I operate a design and manufacturing business, so my work often finds me in dealings with CEO's as well as a plethora of small business owners. Lately, I've also found myself having dealings with multiple trades-people and trades-companies as I refurbish a 1959 house from top to bottom (and beyond). Canadian HAZ-MAT Environmental, its employees AND its owners, are by far some of the most professional, competent, compassionate and decent people I've ever dealt with, in ANY field. Dave and his team are exceptional at all that they do, and I would recommend them to both family and friends with 100% confidence. I think the best way to sum up my impressions of these amazing people is to say that they actually treat their customers as if WE were THEIR family or friends, and that quality is a rarity and a gift. One day, I mistakenly believed that a couple of workers had made a poor decision during their work on the house, and I became quite upset. The workers were upset too as in fact it DID appear they had indeed made a mistake. Dave showed up in 5 minutes, assessed the situation calmly and rapidly, and discovered that no mistake had been made at all...and he was right...and my apologies to him and his crew were graciously accepted without hesitation. Here's the text I sent him that evening, as this also sums up my feelings about this company: "You're just a great man, Dave, in our books. That wasn't in question for even a fleeting moment today prior to your arrival, and not surprisingly, your excellent presence and demeanour shone through once again when you came by (within minutes!). These people are superb. I dealt mostly with the owner Dave, and the workers Ariane and Jacob. Dave spent hours of his own time on weekends and evenings consulting with me over some vermiculite leaks in the ceiling of an old house. What could have been a stressful experience was defused by Dave's knowledgeable and practical approach. Their workers arrived to clean and seal the leaks, which I followed immediately with my own arranged carpentry. The workers (Ariane and Jacob) were the kind of people who could be successful in any industry, given their can-do attitude and people skills. They were flexible in their dealings with my arranged carpentry work, which was great. Jacob got the areas cleaned and sealed so efficiently! Ariane also did this efficiently, and was absolutely masterful with a caulking gun- she applied at least 100 lineal feet of caulking in difficult areas in hardly any time, with the results as neat as a pin. In fact it was so good that it looked like the caulking was part of the original house (and I've seen some very messy caulking beads done by other companies!). Together these 2 absolute pros finished the job in a single day. Kyle kept the team well-supported, and Jenn in the office scheduled it all, including the unmarked vehicle that I had requested. We got the all-clear by an air quality test from AREC the next day, and now we don't have to worry about this situation anymore. Eventually, we will have all of the vermiculite removed when it comes closer to a time to sell this house. We won't hesitate to use this team again. Bravo again to everyone involved. Dave, and the entire team- you guys rock!

Canadian Haz-Mat did an abatement of drywall in our kitchen. They were very professional, worked very hard address any concerns I had, and also were reasonably priced. They took an extra step to save some new insulation we just put in the ceiling - we really appreciated that. There was a small issue with some floor damage but it was rectified right away. I would use them again. Their onsite team was also on-point and was very nice.

The asbestos industry can be incredibly overwhelming. Some of the bigger companies providing these services rely on fear-mongering and intimidation, producing client reports that make it sound like you have to remediate everything or tear down your house in order to feel ‘safe’. Do your due diligence (or keep reading this review) to get it straight once and for all. I purchased a house in Victoria. Anyone who knows Victoria knows that there is asbestos in almost every house. This is not a problem (and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise) unless you ‘disturb’ the asbestos. In my case, I was disturbing the asbestos because I was renovating the kitchen and bathrooms. The first essential step, when you know you will need to disturb asbestos, is to have an asbestos survey done. This is essentially hiring an asbestos company that will come out and test random areas of the house, to produce a report that identifies where the asbestos is, what kind of asbestos it is and what the protocol for handling the asbestos is, for contractors and homeowners involved. The report also details other items, such as lead paint, mercury, vermiculite (they may charge extra for those samples). Samples add up quite quickly. I was originally quoted 5-7 samples and they walked out with 21, so keep an eye on scope here. I should also note that the company that I chose to do my sampling (Hazpro) was not the same company I chose to do the remediation (Canadian Haz-Mat Environmental). Canadian Haz-Mat Environmental is a fairly new company. After calling several larger companies to get quotes and timelines for remediation, some repeatedly warned me to stay away from this smaller shop, due to their inexperience, implying they are “probably not certified” and there must be a reason that they are “not busy like we are”. Due to these comments, I conducted further due diligence, contacting Work Safe BC to ensure they were indeed registered (and they were). Because of the negative commentary, I lost respect for these larger firms, who were attempting to monopolize the industry by tearing down the competition by using several scare tactics, indicating I ‘absolutely had to’ remediate the entire house (+10k$ of work) and not to trust these smaller companies as their companies employed better expertise (“we’ve been doing this for years and we’ve never heard of these guys”). These larger companies started off by having clients (like me) give them the opportunity to prove they are capable and competent. So I decided to entrust Canadian Haz-Mat Environmental with my project, and was I ever fortunate. To start, they were ready to begin immediately, while others were 3-4 weeks out. They did not rely on intimidation techniques, and they did not want to add to my initial scope of work. They understood what I needed to do for my project, and made suggestions on how to save money with their protocol. They took the time to explain every small detail for each question I brought up – and I brought up many. They were incredibly accommodating, allowing the ability for me to add to scope as they progressed, based on my plumber’s needs. They were professional, affordable and honest people. I would highly recommend going to Canadian Haz-Mat Environmental for your needs and skip the ‘big-box’ types. This boutique shop can do everything with integrity, and honesty.

It’s unfortunate but as an old person, and a woman, I have at times experienced a lack of respect and a propensity towards dishonesty amongst certain tradespeople.
