Nursing staff needs some patient empathy training. In the last year I've spent approximately 3 months admitted here. I've found the nursing staff (and even the food delivery staff) very discriminatory towards how they treat you. Factors being dependent on your AGE, if you ASK TOO MANY QUESTIONS about your treatment, severity of your VISIBLE SYMPTOMS, your ability to speak ENGLISH and the saddest part THE COLOR OF YOUR SKIN. Only reason I'm still at this the hospital is because the oncology team has recommended me to come here and the hematology Doctors are good with my Cancer treatment.

Mohamed Elsanabary

The best hospital ever seen. Good Covid-19 screening before entering the hospital. Clean and busy hospital.

Elle Jankowski

If U of A Hospital "patient information" staff (Lisa) can't manage their job with patience, compassion and courtesy, they need to consider another occupation. I get it, the whole world is distressed with COVID, but your job is your job. Be helpful and kind whatever you choose to do in life. But if your only job is to help often distressed people calling to locate friends/family they're greatly concerned about and you can't do that, change your field of work. Please.

Cameron Einarson

Nothing like discharging elderly patients with a heart condition that's lead them to be hospitalized multiple times in a month at 1130 at night with no warning or notice.

Eileen McClean

Excellent welcoming staff . Michelle and other MRI techs were welcoming , professional . Excellent staff . Made the process an easy one . Thank you

Not enough parking near front door of the hospital

If you are suicidal do not go here.

The ER is broken. While waiting hours in the ER I had a full blown gallstone attacked and none of the staff would help. Two nearby EPS officers were even concerned and asked the staff to do something, I could hear them respond "as long as he's still breathing he's staying in that chair". Meanwhile 5 staff are sitting idle playing on their phones, their salaries should be used to hire more doctors instead that can actually help people in an emergency. My partner wasn't allowed in the waiting room because they "didn't have enough chairs" yet they were mostly empty. Ended up going home where at least I could take some over the counter pain meds and lay in bed with my partner. Couldn't be more disappointed in our healthcare.

Joe Elliott

Staff is very unprofessional! Found them extremely rude, brought someone in with extreme pain and watched as everyone else walked past to see a doctor as were waiting for help. When it came to asking someone how long I found the triage nurse very rude, almost snapped at me for asking. Never again am I coming to this hospital

Glenna Lesko

Wait was long as usual, but staff were amazing as always

My partner had an event involving chest & arm pain. We went to the U of A hospital. Because of covid regulations I wasn't able to be in the waiting room with him, so I had to wait outside. The waiting room chairs were spaced into two groups: covid negative & covid positive/potential exposure. Why were covid positive folks allowed to be in a public space while we are in the middle of the 3rd wave? Perhaps we misunderstood the system, but it was very concerning. While he was in a separate room for an ecg he overheard a nurse pull aside a doctor to express concern over a couple that was covid positive walking around the emergency department without reason and "exposing all the patients". My partner was brought back to the waiting room and the covid positive couple were also brought back to sit in the waiting room. They were coughing & moving around. It felt really unsafe and very stressful. Once admitted into the ER, the staff were very friendly & although like all hospitals the wait was long and annoying, we could see that everyone was doing their best within their respective role. At one point a cardiology resident came in to say that everything was fine and indicated that he thought there was no reason for my husband to be in the hospital because of his age and general health (it felt quite dismissive) . He told us he was going to tell the ER doctor that they could let us go home. My husband got dressed, we ordered food to be delivered to our house. 20 minutes later the same cardiology resident ran into our little room to say that he was wrong and my husband needed to be admitted immediately for at least 3 days. That was frustrating, and rather concerning. What if he hadn't caught his mistake? Eventually my partner was admitted to the cardio ward (the Mazankowski Institute). The nurses, Dr. Murray & particularly Dr. Sehgal were really effective at communicating the process. We were so grateful for their kindness. Not an ideal situation, but we couldn't have asked for better care from them.

I had a kidney stone surgery gone bad(ended up with fluid in the chest) pretty much last week and every single staff that I talked to were awesome! What was supposed to be an overnight hospital stay turned out to be a 5 night stay and I needed oxygen and chest tubes and everyone was concerned and making sure i(and my roommates) were ok and checking up on us all the time! I’ve never met one single rude staff member there those days! Hi to Amber, Shannon, Ed, Jeremiah, Leah, and anyone else there I’m trying to remember their names! Lol

Switch board operator (lady) needs training on how not to treat clients on the phone. Hung up on me through me sentence. I called back she again did not let me finish my sentence before sending me to an office that she knows is closed. Did not give me her name when I asked. My son went to emergency with a broken arm, getting the cast changed 2x in a week. Not once did any of the nurses try to straighten out his arm before casting it. His arm healed bent. Dr's who x-rayed it well it was casted said as he grows the arm will correct itself. I took him to B.C. and the Dr we saw there said his arm should have been taken better care of by the Dr's in Edmonton. Went to the pedi cast clinic to get it off and the Dr spent less then 5 min with us. Telling us that it's healed. Healed does not mean cricket bones and a lifetime of problems. He now is in pain and when I phone the switch board I get treated unprofessionally. Not cool!

Shamas Arshad

Emergency wait time should be managed. Most of the time it's too much to wait to see the Dr. Inspite of this the Satff particularly Nurses provide excellent services to their patients without any obligation. I must say they are Angels on Earth. Keep up the Excellent Work. We salute all of you for untiring hardwork for the good health of the society.

3 stars is a bit of a stretch but the doctors are great and some of the nursing staff are wonderful. However there are some nurses who are absolute narcissists, every time I see one particular nurse on 4G3 my stomach turns. No personality, disrespectful, sits around on her phone and looks at you with cold eyes if you ask for anything. I'm so happy I can stay with my mom while she's here because I don't trust some of the staff.

John Holland

Great staff but Covid -19 is affecting everyone. I think the staff are doing the best the can under these trying times.

Sreya C

The Staff and Physicians are very helpful and caring. Contrary to the other comments, the people here at this hospital were friendly and took care of me compared to other hospitals in the city. I was taken care of right away and looked at. Yes, the wait time was long but the nurses and staff were very kind and reassuring. It helped reduce my anxiety and stress. Highly recommend!

Dan Lee

atrocious nursing staff. rude, aggressive, unprofessional and confrontational. i am aware of how hard a job being a nurse is and will be the first to say they deserve a raise, but a difficult stressful job is no excuse for the disgusting, unprofessional, borderline actionable treatment they gave me, its an important job and having such awful horrible monsters doing it negates your ability to give proper care. wouldnt be surprised in the least if your hospital has disproportionate levels of violent outbursts against them as they seem set on provoking such events

O A

Very clean ... very professional.. one of the best hospitals in the whole province ... lots of covered parking .. lots of different institutions.. ..

Jens Nielsen

The staff do not look after their patients. They sit there and talk and laugh while patients are dying. They took a patient off all machines including IV, didn't let her drink or eat and watched her slowly die for 3 days. That was what they called "making the patient comfortable" not once did they go into her room. They should be charged with neglect at the very least. Despicable people with no feelings at all. They had more time to sit and eat though!

Giana Navarra

Rude nurse told me to go to a clinic instead. Was having a spontaneous allergic reaction and had rashes all over my skin. Even had the guts to mock me over the call and hanged up on me right away.

Kirk Dewhurst

Great care and attentive service from all the staff we met. I brought my father in for day surgery, reduction of the prostrate and kidney stone break up. He will stay overnight to make sure his urine is clear. He came out of surgery into the urology unit 3E3. The nurses and support staff were friendly and courteous. I can say that our experience was a good one. It’s not like you want to be in the hospital as a patient but if you were this place takes care of you. Of course this is the same place as Walter C Mackenzie hospital. Overall this is a good place to get around in. There are several places to buy food and gift shops, ATM machines.

Jan Friesen

Best care I received from an emergency department. The nurse, the lab assistant, and the doctor were very professional and made me feel less anxious.

Vincent Charbonneau

I want to personally thank Dr. Hillary Jeanine Barrett Austin for her thorough examination. I just visited Sunnybrook hospital for the 24th time today after trusting you had my best interests in mind. I'm not sure how you're still practicing medicine. Oh yes I remember the CPSO did absolutely nothing in regards to this matter. They fed me some medical jargon to justify the total disregard for a person's safety and well being. I regret not questioning this diagnosis everyday.. Some of us have to live with the consequences of these actions. The worst part of it all, she denied ever treating me.Dr. Austin If you want to be known as professional start acting like one!

Reeann K. (Veira)

Was sent here by my GP for psychiatry advice and to hopefully come in monthly to solve a long list of serious problems I've been suffering with since I was a kid and things started off good, but by the 3rd or 4th appointment, I was told I can't be helped since the medications I was put on made eating really hard from feeling so sick. I told my psychiatrist this and was told she will not help me unless I somehow force myself to eat, even if I throw up from forcing myself. I've felt judged when trying to be open with my mental state as well and found her to be quite rude in the process. I'd avoid going for psychiatric help here unless you having an eating disorder since it's all they seem to want to care about.

Kim Mills

We are so very fortunate to have this hospital and all of its healthcare workers in Edmonton. ❤️

Respectable Hospital staff

Unwana Ekaette

Beautiful building, you will not know you are in a hospital. My favorite place is the John Scott medical library. I think it is a lovely library, it has a lot of resources to help you study. They have well trained medical professionals, some of the best in Alberta work here.

Mark Shymanski

The staff there were very gracious, courteous and friendly. I was greatly comforted by the caring and kindness they showed me during my stay there.

Boots

My family doctor informed me I had to go to the University Emergency for a possible ruptured hernia. I ensured I went early so it would be quiet. Which it was only 3 people waiting to be seen. Yet 5 hours came and went and I still hadn't seen anyone. So at that time I left. 5 hours? Disgraceful.

Phatboy Kush

I still alive and feel ????% better we need to really appreciate and respect the work these care workers are doing they put there own lives st risk at thr cost of savings ours thank you.

Lilly Juschland

It was amazing. Hospital was very clean, staff were very nice. I had no problems after surgery, so they do a great job. My nurse was amazing. I recommend this hospital!

William

Have to wait for 5 months to get an MRI and I am in agony every day. A person who has never met you gets to choose your "priority" I'm 20 and cant move at all and they decided that I'm not an emergency or even a priority. The Karen on the phone was extremely rude, 0 empathy or respect. Wish these people would experience this pain so they could understand what priority means.

Debbie P

Went in to emergency room to see a doctor at 7:00 am waited 5+ hours with no results. I was in there for a Hernia that has been persistence for 2+ weeks . I first went to a clinic and the doctor there was very concerned about the size of the hernia and the bruising on my stomach. He emailed a surgeon that day. But a week and a half later I never got a call. So I went back to the clinic And the doctor said go to the emergency room he even gave me a letter to give to the attending doctor however I never got the chance. If your going to go to the emergency room make sure you are prepared to be there for hours at least more than 6. Unless you go in an ambulance you don’t seem to matter. Hopefully I will be able to see someone before it bursts. This is our Healthcare system now??

Cyystic

Terrible Nursing staff in the ER. I'm trying to tell them I'm having difficulty breathing and chest pain and that I need oxygen and she just said what's you name spell it out and go wait we will call you up. I DO NOT RECOMEND THIS PLACE. GO AT YOUR OWN RISK. WORST ER IN ALBERTA.

Neeva Rana

Hospital is not best place to be but I had great experience in emergency.Nurses and doctors In emergency were so nice and they empathize me to feel better. Thankyou so much ...

michelle brooks

I would like to thank the emergency department. And station 5E3. They are so kind and wonderful, The lady who sanitizes the rooms is very kind, the food staff is wonderful. The doctors and nurses are amazing . I'm forever grateful for the care my brother receives everything he is there ????

Louise Wenger

It was clean. No waiting in line at entrance...there is security asking questions about covid..sore throat etc..

Great Hospital! There are pretty much all medical specialities in this facility! The Doctors and Staff are very good, very polite and welcoming! As you can see in the pictures the facility is very big! There Are all Medical specialties in the hospital! It is a bit confusing to find yourself in the building, because it is too big, but you will get use to it over time, and if you need help just ask anyone and they will be very helpful! Strongly recommend!

Michele Braams

Unit 5E2 has some of the worst nurses our family has ever dealt with, from walking into the room saying "Well let's see if they are still alive today not relizing that we were sitting in the room visiting our dieing loved one" , depriving their patients of food and water, forcing their patients to do things when they scream in absolute pain after they have been told it's not a good idea. MANY of the nurses in this unit have no compassion at all for people they are dealing with. Pandemic or not, short staffed or not nurses need to treat their patients better then they do. Sad when even other departments in the hospital agree about this unit and lack of care and respect they have for their patients.

madhvi sharma

I had a surgery today and i was very scared before going to OR. This nurse whose name is Rajender took really good care of me before and after the surgery. I had a lot of questions and concerns and she was the one who patiently listened to me and help me relax. She is a great nurse and i wish her all the good health.

My mother is dying. Doctors and staff are trying to do nothing to help her. They said all they can do is make her comfortable, but are trying to give her as little pain medicating as possible. My brother had to actually yell at them to do something. Yesterday, the room still had the mess from the day before in it. The whole day my family was there, not a single person came into the room to give her anything or check on her. I'd rather die in the street than this place. Update: they starved her until she died. Didn't even give her IV.

Mason Pitnoczko

6 hours still waiting. Chest pains increasing. Wouldn't recommend to anyone, unless you wanna die waiting.. go to misicordia. Do yourself a favor..

Travis Klimp

Unprofessional staff, ignoring patients waiting for triage so they could continue their conversations with their friends. One staff member seen repeatedly flaunting the mask rule and not wearing it while walking through triage and talking with other staff members. Staff was chatting and making jokes and swapping stories about their patients in front of all the patients in tiage, went in for a heart issue with a cardiac history, and waited over 4 and a half hours with no one ever checking on me. Decided to leave and try elsewhere, and the triage nurse was sour with me because I was waiting at his desk for 19 minutes and interuppting his casual conversation time with an ems member.

This place comprises of a great children hospital, awesome Mazankowski Heart institute and an incredible General Hospital

Melissa Warner

I have been treated so amazingly here each time. Most of the time the nurses are absolutely wonderful- and some know me as I have had to go more than I’ve wanted to. I’ve seen some truly amazing doctors (Dr. Cross- she is a saint, Dr. Holroyd, and Dr. Sookram, as well as the entire neurology team. (Dr. Jirsch is awesome). Even with my very complex needs and struggles I have never felt “unwelcomed” to seek help when I need it. The bedside manner is so strong with all the doctors I’ve seen, and most of the nurses are welcoming and caring. This is by far Edmonton’s best hospital, and myself and my family will always come here. The only thing I truly have a problem with is SOME (not all) of the nurses at triage. One in particular who wears a “CHIRPP” shirt with blond and shaded black hair. Everytime I have came in she is relentlessly so loud and always texting on her phone sitting around doing nothing. Not super professional when someone needs help, and you’re being paid to work, not to socialize. She was ridiculously unprofessional yesterday when a senior was asking for help and she was responding in a “it’s not big deal” manner. He ended up falling on the ground and my husband went to help him and she snapped at him. Not all of the front desk triage nurses are like this however, there has been some pretty amazing ones that are very helpful and kind- and then there have been ones that are very stuck up and set the tone of being dismissive to patients who are vulnerable.

I am appalled at the negative comments I've seen posted here. I've been admitted to this hospital 21 times in the past 24 to 30 month's, my most recent stay was in September 6/21 to October 3rd/21 I was there for a month, my shortest stay was 5 days in the last while. The nursing staff is over run with COVID patients & I have not seen many comments thanking these men & women for putting their own health at risk & working tons of overtime to help other's. People get a grip on what these people are going through for the community and gave some compassion for them. If you have to assist some then just do it and be grateful for our healthcare. I've received the best care at this facility and thank all of the staff.

Kaitlyn Brooks

Absolute worst hospital ever. Older nurses are extremely rude, doctors are useless. I had the worst experience there as well as everyone I’ve talked to. They do not care about you. Too many students, no organization. Disgustingly dirty bathrooms all the time ( I was to emerge with a family member 4 times in 5 days) with absolutely no help. They prescribe you something pointless and send you home. Go to a different hospital.

Harbinder Dhaliwal

I was at UA hospital on 26 of July 2021 in Edmonton around 10:45 pm in the emergency with my wife has chest pain we were waiting whole night for our turn to get in but we ended up nothing very disappointed by staff no body call us when we asked how long we need to wait he said maximum wait time is 6 hrs which we waited after 6:00 am in the morning we came out from hospital without any medication had really bad experience

deanna rasmussen

Hey people please use the medical centers for small medical problems that is what they are for . The E.R . is getting Back logged it should not take 6 to 12 hours to get in to see A Doctor too many people are using the E.R. for a doctors office . I have had to wait up 14 hour with a broken hip in a lot of pain and it is not the staff they are doing the best they can . This is a great Hospital so please try to help those who have to go to the E.R. for serious problems also you can phone 811 for help you my have to be on hold for a bit but stay on the line they will help you . And the old should be taken care of right away .I have been there and I am not happy with this so let find a way to do it better Edmonton and we can .

Simone Smith

The doctors are great but some nursing staff need training on sensitivity compassion and care. All lives matter and should not feel less important than the next person. Treat new patient like new Tenant. Happy to take rent money but once someone else comes in you are treated like old rubbish

Sam Jamieson

Just had a day surgery there and I was blown away by how compassionate and friendly all the staff was. I can honestly say the whole process was quite enjoyable (for a surgery). The hospital is very clean and well kept. I am very happy that I had my surgery here.

Bob Beck

I was admitted to the University Hospital for open heart surgery, where a heart valve and 4 bypasses were performed. After the operation I was in the intensive care unit for two days and on the 3rd day was sent back to the ward and discharged at lunch time. With out a doubt the treatment I received was 5 star all the way. The staff were wonderful and caring and attended to my every need. The hospital was spotless and the staff could not do enough for you. Thank you for the wonderful care I received during my stay at this wonderful facility. A true 5 STAR experience. Thank you everybody, surgeons, nurses, and ambulance drivers.

Yue Wu

The majority of nurses and doctors were very caring and friendly. Except for one nurse, whose name is “Candis,” gave me a horrible experience. I waited for 9 hours in the ER to get my ECG, waiting for the examination the whole night. She was the one who finally gave me the ECG test, and she put all the unconnected cable heads onto my belly, and they were freezing cold. She was bringing an attitude, being so rude and impatient. She wouldn't even bother to listen to my questions. Candis is THE WORST nurse that I have ever met in my life.

Matthew Reber

My 93 year old grandmother broke her hip and it took 16 hours for them to decide which ward she should go to so she could finally sleep somewhere quiet instead of an emergency room. Pathetic excuse for a hospital

David Freeman

Unfortunately, I had to make a trip to an Emergency Ward. After checking (online) for wait times at various area hospitals, I chose the U of A (it said 5 minutes on a weekday morning). I was pleasantly surprised that it was indeed a short wait. I found the staff to be courteous and professional, regardless of the department I visited. The parking was pay, but the $14.25 (for 24 hours) was very reasonable. Also, the facilities were clean/disinfected, following remaining COVID protocals.

Dawna Trautman

Extremely frustrated, my dad is having surgery for cancer. My mother who has dementia is the only one allowed past the front door. The front door screeners refuse me entry so presently I am sitting bycthe front door hoping my mother does not get lost and confused during this stressful times in this huge hospital. Even though it is on my fathers chart and okayed by his Doctor I accompany them the front door screeners will not let me in. Even after explaining to the girl doing the screening. One would think there would be some empathy and respect for people with a disability.

Kylie Zilinski

I was in for a colonoscopy. Beth, the nurse who checked me in, was absolutely wonderful. Everyone was friendly and very professional and a concerted for my comfort.

Manny B

Just want to say a thank you to the staff the helped me, was in there last night and service was prompt, staff was attentive and friendly … Couldn’t ask for much more, thank you again.

Julia Paton

Every time I have gone to this hospital I have been treated like dirt. I went in due to anaphylactic shock and was crying because of the pain I had taken an epi pen so I was able to breathe a little he told me to be quiet and stop crying and that I was being ridiculous. Tonight I spent 8 hours as my spleen was inflamed, a fever of 106 and my tonsils swollen shut. When I approached the desk the nurse informed me that I had been only there for 5 hours and to sit down and we will get to you when we get to you. Absolutely disgusting bedside manner no sympathy whatsoever and it took me begging for 4 hours to get a little bit of Tylenol. Literally go anywhere else the staff are atrocious.
