Recently learned about this place from my brother-in-law. I was previously buying stuff on Amazon but the quality was very bad and there was no support at all. I went to Don’s Hobby Shop for the first time yesterday to see what they have. Long story short they have EVERYTHING. Pricing is the same as Amazon but much much better quality and you can get help/service at Don’s. Joanna helped me pick perfect contact lenses and makeup for a couple cosplay characters I’m doing. I’ve already gone back the best day! Can’t say enough great things about Joanna and the shop. It’s freaking amazing! I will be a customer for life! Can’t wait for there upcoming workshops that teach you how to do special effect makeup and do so so much more! Check them out ????????

Great array of popular costumes. Reasonable prices. Good props. Got a great prop pack for a pirate costume here. Those with strollers be aware that the entrances/exits are a bit narrow and have a couple stairs to each side because it is an older buiding. Fun fact one of the friendly members of staff informed me that it was formerly a bank hence the architecture, while they helped me maneuver my stroller out the door. Also note that parking is at the back of the building.

Went for special effects makeup. Wanted cream based but the girl pushed to try water based. Wanted a certain colour (yellow tone) and girl casually argued on which colour for my costume even though I knew what I wanted. (She argued blue tone.) Between the colours laid out on the table I pointed at the two I wanted (yellow tone) and she said “alright these two then” And legit switched the colour for hers in front of me since she was so certain of her colour choice over mine. I didn’t want to be rude so I bought it, thinking I’d come back next morning to just exchange when she wasn’t there... And surprise “we don’t do refunds” thanks for letting me know when I bought $80 worth of the wrong makeup and arguing with your customers on THEIR costume. Ordering from somewhere else next time.

The only place in Calgary that I’ve been able to find professional body paint and SFX products! I’ll add on the importance of professional because while you can get “face paint” at the dollar store it’s often chunky, oily, and cracks along your face. This store has products suitable for Halloween costumes, special effects makeup, and cosplay and they have body paint, contacts, wigs and more. Customer service: We were assisted when deciding which body paint brand to use and how to apply the product and they had extensive knowledge so I was reassured throughout, and recommended a makeup sealer since I’m attending an expo. Handled in a friendly and welcoming manner and the prices are very reasonable.

I really like coming here but they cheap out really hard on the balloons. The guy filled it up with air first and then put "some" helium in. I bought a helium balloon in the morning, it was deflated by the time it was time to use it for Halloween in the evening. Really disappointed.

Very dissapointed. I recently just bought a costume for my girlfriend it said it was a women's S/M her size is small. On the Package it was a picture of a full grown woman so i figured that would be ideal.... apparently it was a kids S/M costume. It had been visually re-altered 1-2 times. and it did not fit her at all. For sure never going back, highly would not recommend. unfortunately google only allows for a 1 star or else it would have been for sure less.

She said "my glasses fog too". She kept hounding me about it after I just ignored her as I was TRYING to avoid a conflict. Nope! She just kept going and going until I FINALLY told her she doesn't possess the authority to enforce ANYTHING about masks. Worst experience in years and I'll NEVER go back.... also, WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!

This is one of those stores where every time I walk in I think 'I could spend all my money here'. They have pretty much everything costume related, and if they don't have it, their staff are knowledgeable enough to be able to suggest multiple alternatives. They have a good range of kids costumes and accessories, although probably more adult stuff overall. If you're going for a halloween costume, go early, because it gets crazy in there for about a week leading up to halloween.

My daughter was looking for some pirate gear for Hallowe'en. Don's staff were ever so helpful, especially with the 'textured make-up' to represent a long knife wound. We hail their efforts tonight to see that some children have a properly costumed Hallowe'en that otherwise would not (their families are having a tough go just now)
