The renovation turned out spectacular and the organization, processes and overall experience I had working with Slotegraaf was fantastic. I could not be more pleased. After interviewing several other contractors, we decided to hire Slotegraaf to complete an addition to our side split. We could not have been happier with our choice! From the design process to the final finishings, their team was very attentive, skilled and patient. They even completed the renovation on time despite us adding additional projects (which to me is a miracle considering all of the reno horror stories!). When you work with Slotegraaf you are assigned a Customer Care Rep who is there throughout your entire renovation to support, communication and take care of any issues if and when they arise (let’s be honest – no matter how great the company is there will be issues – we are talking construction, and something always happens. For us it was an existing plumbing issue). All of our neighbours are still praising the construction team’s efficiency and professionalism – months later! You can definitely trust this company and we would suggest that anyone doing a renovation use Slotegraaf!

If you're thinking of doing a reno, do not use Slotegraaf Construction. We had a terrible experience with Slotegraaf and we want to help others avoid a similar situation. After almost two years of planning our lives for around a reno, saving money, budgeting, signing a contract with them, making selections, Slotegraaf just canceled our project right before the planned start date. From what it looks like they dropped us so that they could chase more money on another project and they're using the reno craze as an opportunity to price gouge customers. Before the project, we thoroughly vetted Slotegraaf, checked references, obtained multiple contractors' quotes to compare them, signed our contract, and paid our deposit 8 months in advance. When they canceled on us, they didn't even give us the courtesy of calling us to explain, they just emailed us nonchalantly. From the vetting we did, it looks like at one time Slotegraaf used to be one of the good companies in the industry. We read the good reviews you're probably reading as well. Now it looks like they've taken a turn and become one of the bad ones. Here are more details of what happened: 1. Slotegraaf misled us when they told us that our project price and start date would be "locked-in" if we signed a contract with them and sent them a deposit. However, as the project was a month away from starting they then told us that the price is going up. We didn't make any scope changes on the project so price change was puzzling to us. 2. Slotegraaf wanted to raise the price of our project by $54K - a blind increase - because "sub-trade costs" have gone up. We realize that materials and sub-trade costs can fluctuate, all we wanted was for Slotegraaf to show us how they arrived at the $54K number. Instead of having an honest and reasonable conversation about the price increase, they ignored our request and canceled the project on us. This makes us feel that they were just trying to take advantage of us because they knew we couldn't easily switch to another reno company while they could easily replace us with a higher-paying project. 3.Slotegraaf uses closed-book pricing which is difficult to work with. It seems like they've got something to hide when it comes to pricing and it makes conversations about price changes difficult to have. I suggest to anyone doing a reno to work with companies that are willing to be open book and transparent on their pricing. After Slotegraaf canceled, we got our job repriced, and 4 out of the 5 companies we spoke to used open book pricing. It looks like open-book pricing is more the norm than the exception. 5. In the cancelation letter, Slotegraaf cited "scheduling conflicts" as the reason for the cancelation. This made no sense to us because we had no prior indication that scheduling was an issue. We gave them ample advance commitment on our project. Even if scheduling was an issue, why didn't they give us a chance to reschedule? 6. Then Slotegraaf changed their story in a response to our Facebook review of them. They said they canceled to "prevent more serious consequences during the course of construction". Which one is it Slotegraaf? Scheduling conflicts or serious consequences? At no point did Slotegraaf let us know of any serious consequences during our project planning process. In fact, we've had other contractors look at our project since they canceled and these contractors said it's a straightforward reno. 7. Making matters worse, Slotegraaf did not make it easy for us to get our full deposit back. We had to get our lawyer involved in order to get our deposit back. Our experience with Slotegraaf was so significantly bad The Record did an article on it (pic attached). There's no sense risking it, this situation could happen to you. Use a different company for your home reno. Save yourself from a nightmare and don't use Slotegraaf.

Slotegraaf did a major renovation for us in 2020. We were so pleased with the work they did we had them back for a smaller renovation in 2021. They are very organized which made the renovations go smoothly. The staff worked with us to incorporate a custom barn door style mirror into the design in our ensuite (see photo). During a basement renovation, my wife and I noticed that 2 of our foundation walls had a 1 inch crack all throughout. We called Slotegraaf and the owner Dave came out to see it personally! Not many companies have the owner hands on! He was so professional, looked at the problem, came up with a solution on site and put the wheels in motion. Had to put my house on stilts, knock out my cinderblock foundation and formed and poured a new concrete foundation with updated egress windows. They were super busy, but he fit us in because this was a serious issue for our home. Can't say enough good things about this company. If your looking for a trustworthy company, this is it!!!

After we provided extensive information on our renovation project starting in early November 2020 (via the online form, email as information was requested and telephone conversations) and patiently waiting for FIVE months for a project manager to visit (with some appointment cancelations from Slotegraaf in between), we received a "this project is not quite suited for Slotegraaf" email at the end of March prior to the scheduled project manager visit to our home on April 7th. No explanation was provided on why Slotegraaf feels like it's okay to mislead a prospective client and drag them along for so long. Whether the timing of the decision was based on inefficiency in their internal communication process, or just putting aside smaller projects in favor of larger projects, it feels very disingenuous, and it's no way for a trustworthy company to conduct itself.
