Great company, it was a pleasure working with Dan and his team. I'd highly recommend them for your next basement or bathroom reno!
We had a flood. We called Home Improvement People and they came right away. They were quick and responsive and guided us on how best to get through the mess. They were clean and fast. Would definitely use them again
We had this company come in for a bathroom consultation, and had the most poor experience. The guy was extremely rude, and made snarky comments about the size of our bathroom and how unrealistic our ideas were. At one point, he said "well, your bathroom is the size of a shoe closet, why do you want all these fancy things that you see on pinterest?". We've had several contractors come in to do a consultation, and NONE of them have ever come close to making such rude comments. Mind you, the things we asked for are very basic things, and all of the other companies have come back saying they are completely doable, or suggest feasible alternatives that fit our taste. I would not recommend this company to any of our neighbours, friends or family. Edit to respond to owner: it definitely was your company, as they left a business card and it matches your company name. After I posted this review, my husband immediately got a text from the sales person asking if I had posted this review. Please ask them to stop harassing us or we will contact the necessary authorities and our community board committee.
We just had our kitchen reno completed by Home Improvement People. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and believe our experience isn't the norm as we had quite a few issues, but at the end of the day they got the job done and we’re happy with it!
Went to the showroom on Castlefield. Was not a very appealing building. It's not a very welcoming place. Dimly lit with a few samples of counter tops and tile. Better to go online to see the style of cabinetry they make. Quality of cupboards in the show room seemed to be average but hinges below quality. I have seen better esp. the cabinetry in stores just up the street. Perhaps the quality of workmanship is better when there is an actual job. Receptionist is not very welcoming or helpful. She told me that they do not sell their cabinets to the public. They only sell them to their contracted customers which is fair. Ben is very nice and has some good ideas and has good knowledge. I would have used this contractor but pricing was way out of my budget.
From start to finish the Home Improvement Team were a pleasure to work with. Efficiency, quality and keeping our home clean was a top priority for them from the beginning.
Hired HIP after first consult. We redid all of our bathrooms and the entire experience was a success- good communication, quality, and time frames.
Update 1 year post-reno: The bathroom looks amazing, exactly the way I envisioned it but it was totally designed by me so I can't really give the renovators the credit. I've had the contractor come back to the house to redo the grout and you know within a few months, it's peeling and pitted AGAIN. What kind of products do professionals use these days??? I can't keep a towel ring up...it keeps ripping out of the drywall despite being the same fixture that was up for YEARS with no problems (what kind of drywall are they using nowadays too???). The salesman wanted me to improve my star rating 2 months ago, even bribing me, but you know, they deserve a 3 1/2 but not a 4. A very nice gentleman came to my home to give me a quote on a modest sized bathroom in an older, simple bungalow. This company gives you a quote for installation only, you have to buy all of your own supplies. He gave me a list of suppliers that they frequently recommend and instructions of how much material to buy. He said the page he gave me was simple enough so that even an 80 year old could understand it. For people like me who are completely unaware of how to buy reno supplies, I don't recommend this approach of having to do it all ourselves. If I want to put river rock on a shower wall for instance, I wasn't told that the grout wouldn't withstand being wet all the time for instance. i buy all that river rock (which is not returnable) and only used half of it. You cannot possibly keep calling the company with every little question you have. He answered one text message and that was it. The suppliers I went with also let me buy supplies without asking me the right questions that could have saved me extra trips back to do returns. The actual contractor who did the job knew how to do renos, I give him that, but he lacked finesse - his grouting job around the bathtub started peeling, mildewing and cracking 5 months afterwards. Plumbing on the toilet started a bad leak 6 months after the job was finished. They don't supply or install windows. The worst part was they threw out my vanity cupboard because the contractor's son asked my 15 year old if I was keeping it and without consulting the person who was financing the job, they agreed it would go even though I told the father in a text I was keeping it. Yes they built me a new one but it's the wrong dimensions and wouldn't fit the sliding metal drawers I had in the original. It was still relatively new. The reno cost 50% more than I budgeted for because I wasn't getting contractor prices for anything and because I had underestimated how much good quality items really cost. I wouldn't use their services again. On to someone else for the kitchen reno down the road.
I dealt with Daniel at Home Improvement People and I must say that the experience was great. Helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. I would highly recommend!!
We had our whole main floor done, running about the $100k mark. The HIP made our 'modular' kitchen look custom to our most desired liking. They have an awesome contracting team in every trade! Everyone working on your home will be polite, professional and willing to talk about what they are doing for you. They finished our project a few months ago, but they came back at the drop of a dime to fix a minor issue with existing hvac work we noticed after we started using the heat. It wasn't entirely their responsibility to fix it, but they didn't hesitate to do so anyway. We will be using HIP for any future project and would recommend them to anybody!
My experience with the Home Improvement People can be summed up in one word: Excellent.
We simply can't say enough about how pleasant the experience was. These guys come as advertised. I heard about them through their radio spots. They are pros. Clean, efficient, polite, and finished on time and on budget. It's a comforting feeing to know we have guys we can count on for our future Reno needs. Thanks again.
I cant say enough good things about this company. This is the second time I've used them. Two things stand out: Gerhard and his team's sensitivity in keeping the disruption and mess to an absolute minimum, AND the company's professionalism. Simply put, this is a real company, and a real business. Gerhard and his team are polite, low impact, put on booties to come in and out of the house, and dont talk loudly on the phone while they are working. Dan came on time for the appointment, and was a pleasure to deal with, even though the scope of work changed in the middle (as it always does). Their tile layer has a great touch and all the grout lines are straight. would absolutely recommend
Our shower was leaking. The Home Improvement People assessed the issue and redid our shower base and pan. We ended up redoing the entire bathroom and they did a great job.
HIP is a one of a kind project manager. Ben, the owner, was so helpful from beginning of our project when it was just a vision all the way thru the execution. There were no material surprises along the way and all of our emails or phone calls were responded to in a swift and efficient manner. Sometimes even as late as midnight. I would definitely recommend trying out these guys.
We were very pleased with our experience in renovating our master bathroom with The Home Improvement People. Great guys and great people at the office. We felt very comfortable with the entire process. Thank you to all those that made this happen so smoothly.
Love these guys. Would recommend Dan and Ben to anyone looking to do a home renovation.
Detailed and easy to understand estimate, fair price, great on quality, timeliness and responsiveness. Nothing not to like.
We had 4 estimates for our washroom before we met with The Home Improvement People. When Elia came in he really took his time with us and answered all our questions. He was very transparent on timing and he walked us through the whole process. Gerhard our site supervisor didn't let us down. He was wonderful and very informative. The crew was clean, professional and on time. I would recommend THIP to anyone looking to reno.
This is the 2nd review i am writing for the HIP. The first one is below. We just completed a renovation of our master bathroom and they did not disappoint. Thanks to all the trades that treated me and my home with respect. nancy We found The Home Improvement People on Homestars. I posted there as well. We were so impressed with everything starting from our initial communication. Haydee at the office was so professional in dealing with booking and billing. Elia and his crew answered our every question patiently and oversaw our entire basement. We are proud to bring people down to see it and love our new living space. Thanks guy. Nancy
I want to thank Trevor, Phillip, and Elia and others who worked on my condo. I had an excellent experience from beginning to end with The Home Improvement People. They were very professional, efficient, responsive, and accommodating. I highly recommend The Home Improvement People.
Such a pleasure to deal with. Great work and just as important they were so responsive to even the smallest questions or concerns. Would absolutely use them again.
Called to schedule a estimate. They confirmed a appointment and then called the day of and said that he will not be in the area that day. They can't even get there own people to show up.
I had a very bad experience with this company and in particular with the contractor assigned to my job (Caio). The quote was the highest of 4 that I received but I went with them because of a personal recommendation and thinking that I was paying for service and quality workmanship. I did not receive either. In my opinion the quality of work was poor and Caio paid little to no attention to the job. The job also took far longer than it should have. I would definitely not recommend this company.
I hired this company to do my bathroom and couldn't be more happy. During the two weeks the guys were clean, polite and did a great job. My bathroom looks amazing and I will definitely recommend them to friends and family.
We hired THIP to do our master ensuite. We were skeptical at the beginning because we've heard so many horror stories but let me tell you how we were put at ease once we met with Dan. Everything that he told us would happen actually happened. The crew was polite, clean and professional. Thank you so much for my beautiful washroom
I recently engaged the home improvement people to renovate my basement. Their pricing was very competitive but what really sold me was their transparency. They were very upfront and courteous and were an absolute delight to have in my home.
We called this company and are happy we did. They did a great job with our basement and we'll for sure recommend them.
Just finished a main floor reno. We are so pleased. Such nice guys and we felt so well taken care of. looking fwd to redoing our bathroom in the summer.
Thank you to entire team that worked in our house. You all respected us and our home and we love the finished result.
We recently completed a main floor renovation on our house. The work included a new kitchen, powder room, flooring, family and living room. From start to finish the HIP team never left is feeling like we were on our own. Larry was our Project Manager amd Charlotte oversaw all drawings and design. Jamie who is a true craftsman, built is kitchen cabinets that make us proud. The job began when promised and although we were delayed due to a snag with the countertop install finished well within the expected time frame. We hope to redo our basement on the coming years and you can be sure who we’ll be calling.
Would not recommend. They came out to my house and took detailed notes and then I never heard back from them. If they can't be relied on for a quote, or to even return your calls, then I would not trust them on a job. Simple solution for you: follow up on all outstanding quotes and answer your voice mail and email
We recently had our basement completed by the home improvement people. What an absolute pleasure to have these guys in my home. They took care of us every step of the way. Their attention to detail was extraordinary and second to none. I would definitely recommend them to anyone. In fact theyre going to my parents house to quote their kitchen. Thanks again guys for a job well done!
Hired them based on their reviews, and they did not disappoint. Would definitely work with them again on our next project.
I'm sorry I am disappointed in the quote the man had given me. $20.thousand and that without tub sink and electrical work. I wonder if he was putting gold on the wall of my bathroom. Thanks for nothing.
Highly professional and honest service.
As many would agree there are many ways to communicate professionally - and alternatively, unprofessionally. We would not recommend this company to partner with due to their very obtuse method in the way they choose to quote possible work - which indicates a total disregard for obvious reasonable pricing. It could also be inferred that they hope to dupe customers into paying ridiculous amounts of money for services that were quoted firmly by other companies AT HALF THE PRICE (which was still 15k). Their focus is on maximum profit per job regardless of the accuracy of the quote. A VERY SIMPLE “we do not do anything but full renovations” would suffice within the first contact before scheduling a visit from an “estimator”. BEWARE - your time will be wasted and you will be treated poorly with a quote that is very fraudulent in value. Do not be “duped” by advertising. WAIT FOR ANOTHER COMPANY - we are. Was a colossal waste of time.
We had our entire main floor reno. It was a clean smooth process from the billing to the last piece of trim. An extremely pleasant experience. Thank you.
The team doing my bathroom renovation, Nadia, John and Elvis, were incredibly efficient, knowledgeable, very skilled and easy to work with. They tidied up at the end of each day and before I knew it the bathroom was completed on the eighth day. It looks great and was left spotless. Thanks, too, to Gerhard for his help and guidance. Company highly recommended.
We had such a great experience with this company from the beginning to the end. Our kitchen looks great and we are very thankful to have had a great team being respectful to our home and working over and beyond to make sure we were overall happy. Many Thanks.
I engaged the Home Improvement People to gut and redo a bathroom in an older Toronto building. Despite several frustrations detailed below, the quality of work was quite good as was the follow up from "head office" so on that basis I have given them a four out of five rating. I would use them again but perhaps request a different team. Here was my experience. After an initial inquiry to them, Mark came to inspect and provide an estimate for the work to be done. The quote (estimate) was received on a timely basis but was not sufficiently detailed, and did not include any statements of appropriate insurance coverage or warranty. After requesting the addition of items that were left out, lacked specificity, etc., a suitable revised estimate was provided without difficulty. Mark informed us at the initial meeting that work would be done within a week - two weeks at the most. We just had to organize to get all of the fixtures and tiles chosen and delivered during the initial days of the work. After arranging all of that, I requested a follow up meeting to make certain that we had a clear understanding of the work to be done. At this meeting, Mark informed that the fixtures had to be delivered before the start of the work - which created more than a bit of stress in getting TUBS to readjust the delivery schedule. By the way - Sil Cavaliere from TUBS was great - as was the discount available through their arrangement with the Home Improvement People. Work was under the direction of "Lino". During the project it became clear that what had been understood by Mark was not fully explained to Lino. Frustrating to say the least as it required multiple visits and discussions with Lino to clarify what had been agreed to with Mark. The Project took three weeks - as a result of asbestos found around some of the old pipes - that required expensive removal and time delay. Further frustrations came with purchasing tiles because the estimates of required tiles was understated twice - requiring additional trips by me to the tile store and getting them to the tiler. Additional frustrations: During the project, the fridge power was disconnected letting food rot; the key fob allowing entrance to the building was lost. In both cases, they accepted responsibility and reimbursement of costs. Suggestions for future users of "The Home Improvement People" 1. Pay very close attention to the description of work and estimate. General statements are not sufficient! Don't go ahead unless you are very clear about what is included and excluded under the estimate. Get copies of WSIB, insurance coverages and warranties. 2. Double the estimated time to complete. 3. Be clear up front who is in charge of the project and who you will be dealing with. If not the estimator, request to meet with the on job in charge person to go over the work to be done. 4. Check on the work every day! 5. Review the final invoice in detail - don't accept additional charges without fully understanding and agreeing to them.
First class professionalism from the first phone call to the last payment. It's difficult to believe that we used our old bathroom for so long. We love the transformation. Thank you to Gerhard and crew and thx to Haydee at the office. Hi again - this is my second time using HIP. I didnt realize how much we missed you guys. It was great to have you back. We finally saved up enough to finish built ins and flooring and it was worth every dollar. Its a pleasure dealing with your entire gang. All the best. MC
As advertised on the many Homestars reviews. We had a wonderful experience with Home Improvement People. We had a flooded basement from the bad rains in the summer. They were there for us from the very beginning. They worked with our insurance company to make sure we got everything we needed to get our basement back to the way it was before. Thank you Thank you.
A terrible experience due to double the length of the bathroom completion date with overbooking jobs, poor communication with owners, poor quality of tile work by by tradesmen, very rude and unprofessional comments about me by the owner when I told him my disappointments about the project.
This review is long overdue. We just used Home Improvement People for the second time. It went just as well. We not have renovated our basement and master bathroom using them. They were on time, clean, friendly and overall outstanding. Thank you to whole team.
I've read great things about this company and have contacted them on 3 separate occasions regarding a basement reno project. Each time I was told someone would get back to me 'within the day' and I never hear from them again. I guess they don't need a $30,000 project, business must be good. Disappointed in their lack of customer service but perhaps it's a sign it's for the best.
I heard great things about this company from a coworker who hired them to do her kitchen and then she rehired them to do the basement and bathroom. I called, and the friendly voice on the phone said I would get a call back the next day to book a quote. I did not receive a call so I called back and was told I would once again receive a call back the following day to book a quote. Surprise surprise I did not receive a call back yet again. It's now been almost 3 weeks and still nothing. If this is what's happening when I try to hire them, I certainly don't want to think about what's going to happen of I did hire them to do my $15k + bathroom renovation. Guess I will just just keep looking and give my money to a company that actually wants my business and referrals. Word of mouth and reputation is everything for a company. Good luck.
There seems to be a common theme (from other posts) with this company and am sure there have been a lot more people that have gone through this but have just not bothered to speak up. i had to call several times to inquire about getting a estimate for a fairly sizable home renovation. Each time i was told someone would call back and it never happened. Finally i was able to get a estimate date after several calls in (appointment was about 3 weeks out - fine). I was told it would take about a few days to get a quote after the meeting. It has now been 3 weeks gone by since the estimate meeting and we have heard zero from them. No calls, emails - nothing. Wow great way to start a potential working relationship with a new client - total waste of time and energy. Best take your business elsewhere from the start - there are lots of good contractors waiting for your dreams and money.
We reached out to the home improvement people for our bathroom renovation. Elia showed up and was both professional and pleasant. The pricing was as we were expecting which surprised us because our job included a designer and dedicated project manager. From the moment we hired HIP, Gerhard our PM and Charlotte our designer both exceeded expectation. The job started and was completed as promised and without any real setbacks. We would not hesitate to recommend HIP to anyone seriously thinking about a renovation.
