nurses fault they might be more upset about it then me. Dr Moise and Dr Atherstone (anesthesiologist) were awesome! Post Op nurses Laura and Susan (?) were absolute gems! Thanks for your care ????
I had been in this hospital following some rib pains, got some x-rays done by some lovely folks who I appreciate. The two stars are from really long wait times, up to four hours sitting in pain, and one of the front desk ladies was horrendously rude when I went up and tried asking if I could use the phone/what to dial. The first time around she essentially shushed me and sent me back to my seat, which made the environment really unwelcome, and caused me to become reluctant to ask any more questions. I would understand if the hospital had been busy but the entire time this particular woman was chatting with a coworker. Unprofessional up front, but the doctors working behind the scenes are lovely and deserve more gratitude.
I don't understand why the emergency front desk triage nurse thinks its ok or appropriate to LAUGH at the patient for relaying what the DOCTOR told me coming out of ultrasound. Not to mention how rudely she talked to the 3 other people ahead of me when checking them in.
Huge Thanks to the day surgery staff!!! You made me absolutely comfortable!
This hospital is amazing. The staff are on task, empathetic and keep things light and positive. Every nurse and Dr. is concerned and honest with a pleasant approach. The environment is clean, organized and extremely well lighted, with privacy or one to one care when necessary. I have experienced the Emergency, and Day Surgery units, and the registration process is very efficient as well. Fantastic! Flowers to all of these beautiful care givers!
Very friendly staff, no set visiting hours when I went. Fantastic for visiting whenever you like :)
Super nice facility. Good location. Professional staff. Only downsides were 3-4 hour wait and one doctor for the whole ER which was busy enough for 3 or 4 for sure. He was great tho. Took his time. Listened. Good bedside manner. Good care and communication. Wish I could remember his name. Pretty sure he had a South African accent. I think it would be super helpful to have some communication after being admitted about wait time progress. Please like my review if it was helpful.
I had day surgery today, it went very well. The Receptionists, Nurses, Doctors were all Great.
I'm new to Courtenay and have had to visit the hospital twice for a shoulder dislocation. The triage nurses are amazing. The ER doctor was calming and talked me through a reduction without the drugs and xrays. Thankyou ???? I You are all so appreciated. Sheryle Elliott Cheers
Excellent staff who are dedicated to helping their patients. I know I was there. They are proud of their new facility and provide excellent care. I believe the Hospital is still staffing up some of the positions so there can be some delays in some departments. Overall they are doing a great job, so give them a break. Just be happy they are for you when you really need them!
Waiting in a emergency ward like crazy I had a surgery a day before and passing through pain even I can’t sit and stand they asked me to wait in waiting area like hours seriously !! Y its called a emergency when their is nothing like it
The ER in this hospital is a joke my wife and I have been waiting nearly 5 hours while she is in serious pain. They wouldnt even give her medicine while she was waiting and we are still waiting I had been here once before and waited 4 hours but this is just horrible the staff is running around like they don't know what to do or just sitting around talking to each orher. They make such huge money but have all the time in the world to sit around putting there behind on top of the check in desk chit chatting how sanitary. Oh I guess I see now where my tax dollars are going.
My mom called CVH to ask to speak to the nurse caring for her mother 04 July 21 who is 99 years old. First she was told there was no one there by that name after spelling it 3 times! Maybe she was at CRH. Then the unit clerk or nurse said hold on, came back to the phone and said, I will have the nurse call you, what is your number. After giving the number 2 times, my mother never received a call back! Seemed simple enough, since COVID started it has given the medical so called professionals an excuse for doing their jobs either lazily or poorly!
Great hospital and service. Very professional
Really good grilled cheese
Came into hospital with my entire mouth throbbing in pain. Could not even think was screaming in pain and in tears. There was no dentist open as it was the holidays so emergency was my only option. Waited 5 hours and was told upon arrival that they would give me something for the pain. Never did. Went up to desk twice asking for my medication and got dirty looks. Should of brought advil with me i guess. Not to mention all the staff drag their feet and stand around in circles talking to each other. Save your time because half of the doctors are so unprofessional.
Terrible experience!!! Majority of staff was rude and hasty. I give one star for the one nurse who was nice.
took forever.
Went with a friend place is clean and bright.
I had the misfortune of needing an emergency visit due to chest pain and temporal lobe epilepsy while on vacation. The er doc came into the small room I was sequestered in...did not examining me nor did he ask any pertinent questions and left after approximately 2 minutes. This is by far the worst medical care I have EVER received. I have worked as a critical care nurse in major trauma centers for several years and would have been embarrased to work with this doc in this hospital. Never again will I visit Comox.
Waiting is so crazy long, i’d dead before the doctor comes, i just need iodine and gauze. Hire more staff, very poor care here.
Six months ago I had food poisoning and had to be brought here in an ambulance because I couldn't drive myself. While getting my blood work done a nurse asked me if I smoked marijuana, when I answered this she immediately began informing me of her own diagnosis which was that it was an alergic reaction to cannibis and pestering me that I need to stop (while I'm in extreme pain) cannabis is bad you did this to yourself no sympathy here etc. I was then transfered to a bed that was too small allowing my shins downward to hang off the edge of the bed. With only one tiny thin pillow and a thin blanket that I sweated through in about two minutes. I was told that there was nothing more they could do for me so I signed myself out And left to recover with a few comforts . This place is poorly managed
Amazing building . Awesome staff
I have been awake all night in pain anyway researching on my android smart phone into my Vascular Experience these last two weeks I am at 12% battery life on phone and need to charge. This is only step one of my review. Will post once recharged. I believe people need to hear my story. Caution if visiting the Emergency Department with black toes and extreme pain... So part two... So grateful for my phone to need charging! My opinion has turned 180 degrees. Upon some research to the situation as I encountered it I now believe that my experience was handled correctly and professionally. I am now 2 weeks post Vascular Surgery w/ graph to my right femoral artery. And at this point all toes. Black as they may be. Although painful, grateful for the prompt attention and transfer to Victorias Royal Jubilee Hospital to receive Limb Revascularization. I find myself struggling to thank enough the staff of the ER in both locations as well as Dr. Stephen Fox, GP. at Dunsmuir Medical Clinic, Cumberland BC. And Dr. Peter Kuechler, VS.
Have visited this hospital a few times and I have found the staff to be incredibly helpful, and some have been truly exceptional. My only concern is that it is clear that VIHA needs more nurses and doctors...the waits can be very long.
Honestly the most ridiculous place. They wouldn't remove a cast that they had put on even though they made note that it was to be removed 7 days later for x-ray! So now stuck with a cast on and no help.
Having to go to the hospital for health reasons is never top on anyone's list of fun things to do. The nursing team and doctors that I met last week and again this morning were all great (well, except for the 5 attempts to get the IV in last week, but I regress.) I "even" got to see the inside of the operating room. I can't review the food because I wasn't allowed any. I did appreciate having a room to myself -- although if you are tall and they haven't set-up the bed for your long legs, ask. There is a button that lengthens the bed -- which my hubby found the next morning.after I complained about my feet crammed up at the end of the bed. One part that I didn't like but I know is necessary is that it's a teaching hospital. A student nurse was to give me a shot, which is NOT cool when you have a needle phobia. I know she needs to learn how to do a subcutaneous injection but let her do it on someone who is braver. I agree that the waiting room could be more comfortable, especially when the wait is long. I was also confused the first time in the ER and didn't see the slot (or read the instructions about a slot) to place my chart so that should be made clearer. I've now been in the ER twice and I haven't seen anyone who should be in a ward sleeping in the ER. That's good news! I saw someone complaining that there are no magazines (everyone in the waiting room was on their phone when I was there the first time. There is also a TV with captions) and someone complained about a lack of windows (I'm presuming they mean in the inner part of the ER which isn't the main purpose of that space.) but I've never seen windows inside an emergency room -- there are windows in the first waiting room before the security doors. I'd take this hospital over the big city hospitals any day!
December 2017 I experienced a pulmonary embolism. I only found this out after they immediately got me in for a CT scan after I was complaining of shortness of breath. The ICU was great during the week I had to stay there although there is an obvious staff shortage with only 1 nurse to care for 12 or more patients overnight. My experience would have been terrible in the old cramped hospital so I'm thankful for the new technologically advanced one. I could complain about the food but it's hospital food so what should you expect seriously? They will ask you what kind of foods you would like if you ask to be consulted about it. They have a tablet to record your choices unless your doctor is restricting it for medical reasons. I think your experience in the ER is different when you consider whether you are near-death or just in pain so you can complain about the wait time all you want. Everyone is triaged by priority so deal with it. Oh and I parked the car in the lot outside and it was still there 6 days later without any tickets or damage or anything else to complain about. The free reliable WiFi was a great way to kill time when I couldn't afford the TV service in my room and after a few days I discovered that you could walk down to a waiting room in the middle of the night and watch a community TV for free.
Was referred for X-rays and did not wait long. Very friendly staff. Premium service provided. Excellent facilities.
This place needs help! More doctors please. Came from out of town and had the worst wait times and everyone seemed miserable. Luckily the nurse and doctor that took immediate care of us were so nice. For such a new facility and judging how busy they were on a Friday night they need more doctors.
Went to the ER with extreme chest pain and racing heart rate. After 1 hour blood was taken, 3 hours later more blood was taken. No Xrays were done. Was left sitting there for 4 hours, with chest pains. Was supposed to be called the following day to get fitted for heartrate monitor, no one called. 4 Staff was disrespectful and unprofessional to spouse General feeling of uncaring from staff
Staff go above and beyond
Very clean, staff always seem helpful. Had to go a few times for blood work and to emergency and found all experiences great for a hospital. Wait time very reasonable for the staff size (rural hospital) and everyone very polite and professional.
Almost killed my wife after forgetting her in an ER room for 1 1/2 hours bleeding out. Sent another friends wife home during labour with a sleeping pill. The baby died because she fell asleep on her back. Worst hospital out of all the 3rd world countries I have been to.
It took me six months to bring myself together and write this review. I really do hope this hospital has an overview and better prompt procedures after this. First of all, I’d like to say the doctors have all been so great and professional, and most of the nurses were wonderful. My father was in palliative care, on day 5 we received a call to come right away, and by the time we arrived my father was in a deep sleep unable to wake. With great concern we called for the nurse who told us he said “I’m dying...” and they injected him with a double dose of morphine and was unsure if he’d ever wake up again. We then overheard the nurses asking each other “do you think we have him too much?”...that was unbelievable! After the sixth day we finally got the okay to spend the night, I woke up in the early hours of 4am to a staff member using the facilities in our room, it smelt the entire room and considering Covid 19, why on earth would this be allowed! Then again at 5am, two ladies (a younger women with brown curly hair) discussing what they found in a patients room with such excitement I heard “LOOK what I found” waving what appeared to be something of value, then I heard whispers “wait, is there someone else in the room!?” The younger one made eye contact with me and they both went running out of the room and slammed the door. Clearly, with my father in a vulnerable state we decided to remove his wedding ring and watch for better security as those are very precious to us. One of the days my family was checking in, a lady working at the front desk looked at my family with such attitude, not only that but upon check in, she really went at it with her status and her Karen mode came out and how horribly rude she was. My family works in healthcare and to treat my mother battling cancer whose loosing her husband and father is unbelievable! Extremely cruel and unprofessional considering you are dealing with the general public. I do believe this hospital has much improvement to be made with the front desk and the cleaning staff possibly stealing from patients in palliative care. Extremely disappointed with some of the staff, I hope no one else has to go through what we did.
I have never been so impressed by a hospital. I had to get blood work done and an ecg. I barely had time sit down before I was called. It was clean, and staff was friendly. Coming from Quebec, this hospital is a spa.
Nurses are fantastic but there is absolutely nowhere comfortable for anyone who isn't the patient to sit, (like if you bring in a family member) and when you have to wait in emergency for 4+ hours it's a real drag. Also nothing to read but magazines on crafts from 1996 and 1982.....
Fantastic service... compassionate and professional. Great signage to find your way around the hospital and lots of volunteers to assist you. Doctors are excellent, although they have a very busy patient list. Love them!
awful service. doctors didn't do anything. nurses didn't care about anything. services took way too long. discharged me without really looking into what's wrong.
Thank you to the staff. Each and every one of you were professional, knowledgeable, friendly and comforting. I couldn't have asked for more. Love the warm blankets!
Very friendly environment
Even though there was a waiting line in ER, they got to me pretty quickly with a couple of broken bones in my leg. Friendly, efficient staff in triage and x-ray and they all made sure I was comfortable and taken care of. Sorry to the naysayers here, but I have nothing negative to say about my experience.
I am beyond grateful for the wonderful care I received at this hospital following my heart attack last week. The medical folks wasted no time starting tests and getting me admitted to the hospital when I presented myself at Emergency, all the while keeping me updated on what they were learning about my situation. The doctors were thorough, the nurses were kind and attentive and even the food services and housekeeping staff members went out of their way to make me comfortable. I haven't spent much time in the hospital before, I'm generally very healthy, and I left this one feeling that I had received the best care possible.
Staff are kind and considerate
The new hospital is beautiful inside and out, we'll laid out , has gardens , free parking, a coffee shop... it's something comox valley can be proud of.
When fractured my vertebrae, I found out from the doctor handing me a note without looking at me, and said this is what you did, you can google it and walked out of the room. A nurse then told me to leave. No guidance, no recovery time, or what i should do, what to expect or how to care for it, or if it was stable, or what kind of care i should have be seeking moving forward, I'm supposed to google that now i guess. It's like me being injured was a bother to her. Quite possibly the most unprofessional experience i have ever had in a clinical setting. The doctors I have been to in developing nations where people claim they have worse healthcare systems than here are more professional and helpful. two stars for the short-ish wait time, but thats because of Covid, and nothing to do with the services or efficiency
Terrible experience here with rude nurses and drs. In the comox valley we have a shortage of family drs. it’s hard to get medical or mental attention. Dr Higgins I believe it was. Was quite rude and was talking down on other doctors in town. If you think where I go for medical attention is wrong, then send me advice to go to the right place.. don’t just laugh. Anyways no solution was found after 7 hours. He referred me to a specialist and said ya they are busy probably will take a few months. Then gave me no info other than they “might call”
Great hospital. Had a day procedure done and all the staff incl. nurses and doctors were very caring and attentive. My special thanks to all the professionals involved in my surgery. Thank you!
Went for blood work today. Found lots of open parking spots in the parkade. grabbed my number at the lab and was sitting for 5 seconds before my number was called, didn't even get the seat warm. After the required paperwork was taken care of, was immediately in one of the chairs. Painless needle, great conversation by some one who obviously likes their work and I was done. My fastest in and out of a hospital in my life. Maybe 10 minutes from parking to Driving away. Thanks
Excellent service, staff are just AMAZING, I can never thank you enough, I was treated on the 21October 2019. God bless you all , I was overwhelmed by the love and care that I was given.
I just had a colonoscopy on Tuesday and the staff were amazing❤️ They made me so comfortable, caring and they were fun???? I would definately recommend them. And the procedure went well.
Took good care of my family
My husband had an anaphylactic reaction to a wasp sting and we ended up in this hospital while we were on vacation. The level of care he received was incredible. Fast. Efficient. Empathetic. This is a five star hospital.
I had a minor operation here, it's a beautiful building, and very clean . The signage was a little lacking, but they had just opened! I found the staff friendly, and overall it was a good experience.
Maternity ward staff were all very friendly, patient and helpful. Very clean facilities, free parking which is a huge bonus.
I had my daughter at the maternity ward on November 6th at 9:25am. I'm not sure who the nurses were on between the 5th-7th but I just want to say how absolutely amazing every single one of them was. My doctor, Dr. Baerg was simple wonderful. I felt extremely well tended to, all my needs were met promptly and the delivery could not have gone smoother in my opinion. Thank you so much to the staff for everything you did for my daughter and I. She is a very happy and healthy baby, and I am a very happy and healthy momma :) whoever was on that week, thank you thank you!!
I am going to the hospital for a eye surgery and went looking for a map that shows how to get to the wellness Center thinking this would be an easy task after searching for 10 minuets with no luck even when typing in wellness centre directions Comox hospital takes you to the viha page!!!. Should be much easier to find directions . If there are any hmm Be nice to see this problem solved
my wife took her friend in to get checked because she hurt herself they left home at 2pm and by the time they got back it was after 8pm. so 6 hrs to see a doctor and have xrays when going through emergency makes me wonder if the money on this hospital is worth it, maybe more staff or better staff the money should of gone to. if the hospital is suppose to be better and more effecient its not, we should of just kept using st. joes if this is the standard and capabilities of its staff bevause right now its no better. VIHA way to screw us with this new hospital and its system.
Not happy with our new North Island Hospital Courtenay. My 77 year old mother went into the hospital via ambulance last night, she fell and dislocated her shoulder and chipped her bone....they told her to go home and asked her to leave at 3am!! So I picked her up, she could barely stand... but they made her leave! What the heck are they thinking??
I had a colonoscopy and the staff made me comfortable and less nervous
Had an imaging appointment and confirmed it 2 days ahead with automated call. Got a phone call from the doctor just 50 min prior to the scheduled appointment, when I was heading to the hospital. They had to cancel and reschedule my appointment. Would they think that I live nextdoor?
My experience getting my breast biopsy yesterday was phenomenal. I had myself worked up with so much fear that I felt sick to my stomach. But from the moment I entered the mammography room the nurses( techs) were so unbelievably soothing, professional and kind that I felt all my fear disipitate. I'm terrible with names, so I apologize if I get their names wrong, but I think it was Cindy and Soleena. Extraordinary people. I think the doctors name was Dr. Larsen but again my eyes were closed and I was focusing on staying calm and not moving. But he liked to sing, he had a good voice and a great sense of humor. He used the phrase when doing the freezing " it's going to sting like a saskchewan mosquito". Hilarious. If you amazing people read this please let me know your actual names for I'll be forever grateful for turning my scary experience into a really positive one.
Everyone I dealt with in this facility before, during, and after surgery, were amazingly friendly, helpful and professional. The level of care was very high.
When someone is accepted into the psychology ward as the designated visitor was escorted out because it was a covid which is been OK but I was not given any contact information on how to check in on my loved one on that ward
Ended up in ER with a strangulated hernia. Due to the chronic shortage of Doctors here in the valley the ER was packed with people. After a 3 hour wait I saw a Doctor, was referred to a surgeon that was called in, and that night had surgery. 18 months of dealing with COVID-19 and a doctor shortage has taxed the system and I am sure stressed the health care workers. I was so impressed with the quality of care i received from all staff and the facility here in the Comox Valley.
Thank you for such a great Emergency Room staff, each and every single staff member has been hands on kind and loving. I wasn't doing well this week, and you did it with grace.
My husband required a visit to the North Island Hospital emergency room due to "purple toes"resulting from blood thinners. WE cannot say enough about the caring, professional staff we encountered from the entry personnel,(gate keepers) to the nurses to the Doctor Young (amazing & caring). We watched other patients receive the same level of medical attention as we did!! Many many thanks to all of you!
My brother and I can't say enough about how amazing the care is at this hospital. My Dad was in the hospital for roughly a month until he passed. The care he received was amazing. The nurses---every single one of them treated my Dad with such kindness and respect. They were so compassionate to my brother and I during this really hard time. Thank you so much for going over and above. We truly are grateful. I want to add as well that the cleaning staff were supreme. They were friendly and did an incredible job. Deeann Eckhart
Parkade is a joke! No arrows to tell up or down.....and no covered access to the hospital. ...going to be horrendous in winter. Also wonder about security. ..very poor planning.
Cudos to anyone working at the hospital. Any department! You all are short staffed, deal with super entitled people every friggen day! You all just keep your heads up knowing there are more people that appreciate you than you know!! Much love!
I typically hate hospitals, but the service here was impeccable the rooms clean and spacious and they took care of my daughter and wife wonderfully. Thank you very much and i appreciate all the effort please never change!
So much better then the old hospital. Faster services.
4 nurses sat gossiping about their sexual relationships while someone that was beat up, and another person that was in a cycling accident (dried blood still on him) were sitting 5 feet away without help. Talk about what you want, but maybe do it in the break room and not while people are around the corner hardly able to breathe After listening to the nurses chat for 3.5 hours, the doctor saw us and said "we can't do anything, follow up with your family physician in Nanaimo". Would have been nice if the nurses knew that from the start.
My 11 year old son and I had a fantastic experience at the hospital this morning. We were there from 6:30 am until around 1 pm on the pediatric unit and there is not one thing I would change. The hospital is clean and orderly the way it should be....lets all take a collective breath and remember that these doctors and nurses work overtime to HELP US...I have also been to this hospital where I had to visit the ER for myself and they were just as wonderful then. Plenty of staff, all friendly and SUPER helpful. Thank you to everyone; Emily Mark (hope I spelled your last name right!), Holly, Jenn, Ben, Dr. Clark, Dr. Cook and of course I have forgotten the name of the amazing female OR nurse...and the cleaning crew do a FANTASTIC job from what I could see. So once again, THANK YOU.
Every nurse I have met here is beyond caring and wonderful.. no pay parking which is a huge bonus! It's a very modern building and the cafe has delicious sandwiches. Would highly recommend
Pretty positive. Day surgery was efficient and quick.
I’d just like to thank my nurse, Scott who made what could’ve been a stressful procedure extremely easy. And to Ivy and (oh dear, I was sedated…. And Ivy forgot her name too for a moment…) Dang…Can’t remember her name!) and of course Dr Moise. You and everyone at the hospital are amazing and keep us safe while still having patients get tests and procedures that are life saving.
I recently had knee surgery, and from the time I showed up at the hospital until the time I left, I was treated very well. All staff were very friendly and aware of sanitizing areas, and ensuring everyone was wearing a clean mask to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Don't agree with the low ratings. First off: clean, spacious , brand new hospital. Secondly. I would like to thank the emergency staff for saving me after my quad accident! They got me in trauma immediately, got my cat scan and xrays done right away. The e.r doctors and nurses that tended to me went above and beyond in their care for me. I am so thankful that we have amazing doctors and nurses like them in our hospital. They made a terrifying experience tolerable with their positive attitudes and warm caring nature. Thank you so much. They deserve way more credit than they get ????.
The ER staff have been prompt and attentive the few times I've been. The hospital is clean and there's always staff around to help. Could use more parking, as always. But the parking is free, which is amazing and such a relief when you're already dealing with a lot.
You are heroes in a time of covid 19 crisis.
An elderly friend of mine had to go back into the Courtenay hospital because of a fractured spine. She was first of all put in the Emergency Ward, as there were no beds in the regular hospital. She was then, after about a week, transferred to Surgical Daycare, where she stayed for THREE WEEKS. It's an awful place - just cubicles with curtains, no windows. During that time, she was not given a shower; not given any opportunity to even wash her hair. She was berated by nurses, who told her constantly that she would need to go home - she couldn't walk, for heaven's sake. Finally, after numerous complaints, she was sent to Victoria, where she is now. I only hope to God that I'm not treated like this if and when I reach her age of 87. Meanwhile, the nurses sat around and chatted - I felt like telling then to get off their backsides and take a washcloth to my friend. But if I did, I would have been told "it's not my job". So much for a caring profession.
Just came back from having pre-op tests done. Very impressed with the hospital overall and super impressed with all the staff that I came in contact with. The Comox Valley should be very proud of their new hospital.
