My older brother Mike, would always use Northern Protocol if and when any of his computers, where being stubborn, Mike swore by their Honestly and great knowledge of his wares. My brother funny enough, built & programed Automated Robots for the Automobile industry, but never wanted to learn the fixing or building of the tools (computer) he used to on a daily basis, no different than a mechanic fixing his diagnosis equipment. I only mentioned it because Mike if anyone would be able to pick out a dishonest person, and that's the furthest that Northern Protocol is, they are Very Honest, hardworking, plesent, as they can be. I have now purchased 2 computers from Northern Protocol, and have had several experiences when I've had to call on them to trouble shoot issues and provide general assistance. A few things have struck me: First: They never make me feel like I'm unintelligent. I don't know a lot of computer "lingo," and so the desk staff and technicians always explain things to me in a way that I can understand. Second: They are always straightforward and sincere. They never beat around the bush. If there was a genuine problem, they would tell me, and I never felt like I was being up-sold. Very quickly, they earned my trust. They really want to figure out the problem. Third: They are competitively priced. In fact, I often walk away thinking, Shouldn't I have paid more for that? Last: They are super-accessible. Do you ever think, 'Man, I wish I could call someone and talk to an actual human to help me fix this problem?' Me too. And that's what you get at Northern Protocol. Went in to get a data transfer from hard drives that I have save over the years, I brought in a functioning external drive and a computer tower. Was told that my tower was old tech and needed replacing (not sure but I think it was 7 years old). Also told that only 4 of the 7 hard drives were functional. They tore the external apart and told me that the data was not accessible. I ended up buying a new tower and spending WAY too much for what they did and the tech recommended. They even kept my old tower also.....I successfully retrieved ALL my data... Never again, will I use or recommend the services of Northern Protocol. Save your money and go somewhere else! UPDATE: Since I place the less than satisfactory service received from Northern Protocol. The owner called me twice and also called my employer twice in attempts to get me in trouble because of the sensitivity of the possible images and documents on the drives “there were none”. In my initial post I said that I brought my hard drives to another computer store, my mistake I did it myself and following threat of legal action against me from the owner I removed that comment. My apologies if I lead anyone astray. Like you Aaron, in my line of work we record all our phone calls. But we do not use them to threaten legal action against a customer that complain about our services.

I had been a customer for over a year now.. and I had exceptional service. The first time I was not even charged because my mac book would have been too expensive to repair. They recommended I just go out buy another one rather than waste my money. The second time I brought in my imac which needed a new superdrive they tried to get me one the quickest way they could. However, when I received it back I had problems with it. They picked it up from my own home! When I finally got it repaired which took some time,( although it was not there fault for the wait ). Yet again they made it right-- the owner called being very apologetic and gave me a store discount because of the inconveniences... THANK-YOU NORTHERN PROTOCOL !!!!

brought my laptop computer with a hinge problem, and got it back with broken monitor and they said "While we exercise every precaution and due diligence when servicing your computer it is possible for failure to occur during servicing. We cannot accept responsibility for failures of hardware or software, including loss of data or usage, however caused." "if you have not retrieved your computer you may now do so free of charge." They wanted me to pay 'MONITOR which they broke + HINGE" and that's why I refused to pay all of them. I definitely had to pay for hinge but not monitor. * Be careful and should take a picture before bring your computer to Northern Protocol Computer or you'll be deceived like me. Didn't even tell me sorry. Should I thank for "free of charge?"

Recently, I have had the opportunity to work with Aaron directly in developing my website. My experience with Aaron was very pleasant and positive. Aaron was very patient and accommodating. A lot of patience was required, as I was very new to the the experience of developing a website. Aaron was very professional and talented in producing the work for my website. We had many conversations and changes, all of which Aaron did professionally and patiently. He was very knowledgeable and creative, things much needed when working with people who are new to this experience and people who may not be as creative. Further, when asked to make changes that were challenging, he took on the challenge without resistance and made it happen. Added to the above was the fact that the cost was affordable and reasonable. Excellent customer service. Brought in 2 laptop computers, one was a simple repair and the second had a few finicky details to work out. Spoke to the technician directly for an explanation (am not a computer person) and they explained all the work and invoice details very thoroughly. Aaron and his team are dedicated to customer service along with honest, helpful and prompt communication. I brought my laptop in for a screen replacement and tune-up and it was promptly done. Even when the screen they installed came with one faulty pixel, they promptly contacted their supplier and it was replaced again, no questions asked. Wanted to charge two and a half hours labour at $120 to install a $7 piece (which I bought myself) which would take 15 minutes to complete. Overcharging people on the basis that they think their customers do not know computers is both unprofessional and crooked. Pricing needs reviewed badly. Edit: That being said they did let me use their equiptment to try myself but without a solder pump I ws unable to do so. In response: Well you can step up and tell the truth if you want to. If your responding from the Alliston location then you may wish to check your cameras at the Barrie location and you'll see me enter the back area and attempt the fix myself. Lying gets a business no-where. I would also like a public apology. Update: Still no response to checking tbe cameras which would prove I am right, but alas, liars will hide from the truth.

Staff seem knowledgeable and capable in terms of repair. However if you need a component of your computer replaced, make sure that you do your research on whatever replacement part they recommend to determine if it is right for you. Somewhere on the team there is a problem with expectations management. I brought my old gaming rig in because it had a suspected graphics card problem as well as some boot issues. I originally had a Powercolor HD 7970 3GB 3GDDR5 graphics card from 2013 in the computer but it had finally failed after 8 years of service. This card could handle most games I play like War Thunder and Rocket League at High - Ultra settings without breaking a sweat. The contact person at Northern Protocol told me that powerful graphics cards are hard to come by right now but they could get me a card that was nearly as powerful in a decent amount of time (2 weeks). I'm not up-to-date on modern GPUs so that seemed okay to me and I left it at that. After all, what's a few less frames when games were already running so smoothly before? I got the computer back with a GeForce GT 710 as the replacement graphics card. If you're not already laughing, do a quick google search on that component name. The difference is night and day. At the end of the day my computer is working again and I can access my files and browse the web perfectly fine, which are the necessary purposes for my computer. Their markup on the GT 710 wasn't too bad and the card will make for a handy backup card in the future if I have another GPU failure. However, games I used to play seamlessly on High or Ultra settings now are choppy on Low. I will need to buy another graphics card to get things back to the way they used to be. Either the staff did not know that the components were so far apart in capability, or they need to work on setting realistic expectations for customers. Update: I left this review on a Thursday evening and Northern Protocol reached out Friday afternoon to discuss my recent experience. I believe I was speaking to the owner Aaron Weston, who was very understanding and great to chat with. I've updated this review from 3 stars to 4 because of his courtesy and professionalism, and next time I need computer service or if I decide to build a new rig I'm sure I'll be back.

I brought my laptop into NP for a graphics issue. During the testing they discovered the SSD in my laptop was failing their test (running slow). Luckily under manufacturers warranty still. I brought a drive in to transfer data to and as it turns out it wasn't large enough. There was a miscommunication at the store and I didn't get a call to let me know the issue. I was compensated then and there for the issue. Not only that, the owner of the company personally called me to make sure I was satisfied with the resolution. Customer service is alive and well with Northern Protocol! I highly recommend Aaron and his team to look after your computer needs.

The work these guys do is simply amazing. This is now the 3rd time I've used their services and could not be happier. They have replaced my trackpad on my macbook twice (due to my own fault), both times with zero issues. Recently I did quite a bit of damage to my macbook by dropping it about 4 feet. After the drop, I started noticing issues right away, so I brought it in to Northern Protocol. Their staff was able to do a hardware diagnostic and found that my hard drive was damaged. They replaced my Macs hard drive with a SSD drive, transferred all my files from my old hard drive to the new SSD, and were even able to get my old operating system back on it (haven't updated my operating system in a few years due to compatibility issues with programs I use). Simply amazing work, fair pricing, and within 3 business days I had my macbook back in my possession with all my files restored. Thank you very much to the entire team at Northern Protocol. I look forward to doing business with these guys again in the future.

They're friendly, professional and reasonable when they do charge for service (and they've done a number of tasks on my laptop, which I bought off-lease from them) for absolutely no charge. If you need service on your computer, there's no need to look anywhere else... Aaron and his team are top-notch.

I originally gave this company a three-star review, but then the owner called me while I was at work, pressured me into talking about why I wanted to "make (him) look bad on the internet", and then proceeded to call both my cell phone and my house many times that night. When I called there originally I stated that I knew the issue was the SATA cable, and the representative told me it would be an "easy job. 3-5 days, and a $45 diagnostics fee." In total, the price of the repair job came to $157.07 and took over two weeks.

I purchased a computer from here. A month later, it was crashing and getting the blue screen. I gave them a call. I was told that I would have to bring it back and leave it for a min of 3 days. They would then let me know if there would be extra charges (if it was a software issue). I did my own research and did find it was a firefox issue. I took the crash file and figured it out. This is something someone could have walked me through. I rely on my computer and 3+ days to troubleshoot is way too long for me to be without a computer. The woman told me that is just the way it is. Not good for a business.

I met Aaron Weston of Northern Protocol about seven years ago while working as the promotions consultant for a medical facility. A great experience from the friendly greetings each time I'd walk-in to the simple explanation of what was going on with my PC. They offered alternative solutions to the problem, with pros and cons of each, which made the decision simple. They did not push the most expensive options, and I found the pricing quite reasonable compared to past experiences with others. Its nice to see the time taken to keep inside of my PC neat and tidy as well as the external add ons match,(unlike past experiences with others). If you want to go with JoeK computers out of their garage cause they're a little cheaper you will get what you pay for. Cheapness. Made that mistake before. Then when problem persists in a few months, try Northern Protocol they'll fix it properly. Definitely a repeat customer.

I've dealt with NPC from business and personal perspectives. In both cases they've been professional, prompt and courteous. Staff is always friendly and ready to answer questions. I didn't find that anytime I went there was a huge wait, which is nice (Barrie Location). I typical use them for things beyond my capabilities since I can manage the basics myself. Last time I brought my personal computer in, then cleaned it all out while doing their inspection which was nice to see.

I recently purchased a new gaming PC here. They were very helpful and knowledgeable when helping me pick and choose different parts that would fit my needs. After seeing the build, I was glad I left it to the professionals. The build looked amazing, very organized and great use of RGB.Performance wise it is far better than I had expected and at a reasonable price. Even after my purchase, I've asked numerous PC related questions that honestly they didn't have to answer but they did and were very accommodating. I would definitely recommend and will be coming back in the future. If you are an average PC user, save yourself the headache and let the professionals do what they do best.

I want everyone to know what a GREAT experience I had at Northern Protocol. From that first great welcoming smile of Amy's, I felt confident my computer problems would be solved. She went through everything I wanted done and assured me it would be done in a proficient timely manner. I called back with further requests and spoke to Cory who was working on my laptop. He assured me I would get what I wanted. Boy, was he right. The service was beyond what I expected and I was able to pick up the laptop the next day. Amy showed me how to do a few new functions I requested and then I paid the invoice which was extremely fair for what I had done and I was off. Bravo Amy and Cory!!!

I decided to take in my 10 + year old g74sx laptop in for repair after experiencing some power issues. Going in, I already had a pretty good idea that it may be either the power jack or the power adapter, I just needed confirmation before I went ahead and ordered an OEM power supply. I explained this to them online when I booked my appointment and in person. Despite giving them a detailed explanation, the receptionist goes ahead and talks to the tech in the back (while he’s on the phone), and without taking a second glance immediately suggests it’s the battery and it needs to be replaced. The laptop is 10 years old, of course the battery isn’t optimal anymore but I knew it wasn’t the battery. Anyways, I didn’t feel too comfortable after that but I didn’t want to be too quick to judge, so against my better judgment I left it and was charged a $50 bench fee. It took them 5 days to finally diagnose the problem which was indeed the power jack (big surprise) that needed replacement. It came down to $160 parts and labour AND $50 dollars for the bench fee. As I thought the price was too steep, I immediately started to look for quotes from other shops and was able to get a direct quote for $90 parts and labour over the phone. Not only that, the tech knew exactly the issue with my ASUS ROG g74sx and was able to explain in detail the problem and fix. I’ll be paying the $50 bench fee to Northern Protocol and taking my laptop else where. I don’t care if it costs me double to fix it, I just can’t stand the lack of professionalism in this place. Update: I’m changing my review from a 1 to 4 after I got in contact with Aaron the owner. Was a pleasant person to talk to, very understanding of the situation and was able to find a solution. Will be coming back for future repairs.

When I decided to build myself an expensive gaming computer, I had to do a lot of research on the parts I needed to get the performance I desired for the streaming and many games I play. With the help of the people at Northern Protocol, I learned much more about the parts in question. They explained the depth of the specs of each item, and discussed price options that fit within my budget. A gentleman named John took charge of assembling my computer once I had ordered all of the parts, and I have to admit that I am overly satisfied! The organization of all of the cables was flawless, everything worked cleanly as expected, and the technical support he provided was great! He seemed almost as excited as I was to have it built :). When I encountered a software problem that I didn't understand about activating my second hard drive, I gave them a ring and they answered and addressed my issue as quickly as they could, and it was shortly resolved over the phone with much professionalism. There front desk customer service is also something I really valued, in addition to their computer knowledge and service expertise. Northern Protocol is a Barrie based company, and if your in the area, I highly recommend going to them with any computer inquiries. Being a small company that they are, it seems that they really value their individual customers and rely on local advertising/word of mouth for their business. The staff they have on hand seem to all be very rehearsed in their respective computer fields, and are also very friendly and informative to customers. I believe they are a much better option than the big named companies like Best Buy or Future Shop. Friendly small town customer service goes a long way, and I am very glad to have discovered Northern Protocol. All in all, Aaron Weston is running a great business, with good staffing and computer expertise to answer any purchasing, troubleshooting or general questions one may have. And lastly as a result, I have one BEAST of a computer!!! Thanks Northern Protocol

I've always been able to troubleshoot my computers on my own, but last year I finally ran into an issue I couldn't resolve. Northern Protocol was able to find the issue and retrieve all of my data. The process took a number of days and I was pleasantly surprised that NP would call every couple of days with an update on their progress so I wasn't kept in the dark about how it was going.

I went in for a laptop repair and ended up leaving with a new computer due to the old one being beyond fixing, and the staff made the overall experience pleasant despite the bummer of losing my files and having to spend cash. Helpful and friendly every step of the way, 100% would recommend! Edit: I just went back after a year with a few factory and performance issues with my computer. I cannot express how highly I would recommend this location, always on the side of the customer and providing above and beyond service. If there was a 6th star I'd hit it. They really know the full scope! They also have great personalities and keep it simple for us to understand and easy to function. What I respect is they completed the work! I made a post a few weeks ago and i just want a response i sent my pc in to get looked at because it was stuttering. They where nice over the phone took a week for them to do what they needed to do but they told me is was a os issue causing the problems but in truth it wasnt because when i got my pc back it was the same and also on top of them charging me the 100 dollars for the new os installation they didnt even properly reformat my other drive which i thought they would know. I have proof of payment for sending my pc in im just not happy with the end result that my pc is the same as when i took it in. I brought the pc in april 4th 2020 and if i could get some feedback of what you guys even looked at and did that would be nice because paying 150 dollars and nothing changed is really annoying.
