At Home & Beyond

After spending 20 years as a parent with the Shelley Shearer School of Dance, I wish to share what a wonderful experience this has been, not only for my two dancing daughters but also for me personally. Witnessing the evolution of my daughters and the many friends they have made here at their "home away from home" has been a treasured part of my life that I hold dearly. My daughters started in their pre-school programs, which were a delightful introduction for our family into the world of dance. Right from the start, we could see that their approach maintains a high standard but also makes it a fun place to be after school, evenings and weekends. My daughters have been involved with many other extra-curricular activities growing up, but the love and passion for dance instilled in them grew deep. It's also a place where your kids are meeting other kids from all over the city and where many great friendships are forged, for both students and parents alike. The year-end recital in June at the Centennial Concert Hall is the highlight of all the year’s hard work. I appreciate how the music and costumes are age appropriate. It is evident that students here learn and grow so much because they receive superior technical training. Not many dance schools adhere to these high standards but that's what sets Shelley Shearer School of Dance miles apart from all the rest. I also enjoy the school's Annual Open House held each December, inviting parents into your son or daughter's class to witness firsthand all the progress being made. It is a unique experience to be right in front of the dancers, as you can really see how hard they are working and how much fun they are having. Parents are also welcome to watch all classes from the lobby, where each of the three studios has a large viewing window, a vantage point that is especially appreciated by parents of younger students. Although I must admit, I still love dropping by to see what the dancers are working on as they prepare for a performance. When your child is staying at the dance studio for extra rehearsals on a Friday evening or going in early on a Sunday morning, you know they love it. When they are still doing it as a teenager and even as a young adult, you know they must be doing something special here. Not only have my daughters received excellent dance training, they have also learned so many great values, such as commitment, perseverance and collaboration - all of which will serve them well throughout their entire lives. They have also been mentored to set and achieve personal goals, in turn eventually serving as teachers and role models themselves. Dance has been an integral part of their lives in such a positive way due to Shelley and her exceptional staff. Through it all, the Shelley Shearer School of Dance has brought great joy to my entire family. It truly is a very special place!

My daughter has been dancing at the Shelley Shearer School of Dance for over 11 years. She started out with one Prep Steps class and through the years has become a full time student in Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Tap and Lyrical dance. The staff at Shelley Shearer are amazing, they are a long term dedicated staff that have seen most of the students from new dancers through to graduation. They are a professional staff of skilled individuals who nurture their students strengths and abilities, and celebrates their successes individually. You know when your child is in class at Shelley Shearer, they are learning, growing, becoming independent, getting tremendous physical activity, and most of all are safe. As students head into their teens this is a place that becomes their home, and as a parent it is piece of mind to know where they are and that they are leading a healthy, happy, social lifestyle. As students mature they have an opportunity to participate in the assistant teacher training program, which offers further skills to the advanced dancer. This allows them to share their training and love of dance at Shelley Shearer with younger students. We didn't know what a wonderful studio this was when our daughter started dancing and chose the school for convenience, but we do now and we gladly share our experience. Shelley Shearer School of Dance is the place to be!

I am in my 11th year at Shelley Shearer School of Dance, and I have enjoyed every moment of it. All I can say is, it is truly a great place. Not only is the instruction amazing, but the teachers and community as a whole is as well. I love having my second family at the dance studio. I started out when I was seven, and quickly fell in love with all dance disciplines. I have improved so much in my dancing, from when I first started, and it is all thanks to the support of the teachers and other students. I am in my second year of assisting at the school, and I am enjoying every minute of it. It is such a positive environment for students and teachers and a good learning environment. It truly does feel like my second family. The studio has nurtured my dreams of becoming a performer and now I am finally starting my journey in the fall. I have SSSofD to thank for that, as I would not be where I am today without this studio! Shelley Shearer School of Dance, is just an awesome place, as it not only teaches you multiple dance disciplines, but also respect, responsibility, time management, professionalism and so much more. I started dancing at Shelley Shearer School of Dance when I was about 6 or 7 and walked away when I was in my early 20s. I was never the best ballerina in the class but I LOVED EVERY MOMENT OF IT and now as an adult I understand why. I loved it because dance taught me life skills that I have carried with me through my whole life, I loved it because it gave me confidence, it taught me how to hold my chin high ...literally and figuratively... how to take constructive criticism, the value of hard work and to never apologize for giving it my all! Parents who put their children into dance pay a lot of money over the years for lessons, and ballet exams, and competitions and of course the costumes ???? , but the lessons their children learn are invaluable. And like me, they will carry those lessons with them for a lifetime. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Shelley. Thank you for creating a space and sharing the joy of dance with hundreds of thousands of children. ❤ I am now living in Calgary and teaching BARRE...a ballet fitness class and Zumba... at 5 different studios around the city and STILL LOVING EVERY MOMENT OF IT. I have been involved with Shelley Shearer School of Dance for about twenty years now, first as a student and then as a teacher. I have had so many memorable experiences at this dance school and I have grown and learned so much. Shelley and her staff are so dedicated to creating a positive dance experience for all of their students and the dance school has a very welcoming atmosphere. I am amazed each year to witness the schools' accomplishments both in Canada and Internationally. Each annual dance recital is filled with a variety of entertaining pieces in a number of different dance styles. My love for dance has been fostered and supported over the years and I am grateful to be able to continue to be a part of this wonderful dance community.

Our classes are based on the principles of respect , committment, dance/performance excellence and overall joy and love of dance. Both my children are students here and they have a blast each and every class. My daughter takes two classes and my son takes one, they have many different times (son goes during the day, daughter on the weekend) The staff there are very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient with the kids. They make classes fun and enjoyable all while learning dance. Our family looks forward every year to the big recital which is a great experience for everyone. Top notch studio.

I joined the Shelley Shearer School of Dance seven years ago, after ten years of attending various dance schools in Winnipeg. I made the decision to switch dance schools after attending their annual recital and seeing some of the school's performances at the Manitoba Dance Festival. I was absolutely blown away by the level of professionalism and artistry demonstrated by the students; a level that had been unparalleled by any other dance school. When I joined the studio, I was quickly welcomed into a safe and supportive environment that fostered my dance education, helped me make friendships that will last a lifetime, and gave me opportunities I would not have had elsewhere. In addition to having been able to compete locally and internationally, I have been encouraged to expand my dance education beyond the school’s impeccable staff and award-winning choreographers, and have traveled within Canada and the United States, taking classes and workshops from some of the world’s top choreographers. Whether in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Lyrical, Contemporary, Modern, or Hip Hop, I am always confident that the instructors are teaching the proper technique and ensuring each student is executing the dance step correctly. After going through the school’s Assistant Teacher Training Program, I gained a new appreciation for my instructors and the work that they do. The level of training received by, and high expectations of each staff member ensure a safe and positive environment where students can share their love of dance with their peers, and where parents can ensure their children are receiving the highest level of training.

For the past twenty years, Shelley Shearer School of Dance has been my home away from home! The warmth, knowledge, and passion for dance is evident among all staff members in the studio. The studio has given me many memorable opportunities. To name a few, I have gotten the chance to perform not only in Winnipeg at different dance competitions and our year-end recital, but I also have been fortunate enough to travel for dance as well as participate in different dance conventions. Starting as a student at the age of four, I quickly realized this was something I truly loved. Even today, being in my twenties, I not only teach dance at this studio, but I continue to take class. Every year I grow as a student and teacher, learning new and exciting techniques, along with meeting new families. From pink body suits, tights and ballet slippers, to tap shoes and even sweats and high tops, I was able to grow and pursue my own artistry as a dancer at this school. The variety of classes offered is incredible! You can be any type of dancer you want to be. There are no limitations. I truly found my inner confidence through dance at this school. Throughout elementary, high school, university and even my professional career, my love for dance and my Shelley Shearer family will continue to be a huge part of my life.

The qualified instructors put their expertise along with heart and soul into every class, and into every child. The dance instruction is held to the highest standards, worldwide. The studio has the best pre-school programs, and every class style available from recreational to competitive. The instructors are constantly training to bring the highest level to the programs. I have been so impressed with the level of instruction and the amount of support, encouragement, and attention the little ballerinas receive! I have been dancing at Shelley's for 23 years, first as a student and now as an assistant teacher and I can say hands down that this is the best dance school in the city of Winnipeg, and in my opinion, in all of Canada. The quality of teaching and attention to detail that goes on at Shelley Shearer School of Dance is the best that you will find. The staff are all extremely friendly (and of course talented) and spread their passion and love for dance with all of their students. The studio is always keeping up with new and exciting varieties of dance by bringing in different guest dancers and there is a multitude of choice when it comes to the dance styles offered. Shelley is very involved in every aspect of the studio and can be seen frequently observing classes and providing feedback to the students. I honestly cannot say enough positive things about the school. If you are looking for a studio that has many different styles of dance, focusses on proper technique and helps build and support a love of dance then this is the studio for you. I know that when I have children I will only bring them to Shelley Shearer School of Dance.

I began with Ballet and Jazz, and ended up enjoying it so much I enrolled in Hip Hop, Tap, Musical Theatre, and Lyrical. Growing up, I had the opportunity to be taught by an amazing group of teachers who shared their passion for dance with me and allowed me to blossom into the best dancer I can be. What initially started out as a childhood activity, quickly grew into a genuine love for dance, and I'm so grateful to not only have grown up at this studio but to also be able to call it my second home. The training and the attention each individual staff member passes on to students in the classroom is unparalleled, and they ensure that every student is challenged individually to grow as a student and as a dancer in a positive manner. I'm fortunate to have had many once in a lifetime opportunities within the studio over the years - from competing both locally and internationally on various stages, to being able to teach my students and give them the same experience I was given growing up dancing. As a student, the knowledgeable staff members were able to shape my dance education into a positive and memorable experience. Through the studio I have been able to compete and perform on local and international stages; from the Winnipeg Centennial Concert Hall and Pantages Playhouse Theatre to competing across North America and also the IDO World Showdance Championship in Riesa, Germany. The studio has also made it possible for me to obtain accreditation in ballet examinations. The training and opportunities that Shelley Shearer School of Dance offers for students is unparalleled in Winnipeg. The studio also offers a Teacher Training Program in which I was able to partake in. Throughout my dance education, the staff members instilled in me a love and passion for dance. This is why, exactly twenty years since I began at the studio, I am not only still dancing but it has also turned into a second home for me.
