I went to Its My Party on Friday, 4 October 2013, having priced treated helium balloons on their website. I called to confirm. Upon arrival, I was quoted a higher price. Admittedly, this was an increase of only 25 cents per balloon, but it is a classic con called "bait & switch". I was informed that the web site was under construction, but also that they had changed the price 6 months ago without updating it. They also claimed that the website said prices were subject to change...I looked for that this morning, and it is not there (although the incorrect pricing remains). Rather than meet their advertised price, they were extremely rude. In fact, I cannot recall ever having been treated so rudely by a store manager.
"Bait & Switch" works like this - you advertise one item at a given price. Then, when the shopper comes in, you are not able to meet your advertised price. You may have a similar item for slightly more, or the item itself may cost slightly more than advertised (as in this case). The advertised price/item is the "bait" to lure you into the store, and the increase is the "switch" that increases the store's profit. This is not only unethical, but it is illegal.
Why do stores do this? First off, because consumer protection is at an all time low, and they believe that they can get away with it. Second, because 25 cents on one balloon is $2.50 on ten balloons, $25 on 100 balloons, $250 on 1,000 balloons, and so on. If you are an outfit that sells a lot of balloons, these incremental con games add up.
EDIT: 21 October 2013, and the website still lists prices below that which you will be charged in the store.
EDIT: 30 December 2014. In response to "Ashley Danger-Bee", she will note that I checked the price on the web site and called to confirm the price. This is not simply an error. Both the website and the person who answered the phone quoted the same price. Prices change. Advertising a lower price than you charge is illegal. Pure and simple. Have the prices on the web site been updated, over a year later?
