I have an Macbook Pro 2012 and I had this black screen and rebooting issue with my laptop. I have been turned down by Apple store because my laptop is old and out of their support. I found Hackery in Google and trusted them based on Google reviews. They offered free diagnostics and apparently while they were diagnosing my laptop, it fixed the rebooting problem spontaneously. I don't know what they've done but I'm very satisfied with them. They didn't even charge me. Thank you Hackery!!!

I came in here looking for an i key to fix a computer I'd borrowed from a friend. When I took the computer out of the laptop case, it turned out that the lithium-ion battery had exploded sometime when I wasn't using it. Nerve-wracking! But the guy who was there explained the whole thing to me - how to ask Apple if it was still under warranty, an estimated price for a new battery if I had to buy one, and even to stay away from anything but an Apple seller for a new battery since the others last only 6 months. He was super knowledgeable about the whole thing and not even a tiny bit condescending. And he fixed the i key after all that - for free even.

Can't say how great this place is! After finally retrieving my high end desktop computer from the bankrupt NCIX and it still wasn't working I took it to the Hackery. Within a few days they pinned it down to a bad CPU which was still under warranty. I got the replacement from Intel and the guys at the Hackery put it in. I was expecting about $100 in labor and they charged me $0! These guys are sooo honest! Rare to find these days.

I cannot say enough about how wonderful the service is at the Hackery. Went to the Apple Store with an 8-month old MacBook because the charging cable was shorting out. Was told me I had water damage in the charging port. First repair estimate was $350, which was to replace the charging port...no luck . The second repair estimate from my 'genius' was $1100 and two weeks to replace the entire logic board because the whole system was dead. I said, "Thanks but no thanks" and put my computer away in a drawer, never to see the light of day again. 6 months later, I took it to the Hackery after reading some positive reviews. After letting me bring my bike inside and allowing me to pet the little dog in a sweater, they estimated me a $180 repair bill and 3-5 days turnaround time. When they called me two days later, I was told they simply ran some diagnostics on the battery, the charging port was fine, and charged me ZERO dollars to fix it because they didn't really have to do any work on it. It has been running great for the past week, with no issues. I'm so grateful that other folks had shared their positive experiences and brought me here. Truly appreciate the work that the folks at the Hackery did, and their friendly, helpful, unpretentious attitudes.

These guys came highly rated, both on line and from a few reputable retailers. Despite all of this, they put a large 10cm scratch across the front of my 27" imac, while upgrading me to an SSD. I contacted the hackery to let them know about the scratch. They have since gotten in touch and have agreed to repair or replace the screen.

This place is extraordinary. I have a Lenovo yoga 2 pro which shuts down frequently just after starting up. I reinstalled windows, which didn't fix the problem. Harddrive testing softwares and RAM testings cause shutting down. Lenovo authorized service centre said both my CPU and RAM are damaged and it takes about $1500 to replace the motherboard( with CPU and RAM builtin). I thought I will just leave the computer in trash can and rather buy a new one for even less. Just before that, I googled local computer repair shops for whatever reason I don't know, and came across with this highly rated place. I called them and talked about my problem and was told that they've never seen a yoga with both CPU and RAM damaged. I then brought the computer to them, and get it back after 3 days. It turns out both the CPU and RAM were good, but just the cooling silicone pad is dried out after 4 years use. They cleaned the inside of the computer, replaced the cooling pad and my computer is back alive. They only charged me $60. Only 60 dollars! Take home message: come to the Hackery with any computer problems without hesitation!

The staff are super friendly here! They diagnose the problems in your computer for free but you still have to pay for replacements parts (if you choose to) and depending on how hard the labor is - they might charge you more or less than $90. If it's a very simple reinstallation of a component, it's unlikely you'd get charged for the labor. The time it took for them to repair my device was very reasonable - quick even, and I'll gladly come back in if I ever need anything fixed!

Very poor service. They haven't returned the laptop in which condition I had handed over. Hard disk was on lid attached with tap and back lid was broken. Screw is missing. If you can't fix it, you are least responsible for returning in the condition you have received.

The Hackery found all of our missing important financial statements and gave us a non profit discount. Went to fix my laptop monitor problem, they ordered the wrong cable for it but somehow monitor managed to fix himself. Thought it would be a bit of a hassle, but they just gave it back to me with no extra charge. I hope it was just a cable connection problem, but even if it goes down later on I would definitely return here to get it fixed.

Computer was fixed in part. There was some difficulties that ended up meaning not everything was fixed as well as they said. When I couldn't use things they said were fixed at the store but didn't work at home they said they would make it right but it seemed to be made worse and although they gave some money back it was with consequences. Rather than trying to fix it or explaining they couldn't make it any better they took out the good battery they had put in initially and left the screws loose on the back of the laptop when I came back to get help. This made me even more worried. It was a stressful, unfortunate and disappointing experience.

Although they were unable to help with my laptop issues, (& didn't seem particularly interested in doing so, even if they could), they're very knowledgeable & good at what they do. They've helped numerous friends of mine sort out laptop/PC problems. However, they are generally very busy. So if you need to leave something with them to be repaired, it's unlikely you'll get it back right away, because they have so much other work they're doing. The pricing is totally reasonable & they go over everything with you beforehand. The shop itself is very cluttered & somewhat chaotic looking & the parking is utterly atrocious; but if you've got some sort of computer issue that you can't figure out, these guys really are the best. I took away 2 stars because there was a little bit of rudeness with one of the people I spoke with, the length of time repairs take, the messy appearance of the store & the issues around parking. But specifically for the work they do, they absolutely get 5 stars. Unfortunately I can't rate on individual aspects though.

I feel completely comfortable leaving my computers with them, knowing they will be in good hands. This place is the best! I find that most computer stores you walk into in vancouver just find a way to disregard the need to give any computer advice unless you feel that you have to sell your first born in order to pay for it, and wait a week and a half. This is the second time I have been to the hackney for what has seemed like another completely disastrous and frightening computer problem. The front desk employee was quick to offer non-intimidating PC advice, troubleshooting, and cheap fix.

What a great store aye, brought my laptop in on Sep 3, explained that there are two problems. One( the biggest) being that every time I tried to restart the device it stuck at the logo menu, and seconds problem is the fan, because it’s really loud and sounds like there’s dust in it. Told me it will be done in roughly 5 ~10 business days, Great, walked out of the store feeling good. A week later, I haven’t get any notification from them so I called to check the status. Oh, they told me that the fan needs to be replace because it’s not possible to clean, but everything else is good. I said ok, and how long is that gonna take? They answered its going to be between 1 to 2 weeks. I thought that’s very ridiculous but I didn’t want to pick up a laptop that doesn’t have a fan working. So I said ok I will wait. 2 weeks later, they called me to pick up the device. I was very excited because it takes almost a entire month. Got to the store and going to pay, however! They told me that the technician didn’t change the hard drive because they run some “test” and think the pc is good. So they didn’t end up doing anything to the hard drive but only replace a new fan. I wasn’t too sure about that reply but I decided to trust, trust the technician and trust this highly rated store I randomly found on google. Got home and turn on my laptop and decided to tried to restart the computer see if they fix the biggest problem. Guess what?! Nope, it still gets stuck at the logo menu, wow so it literally takes almost an entire month for them to replace a single fan, and told me that the technician were happy about the laptop because they “think” it runs fine. So, conclusion, if anyone would like to spend your entire month waiting and waste money on replace a single fan. And even get lied about “your laptop runs fine” which really means “ we didn’t do anything, didn’t tried to figure out what the most important problem is about the pc in that entire month, we’ve only replace a fan and charge me 100 dollars. If you would like that. I highly recommend you visit this store. ????

Honest and impeccable service, never a fee for estimates (regardless of how deep they go to diagnosis an issue), and reliable economically alternative solutions to hardware issues. If they fixed automobiles as well, i'd take my car to them every time. Tops!

I LOVE THE HACKERY! So glad I found this place. I know better than to not back up my stuff and sure enough I turned my computer on and it was not able to start properly. Researched for storefront computer repair place near me and only found a couple. Both had old, not up to date websites. Picked the one that was less old. Drove there and there were not open. Looked like they hadn't been for awhile. In desperation I took it to the Geek Squad. $60 to diagnose it as a hard drive failure. Would be $100 to retrieve my data (no guarantee) and said they would have to send it away for the repair and it would be 2 to 3 weeks and another hundred and something dollars. Then I found The Hackery online. Love that they are all about repairing and recycling and are active in their community. Their website states "free diagnosis and affordable repair." and "if we can't repair it, we won't charge you!" It was just $140 to replace my hard drive, move my data over to it and a fresh install of windows. I highly recommend them for all the reasons I mentioned before and because they are half the price of most other places. So if you are looking for parts, repair, diagnosis, recycling go to The Hackery! One little note, it is their practice to replace hard drives with a 500 gig drive. If you had a larger drive make sure you tell them know you want a larger drive.

I have had consistently great service at The Hackery. They were able to clean out one my laptop's fan in one afternoon for a very reasonable price. On another occasion they recovered data off my irretrievably damaged Macbook for me and since I offered them the laptop for parts, they didn't charge me for the service. Going to the shop is fun as well as worthwhile: there's a display of old Apples and an interesting array of electronic oddities, so if there's a bit of a wait at the counter (and I've never had to wait longer than 5 minutes), there may be something on the shelves to entertain you.

Dropped off a desktop computer Friday, motherboard wasn't powering up. I was clear about the problem, and was happy to have them replace it as needed. 3 business days later (Wednesday), I received an email about HDD problems (that I didn't care about), and was informed (by phone) that they hadn't gotten to the motherboard yet. My favourite part of the email is where the technician stated "Everything else seems to be in working condition". After asking that they redirect their focus to the motherboard, I received an email a couple hours later claiming that there was liquid damage to the board and that it was beyond repair (so... Not in working condition then?). No offer to replace the motherboard, just "it's ready for pick-up". What a complete waste of time and money (getting the desktop to and from). I strongly recommend against this place.

I took my Macbook Pro (13 inch, mid-2015) into the Apple store when it began restarting every time it booted up. They poked it, prodded it, and ran their diagnostic software on it, then determined it was one broken memory chip. $600 to replace the whole logic board. Six. Hundred. Canadian. Dollars. To fix one memory chip. I believed them, but wondered whether the Hackery could do it cheaper. They told me that they'd rather do their own diagnostics first and find out if Apple was right with their diagnosis. Within 3 days they'd told me they thought it was simply overheating, and how they could fix it. I said OK. A couple of days later, they'd fixed it, rigorously tested it, and handed it back to me in better shape than it's been in years. The cost? $90. The Hackery, thank you for postponing my need to buy a new mac by, probably, a couple of years. In case anybody is interested, the problem was with the thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink. I didn't know that this could dry out so quickly but apparently it can. If your mac is "randomly" rebooting, it could be overheating. And if it's overheating, this could be why. Don't just go with Apple's diagnosis. The geniuses at the bar may mean well, but they are not experts. Again, The Hackery is great. I'd have happily paid twice what they charged me.

I've only been here twice, but the experience was overwhelmingly positive. My venerable MacBookPro (mid 2010) had a failed battery, and after a short consultation in-store and subsequent wait of a little over a week, I received a call indicating it was ready for pickup -- good as new! Cost for parts and labor was very reasonable as well. If you need a pc or laptop fixed, or a good deal on some used low-cost components, I'd give these folks a shot. An easy recommendation.

Just wow! I had water damage on my Mac Book and came here for a second oppinion, after the apple store wanted me to pay 1350$ for various replacements. I wasn't too sure at first, but the excellent ratings convinced me to come here. And thank god i did! The staff is super friendly and you immediately feel that they are extremely competent as well. There are a few shops around Van like this with parts and rebuilt computers. This place is superior to all the others though, in terms of both knowledge and products. And more importantly, they stand behind their work. I bought a refurbished laptop here, and when it didn't work properly (actually more likely due to the operating program I downloaded not being compatible, not them)-- they nevertheless guaranteed their product and tried to fix it... There were still issues, but time was pressing for my work, so they exchanged it for a different laptop for me! This is something the other shops are NOT doing...these guys really go above and beyond, many thanks! Definitely recommend them to everyone!!

They have free diagnostics, which means you can take in your broken computer, drop it off, and they'll inspect it and see if they can fix it -- and if they can, they'll call you, you'll authorize the repair, THEN they'll repair it (and I think as long as it's not liquid damage they don't charge you unless it's repaired?) I brought in a 2013 macbook pro that I'd spilled water on 8 months ago, which was slowly using function in the keyboard and having weird power issues. The apple store quoted $800+ for the repair because they found logic board damage, so I gave up on repairing it -- but the Hackery did a chemical wash on it and the keyboard and power input finally work perfect again?! (I'm still in awe about it!) All for only about $150. Plus, after a day's usage the power input started failing again, so I called them and they asked me to bring it right back in, and that further repairs would be covered by warranty. Using it now and it seems to be working great again -- and they specified that if anything else goes wrong I can bring it right back in and warranty should cover most further repair work! They're also upfront and explanatory about what might be wrong with your computer / what their repairs are / how they're fixing your computer which I really appreciated too!

Took my Samsung laptop in here with water damage to the keyboard. The guy took it in the back, came back 2 minutes later and told me it was unfixable and to recycle it. Luckily I held on to it because I’m a pack rat. A year later I got a coupon for a free inspection at another place, who ordered a new part and fixed the problem for 110$. Pretty terrible if had thrown out a 1300$ laptop based on this company’s bad advise. If you’re going to go here and they tell you they can’t do it, it’s because they’re incompetent, not because it can’t be done.

I brought my laptop to the hackery because I had water damaged my laptop. Most reviews left here were raving about the Hackery so i decided to give it a try. Basically what had happened was that they said my laptop was too damaged and could not be fixed. So, they offered to transfer all my data stored on the laptop to my external hard drive for 30 dollars. This was great to hear that at least some of my laptop could be saved. When I went back to pick up my laptop after the transfer was done, they weren't able to find the screws for the backing of my laptop and told me to come back if i really needed them. During this transaction, I asked if my laptop was still worth anything and the clerk had told me that majority of the parts inside were unusable and would offer to take in my laptop in exchange for the file transfer fees ($30). Fine. I said no. A week later, I decided to power up my laptop just curious to see what would happen. The laptop turned on flawlessly and everything is working. In fact, I am typing this review on it at this moment. SO here I was, scrambling for a thousand bucks for a replacement thinking my laptop was garbage based on what the Hackery had quoted me. Later that day I brought my laptop back to the Hackery asking for those screws back so that I could secure the backing on. I was not surprised when the clerk told me that they "couldn't find" 2 of the screws. This is highly unprofessional as I had brought my laptop in with all the screws neatly labeled and attached to the backing. I expect that when returned, fixed or not, that I would receive my laptop back the way it came. Also, upon informing the clerk that it was now working, he says "well I guess you got a free job done". NO. That's not really it, I would've gotten rid of it based on your diagnosis and lost $1000. The same clerk continued to give me poor service by saying "if it works it works" in a who-cares sort of attitude. I am highly dissatisfied with the service at the Hackery because they had misinformed me and misled me into thinking my perfectly functional laptop was worth $30 - basically garbage in comparison to its $1200 worth. Also their lack of organization and professionalism when it came to returning parts of my laptop.

This place is great! I had to repair my computer and I went first to a shop close to my house where they quoted me 500 CAD$ only for the part plus labour. Just in case I went to The Hackery and they managed to get the part (new) for only 160 CAD$ plus a very reasonable 60 CAD$ for labour. These guys are the best! I have had some bad experiences back home in Australia with computer service so I asked around before I took my laptop to be repaired. Jack's and David were very helpful and professional. I discussed my problem and they came up with a great solution. They examined my laptop and discovered that the hard drive was unserviceable so they transferred my data to a used (Dell M2400) that they had in stock. They did this in less than 4 hours and they charged me nothing (ZERO $). The used Dell only cost me $220 & tax. You can not imagine how happy I am! As a international traveler I can not survive with out a laptop. I am so happy with the outcome that I am planning to buy another laptop from them to give to my Canadian mate.

I've been building my own gaming desktops since I was 14 (I'm 19 now). I've always been able to find solutions and fixes online or through my own troubleshooting/testing but I was absolutely stumped with my computer not being able to start for the past week. The staff are friendly, they know what they are talking about, they call you with updates and keep you appraised of changes for the cost of repairs and how long they need to complete the work. I dropped off my machine because I suspected the network card was busted. This was the second computer repair shop I'd tried, with the first saying nothing was wrong. The fine folks at the Hackery identified the problem and a bunch of others and gave me back my machine not only with a repaired network card, but with a ton of other repairs as well. They replaced a cracked LCD screen on my daughter's laptop. London Drugs said it would cost $350 to $400, about the price of a new laptop. The Hackery quoted me about $120, installed. Hard-to-find location since I almost went to the store next to The Hackery. Staffs were okay. They provided free diagnosis for my laptop. It took me quite a while before getting to talk to them to since there was two people already in line. It was my first time there so I hope they could have told me to wait by mentioning what they were doing. They ignored my existence in the store though I walked around and checked things out a lot since I was bored. They only noticed when I came and talked to them about my laptop. I’d say probably because they were busy. Chaotic in-store display. Wires and tools were put in various old and slightly dusty boxes. However, every box was clearly labeled so even if everything was so unorganized, it’d not take long to find stuffs if needed.

2015 did not start out so good and to top it off my computer was telling me hard drive had a problem. Being a Ludite with a brother who could and did look after all problems for the last 25 yrs but he had moved to Regina and I was stuck. Read the reviews and went in on Jan. 6th with a complete list of my current computer from the 4 year old bill of sale and the error codes I was receiving on my computer warning me of impending doom. I spoke to Jax - he spent at least 15 minutes listening to me and responding with a plan on what they would do in 1 day. I could not afford to be without the computer for more than that. Showed up with the computer on Jan 7th, Bob was kind enough to get it out of my car and there was a line up already. On top of the hard drive I wanted more memory, the computer content cloned to save my email from Outlook and I wanted it back the day before I took it in and quite prepared to be unreasonable and having high expectations. My unreasonable expectations were thwarted. They were pleasant, professional, delivered everything they had said they would for a dollar amount that was less than half of what I expected and met the turn around. They did not even begin to charge me for the cloning Needless to say I am now a huge fan of The Hackery. Jax and his team are beyond expectations and they will be getting all future work (I have a store with computers) even if my brother moves back to Vancouver. Thank you The Hackery!

The folks here are as honest as they come and here to help you, not take advantage of your computer woes.. Instead of taking on my repair, they insisted that I contact the manufacturer of my laptop and ask for a free repair because they thought that what they could do for me would not be a permanent solution. While i only got a substantial discount on the repair, I would not have had the knowledge to pursue the matter and escalate my case with HP. I was extremely impressed with how forthright and knowledgeable they were about my particular hinge issue, which is common with HP laptops. Definitely a place you can trust for honesty and fair prices.

I brought my laptop to fix and was charged $60 plus tax at first. I brought back within the 30 days guarantee period as it was broken again. After that they told me it can't be fixed so I went to pick it up. They ended up returned me the initial charge plus buying back the part I purchased to fix the machine. They also gave me advice on where I can buy a laptop. The most honest business I've ever seen. Staff there are extremely friendly and knowledgeable as well. Highly recommended if you need to find a place to fix your computer.

Quick and efficient service (inside 2 hours) for the right price. Doubt the Geek-squad could match what The Hackery has to offer. Their location is easy to access and parking was not a problem. Both drop-off and pick-up (2 hours later) accounted for less than 10 minutes of my time. Will definitely use them again.

Exceptional. My hard drive froze. I contacted a number of computer specialists. I was quoted anywhere from a min of $350.00 to $500.00 minimum to have it repaired. My son recommended the Hackery. Unbelievable. Cost was $30.00 for labour plus $30.00 additional for a portable drive. All my files were transfered and usable. It is nice to deal with a company where they have pride in their service and the quality of work that they offer.

People aren't kidding when they call The Hackery the best computer repair shop around. After spending hundreds of dollars on replacement parts with no luck, I came in with what I thought was a non-functioning custom desktop as a last resort. Everyone was very friendly, and a quick few days later, they let me know that they were able to get the parts working just fine on their test bench. When I came back to pick everything up, they refused to charge me because, in their words, "they didn't fix anything". Talk about stellar service. All of the staff were great to deal with, not to mention that the shop is a treasure trove of vintage hardware that's worth visiting if you're a computer geek. They were right about the computer as well: the computer was just fine, the issue was that my display's manufacturer had issued a bugged over-the-air firmware update that broke all of the input ports on all three of the brand-new, identical displays that I have at home. Yikes -- not my proudest moment. Moral of the story? No matter how experienced you are with computers, there's always a problem you haven't dealt with before. When that happens, The Hackery should be your first stop. They're absolutely worthy of your business.

I had some issues with my laptops hardware which were diagnosed and fixed at this place. You can tell they know what they are doing. It took a bit of time to ship the part from Asia but that's out of their control.

The service was above and beyond, he listened to my concerns, squeezed me in and kept me updated while he was working on my machine. I was really skeptical of bringing my computer anywhere after the experience I had with Vancouver Laptop in the past. I just built myself a brand new PC from parts I bought online and I messed up a bunch of things and I thought I may have fried my motherboard.
