Jan loves wood. With that love comes care for the quality of work he does and a clear view to the potential of the job. Jan will do what the customer wants, but he will let you know his preference in a way that masks his passion. Over the days that Jan worked on restoring my oak hardwoods, he always kept me updated with progress and obstacles the same. As the day of finishing approached, I was won over by Jan's quiet preference for the natural look, thus avoiding what I now know would have been a horrible mistake to stain the floors in attempt to match the trim. Now I have floors that transformed the house, and complement the trim. I had buyers remorse with my property until the floors were done; then I immediately became proud of the house I had bought. Thanks to Jan, it turned out the right way. Jan also gave me other advice on other aspects of the house that I was struggling with, which was much appreciated. He even lent me an ozone machine to kill off mold spores that contributed to changing a smelly musty house into smelling normal, probably for the first time in decades. Thank you, Jan.

He had the hardwood floor pieces that matched my old flooring from the late 30s the size was: Width 1 3\4" thickness and it was 3\4 inch thick. It is impossible to make this review short but these are things you will want to know. As a first time homeowner of a 1948 North River Heights home, doing renovations and upgrades is daunting when you solely have "recommended" trades to hire and hope for the best. Throughout my large 3.5 month project, Jan (pronounced Yawn) was a "project saver" and we couldn't be happier. We had originally hired a gentleman through my contractor, who did a very very beautiful job laying hardwood in the kitchen, lacing it into my surrounding hardwood in the dining room. Unfortunately his schedule for sanding/finishing it and the rest of the main floor, ended up delayed by a few weeks which would have had a ripple effect on the rest of our project/move-in date. Jan was recommended to me by my co-worker and knowing we were in a pinch, he took over (he was doing our job within the week! Yet he was priced the same as our previous guy, with no upcharge for the rush). Jan is very knowledgeable. He arrived for the consultation/quote and went over all of my options in detail with me. When discussing stain colour he said he likes to make money just like the next guy, but our hardwood previously hidden by carpet was in great condition and he said to have such beautiful long strips of oak is rare and that there is really no need for stain as a gorgeous natural oak colour would be exposed. I chose to trust his word and he really does know what he is talking about; we couldn't be happier with the shade of our oak, it has so much depth and natural light/dark variation. As for how Jan works, he is fast, precise and disciplined. He had his equipment at our place the night before starting, and blue painters tape highlighting areas of the room to “mind” such as our quarts overhang on the kitchen peninsula, and the new range hood. We had a water stain about 10-12" in diameter on the living room floor that he said up front might not come out (although he believed it would). He came prepared with extra wood pieces in case the spot did not come out (if he would need to lace new wood in) and had it acclimating at our home while he was sanding the rest of the main floor. After the first level of sanding was complete he sent progress photos of each room as well as the water spot. After the second sanding, more photos and proof that the stain fully came out! For a total of 3 days that Jan and his team worked on my main floor, he was there long hours (7-7:30am to 5:45-6pm) and got the job done quickly but most importantly, as close to perfect as you can get. After completion he likes to have the job checked out, and of my entire main floor, I was only able to find one little 1 inch patch that needed a little more finish. Jan returned first thing in the morning (7am) to easily touch up. While he was at it, he added two more layers to my side door stairs, because they are fir, not oak, and he said naturally softer these two extra coats will help protect the stairs for my black lab dog. Keep in mind I only paid for 3 coats, this was completely an elective thing that Jan did on his own. He also responds within the hour to my many texts regarding questions of maintenance and care. He really goes above and beyond... I hope it's obvious my husband and I would recommend him! Photos shown are of my living room after, my dining room after, and my main floor bedroom after (ignore my unfinished baseboards). Photos posted twice and I cannot remove them.

I wish I could give Jan and Brandon 10 stars. I hired another company to refinish my floors because Jan was booked out 3 months (for good reason). The other company lied, was behind schedule, walked away from half the job, just a nightmare. I came home at 2am from a business trip expecting my floors to be 95% finished as promised. I walked into a disaster, my home covered in dust and unlivable. The sanding hadn't even been completed after 5 days. I called Jan at 9am on a Sunday desperate. He was at my home at 11am that morning and spent 2.5 hours reviewing what needed to be done, explaining every detail of what had been done and needed to be done to allow me to move back in to my home. I was fortunate a job he had scheduled was delayed. He committed to work with his helper Brandon 3 straight 14 hour days beginning the very next day so I could move back in. He and Brandon delivered to the letter. My floors were repaired and finished as he committed. Not only that he provided me with his specific knowledge to help me in resolving my conflict with the other flooring company that left me in the lurch. Jan and Brandon are craftsman who truly care about you, the customer. Honest, hard working, true to their word. My floors and stairs are beautiful. I have booked them in March of 2022 to put hardwood into my kitchen. They are well worth the wait. I have committed to Jan and Brandon to take them out for a bite to eat to show my gratitude for what they did for me in what I can only describe as a low point in my life and turned one of the worst experiences of my life into something positive. Jan is easy to talk too and his workmanship is excellent !! he clearly has a passion for his work . Our floors look absolutely amazing , the repairs of some areas look flawlessly like the original and friends have been commenting none stop about how good they look !! I like the fact the Jan is easy to talk to and has a sharp sense of humor , an added bonus is that if you have any coo coo clocks around!! Got a quote from a big box store and was "floored" at the proposed cost and poor customer service. Decided to call Jan for a quote for installation of engineered flooring. Jan went through the pro's and con's of different types of flooring. He provided a quote for hardwoods...installation and material cost with Yawn's Flooring were comparable with the big box stores LAMINATE flooring. Jan was very good at keep us informed and was transparent with pricing. The floor is stunning!!! And held firm to initial quote. Great work!!!!
