It is becoming increasingly difficult to pass by the area without stopping by Plato's Closet. The selection is unique to the environment and the clothing offered here are diverse, in good quality, and are regularly updated with the season. There is always something that catches the eye. This store makes a trip to the mall feel unnecessary, as you can find a plethora of footwear, hats, bags, and clothing items at one location. There are reusable shopping bags for use, as provided by the store which helps in perpetuating an easy shopping experience. The staff operates in a professional and enthusiastic manner. The dynamic they share with each other and with the customers is admirable to see and comforting to experience!

Thank you for replying to my rating Plato's Closet Kitchener. As requested, here is my review. This is an interesting thrift store. You are able to buy or sell here. My experience shopping is that often the clothes that are selected are in limited sizing. Anything with a brand name is often marked very high (although lower than most retail locations). I find that contrary to the advertisements that the store accepts based on style and brand, the branding seems to weigh more heavily. The atmosphere of the store is a bit dark and has the smell particular to a thrift store. When buying, the staff are nice enough (well for teen retail). Selling can be difficult. They accept very few items, likely to avoid reviews like mine. Note the rules they post and only bring in new or next-to-new items. Although I understand that buying items will be limited with a very choosey selection, I actually feel that the staff make it a really negative experience. Staff seem very judge-y and often seem to be discussing you and not your items. I know managers have replied to previous reviewers with a similar experience, but I really do side with those reviewers. The managers do take some precautions to intercept, however the instructions seem to translate into the staff's effort to smile or give more feedback, which often comes off as forced and you might feel awkward or patronised. I think this is really a matter of changing attitudes and not behaviours. To be fair, retail is a hard job and I am sure the added pressure to buy clothes that sell, makes it all the more harder. Policies about donation in place are currently not very great. Often, you will drive back, pick up all the items and then search for a donation bin somewhere else. I wish we had the option to say: buy what you like and donate the rest. Next I am in, I can use the credit or cash out. Truly, I think the problem is that of attitude. I expected that this type of business would help me achieve social-good goals; however, I feel that the focus is not on reuse, reducing wastefulness, and fashion equality. I understand that this is a business, but I expected the emphasis to be place on the socially and environmentally minded shopper.

Great service! I had 6 bags of clothes for them to go through and they did it quickly and with no complaints (I felt bad bringing in so many bags at once). Got almost $100 for the clothes I never wore and still left with most of it to donate. All the workers there are very nice, would definitely recommend going there if you're looking to make some cash on some unused clothes or get some new styles for cheap!

It’s actually so disheartening to read all the negative reviews about this location as I’ve had nothing but AMAZING experiences. The staff are so sweet and helpful. It’s great that I can sell items I don’t wear any more and use the money from selling toward new items at the store! The key to successfully selling items is washing your clothes before bringing them in and checking for any wear & tear plus stains because who wants to buy anything that’s covered in pilling and stains? ????????‍♀️ Not me! If it’s been in your closet for more than three years, it’s probably not going to be something that they’d want. If you’re an avid shopper like myself, you want to find items that are currently trendy and items that are maybe still in stores! The staff really know what they’re doing when they’re selecting quality items and looking over for wear and tear. I’ve managed to grab some amazing items like a Marc Jacobs leather bag, Ray Ban sunnies, barely used Lululemon leggings, lots of Aritzia items and SO MANY CUTE SHOES. If they pass on anything you brought in and you don’t know why or are curious about what they priced something at, ask! The staff is there to answer your questions and they are SO transparent about everything. I’ve never left feeling confused about why they didn’t take anything or ripped off because it’s completely up to you if you want to sell the items. They will never force you to sell or take the cash for items if you’re not 100% sure.

Great for buying things, love there clothes ad prices! terrible for buying things. I came in with a laundry basket full of guilty used brand name clothing that just doesn't fit me anymore and they took 4 thing out of all of it. I was watching them and they didn't even look through my basket to find the good stuff. They bought two faded Ardene bathing suit tops an Ardene short sleeve shirt that was not in the best shape and a pair of under armour shorts and gave me $13. I was very unimpressed that they didn't look at all the clothes in my basket since I had a lot of name brand things that i'm sure they would have loved to buy.

I must say I'm rather surprised to read anything negative about this store, it's selection or its staff! I have ALWAY has a wonderful experience here. I've worked in customer service for over 3 decades and it's not as easy as it seems. If you live life being miserable and grumpy.. people will respond to you in a similar manner. No one likes being interrupted and people don't have to drop everything just to give you attention so please be a little more understanding. I used to like this store until I brought in a small bag of in season clothes (maybe ten items) that were in great condition, freshly cleaned and they were all passed upon. I've seen items on their racks in far worse condition and way more dated than mine. They passed because some of the items were chiffon? but again I was browsing their items and many were the same material. Also said they do not take George brand ok, but they take Giant tiger and ALOT of Ardene lol what's the diff? Like another reviewer I felt they were judgmental and only pick the items they would personally wear. I will not waste my time again sorting through my good clothing, washing it, waiting an hour just to be judged. No thank you!

You can find some good things here most of the time, but honestly it’s not even worth your time to sell to them. Every time I go with roots, American eagle, and even lululemon they tell me they weren’t interested in anything- even though they sell stuff like that all the time in store. I feel bad for the people who bring in brand new clothing (that they were probably unable to return) and are being given $5 for a $50 shirt. Every time I have confidence about select items that are newer and name brand but they never take them. Not to mention half of the shirts they sell are falling apart and sheer- but MY stuff is out of style? Soooo good for the environment to keep cheap clothing over well made clothing that actually had a chance at lasting a person a while. Honestly, overall, it’s a scam unless you’re purchasing stuff from them. Don’t expect $20 when you bring in clothes.

I would like to start by saying that I think the buy/sell philosophy this store abides by is really a neat concept! From my brief visit, a few things caught my eye and I found the items quite fashionable overall. What disappointed me as a "thrift dealer" (that sounds so dope . . . literally haha!) was the buy rates, which were quite low for the quality, condition, and labels. I dropped off two bags of clothing and a faux fur coat. When I returned three hours later, they chose 12 of the newest and costliest items and I was credited only $57 (and some change) as opposed to the $68 that was owing. After offering the girl her choice of the refused clothing (which was fresh, quality, and some of it even brand new) to which she responded staff were not allowed, she handed me a folded $50 enveloping a $5 bill and some change. The remaining $10 was missing. I later rectified the error, but it will cost me at least half of that in gas to return. I felt doubly taken advantage of because of the improper change and also the lowball offers. To provide some context, the elderly lady ahead of me was given $20 for just two items (a khaki dress and some worn Western boots) and was told her other clothing was refused due to pilling and "older styles." I understand that Plato's Closet has many costs of operations, including staff and rent; however, a $300 brand new silk shirt from Aritzia I never wore -- an impulse purchase and mistake I will try never to make again -- was priced between $5-10 dollars. A beautiful faux fur coat (barely worn) from Zara that my mom paid over $100 for on my birthday a couple of years ago was also priced similarly. Additionally, two new Aritzia tops -- a one-shoulder blue and white striped blouse and a cropped purple tank top (both from last season) were clearly priced below $5, despite their original value (one was around $30 and the other around $60-$70). A Rag and Bone jean deconstructed jean skirt I paid well over $100 for was also priced at the $5-10 mark while one brand new cropped logo workout cover-up and an almost-new velvet cropped top and long, plaid shirt, all from AE, were, like the other items, priced exceptionally low. If you do the math, $68/12 = $5.66 per item. Usually I wear everything in my closet and not everything I own is brand name. Many of my most well-loved clothing are actually hand-me-downs from family. I also own may affordable pieces from Winners, Suzy Shier, Forever, 21, American Eagle, H&M, and Simon's as well as boutiques and some other retailers like Mendocino, Free People, Guess, and The Bay. I try to rotate my wardrobe and pair older pieces differently to recycle my fashion and adapt to my ever-changing style. What I've learned through all of this is to be sure about and enjoy your purchases as much as possible so that when you do happen to donate/sell them, you don't feel as guilty or dissatisfied. While Plato's Closet gives you instant cash if they like what you have to offer, beware that the rates may fall far below your expectations. Clothing depreciates and selling fashion items through poshmark and similar sites might be a better option for those who want more of a return from their purchases and are willing to spend more time and effort on selling. This brings me to another point. I think that the store is very trendy as I can see its appeal to teens and people in their 20s and beyond. However, focusing exclusively on the brand as opposed to the style and quality can be pushing a rather misleading message on youth. For instance, most teenagers I knew did not own Rebecca Minkoff bags (I believe I got my first Coach bag during late undergrad!). In undergrad, my main concern was tuition, not high fashion. It's neat that people can go to Plato's Closet and shop stores beyond their local malls, but this can also establish unrealistic expectations in young adults who may become brand-obsessed. Also, can't cute/cool styles be by lesser known designers/labels? My sweater top with a Gucci-inspired lavallière would have paired perfectly with the plaid skirt on the wall.

Dont waste your time and energy rounding a ton of clothes up, we literally took in like 5 bins of stuff and they bought $9 worth of clothes and tried to tell us they looked through it all in just over an hour. When we picked our stuff back up we noticed nothing was went through besides the stuff on the top of the bins. Everything was almost exactly how we packed it. Such a waste of time and energy. They could of kept the stuff to look through for a few extra days if they didnt have time, and i wouldnt of cared as long as they actually looked through it all. Dont waste your time here.

Very disappointed with the process of selling clothes to them. My girlfriend brought a lot of clothes to offer and they told us to come back in 3 hours. When we returned, they gave back the bag of clothes and didn't tell us which clothes they were taking. Afterwards we realized they only selected the most expensive item. They bought brand new, unworn pants with the tag still on it that was priced at $34 USD, and paid ONLY $4 for them. Very unreasonable pricing and non informative company. We felt robbed and played for fools. I guarantee they're going to resell the pants that they bought for $4 for AT LEAST $30-45. It was a rip off and a waste of gas getting there. People would be better off donating clothes to real thrift stores.

This is a good place for teenagers and some young adults. It is really cheap clothing, but nothing really special in terms of pieces. Very standard "mall brand" clothes. Not sure I’ll ever try to bring in/sell my stuff here ever again. First time trying and I am very annoyed and unsatisfied. Name brand, slightly used and outdated, but still worth it. After looking at some of the purses they had, I saw that some were in worse shape and mine are not considered worth buying? And it’s all because they’re over a certain period of time - meaning they weren’t purchased in this past year. That’s extremely stupid.

Do yourself a favour and go to the Cambridge and/or Guelph location as many people including myself have had a much better experience there in terms of selling your clothes here and just shopping in general! Their Instagram is very misleading, rarely items similar to that are on the floor. Makeup stains on most of the white shirts (probably from customers trying stuff on) but then take them off the floor!! If you will not buy anything with a stain then don't keep anything with a stain on the retail floor!!!!! At this location items are WAY more overpriced than other locations and I know how the pricing works very well, it is 50-70% of retail, but they bump up the prices for most items. In terms of selling, the staff and two management are not trained well enough. Especially the management. I prefer managers to sort through my things because I would think they have a better, more open mind but they only buy according to their OWN personal style. EVERYONE has a different style in terms of how we dress everyday, and just because YOU don't like something, someone else may like it. That is the reason we buy it in the first place! I've had pieces from Zara, Artizia, etc BRAND NEW with tags never worn that they will not even bat an eye at and bags that are packed the exact same way i brought them in, they do not sort through everything. Yet there are older, cheaper, worse quality clothes all over the racks.They DO NOT take the time to look and evaluate items properly in my opinion, and most employees are very messy when just throwing items back into the bin. If you pass on an item, I expect a respectful, and realistic reason. Staff is insanely rude and gives dirty looks at the clothes they are sorting through. Blonde manager has given me the most unpleasant experience. I will NOT be coming back ever again and will not recommend this to anyone including friends and family. Go to Cambridge!! Less wait time, consistent employees there, and wider selection.

I've been disappointed the last several times I've tried to donate here, and after today I will not be going back again. I went in with a couple of large bags of clothes, and made sure that everything was in good condition- no tears or stains. They did take a few items, but I'm fairly certain they didn't even bother to look through all of it. Most of it looked like they hadn't been taken out of the bag. They took many of my cheaper items while leaving behind pieces from Aritzia, Zara, Dynamite, Lululemon, American Apparel, etc that are both in near-new condition and currently in style. I'm very confused about how they seem to be so picky yet the store is full of mostly cheap and out of style items. Not worth the time and energy.

I brought in some Men's clothes a few weeks ago to sell at Plato's Closet and it was definitely a positive experience. Not everything I brought in was purchased from me, but the associate took the time to explain why each item was turned down - all fair reasons, mostly relating to being a little over-worn for what they sell to their customers. Bear in mind they do only like to purchase new-looking clothes. I feel I was paid a reasonable amount for the clothes I brought in, if a little on the low side. However, considering they weren't anything I had worn lately, I couldn't really ask for more and was happy to accept their offer. In terms of the clothes they had for sale, I wasn't interested in much in their Men's section, but that could be a matter of personal preference. I will definitely return to sell more of my used clothing in the future!

Brought clothes in here yesterday to try and get money since im a college student. I Brought in two garbage bags full of clothes, one of the first things the girl says to me was that next time I need to make my clothes more presentable and that the fact my clothes were in a garbage bag may hurt the amount they take? Like sorry im a college student I dont have time to fold every item. Then tells me its going to be an hour before they are done. Took like 12 items and only offered $29 I just let them take it because I wanted them gone but when I through the bags back in the car I noticed a never used sweater that was in perfect condition sitting at the top. ANNOYING. I won't sell to Kitchener or Cambridge again both of there employees are run and judgemental and only decide what to take based on their own opinion or opinion on you. Rather sell to the patch and get store credit.

I brought in 2 purses one was calvin klein and the other was guess and I also brought in a pair of pants that still had the tags and the original price was $90 and some more clothes and they gave me $27 for the whole thing even though they would probably sell the pants alone for $27.

Great store, nice staff, quality selection! Only criticism is to lay off of the Febreze for freshening up the clothes, my eyes were burning. My friend who highly recommended the store had the same criticism of the smell being overwhelming. Didn’t think it would be an issue but it was.
